I am not a runner. Being bed bound I'm about as far away from being a runner as it's possible to be while still having legs. Due to this, I'm unable to say how successful the training scheme in this book would be. I read this book because it was free (when I got it), short, and my husband is a runner (a pretty fast one at that).
I really liked the sense of humour in this book. I was sharing so many passages with my husband I ended up telling him to read it himself. Though a lot of the reasoning is scientifically inaccurate, it is very funny. I liked the fact the author acknowledged that not everyone could run a 5k in under 20 minutes (for example, me), though how accurate it is that most people could if they trained for it I'm unsure.
Looking at the training plan it seems less extreme than my husband's, which is probably a good thing as he's considered a bit bonkers even by his running friends. If you've got the time and dedication to stick to it, you'll probably improve. I feel the book is a good length - short enough to be read in one sitting by most people, and easy to refer back to is needed.
The only reason I took away a star is due to the unnecessary fat shaming. If it weren't for that it would have been excellent.
As a long term runner I was looking for a book I could recommend to my less for friends. This book is perfect. It sets out a realistic regime to improve whilst the humour is firmly aimed at my less clever peers. I would thoroughly recommend this book to all those who aspire to improve their running and want a bit of a laugh.
