What if a mysterious accident left Elizabeth Bennet unable to recall her identity or past, leaving her at the mercy of Mr. Darcy? The Darcys’ Annual Summer Celebration draws dozens of members of the ton from every corner of England. Amidst the preparations, Darcy discovers Elizabeth washed ashore with no recollection of who she is or how she got there. Despite her wishes, Elizabeth must remain at Pemberley as she recovers and move amongst the throng of high society gentlemen and ladies under the watchful eye of her host. Dive into this romantic tale and immerse yourself in this re-imagined world of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.
This is a book that will teach me to read the sample chapter and not rely upon the author's description. This isn't so much an amnesia tale, although amnesia will play a part, as much as it is a P&P /Fairy Tale mash up. Now I am not inclined to read P&P fairy tale mash ups.
The story is set at Pemberley by the sea where Mr. Darcy Sr. thinks his 10 year old daughter Georgiana can be hostess to a large party. During the fireworks Darcy meets a young lady watching the display from the rocks. She disappears... 5 year later a young lady washes up on the beach and Darcy rescues her and gives her CPR. [Note I could call this for anachronism but since this is a fantasy maybe CPR was discovered in the 18th century and everybody knows it.] He brings her to Pemberley and since she has amnesia he lets Georgiana name her, Isla. She recovers just in time for the annual Pemberley house party Thus bringing the Bingleys, Col. Fitzwilliam, Wickham and other nefarious people to her life. Wickham is a baddie. Caroline is a shrew and Darcy's ex fiance is hoping for a second chance.
Of course Darcy is falling in love with Isla and teaches her to dance. And other stuff happens are we are set up for a sequel.
P&P/Little Mermaid mashup. It was very confusing, a lot of the mermaid stuff was intimated rather than made clear. I couldn't find much redeeming about Darcy. Elizabeth had amnesia but wasn't concerned about it at all! Upon meeting Wickham, she's immediately drawn to him (I can never give too much credit to a book that makes Elizabeth that stupid!). Top that off with wondering if English was a second language for the author. LOTS of incorrect wording/spelling that really got on my nerves (rouse-ruse, borage-barrage, affect-effect, bares-bears, dependence-independence, widower-widow, complimented-complemented, to name a few that stood out to me.)
A sad case of the author either losing the finale muse or another rush to publish. This thoughtful story ends so abruptly it would be considered incomplete in the world of fanfiction. At least there she would have the opportunity to complete the story properly. It's a shame some authors have little consideration for the investment of their readers.
Pleasant, but much more Little Mermaid than Pride and Prejudice except for character names. Pemberley is located by the seashore. When Elizabeth gets transformed from having fins to having legs, she also gets amnesia and doesn't know who she is or where she came from. Darcy is suspicious that she was somehow planted there (and, to some degree, he's right). So he's aloof and stand-offish, even though he's attracted to her. There's also a brief Wickham-and-Georgiana storyline. Most of the rest is more or less Hans Christian Anderson, but with a HEA.
Hard to believe Ilsa (as Elizabeth is called when she doesn't know her own name) can be so charming and witty at a house party full of Regency elite. What does she find to talk about with them? How does she NOT make it obvious that she's from a completely different world?
Not much romance. Darcy goes from avoiding her to being in love with her without much in between.
I really loved this story and the possibilities it presented. It was innovative, charming, intriguing. It was all of those things and more. Then after you are completely hooked, invested in the storyline and the characters. Just when they decide to marry, and Lizzie's history and origins are revealed.....it ends. Ugh, so disappointed. It would have bee. A 4 star novel at the very least.
Reading this book felt like reading a picture book. Far too much like a certain mermaid tale that Walt something-or-other made famous. I might have liked it if I were 8 years old. The concept was simply too cute.
It ended a little abruptly for my taste, but it was so close to wonderful perfection I can't bring myself to take a star for it. Really the description tells you all you need to know. I won't ruin anything else for the world.
