I finished Lucan today, and I'm still trying to process that this is mda's first book! Lucan is well-written, fast-paced, and enjoyable. I'm a sucker for paranormal YA stories, and this book does not disappoint.
The story centers around Tamzin Walker who, on her nineteenth birthday, wakes up feeling weird. Quickly following this strange feeling is the realization that she's not entirely human. The story follows her journey as she becomes Lucan, adapts to her new abilities, and discovers what her new life will be like--both the good and bad.
I think what I loved most about the story was how mda didn't shy away from writing strong female characters. It was enjoyable reading about Tam's journey, and the hint of romance was wonderful as well. She also did a really nice job describing the Lucan world without being confusing. I really don't want to spoil the story, so please go buy this if you haven't already. You won't regret it!
Lucan was my introduction into the wonderful world of YA Urban Fantasy. As I've mentioned before, for most of my life, I've been big on Contemporary YA, and I've never had much of an interest in fantasy. However, since reading amazing books like Rainbow Rowell's Carry On and Candace Robinson's Quinsey Wolfe, I've been much more open to fantasy as a genre, and I'm starting to really love it--and Lucan is no exception!
I tried to read this book. I really did. But I really didn’t like the main character. She was spoiled and completely selfish. She thought of no one but herself and her own self gratification. Everything was about her. She treated her parents like crap. She treated her boyfriend like crap. She treated everyone like crap. Yet she turns out to be the hero. I could not finish I dislike it so much.
A recommendation from a friend who is the sister of the author. I have to admit that the title nearly put me off. However it was a really good read! It romped along with tension and action galore. Definitely want to read the second one now.
Lucans are a bit like vampires I guess - super strength, telepathy, fast healing and anti aging. Tamzin becomes a Lucan and has to navigate a new way of life, without telling anyone about her new powers. A fast paced, action filled read. A bit gory so for the older YA reader.
