He will find a way to ensure humanity has a chance, he will find his family and bring them to safety and he will make those responsible pay. Lacy, in the meantime is still in the building trying desperately to find a way out to get to her son Jessie whose last message stated he was in the school basement and safe. With fellow co workers they devise a way to get out. Spending a week trapped has given them some prespective about the state of the world. There will be no one coming to help and they have all realized it. Lacy will not give up, she is determined to get out and find her son, knowing that if she can make it home he will be there. They have eliminatted all the infected putting down the occasional stragglers, they become bolder, wanting to do more, venture further. They are teenagers with no adults around and in a world that no longer places boundries on them. They seek new excitment, new adventure. Feeling invincible and confident they can handle anything that comes their way, they plan a trip to the nearest mall...didn't they see that show on tv, how easy it was to take out the few that roamed inside. And there was also the lure of so many new things that is theirs for the taking. Who will stop them? In the following days after he convinces Gunny to take the leadership of this Brave New World, Gen Carson has learned disturbing news about the orgins of the virus but is not willing to share it with Gunny and his group just yet. They have cleaned up their own location and are no longer in danger of starving. He has plans in mind that must be seen through to its conclusion and if they are to survive, Gunny and his group must continue to grow and rally all those who hear his message. As for those that created the virus then celebrated their victory... they are learning it has come with a very high price, one they may not survive and some are not willing to pay. Very well written, pulling the reader along for a wild ride that will make it difficut to stop reading. The next installment can not come fast enough.
I did not think this book would be even better than book 1 in the series but is just as good if not better.
The survivors are now getting used to fighting zombies (and may I say these zombies are not your average shambling slow walking zombies, they are FAST and able to leap 10' or more!). The zombies are still very plentiful but our heroes are learning more about them every day.
The government who unleashed this plague on the world were fiendishly clever (and it isn't hard to figure out who they are). When you add in the fact that someone in the U.S. government gave them the potion/solution to unleash zombies on the world it makes you want to keep reading. Once the new enemy/villain is introduced your attention focuses on him and his group of followers and you really want them to get what they deserve. Unfortunately, they don't IN THIS BOOK of the series. :)
The camaraderie between Gunny and his band of road warriors and former military personnel becomes even closer and makes for a great read. I really like the fact that they had individuals who could "soup up" (as my older brother used to say) vehicles so that they can literally run over zombies in multitudes. But no matter how much or how many they run over, there's always more to take their place.
If there was one thing that I didn't like about this book it's that Gunny and Jessie have their stories told in detail but Lacey gets left out. After such a wonderful beginning in the first book and the potential for a female to come into her own the fact that she and her survival trials are largely ignored sort of bothers me. (However, since the book is written by a male, I'll cut him some slack because there is no way a man would understand how to write a woman to be a heroine in her own right. :) ) This is the only fault I have with this book (and unfortunately I'm not expecting Lacey to feature much in the heroics department in the rest of the series. :( )
Again this book is so full of details, plots, and subplots that one review can't do it justice. So all I can say is buy this series, you won't be disappointed.
~~~This review copy/pasted from my Audible.com review~~~~~~~~~ "2nd Zombie Road adventure even better than the 1st" What did you love best about Zombie Road II? I love the cast of characters, I like all the main hero's in this story, from Gunny, Griz, Cobb, Stabby and Scratch. The grim/gore of Zombie killing mixed with little jewels of humor. I like the fact that most of these guys are gun toting veteran's with strong old fashioned values and deadly fighting skills. They make awesome heroes in this Zombie Apocalypse world. This is definitely a right leaning work of fiction, but that just makes it more appealing in my opinion. There is a good vs evil tale being told on several levels. I missed very much that there was NO mention of Jesse's fate after leaving him in a cliffhanger of a situation. And no mention of Lacey in the second half of the book either. Mr Simpson please write faster.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Zombie Road II? Griz and Scratch. It was sweet and scary. And even the ultimate fate of that situation was left somewhat up in the air. This book left a lot of plot threads dangling.
Which character – as performed by Eric A. Shelman – was your favorite? I love Griz, and Stabby. They both add clever slices of humor here and there, even in action packed fighting scenes. And I think Gunny is a very interesting MC.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? No. No, I don't think there were any moments that I cried or laughed out loud or any extreme reactions, but I did have moments of concerns for characters fates, and I definitely was smiling at certain parts.
Any additional comments? This is a great series that I hope the author continues for a least a couple of more books, This series if fast becoming one of my Zombie fav's. And Eric Shelman is a terrific narrator.
What a follow up to Simpson's debut novel. The Three Flags crew consisting of truckers, vets and other survivors are heading across country to Lakota, Oklahoma on the advice of General Carson. Cheyenne Mountain still has military command and have been using satellites to share info but the General has not told them everything. A schemer has declared herself President and is holed up in a bunker with her cabinet of flunkies and others that are being kept in the dark about what is really going on out in the world. They obviously knew what was coming so Carson has refused to reply to their calls. The crew has been broadcasting a message to come to Lakota so the convoy keeps picking up survivors along the way. Unfortunately not everyone that survived should have. Meanwhile, Jessie and his three friends have made it to his house and have everything in hand until boredom sets in which results in a decision that will cost them dearly. Lacy and Phil, another co-worker finally escape from the office building while others decide to ride it out and stay. The Jihadis never thought in the long term so their victory may be short lived as we find out pockets of survivors are starting to resurface around the globe. Can the crew defeat the fanatical Muslims that are going to be heading their way to eradicate them? Can Cheyenne Mountain help defeat the false President? Will Gunny be reunited with Lacy and Jessie? Maybe some of these questions will be answered in the next book in this awesome series. I highly recommend this book and series to lovers of the zombie/horror genre.
David Simpson has done one great job with this second installment of or maybe I should just say the second book in this series. This book is even better than book one and I can't wait to see where David goes from here, definitely worth the 5 star rating I gave it and one I recommend highly to others to read. "Gunny" working on getting everyone to a safe place, to try and start over, his wife Lacy, finally getting to work her way home and Jesse, his son going along with his friends, to have some fun, when it may be the last thing they ever live to do. It was also super that David brings in some new characters like Hasif, who knows and worked with Gunny, and believes in America, but being thousands of miles away, in the middle of people who started this Apocalypse, isn''t sure what to do, even if he could help as the Muslims who want this, get even an idea of where his loyalty stands, he won't live long enough to make a difference. Then there is Casey, who has his own agenda now, and will be even more dangerous, than Gunny or any of the others could even imagine.
LOVED both of the books so far. Cannot wait for number three to be out (asap I hope!!). The character development is fantastic, setting of scenes just as good. The situations are unique and the whole storyline is novel. Not your run of the mill zombie apocalypse book. The military aspect is done very well and is enthralling and on point. An all around perfect military zombie apocalypse book. Except ---- I noticed this in the first book, but it became a bigger hindrance in the second. On a few occasions it is not clear what is going on. I had to reread sections a few times to get the jist of things. A couple of times I actuality had to just leave it as I couldn't figure out what was going on in that moment of text. Not fun. Then there is the problem of a character's name just suddenly appearing. We weren't introduced to the character's name but then suddenly the character has a name out of the blue. Takes some page swiping and back and forth to figure out what happened. So --- all that said, an AWESOME story!! Just some issues a good edit could fix. One of the better series in the genre.
The truckers and vets from the truck stop continue their escape to safety down Zombie Road. Word got around that it was the Middle Eastern terrorists who released the deadly virus turning the world into a lawless battle ground. The fools thought they could protect themselves while killing all the infidels,, but the plan was ill-conceived from the beginning. As we all know, plans don’t survive first contact with the enemy. “What a different world this would be had the old man (Abraham) fallen off his camel and never had any kids.” We follow Gunny and his band of survivors as they search for a secure place to hole-up against the hordes of zombies roaming the countryside. As they execute their run & gun search for a new homestead their ranks swell with like-survivors picked up along the way. Along with the infected, there are those that can’t play nice with others, preferring to take advantage of the lawlessness set loose upon the world. The tension rises and the action picks up as the showdown between good and evil draws ever closer.
Much like the first book this one is a very entertaing, thrill ride of a read. The characters continue to be people you want to read about, despite a lot of them being a bit larger than life, but I think that's part of the appeal.
The action is very in your face gory stuff and the breakneck pace of the writing suits it very well.
I'm still struggling a bit with the cause of outbreak, as it seems a wee bit far-fetched. There is a bit more context in this one and there are hints of it not being so straightforward, but without giving too much away, it's as if the group responsible are acting with an almost hive mentality. It's entirely possible that things will happen in the next book that set me straight though.
Plot niggle aside though, it's ahighly readable book, with an awful lot to recommend it.
The first book was great, I went and got the next two one right afterwards. and started reading...
This one was so -so. In the first book all kinds of things happen and you are cheering for everyone to get what they need done. In this one, well, everything drags on and on and onnnnnnn. Nothing really happens, nothing changes from the end of the first book 'til the end of this one.
It jumps around a bit and sometimes the story and what is happening is not clear, you have to go back to figure it out, but you shouldn't bother because it leads no where...
Plus it makes all women inept, all teens idiots, all Muslims except 1- mass murderers and anyone not a trucker/ex military stupid.
Disappointing, but since I already own the third one I will try it out.
I enjoyed this book very much, I very really give a book a five star rating. Likable characters, good action sequences, fast-paced. I would just like the author to do a lot more with Bridget, her character is very interesting, from a starlit who can't defend herself to a possible G.I. Jane she has a lot of potential. Possibly you might put her with the boys so that she may learn from them. Please don't let this particular bad guy hang around for the next four or five books, that has been done too often. I am eagerly await Ing the next book in the series. Please don't let us have to wait so long.
I was a big fan of the first book, Zombie Road, and I was not disappointed in this book. The main characters were familiar and as the tale unfolded, they became deeper, more vivid and alive. The story line is a continuation from the first story but it in no way slowed down. This book was a roller coaster ride from start to finish.
You meet some new people and new villains emerge. There is quite a bit of foreshadowing mixed in to spice things up. Lessons are learned (usually the hard way) and progress is made on the Zombie Road but there is a long way to go yet. I can't wait until it's time to leave.
I think this is a new author if so these are excellent books. I'm not long-winded so I'll just say I love zombie books and this was a nice change from the standard. The only thing missing for me is there doesn't seem to be many strong women? Maybe I'm a little biased because I'm definitely not a passive or weak woman (and never have been) I actually find myself getting mad at Bridget for not being more assertive LOL. So yeah that's about it for why I didn't give it five stars, I mean come on there's got to be few strong women. Between me and my daughters there's at least three in this household alone!! :)
OMG!! So realistic, I get anxious just reading it!!!
I am a zompoc fan, but many stories seem cookie cutter, this is a whole new recipe all on its own..(sorry for the bad pun,lol)! The ideas spouted forth in this story are so realistic, it makes one realize how quickly something like this might happen some day, and if it ever happens in my lifetime, I hope and pray that I am near men like Gunny, and like my husbamd, who are combat veterans who don't hesitate to get the job done.
I promise you, this book will give you a whole knew respect and perspective of our veterans..definitely a must read!!!!!!
The best thing about this series is that the characters are just every day folks. They just ass to help each other and do what’s right. Yes there are a lot of former soldiers but that doesn’t make them any less of an every day person. This is one of my favorite zompoc series so far. Very interested in what the Dr’s are doing with their serums. What will happen to all of the innocent Muslims who are in the states who did not go on the pilgrimage. Will any of them be spared. Eric Shelman does an amazing job narrating the series.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review
The greatly anticipated continuation of the incredible story that David gave us in the first book does not disappoint! Written flawlessly, with all the characters I loved along with new ones and some great twists that takes the story further into the battle between good and evil in a zombie apocalypse makes for a fantastic, entertaining story from start to finish. It could have been longer, (Ha!) but I'll be looking forward to more chills, thrills and laughter in the next one!!!
I really enjoyed this book by David Simpson, it is the second book in the Zombie Road series. It is the story of truck drivers and what happens to them during a zombie apocalypse. My favorite is Gunny, who is trying to get back to check on his wife and son. Meanwhile, he is conned into believing that he is the new President. This is a fast paced series with lots of action and if that is what you like, I really recommend that you try this series. You will not be sorry.
An entertaining read from a perspective I am unfamiliar with.
Everyone approaches this genre with more-or-less the same problems and solutions, but different characters. So far, this series has offered some interesting departures from the formulaic tropes of the genre. The vector for contagion, the solutions provided by the survivors and the mechanics involved are unique. There is some faulty science and odd character choices, but this is a genuinely entertaining read and worth your time.
This is quite a good series considering the whole zombie theme has been done to death (no pun intended) in other books. The variation on how it is brought about brings it into the realm of believable. Being raised in an era where correct spelling and grammar were part and parcel of schooling it really grates to keep on reading the word ‘drug’ instead of ‘dragged’. Other than that small pedantry I am enjoying the twist and turns of the story and really look forward to the fourth in the series being released.
This second book doesn't disappoint. As the survivors make their way to the designated safety zone Gunny worries about his family. All he wants to do is go & get them but he has to make sure the survivors will be safe & to do that they need supplies. One of the reasons I really enjoy this series is that we get to see people at their best, helping others & realising that they need others to survive. As with most series set in the USA there is an over dependence on guns & I would like to see some better & more creative solutions to dispatching zombies.
This book is so much better than the first one and I loved the first!! A much deeper story and better character development. You can tell the story is getting exciting and really taking flight inside the authors mind. You'll not be disappointed!!! After you're finished reading, please leave a review,it's the only way these indie authors spread the word, good or bad.
Just saying, I read a lot and this ex-military truckers with their hardened trucks is a different slant on the zombie apocalypse. I like the military input, skills, toughness of the main characters and their efforts to save others and restore areas of humanity while fighting the Zombies as well as those who created this world ending plague. I was hooked after book 1, now starting book 4, and will continue through this series. Love the team.
This book picked up right where the first one left off. I appreciate it when an author does that, I don’t have to waste time figuring out what is happening. And there is a lot that happens in this one. Just as action packed as the first. Gunny and the Three Flags crew are one bad ass bunch! Now to see that Jessie and Lacy are going to do… Jessie learned a very hard lesson, a much needed one. But he has me a tad worried. On to book 3!!!
After finishing the first book Zombie Road I had to pick up II since the first one was so good. And of course number 2 does not disappoint. I got to say I love these Truckers and they're hardcore zombie-proof trucks. So now that I finished the first two I eagerly await the Third which I hope mr. Simpson is writing. Trust me read both these books you'll love them.
Action packed. Good thing there are lots of prepared folks out there and military trained. Just need a few more people who need oxygen bottles, inhalers, glasses and motorized wheelchairs to be realistic. I like the fact the good guys win but can the zombies grab a few more right-wingers
I couldn't wait to read this after reading book one. I was not disappointed. Love the book, the action continues from book one flawlessly, sucking you right back into the story like you never left. Action packed, plenty of funny wit, gore and zombies. Cancel your plans before you start reading, you're not going to put it down until you're finished reading it!
I am just disappointed that book 3 isn't out yet. I loved the first two books and I can't wait for more. I have been recommending Simpson's books to everyone. He knows how to tell a story and how to keep the readers interested and eager to read more. He is at the top of my list of favorite authors.
