Coppola walks us through and gives us resources for how writing should be taught. She debunks the myths of writing instruction and argues for a better, more engaging and authentic move into what works for all students. This is an excellent book for any English Language Arts teacher who needs a reminder, a return, or a renewal of best, research-based, practices in writing instruction. It's a must read for all K-12 educators who teach writing.
This was a professional book that should be swallowed whole. Her wit, humor, and gentle nudges will help you reconsider some tired practices you may want to change for the sake of the students you serve. I love how she parallels teaching and parenting as this complex task which demands constant renewal. Shawna Coppola understands the joys, frustrations, and beauty of teaching. I highly recommend this book to ALL teachers!
Relevant and relatable thinking on writing in schools. The lack of "real" writing in high schools has always bothered me and Coppola's discussions on how to renew instruction speak to the heart of the matter.
