I bring early Christianity to life by writing fiction based on fact for people who enjoy Biblical history. I asked... What was it like for those first 'Followers of the Way? My discoveries led to the award winning Apostle John series. Two Readers' Favorite Finalist Awards and one IAN Award.
"Researching life in the 1st Century AD is a combination of mystery tour and treasure hunt," she says.
I'm torn between giving this book 4 stars or 5 stars. It's likely that the final published book will merit 5 stars, but I read an advance reading copy that still needed final editing. On one hand, it's not fair to penalize the book for things that will be corrected, but on the other hand, I won't know if they've been corrected unless I wait to read the final version.
Updated 12/17/16: I have read the published version and still found enough errors to leave the rating at 5 stars.
This is the most action-packed book in the series, and I believe it's the book in which the Apostle John has the smallest role. A lot of the events revolve around his expected arrest and the restrictions the whole family endures, but he's not actually on the scene for much of the book. I missed him and hope we see more of him in the future.
There is tragedy in this book--the murder of a dear member of the The Way a couple of days before her wedding. But there's also great joy--the marriage of Benjamin and Rachel. The ending left me wanting more.
I appreciate the research the author had to do to give so many details about life in John's time. I love reading about how the early church worshipped and loved each other, as well as how they endured persecution. We take our freedoms so for granted that it's important to realize what others suffered to keep the flame of the faith alive.
