Rate this book
Kirby is no ordinary French Bulldog—he is twenty-two pounds of fur-covered ruthless ambition. Freakishly intelligent and determined, he has one rule the world.

When Kirby, a French Bulldog with a serious Napoleon Complex, moves to a new home in the quaint New England town of Strasburg, Massachusetts, and stumbles upon a forgotten secret laboratory, he realizes that his dreams of Planetary Conquest are finally within paw's reach. But, suddenly, Kirby realizes he isn’t alone. Seemingly out of nowhere, a strange group of people appear, exhibiting what Kirby can only describe as superpowers! Kirby must rise up against all who stand in his way to emerge victorious in this ultimate quest for world domination.

The Atomic Frenchie is the first book in a series following the adventures of Kirby, professional supervillain and future ruler of Earth, as he schemes and battles his way past evil library robots, supernatural cat ladies, superpowered mail men, and more bizarre characters to achieve his sinister dreams of ruling the world.

As a Frenchie owner myself, I could not resist when I saw this title. The book is extremely funny and the cartoonish illustrations are amazing - especially the bulldog’s expressions and his compact, muscular body.

A bit of a disappointment for me were the pages of text - I know it’s only personal taste, I just can’t follow very well books that keep switching from illustrated pages to text pages. It requires two very different mindsets (for me, that is!) and I can’t read the two styles like the same story.

I found the concept of the book itself very, very funny and it’s probably the strongest feature of this book.

Only someone who lives with a Frenchie could have written this, because French bulldogs DO think they rule the world, they DO suffer from massive ego-mania and yes they are sweet but they also ARE prone to ridiculous fits of rage if someone pisses them off.

Remember Pinky and the Brain? Imagine Brain as a French bulldog. And Pinky as a turtle. Only add a ghost mastermind with a laboratory full of amazing gizmos. Intrigued? Find a copy. I initially thought this was a graphic novel but it actually is mostly text with comic panels interspersed along the way. Very clever and funny. I especially enjoyed the justice delivered to the evil neighbor boy (and his dog!) who sought to make Frenchie's life miserable.

I would have preferred that this were ALL comic, instead of mixed with prose, but it was fun! It was a total kids book, and I felt a little weird reading it on the train (a grown man reading a kids book in public?), but I picked it up because it had a frenchie in it, and I'll be danged if I didn't have a great time reading of Kirby and OB's adventures. So much fun.

So one day Kirby and his best turtle friend, OB, learn they are being moved to the suburbs by their family or as Kirby sees them, their servants. Although initially unsure of the move, things start to look up when Kirby finds a secret underground laboratory beneath the garage, One night he is visited by a spectral scientist who used to reside in the home and together, they all explore the lab and let's just say an experiment is done on Kirby which should really scare the world in general. Now Kirby is dead set on achieving complete world domination.

To say I loved this book is an understatement. It's done in combination novel/graphic novel style and I found it super easy to get lost not only in the artwork but also in the story. I loved Kirby but have to admit, he is also a tad scary. Let's just say there is no room for obnoxious kid neighbors in Kirby's universe. The authors also manage to introduce some characters toward the end of the book which I am sure will play important roles in future installments.

Never have a seen such a small pup with such a huge ego. Yet he does have some endearing qualities. Wait, who am I kidding, he so full of himself yet you can't help but love him. In fact, he's the perfect antihero. If you love dogs, run, don't walk, to your nearest retailer and grab a copy of this book. It's beautifully done and will be a wonderful addition to my shelves. I just can't wait to see what Kirby is up to next!

I love the illustrations! They convey such pure emotion and hate from such a tiny compact evil dog.... This is a great way to step young readers from graphic novels into chapter books with hilarious characters and a funny absurd plot. Plenty of humor is included for the parents as well.

This book is pure genius! It has everything; killer trash cans, robots, talking turtles, ghosts, women in bathtubs, and a brilliant bulldog named Kirby! A thrill ride from beginning to end. The illustrations are great and help to include something special within the pages. If you are looking for a book with some crazy characters and a hell of a lot of fun, read this book!

Atomic Frenchie is an action-packed story. Although the main character is normally grumpy, the way he was grumpy is kinda amusing. This kid shot a water gun at him and he had no reaction - that's funny.
The setting is a suburban house (mostly).
I recommend this book to a wide audience.
