AutoCAD Map 3D 2011: Using Contours from GIS Sources

Rate this book
“AutoCAD Map 3D 2011: Using Contours from GIS Sources” is one complete topic from our popular book of AutoCAD Map tutorials, “Digging Into AutoCAD Map 3D 2011 – Level 1 Training” in the Kindle format. We have separated the book into sections, taking an “a la carte” approach, allowing you to select just the topics you are interested in or need at the time.

Most GIS software stores the elevation data for objects as attribute data, rather than a property of the objects’ geometry. This means that when 3D objects like contours are imported, their elevation will not automatically become the Z value of the object.

In this Kindle book, you will import contours from an ESRI Shapefile. The contours will be created in AutoCAD as 2D polylines, with an elevation (or Z value) of zero. You will next learn how to convert the attribute information to Object Data during the import process, and then use a query to move each of the contours to its proper elevation, in one quick step. These true 3D contours can then be used to build surfaces in Civil 3D or Land Desktop.

Basic AutoCAD knowledge and an understanding of the fundamentals of Object Data and External Database Links, as well as Queries are all required for the tutorials in this Kindle book. To learn more about Object Data and External Database Links see these other Kindle books in this “AutoCAD Map 3D 2011: Object Data and External Data”, and “AutoCAD Map 3D 2011: Queries”.
