It's well known that if you want to keep your body fit, you must do some regular exercise. But when it comes to our mental health, few of us take the time to maintain and improve it. For some reason, we expect to be in great mental shape without doing any work. And when we realise we're struggling, we look for a quick and easy fix instead of developing the skills that will help us in the future.Enter The Mind Workout - a home exercise programme for improving your mental health and fitness.Developed as a result of Mark Freeman's own recovery from mental illness, The Mind Workout combines mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). It outlines twenty easy-to-follow steps you can take to free yourself from the ways of thinking and behaving that cause mental health challenges in your life - from cutting out the compulsions that cause uncertainty, anxiety and distress to relieving stress and distraction. The Mind Workout is the key to making the switch from a frenetic, anxiety-driven life to one that's based on your core values. It will leave you feeling mentally stronger, fitter and better equipped to navigate the complexities of everyday life.

Mark and I have very similar outlooks on mental health and recovery. Mental fitness is a scale and we're all somewhere on it - we all have brains, after all! Everyone is capable of improving their levels of fitness, just as we can lift weights or improve our cardio fitness. And in fact, mental fitness training is just as necessary - in a society that is so focused on instant gratification, we are less able than ever before to sit with our discomfort, to process our negative emotions and to resist the compulsions that make us miserable. I've learned so much from Mark's work, about my own brain, coping mechanisms and capability for resilience and joy. So I really recommend reading his book too - no matter how you perceive your own mental health. If you've ever wanted to control worrying, find a more positive outlook, give up bad habits, be more mindful, like yourself a little better or just be a little more happy, Mark's twenty easy steps could make a huge difference. Even if you've never tried a self help book before, The Mind Workout is funny, engaging - and it has pictures. What more could you want?
There were some funny approaches in this book that I found original & useful but on the whole this is a slapdash collection of ideas from mindfulness practices and self help exercises padded with rambling analogies, geared specifically toward OCD though this is not stated anywhere.
One of the best self help books I have read. Very effective analogies to help one understand the needless struggles that can be placed upon oneself. A simple yet engaging read.
For those of us who suffer from OCD and anxiety this is an excellent guide to living with and making recovery. It is not a cure as there is no such thing as we know but there is learning to live with and keeping it in check so it doesn't run your life. Each chapter deals with a different aspect with an individually tailored exercise at the end. It's no easy ride he makes you work, it is difficult but thought provoking. The author is someone who knows what he is talking about and shares his own experience as well. I recommend it one of the better ones I've read.
This is such a fantastic book. I feel so blessed I found it and started reading it. The Mind Workout helped me learn about mental health, and it helped me understand myself on a whole new level. I'm someone who's suffered from being anxious for years without really understanding what was going on with me. I wish this book was in my hands way earlier - but maybe now's the perfect time. I recommend this book to everyone with all my heart.
I have learned a lot more than I thought I would. It seems the book was written for me. Good explanation of Compulsions and good practice steps to follow to work with.
Management is about people, and this book is a reminder that to be a good manager, you need to know how to manage people, and by the means of people, it means it should be started from ourselves.
As a manager I might say, just do your best, I will not chasing you all the time, (I trust you), I will help you with every problem you face, and in the end, I am responsible for this (even though you did not want to do the works).
For me it also the same, that as a person, mental health is very important, there is working days and rest days. Workdays and weekends, office hours, and non office hours. The key is regular resting, (taking a break), trying to distract in a positive way.
About the book: The first part (12 chapter) is about how to break, how to kick the brake pedal. Taking a break is not easy, therefore you must understand that this is normal (fear is normal), you must understand that the message is change your action (not your mind, mind is very difficult). I realize that it is very difficult to stop, as it needs 12 chapter itself to tell me to stop.
The second part is about recovery, only 8 chapter, looks easy but difficult to apply. Basically, when you taking a time to stop, you will lose something, (not only feeling but material), the book remind again that why it seems after stop something, you still not happy is because we have a wrong value, its because there are uncertainty (that need to be embrace)
Good book, well this is the second book about acceptance, after Quiet (Susan Cain 2012)
This is a good book, somehow oversimplify but for many occasions it works.
This book presents a stand-out message in a culture trying to understand mental illness and mental health. In fact, we’ve been promoting the same message for years now yet we’re still seeing problems with high suicide rates and increasing mental disorder diagnoses. Maybe the problem with our mental health isn’t about stigma, or chemical imbalances or an unhealthy gut. Maybe the problem is with our choices. Every day we make choices that impact our physical health, and we don’t question why lifting weights and running is difficult for us - we know it’s because we haven’t taken good care of ourselves. Similarly, many of us struggle with the same internal experiences throughout our lives (anxiety, depression, hallucinations, etc.) but we never consider our environment and the choices we’ve made along the way. Just like our physical health, our mental health can be trained, developed and cared for. And you can improve the mental health of your community by the way you care for them - just like yourself. Thank you for writing this book, Mark! I learned a lot.
Actions and following your values > thoughts and compulsions! This book shows how to apply Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to your mental health and life. I give 3.5-4 stars because I think it could be challenging to read this book if you are unfamiliar with ACT, as the author’s analogies can be a bit “out there”. However, I really like the 20 steps approach and the comparison to physical fitness. I have definitely benefitted from Mark Freeman’s work and am grateful. He has experienced and overcome much and that is inspirational. In my opinion, we have to find what works for each of us and that might be one type of therapy or several/many!

If you really want to improve your mental health, this is your work. It has helped me tremendously with complusions, urges and intrusive thoughts, more than any therapy that I have ever done. Well structured book with very helpful insight. There is no place for chemical imbalance in this book, just and active and effective approach to cut out the complusions, acting according your values and getting your like back. Mark Freeman is the best when it comes to OCD full recovery.
An invaluable self help manual to help you enjoy life whilst overcoming mental health problems. I especially like the clear integration of mindfulness and nonjudgmental attention. The incorporation of ERP will be invaluable for an OCD sufferer, and ACT principles are amazing for anyone and everyone!
The best book I have ever read on the topic of recovery and mental health. So practical, accessible and easy-going. Mark breaks down the concepts so that anyone can understand them, and shares some funny and enlightening anecdotes from his personal journey. This book should be a compulsory read in my opinion for anyone with a brain.
Excelente trabajo, siempre recomendado 👌!!
This is the only book you need to read to improve your mental health. Mark Freeman makes you rethink mental health as a whole, and then gives you tons of examples from situations in your daily life (workouts!) that you can work on. An essential for every human being with a brain!
Paja. Pero si le sirve a alguien, genial
