Mike Antonio has always been a fighter-a tough guy from the streets of Boston whose rough exterior hides a tender heart and a desire for love. He didn't expect a glance from one man to change his entire life. Cory Chow is the world's top underground fight club star and a sex slave to his owner. Cory hates his life and one sympathetic glance from the brawny stranger on the sidelines makes Cory realize what he's missing. Cory will do whatever it takes to escape his owner and find the love he craves. But the owner of a million-dollar baby isn't going to let go of his slave so easily and both Cory and Mike will face the fight of their lives.
Sedonia Guillone wanted to be an author since the age of six when she first volunteered in the school library and the librarian had to put a limit on how many times she checked out her favorite books. Then at sixteen, a short story she wrote won honorable mention in a contest by the League of American Pen Women and there was no stopping her. Since then, her first M/M mystery/suspense, His Beautiful Samurai, was nominated for a Gaylactic Spectrum Award and has been required reading in a college gay and lesbian literature course. Her M/M romance, Men of Tokyo: Sudden Bliss won a Rainbow Awards honorable mention in the Conteporary category and her historical romance, Lady of Two Lairds was a finalist for The Romance Studio's Cupid and Psyche Awards and A Passionate Plume Ink Chapter of Romance Writers of America. When she's not writing, she's baking something, talking baby talk to her two cats, Iroh and Zuko and hiking in the woods of Maine with her partner.
This book reminded me of the movie Unleashed which stars Jet Li and Morgan Freeman. There were many simularities between Cory and Jet's character in the movie. When I read the book I even envisioned Cory looking like a younger Jet, so that was an added bonus for me.
When Michael Antonio was younger, he fought in the underground fight clubs and was quite successful at it. Now he owns his own gym, and has been glad to have gotten away from that violent, often deadly occupation. When his shady friend asks for a favor to help him be a bouncer at one of these fights, he reluctantly does so.
Despite Michael's size and prize fighting reputation, he has a very soft heart. He has worked hard to get his business off the ground to be a success, and he is a very fair and loyal man.
When Michael sees "The Chow" for the first time he is shocked. Not only is The Chow the most beautiful man he has laid eyes on, but the sadness and lost look in his eyes pulls on Michael's heartstrings. When Michael notices that Chow has a collar around his neck and is being led by a chain like a dog, he is appalled. As Michael and Chow notice one another for the first time, Michael feels a connection with him he has never felt before. After he watches Chow easily win his match, he watches Chow get leashed by his collar again, and led off like some animal.
Try as he might, Michael cannot get Chow off of his mind. In his heart he knows he must see him again, so he volunteers to work the next fight. When he runs into Chow again, he is once again being led around by his "master" and is unable to make any decisions for himself. There is something in Chow's eyes that make Michael realize that he has a death wish, and has given up hope. Michael becomes afraid that Chow will throw his next fight and force his own death.
During the fight, Michael causes all hell to break loose. During the confusion and fighting, he grabs Chow and makes a run for it. He takes him to his loft above his gym and starts healing Chow of past abuses and shows him how compassion, friendship and love is.
Cory Chow has been a fighter and a sex slave practically all of his life. Despite his past, Cory is a very sweet soul and has an innocence that is truly endearing to others. His ability to give into Michael and learn to trust and love was very touching at times. Because of his neglect and abuse he is often confused by Michael's love and affection, but because of his sweetness he willingly gives his heart and soul to Michael without hesitation.
But, Corey's master is looking for his slave and Michael knows he must do what he can to keep Corey safe and in his life forever.
I loved the characters in this book. Both Michael and Corey were not only interesting, their lovestory was not only sweet but a beautiful thing to watch develop.
I'm so unclear on how to begin to rate this one. On one hand I really enjoyed certain parts and on the other...my eyes were on a constant upward rolls.
A story about an abused slave/cage fighter (Cory Chow) and his ex-cage fighter lover (Michael)? Sounds awesome to me. Sign me up!
Let's get the parts that niggled me first! The weird cockney dialect the author chose to use for all of the Brits in the story? "'Ello, Guv'nor" or "Better than bangers and mash, I say".
Err...no. Stop. The off putting affectations when Chow and Benson spoke...when supposedly Chow had learned from the upper crust of Britian and his dialect matched Benson's. So why was he speaking with weird cockney too? It might be my issue but I found it annoying every time Chow compared his instalove for Mike as better than "bangers and mash".
And was Cory supposed to be simple minded? It never really came across as so just brain washed but in the beginning he's introduced as having to remind himself what his name and birthday was so he wouldn't forget.
Then the instalove between Michael and Cory...it was much too soon.
But I believe they will have a HEA. And did I mention the plentiful sex scenes were hot?
Plus the sex slave bit? Hotness.
So there's a bad guy(Benson) he's not a good as bangers and mash. LOL He's Cory's "master" and his ending was not as satisfying as I wanted it to be. The resolution to getting rid of him seemed rushed.
So what should I weigh more the bad cockney or hot sex?
Hmmm...the sex wins over slightly. TWO & A HALF STARS
I loved Corey! The abuse he suffered most of his life was awful, but he still had the sweetest almost childlike soul. I was so glad he found happiness with Michael. I thought they were well matched, and perfect for one another. This was a great book!
WoW! For such a short story it had a lot of punch to it! I loved Corey. He was so sweet underneath the tough exterior that was forced on him. He and Mike were made for one another. I wish she would write more on these two! They were characters that had a love I won't forget anytime soon.
Short story that packed a punch! ( pun intended) Cory's life has to be one of the saddest, yet one look from Mike and they are both changed. I liked this sweet tale, but wished for just a bit more story at the end, i wanted to see how their lives continued.
Cory was a one million dollar baby hold in captivity by the same man who possesed his father and, after his father's dead, has killed his mother. Cory is like a slave, if he wants to eat he has to fight, fuck or suck. But he feels no rage for his master, he wants only love, a warm embrace, even if from the very man who holds in leashed.
But one night he meets the eyes of Michael, a former fighter, now retired. Michael is tall and muscular but he has a gentle smile. And in his eyes he reads the same things he used to read in his mother eyes: love. And so he knows he can no more live like this and he has only a way to be free: die.
Michael fall in love at first sight with Cory. He doesn't know why, but when he sees this guy he only wants to protect him, to care for him, to love him. No other matter, not his life or his work. Cory is an innocent soul. He only knows how to give, not to receive: he doesn't know he could receive something, he thinks he not deserve to receive nothing. And instead Michael gives to him all and asks nothing for that.
This is not a long romance, but in few pages Sedonia Guillone has written a tender story, with two hearthbreaking characters. I don't know who I prefer: Cory, who can love also his tormentor, or Michael, who fall in love at first sight like a teenager.
I don't know, there is something from this book that makes me feel disconnected to the story. It feels like nothing special. It might be my own problem *shrugs*
This was a good story, well written, and with sexy characters. The only reason I took 2 stars off is because--well--it's a ripoff of the movie, Unleashed. Maybe rip-off is too strong of a word. It's a straight up fanfic.
I love fanfiction. I read it often, but when I'm spending money on a novella, I expect an original story with original characters. This wasn't a 'oh, it's a little like the movie' or 'it has similar themes'. This was THE movie with THE same characters (down to the accents of the bad guys), only with a m/m spin. And no Morgan Freeman. Pity.
Normally I would have knocked it down to 1 star, but even for a fanfic the story was damn good. I think anyone who hasn't seen the movie Unleashed would be happy with their purchase.
I may check out other books by the same author, but I'll be sure to read the summaries carefully first so I don't spend my hard earned pennies on more fanfic.
This is one of those stories that really should have been much longer. I wanted to know more about Michael and Cory and just felt kind of "okay, is that it?" Still, if you're looking for something short, sexy and full of hot asian male goodness (it's about time they get recognition for their strength and their sexiness), then this will work.
I really enjoyed the story. I like Cary a lot-he is so adorable and Mike is also sweet. But the most I liked the way Cary first used the word 'Sweethearts' so cute. =)
