"A memory-evoking collection of scenes that not only lets readers see summer, but also hear, smell, taste, and feel it as well." -- School Library Journal
When Summer Comes (An Owlet Book) by Robert Maass is a photo-essay about summer activites and experiences.
Maass' photographs vary from small to large, and portray summer experiences like playing on the beach, summer fruit, the last day of school, roller skating, running through sprinklers, vegetable stands, fireworks and parades, knee-high corn, summer insects, dips in streams, fishing, music at street fairs, county fairs, baseball, hot dogs and watermelon, lemonade stands and ice cream, picking berries, cold drinks, carnival rides, and school restarting. Many pictures focus on children. My favorite images include a collander of blueberries, eating a strawberry, fireworks, knee-high corn, beach castles, rushing stream, county fair, eating watermelon, ice cream, cold drink, and back on the bus.
While the several of the early photographs are dated, particularly the cover and roller skating photos, the book should open up a flood of summer memories. For me the summer crops, and county fair pictures, evoke the most memories. While today there would be photos of i-phones, skateboards, soccer, and more, this is still a thoughtful look at the many pleaures summer brings, including sounds, smells, sights and tastes.
