Photographs and text tell the Monkees story as each of the band members recalls the formation of the group, their two-year television show, and their subsequent reunions and individual careers
The story of the Monkees is a fascinating glimpse into the nature of celebrity and the toll it exacts. Through this book you hear the voices of the Monkees when they did not have to 'be' the 'Monkees' - voices that were drowned out by the screams of adulation that followed them for several years wherever they went. In the voices you will find a group of 4 young men who had a love/hate relationship with each other and the individual price they had to pay for fame. The comments on Jimi Hendrix (he briefly opened for them) are haunting - in the end do you follow your fame or your talent?
This book is different than any I have ever read. I loved the Monkees when I was a kid, so I was very excited to see this book available. It is an assortment of biographies and autobiographies about the Monkees. The were wonderful photos in the book as well, and some even in color. First the introduction introduced them...they had a Hollywood call for actors. That's what they were looking for. It didn't matter if they could play music or not...but could the act (spontaneously)? They didn't care if they could play music. Mike Nesmit could play the guitar, and Peter could play the piano and banjo...very well. But the producers didn't; want them singing....and the Monkees wanted to sing their own music! The whole book is made-up of photos and comments about was going on wherever they were in the world...Britain, Japan, Australia and others. If you were a fan of the Monkees, you will enjoy this book.
