I grew up in a household with two brothers, a daddy, and my grandfather. Too many men, in other words. They diluted M'ma's influence by diverting my attention to things like the danger of answering nature's call in the dead of the night. I've got a hint for those of you raised in a less spit-and-scratch world: check before you sit, because chances are that seat is gonna be up. And they don't even have the grace to be embarrassed about it. According to my sweet baby boy, if you're the minority sex in the household, you oughtta be putting it up for them. Sigh.

Having brothers was a mixed bag. When anybody messed with me they were always quick with an offer to beat them up. That was sorta nice, although I personally believe it had more to do with the fact that guys just like to fight than with any towering concern for my welfare. You might think that's cynical but guess who the target was if no one else was around and they were tired of fighting each other? I must've spent half my childhood locked in the bathroom, screaming, "Dad's gonna get you when he gets home." I know, I know, nobody likes a stoolie. But it was either that or have my block knocked off on a regular basis, and trust me, Daddy was the best deterrent going.

A smart woman probably would've gone away to an all-girl school or moved in with some girlfriends at the first opportunity. Me, I got married to my high school sweetie. And the tradition continues. Our only kid (who hasn't been a kid for quite some time now) is the aforementioned sweet baby boy, and except for an Irish setter we had for eleven years a long time ago, even our pets have all been male. I just try to stay afloat whenever I find myself in the deep end of the testosterone pool, and if you don't think that isn't a trial sometimes, I'm here to tell you- it can be hell.

Then again, it can also be heaven. In fact, it mostly is. But listen, don't tell my guys I 'fessed up to that, okay? Trust me, it's difficult enough already, just trying to stay one step ahead of the game.

Solid ... 2.5*! Yah, I'm afraid this one was no "keeper"; straight to the PBS shelf where I got it from!

This was my first Susan Andersen, and although I did finish it ... it was a chore, not the goal for my romance reading choices (nor the type of book I like to spend a bunch of my time reviewing/berating even).

WHAT WAS WRONG: The hero jumped right out of the box as soon as he was on the scene making ridiculously unfounded accusations to the heroine, whom he'd never laid eyes on before, his sister (whom he hadn't seen in ages), and his sister's new "intended" (whom he'd never even met). He was just plain rude and insulting to everyone around him, with nary a hint of "bad boy charm" to be felt/seen. If he was a boyfriend/friend/acquaintnce in real life ... well, he'd just be a complete embarrassment to anyone he was with! An extremely poor character representation by the author. I found absolutely no reson why the heroine would want to spend 5 minutes in his company, and to her credit in the beginning she didn't.

The heroine was "okay" for the most part, but she made some pretty TSTL choices along the way, and one "stowaway" routine that was just completely assinine! There's more "wrong" with this book, but again, I don't even have the emotional energy about this book to want to bother addressing it.

WHAT WAS RIGHT: Not too much! However, I got the "feeling" that Susan Andersen could write a decent romance based on some character and chemistry details that I saw "sparks" of in this (even though they didn't really come together here), and she also wrote some love scenes that "worked" despite the lack of tension/chemistry building up to them. That shows some promise. Since this is the first book I've read by her, I'm going to assume she has a few "great" ones amongst her backlist. I'll give her another try and chalk this one up to ... I didn't get the good one!

FINAL WORD: I think this book is about as lackluster as ... well ... this review! LOL! :D

I enjoyed this very light fast read. I picked this book up because I was looking for a girlie girl heroine. I got her in spades here. She feisty and fun. She takes out a bad guy with her awesome high heel shoe!

The hero is good eye candy with trust issues. He is growly and a jerk at first. However, Andersen does a good job showing us why Lily falls for him and she makes him grovel later which is always good.

There is a bit of a madcap romance going on as we are on the road racing toward a destination and stumble into an estate with a nefarious plot going on while being trailed by another bad guy.

I have some issues with the some what impotent stereotypical Latino young villain. But overall this is a pleasurable read.

Lily & Zach meeting each other gets off on the wrong foot. He thinks she's out to fleece his rich sister and she thinks he's an ass. An active Marine who's used to giving orders, Zach is at a loss as he discovers more about Lily than what he initially assumed. Lily starts falling for him on a road trip to stop his sister's wedding. Romance, intrigue, and mystery ensue. Solid book with good plot that has characters from the other books in the series that I haven't read yet.

I hated that the Marine referred to himself as a soldier. Shame on you for not knowing Marines are a product of the Marine Corps, Soldiers are a product of the Army, Sailors are a product of the Navy. You cannot mix and match. I am as mad at the editor for not knowing the subject matter and allowing this book to be published with such a grievous mistake. Please support our troops.

Zach and Lily were such similar strong people who were stunned by what they felt for each other and that made them fight so much. These two characters were so much fun and easy to connect with. Their sweet and caring personalities that they tried to hide from the other were so beautifully revealed. they both cared and were so protective of Glynnis (Zach's little sister and Lily's friend), which took them a while to realize they both had the same goal.

I just love a good romance novel that starts off with two people fighting off whatever they are feeling. Lily and Zach had the strongest chemistry and they fought it so much, it didn't help that they both were so stubborn. As much as they fought, everyone else around them noticed just how much chemical reaction they both exude for each other. Zach's friends noticed, the Beaumont family even mistook Lily to be Mrs. Taylor. I mean, even Miguel thought Lily was Zach's woman and planned on kidnapping her as revenge.

The book was fun to read and easy to connect with the characters. It didn't take too long to get to the point which was great. The steamy love scenes between these two were also the best parts for me. Their chemistry felt so real and it was perfectly illustrated. The language use was so easy to read.

The action on the book was also great to read, it wasn't too much, just enough to show us how strong and well trained Zach was and how that did not scare Lily but gave her courage to take risks and eventually help solve the mystery of Glynnis and David's kidnapping. I love how Zach and Lily's arrival to the Beaumont mansion shed light to the people there, gave others a wake up call, gave others a voice and encourage others to live their lives.

In the very end, after battling with their inner selves and what they needed to do for their lives, I really loved that they did not let love stand in the way of what they have always wanted to do but instead they did what they loved and loved each other.

4.5*'s Really cute! I have not read any Susan Andersen in a long time and it's fun to read a contemporary rom com, kind of comforting.

Lily Morrisette is an elite chef who is renting a room from her young friend who she met at yoga class. She is stunned when a big 36 yr old marine Zach, comes home and tries to kick her out. She tells him she has a rental agreement and pays rent to his sister but the big jerk is sure she is some kind of gold digger out to fleece his younger sister Glynnis, who will soon come into her trust fund. Meanwhile, Glynnis has gone off with her boyfriend who she plans to marry but big brother is determined to break up this plan.
The characters are likeable and the relationships well developed. Big bad marine tries to stay away from soft, girly chef. He fails big time LOL. There is a kidnapping or two, lots of laughs and an HEA.

What a fun book and story! Will definitely read more from this author. So why didn’t I give it 5 stars? I could tell you everything about the 2 main characters ad nauseum. I wasn’t halfway through the book before I was sick of descriptions. Too bad the other very delightful characters weren’t as well fleshed out. And I’m no prude nor am I a Marine, but the language was extremely crude in cases where it was not necessary. And one subplot was just plain boring. But all in all, this was a good read.

Hmm... I couldn't get past the image of Lily being Dolly Parton in a chef's cap. Indeed, all of the characters were a bit cartoonish and gormless - particularly the Colombian cuckold. (Was he well-heeled or just brought to heel?) Plenty of humour with Lily being given the best lines but I'm sure that not all of the laughs were intentional. At the end, the two principal characters were definitely madly in lust but I'm not convinced that theirs was a match made in heaven.

The book was promising honestly, I stopped reading once Africa was mentioned. It always makes me cringe when we are called "natives", I don't recall reading book where white people are called "natives", it annoys the hell out of me! 😑😐🤨

Oh and by the way, Africa is a content, try to be specific when referring to our countries 🙄🙄

I liked this book even better than Coop and Ronnie's story. Lily and Zach are both great and I instantly liked them. The story had so much going on, mystery, thriller, comedy, romance. I never lost interest and kept wanting to see what would happen next. I also really enjoyed the little side story, within the main story, of Christopher and Jessica.

March 2024 book hoarder surprise challenge- Luck/Lucky in title.

Zach and Lily have instant sexual chemistry from the beginning which heats up as the story develops.
Because of misunderstandings, they're antagonistic towards each other.
Snappy dialogue.
It was slow moving but the story does develop & become more than just 2 people who are fighting their attraction to each other.

Great story

This is my first post on a book by this author. The storyline and the development of the main characters, Zach and Lily, are complex and kept me reading. I will be wanting to read another Andersen novel.

2.5 stars. This book is pretty dated and Zach is pretty horrible to Lily in the beginning. I feel like I read this book a lot when I was younger but I’m not really sure what the appeal was - it didn’t age well.

Oh, this is a fun book! One of my favorite scenes is when the kidnapper insults our heroine's shoes. Yes, some humor and a great side story. I've read this before and enjoyed the reread.

Just okay. Ok spice, but that was not enough to save the book. No real drama or at least not dramatic enough for me.

I enjoyed this book and would most likely read again hence the 4-star rating. For my taste, a good romance book should have good character chemistry, humor, good conversation, and a plot. Zach and Lily had sizzling chemistry within the first few pages and I was instantly hooked. The plot kept me wanting more and I was happy to discover that it was #2 in a series- giving me an opportunity to keep exploring the world and characters.
