Principal study of American symbolist painter inspired by Albert Pinkham Ryder. Buck was a member of "The Introspectives", a group of New York City subjectivist painters in the teens; later taught at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and was active in the anti-modernist "Sanity in Art" movement in Chicago from 1919 to 1943, when he moved to California where he remained until his death in 1974.
