I’m currently obsessed with this series, so I decided I must read the books based on it. While the first book pretty much retells the first, I believe, two episodes, this second book has more to offer and adds details; things that aren’t included in the show. I did like that I got to read new things and not something I’d already seen in the show, but, alas, I’m still a little disappointed: because of the huge gap between book one and book two, this book series cannot be a stand-alone work (and I really wanted it to be). You won’t know what’s going on without having already seen the show, so it makes it impossible to give/read it to a child (or heck, even an adult) and let them enjoy it. Nevertheless, I’ll still give it four stars because as I said, this is my current hyperfixation and I might be a little bit biased because of this.
On one hand, it captures the voice of the cast and characters perfectly. On the other, it's sort of a behind-the-scenes that answers questions between Jim entering the Darklands and eventually finding the Changeling nursery, questions that most people aren't even asking (where the Glamour mask came from, where Jim found chalk to write his drawings and maps with). Dark, fun, entertaining, but ultimately doesn't contribute much. It's a lot less insightful than the first book, too.
