DNF…

Angie was a terrible person. All 3 sisters were annoying. Angie was given orders multiple times and never followed any of them. She endangered herself and the Texians several times and has to be rescued again and again. But, what did she do every time? Yelled that she knew better than everyone else and she should be allowed to do what she thought was best. Mostly the things that got her into trouble over and over again. Olivia wasn’t much better and the youngest one was obnoxious.

And she treated Lorenzo like crap. Why he was so attracted to her, I had no idea. She was rude to him and a danger to herself, to him, and to the Texians. And she kept screaming that she was right.

Eventually, I couldn’t stand any of them anymore and stopped reading.

I enjoyed this historical romance set in a period rarely written about: the 1830s when the Texians fight for Indepence from Mexico. Angelica Torres and her sisters run a small cocina or diner during the day. They also help the Texians fight for freedom. The attraction between two strong stubborn characters, Angie, and the Mexican Army officer Lorenzo Valdez, sizzles.

Angie To The Rescue

Angie's parents died in an "accident" that she suspected was caused by Mexican soldiers. Her grandparents were Mexican supporters but Angie and her two sisters were secretly supporting the Texas liberty fighters. Lorenzo was a Mexican soldier that also supported the Texans. Angie didn't know what to believe about him but had to work with him anyway.

Lots of words

Glad I read the 3rd book first. I would have quit after this one. I almost stopped reading on more than one occasion. It was very repetitive.
Serena’s story was much better. I’ll give book 2 a try, only because it’s a series.

Fighting for you life

This was an amazing historical romance during the Texas vs Mexican war. Many spies and terrible battles. The sisters were selling food and helping the Texans not knowing who to trust. It was a great read.

Although I do love Historical Romance, I’ll admit that I haven’t read many with this particular historical event as a background. The battle for independence is never easy while the losses and victories often go hand in hand. Add to the tensions as Texas fights for the ability to break from Mexico two strangers, apparent enemies find themselves battling not only the historical ramifications all around them, but their personal emotions as well.

Officially Angie and her sisters are feeding the Mexican army from their equivalent of a diner. Unofficially, they are also gathering information to help the armies that will one day free Texas from Mexico. Food and information sent to those soldiers is of vital importance in this fight for freedom. The very last thing Angie needs is attention from a very handsome, persistent Mexican soldier. Sure, Lorenzo saved her from certain harm, but simply being with him will cause far more harm to her heart, if not her true cause. Her mind says she cannot trust him, her heart tells a different story. Yet, what if Lorenzo is not all that he claims? What if he has closely held secrets as well…

Texas Conquest is an intense story full of secrets, twists and turns, backed by historical facts. I was engaged with not only Angie and Lorenzo’s romance but with the history taking place around them. No, this isn’t a history lesson. Yet it’s impossible not to feel the tensions, the building up of events that will eventually give freedom to so many people.

Two people with dangerous secrets must find a way to be together in spite of what appears to be obvious. Texas Conquest will take you right into the memories of history with a couple and a cause well forth fighting for. I completely enjoyed my time in this story and would recommend this story to any Historical Romance reader, especially those that enjoy Western Historical Romance. An intriguing story with a main couple worthy of each other, interesting secondary characters and touches of histery blended in with the romance. It’s a win all around for me.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

this is Angie Torres and Lorenzo Valdez's story.
Supplies had arrived. Anjelica Torres gnawed on her lip as she watched the weary mules trudging up the dusty road, three wagons in tow.
He brought his hand to her face and the clean scent of mesquite surrounded her as his thumb brushed dirt off her cheek. She had no doubt they held precious provisions; blankets, boots—even guns. All things that the army camped across the river desperately needed.
His expression had turned from concern to incredulous. “I just saved your life and you’re not even going to thank me?” He shook his head and his fingers tightened slightly on her waist. “You at least owe me your name.”
I highly recommend reading.
Texas Conquest by Holly Castillo is a wonderful well written 4 star book.

Angie and her sister Olivia are feeding the Texas army in their diner type castino. But what they are really doing is gathering information to give to the soldiers that that are fighting to free Texas from Mexico. The sisters are also trying to supply food to the starving Texan freedom fighters. Lorenzo is a convict soldier. He is also a spy for the Texans. Then Lorenzo’s attention is on Angie and the last thing she wants is attention from a Mexican soldier. Even a handsome and persistence mexican soldier. Even though Lorenzo has saved Angie from being harmed. Angie’s mind tells her she can’t trust Lorenzo but her heart says different. Lorenzo has a past he can’t forget or share. Because of his past Lorenzo feels he can’t trust anyone especially a woman. But somehow Angie and Lorenzo must learn to trust and work together for texas and the chance of freedom.
I enjoyed this book. I loved the twists and turns in this story. I loved how Angie and her sister Olivia did not let the fact they were women prevent them from helping the Texan freedom fighters as much as the could even putting them in dangers way. I felt like I was there with Angie and Olivia which as far as I am concerned is a tribute to the author’s writing. I like the plot of this story a lot. This made chuckle at times. I really enjoyed how Lorenzo and Angie interacted with each other. I liked the characters a lot nd the ins and outs of this historical novel and I recommend.

I really enjoyed this historical novel, set in San Antonio, Texas as the Texians fight the Mexicans for Independence. Angelica Torres and her sisters run a small kitchen by day, by night they do what they can to help the Texians fight for their freedom. When her determination to help brings her into contact with Mexican Army officer Lorenzo Valdez, she knows she should hate him, but can't quite seem to. When she finds they are on the same side and they have to work together, they have to find a way to trust each other despite their secrets and the past Lorenzo can't forget or share.
The Torres sisters are strong characters, determined not to let the fact that they are female stop them from fighting for the future of Texas. Lorenzo is definitely flawed, but also determined to fight and die for the cause. Incidents in his past have convinced him that he can trust no one, especially a female. Determined not to care about Angie, he is fighting a losing battle.
This historical novel covers events I am not as familiar with, and the author successfully kept me interested in the story and how the characters fit into it. This is the first in a series, and I hope the next two will focus on the remaining Torres sisters and how they continue with their fight for an independent Texas.

Holly Castillo’s latest novel “Texas Conquest,” is a beautiful love story set against the backdrop of Texas fight for independence from Mexico. In San Antonio during the fall of 1835, Anjelica and Olivia Torres are doing their best to help their fellow Texans achieve freedom from Mexico by completing dangerous missions. Anjelica is doing her best to figure out a way to get more supplies for the resistance when she makes a bold move and is almost killed. Luckily, Lorenzo Delgado Valdez, a Spanish soldier, was nearby and saved her life and in that instance, their physical reaction was swift and intense that made them both wanting more. Neither star-crossed lover may be what they seem, but in order to see if there is a chance for them, they both must learn to let go of past hurts and work towards finding a way to trust. I was given an advanced copy of this book, and all of the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Texas Conquest is the first book by Holly Castillo for me to read. I must say that this historical romance set Texas Revolution as a backdrop is impressive. She has given the reader strong characters especially the females in a historical period of which I have only the basic knowledge. From the beginning the author had a writing style that made the characters and the time come to life. The struggles, the dangers, the conflict between personal and political, along with the joys of finding love in a difficult times are all in this story. I look forward to more by this author.

A historical romance that takes place in San Antonio Texas. Full of mystery and intrigue that will keep you turning the pages. Loved Angie and her sister, both strong headed women who are supplying food to the Texians. Lorenzo is a convict soldier. When Angie and Lorenzo meet, there is no denying the chemistry between them. Loved the banter between the two, had me laughing out loud.

Looking forward to the next book in the series. I am not a big historical reader but I did enjoy the story.

Texas Conquest is Holly Castillo's first novel and while it is a good story, her inexperience does show. She has yet to master the art of showing what a character is feeling through use of the five senses. For me this made it difficult to bond with the characters. Added to that was her tendency to jump points of view within a scene, which was distracting. Despite these flaws, I was interested in her depiction of the battle for Texas at the Alamo, a part of history I am only vaguely aware of. I liked reading the story from a civilian point of view. Overall this was a pretty decent read.

This was a really good book to read ! I was so involved with the characters that at times I was so afraid for them and the situations that they dealt with. The story line is just wonderful and moves at a great pace. Holly hit a home run with this one!
