Gray Widow's Web

Rate this book
JANEY SINCLAIR never knew how or why she gained her ability to teleport. She never wanted it, and for years tried her best to ignore it. But when horrible violence shattered her world, she vowed to use her mysterious talent to protect the citizens of Atlanta, in an effort to prevent anyone else from suffering the kind of agony she had. Wearing a suit of stolen military body armor, Janey became known to the public as the GRAY WIDOW.

But now the extraterrestrial source of her “Augmentation” is about to reveal itself, in a revelation that will profoundly impact Janey’s life and the lives of those closest to her—

TIM KAPOOR, who barely survived the assault of twisted, bloodthirsty shapeshifter Simon Grove and still struggles to pull himself together, both physically and mentally.

NATHAN PITTMAN, the teenager who got shot trying to imitate Janey’s vigilante tactics, and has since become obsessed with the Gray Widow.

SHA’DAE WILKERSON, Janey’s neighbor and newfound best friend, whose instant chemistry with Janey may have roots that neither of them fully understand.

And Janey’s going to need all the help she can get, because one of the other Augments has her sights set on the Gray Widow. The terrifying abomination known as APHRODITE LUPO is more powerful and lethal than anyone or anything Janey has ever faced. And Aphrodite is determined to recruit Janey to her twisted cause…or take her off the field for good.

Unrelenting ghosts of the past clash with the vicious threats of the future. Janey’s destiny bursts from the shadows into the light in GRAY WIDOW’S WEB, leaving the course of humanity itself forever changed.

Dan Jolley knows how to move a story forward. There's no fluff here: everything has a purpose and the only pauses in action happen to explain some part of the story. The feeling I had about the first story felt very small-scale while this one began to ramp up a bit. The stakes are higher but that also exposes some difficulty in requiring the reader to suspend disbelief to a higher degree. I think Jolley generally succeeded at this. I thought some of he character progression lacked a bit ( certain characters advanced rather quickly while it took the Gray Widow years to function at that level) but it's a minor complaint. Looking forward to the conclusion to the series, especially since this one went in directions I was not anticipating.

4++ stars. As good as the first book - which I rated 5 stars - but a lot more complicated. And scary. Seriously kids, this is a horror story wrapped up in capes and tights (not literally but still). I can't remember having such immediate nightmares after a book like I did with this one... and they were VIVID!

This is going to sound weird and yes I mean it as a compliment but: I think I'm going to enjoy this book a lot more the next time I read it. Again, there is a lot going on in here, from inner and extremely personal discoveries to the villainous nature of, um, new villains to even the origins of our band of augments. There's a conflict in all that simply because the action - which is flat out effing awesome - makes you read faster but there's so much to absorb that you NEED to slow down. Like I said, when I read this again - and I will, which is like the ultimate compliment from me - I think a lot more will make sense. But for now: brain hurt, need sleepy sleep.

All kidding aside, Jolley's writing remains more than impressive. His masterful mixing of different perspectives and the inclusion of a wide cast of characters is truly wonderful to behold (I've caught myself several times ru{e}ing that he doesn't have more 'adult' books in his prose portfolio). And the fact that we move out and about in this tale makes it all the better (try that Nightcrawler!). Now, there's some bits that I remain skeptical about - namely, we're getting a bit gushy (lovey-dovey?) in some parts and that whole 'oh please don't ruin the series in book 3 like Sanderson did with the final installment of his 'Steelheart' books (no spoilers unless you've read that)' - but the proof will be revealed once I start reading the conclusion later today!

Really terrific stuff! You need to read this series and leave reviews because this is good shinola!

Second in this superhero prose series following the Gray Widow (a teleporter). As with many stories, the superhero prose isn't ONLY a superhero genre - there are some (very light) romantic elements and a lot of horror story elements. The villains are more monsters than monologue-spewing superpowered beings out to take over the world for its own good - they are grotesques in the traditional meaning - shapeshifters and creatures stuck half-way between. The villains are in pain and want to share the bounty of their horrible existence. It's up to Gray Widow and her friends to stop them.

The big question is since the villains and the heroes get their powers from the same source ... how long until one becomes indistinguishable from the other?

A great book for superhero fans, horror fans, and monster-hunter urban fantasy fans.

Oh my goodness, the ending! So much!

I loved book one. Janey Sinclair is an amazingly sympathetic, three-dimensional hero. In book two, the stakes rise dramatically. Janey isn’t fighting alone now, which is good, because as scary as the antagonist was in book one, the big bad in book two is absolutely terrifying. Gray Widow’s Web flies like the wind and is packed with visceral, thrilling action and all kinds of surprises. But none of that would matter if you didn’t care about the characters. And you do. Because they feel absolutely authentic. If you’re looking for relaxing, low-key reading, this isn’t it. This is roller coast ride; high in the air, off the tracks, and plunging towards oblivion.

You always worry about the second book in a series not being as good as the first or living up to the first one. This books not only live up to it but I think it is better than the first, it has a maturity that the other didn't have and that Janey has grown as a superhero. Overall I really enjoyed reading this and hope for more from Janey and the Gray Widow.

A Great Read!!!

I read and enjoyed free first book in the Gray Widow trilogy and was hoping that the second installment should be as good. But it was even better than the first book! I can't suit to read the next installment.

The second in a trilogy about a female 'augmented' protagonist. The series doesn't hold back on the violence or sci-fi plot twists. Really enjoyable and can't wait to see how Jolley caps it off in the third book.

The stakes got raised

This is a worthy successor for sure! The action, the pacing, and character development far surpassed the first installment in a multitude of ways.
