A modern sequel to the horror manga classic Devilman!
When high schooler Fudo Akira merged with the demon Amon, he became Earth's darkest hero: Devilman. The armies of Hell itself trembled at his name. But not even Devilman could stop the end of the world--nor could he save the woman he loved. Now he must descend to the underworld to bring her back. But first he must defeat Hades, the Emperor of Darkness, no matter what the cost.
The epic Devilman/Mazinger Z crossover starts here!

2,5/5. This didn't do it for me. The storyline is too thin and the illustrations became very blurry in action scene so it's often hard to see what is really happening. I already have the second one so I will give it a try but I was expecting more from this series!
An above average start to the official sequel to the original Devilman series, and considering it wasn't until reading the second half of that original series I learned to appreciate it for the masterpiece that it is, I will definitely continue on with this series and hope for the same. Artwork by Team Moon is really good, although there is the occasional panel that is hard to understand what is going on.
Really solid start to the series. Having started getting an interest in Devilman since the Netflix adaptation I picked this up and wasn’t sure what I expected, but was going in expecting something dark and serious. While at the beginning it is a little self serious, it adds plenty of levity as the story goes on and takes it in a very, “manga” direction, for lack of a better word, which I found myself really enjoying compared to other classic manga reboots and retellings. Having not read the original series, it gives just the right amount of information needed for returning characters without leaving you completely lost in its lore. Absolutely gave me a curiosity to read the original while also feeling enough like it’s own thing. Looking forward to the next volume!
A solid read if you are a fan of the character. Continues the story whether you saw the 80's-90's OVAs, the netflix series or original manga.continues right after the end of that story and brings an action-revenge tale with great art by Team moon. my only complain is the fact of the use of black/grey tones in a way that it's very difficult to figure out what's happening in A LOT of panels in the printed version. Really sad 'cause the art is great. Also, it's a welcome treat the somewhat lenghty interview with Devilman Creator, Go Nagai, at the end of the volume, hope the do this kind of stuff with all their volumes.
Story 2,0/5 Zeichenstil 2,6/5 Charaktere 1,6/5 Gesamt 2,0/5
One of my sons is a Go Nagia fan, and so I read this as "next step" collection that his brother gave him. That said, I lack any of the previous steps, which leaves me at a decided disadvantage.
Should I check out Mazinger Z and other Devilman delights, perhaps. This quick set of stories seems to weave in a lot of familiar afterlife myths and monsters. Zombies are given a sort of interesting injection. It feels like ultimately it is leading up to a game-recognize-game for Devilman and Hades.
Devilman breaking out in a high school boy who has shall we say broken up with his girlfriend might speak to the target audience. Never mind the pimples, behold one truly blacker than blackhead. Teenage solipsism is hard to beat, I know I've missed it for decades.
As for the artwork, to my simple eye there is more black than on a goth's eyebrows, and there is that sort of Japanese disoriented drawing for horror where you have to sort of twist your ocular nerve around the images to figure out what it is you are seeing. Or maybe these are all Team Moon reflections of early Nagai artwork.
Might try to get track down complete collections of Go's earlier work before he's gone.
My first foray into Devilman, took a wee while to get going but picked up towards the end & am looking forward to seeing where it goes. Only real criticism is the printing is quite dark, sometimes can be bit hard to figure out what is going on. But it is a horror manga. Definitely be picking up the next one anyway!
Catgirl and crow sidekicks! If anything, the nudity is toned down and the violence kicked up a notch from a typical Go Nagai series. However, I do want to object that Devilman and Mazinger /have/ met before, in the animated and incorrectly named "Mazinger Z vs Devilman." They are, as always, on the same side.
This could have been really good. The arts great, plenty of action and drama. The main reason I didn’t like it was the fact it doesn’t give you enough information about the original story before jumping into the new conflict. I was lost and wasn’t invested in the characters. By the end of the first book I just didn’t care.
I liked revisiting the world of Devilman. This first part was good and I’m excited to see where the story goes in the next two books. I really loved learning new characters. I’ve never read the Mazinger Z manga I’m not sure it’s been translated to English, if not I would love for it to be. I’m new to manga and I really like Go Nagai worlds he builds.
