"No one tells a love story like Marie Force or makes characters come alive for the readers. She has an incredible ability to pull you into the story and long after you finish the book the scenes still play out in your head and your heart. I have to be honest, Light After Dark wasn't my favourite visit to Gansett Island. Something was missing and it didn't hold the spark that these books usually do for me.
"I laugh more and smile more with you than I have with anyone in far too long."
Don't get me wrong it's romantic but at the same time less sexy and fittingly so in some respects, and I did like Mallory and Quinn as individuals and a couple. However, considering their pasts, everything was a bit too easy and agreeable, with the story feeling rushed, unfinished and failing to hold the emotion I know Force is capable of: something these characters deserved.
In comparison to many of its predecessors, it was average. Nevertheless I'm still looking forward to returning to the island in the future.
Ever since author Marie Force revealed that “Big Mac” McCarthy had a child he knew nothing about, I’ve been intrigue by Mallory Vaughn and was thrilled that she would have her own story. Light After Dark is that story and the title is perfect for Mallory. In a year’s time Mallory lost her Mom, the only family she thought she had, found the father she never knew along with a step-mother who loves her like her own and four brothers, a sister, nephews and nieces, in-laws, uncles, cousins and she just lost her job of 12 years. To top is off Mallory realized she was heading into territory she didn’t care to revisit and has made the decision that the next few months will be The Summer of Mallory; the summer she intends to enjoy her family, deal with her issues, and let go and live.
Life has been a bit dark for Mallory so she heads to Gansett Island to spend the summer with her new family and enjoy her life and while she is struggling with a few things, she soon finds a job for the summer, an offer of a permanent job and has caught the interest of a couple of really nice men which brings out the over protectiveness of her father and her brothers (and quite a few interesting scenes).
Ms. Force asked that we not spoil who Mallory’s love interest is in reviews, so I will just say that he’s a bit mysterious, he is very good to her, he has some baggage, but he is someone who talks to her and shares her burdens as well, and holy cow their attraction and sexy times are off the chart hot!
While I appreciate catching up with a lot of the other couples in this series, I did kind of feel like Mallory and her beau got a bit lost in the shuffle. However, we saw a lot of Mallory dealing with her past and some of her insecurities and continuing to grow her relationship with her father, Linda, and all of her siblings.
Two people discovering that after the dark comes the light where they find the happiness and love that’s been missing in their lives. Another amazing book in the Gansett Island series, don’t miss Light After Dark.
When I originally started the Gansett Island series I had no clue we would get 16 books but it was such a plus. I always loved big families and Marie Force always gives them so much in love, heartbreak and healing. Once I found out that Big Mac had a daughter that he new nothing about I was hoping in time that we would get her story and I'm so glad Mallory will get her happily ever after while getting to know the family she never knew.
Over the past year Mallory has gone through some big changes in getting a big family, loosing her mom, and just recently let go from her job. She heads to Gansett Island to clear her head to find out what will be next for her, but what she never expected was to find love again and want to stay on the island.
Mallory hasn't had a easy life and she is still struggling with the fact that her mother never told her about her father until her death. While on the island she finds a summer job as a paramedic but when she is offered a more permanent job as nursing director for the new facility that is set to open she really needs to think it through. It will mean she will be on the island closer to the family that she is getting to know but also to the man she recently started dating.
Readers will fall in love with Mallory's love interest as much as I did. He's a great guy who also has had hard times. He just also recently moved to the island to be closer to his bother and oversee the new facility that will be opening in a matter of time. As Mallory and him get closer they start to open up about their pasts and find out that they actually have some things in common. I really liked them together and thought Ms. Force did an excellent job on pairing them together.
The one issues I had with Light After Dark was with so much going on with catching up with all the previous couples I didn't really completely enjoy their building romance as much as I thought I would. They got a little lost in everything else that was going on, but I enjoy keeping up with everyone and some of my favorite parts is when they all were together bickering and having a good time.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading Light After Dark and I am looking forward to continuing this series. If you haven't started this series there is still time and trust me these characters and this island makes you feel like you live there right along with them.
#16 in the Gansett Island series is another winner. As in the previous books in this series, I really think this series needs to be read in order to appreciate the subplots and to understand the backstory of the many recurring characters.
While the main characters here are Mallory Vaughn and Dr. Quinn James, the rest of the McCarthy family and Gansett Island characters also make their appearances and the reader is caught up with where they are in their lives.
I'm starting to wonder if she's phoning these in at this point. The characters are great, but some of these more recent romances happen awfully quickly, despite the fact that the characters are older.
I'm just glad to be caught up with the series at this point. I'll keep reading. It's worth it.
A nice blend of sweet romance with just enough conflict to keep things interesting! It's no secret that I've found a few of the books in this series just a bit too sugary, sweet for my tastes with too little conflict to hold my attention. I'm happy to say Light After Dark is not one of those! I fell in love with Mallory & Quinn and enjoyed their journey. While both have a past that makes them cautious about moving forward with a relationship, I felt the issues (both physical & mental) were handled realistically without making a mountain out of a mole hill. As always, you'll catch up with the entire Gansett Island cast in this one, but I'm happy to say it's not family "overload" . . . in other words, they compliment Mallory & Quinn's story rather than overshadow it. This is one of my favorite books in the series! A Must Read!
Here we are back on Gansett Island ready to start the summer season off. Mallory has had some huge changes in her life this past year and she's decided to embrace being a McCarthy. Now she has four brothers, a sister a step mom and a dad she never knew along with Uncles, and cousins alike.
What I loved about this is that the secret will remain as to Mallory's love interest until you start to get into the meat of the story. AND I will not tell you who it is, you'll just have to read the book to see who she ends up with.
Since Mallory is getting to be better acquainted with the McCarthy's we get to catch up with all the siblings( one of my favorite parts to this series). If you've been with this series from the beginning you will look forward to each little snippet we get of their lives.
Mallory and her love interest meet up several times before we ever really know who is the leading man to her story. I love that both of them have such a parallel existence. To souls who recognize their like spirit. So not only is she learning her place in Gansett and with her family, she's finding her future.
I will say that the leading man was so well written. I really felt drawn to him from his first entrance to the Gansett scene. The romance between these two is sweet and will sweep you up with them.
Another wonderful visit back to the Island. I've already booked my next trip with Joe on the ferry for my return trip.
Loved this series and I was fortunate enough to read it in one day. Mallory is the newest addition to the McCarthy's family. She is the daughter Mac senior didnt know he had before he married Linda. Mallory found out about him a year ago after the death of her mother. This is her story. Mallory loses her job and comes to the island to figure out what to do. She gets a summer gig with the fire/emt department. As she goes to her AA meetings she becomes intrigued with Dr Quinn James who seem to keep to himself. The Police chief Mason also goes to AA and seemed to like Mallory. In the beginning it look like this story may be a love triangle but as time goes it becomes obvious out of the two men who Mallory likes. Love her talks with her dad, with her brother Mac and her just getting adjusting to being a part of a great big family. I love as always getting to know what the other couples are doing. I would have loved a little more of the previous book lovers Erin and Slim only got a glimpse of them with that I truly enjoyed Mallory's journey and seeing her adjusting to her new life with her new family.
As I read the story, I find myself getting bored with the follow-ups to the previous characters. I want the book to be about the H/h of this book, not updates thrown in of previous characters that don't fit in with this current books' storyline.
Mallory was a wonderful character, as was hero, Quinn. Both have hard a hard life and are uprooted and facing big changes. Their connection was palpable but like i said the whole inserting scenes about previous characters that doesn't really fit the current storyline, to me, takes so much out of the flow and makes it more a drudging read then an excitable read.
Marie Force’s Gansett series has really kept me going in 2020, reading has been a lot slower for me this year and I have not got through books quickly at all, but with Marie Force’s Gansett books I can take my time and fall back in with the series anytime, even if I’ve not had chance to pick up the book for a few days. This one took about a week to read. I really loved Mallory and Quinn.
Another enjoyable book in this series. Love the strong family bonds especially. But each story in the series has a lovely romance, normally fraught with some life issue.
What a fast paced emotional read Light After Dark is involving Gansett Island and the McCarthys. You'll be drawn in whether it's your sixteenth visit or your first or somewhere in between! It was nice to catch up with Big Mac and his family once again and this time his newest daughter, Mallory, is front and center. As she gets to know the family better, that she didn't know she had until a year ago, we get reminded of past events too. There were so many story lines going on at once but they all blended seamlessly and kept my interest from the first page to the last.
There are family and friends, businesses, babies and babies to be, the water, food, parties, injuries, animals, the medical profession represented in various ways, romance, loving and love. This is the Summer of Mallory and what a summer it's shaping up to be. Her summer keeps getting better and better and it's only just the beginning.
There were laugh out loud moments as well as tears, anger, hurt, sorrow, fear, laughter, happiness, good times and parties. There were several happily ever afters and a few more to come in the future. There was some closure but enough loose ends for more books to come!
Force is a wonderful author that keeps reeling me back for more. I loved that in her Thank you's Marie states that there will be a new Gansett Island Episodes series. I for one can't wait!
It was so much fun to go back to Ganset Island and see all our friends and to see what they are up to.. This series is GREAT if you have not read it yet.. I recommend that you start with the first book.. this is a stand alone.. but who would want to miss all the other ones in the series and not fall in love with each and every person in it.. This book is about Mallory and and the Summer of Mallory.. There is babies finally in this one.. :) and a wedding.. and that is all I am going to say.. I have not had time to do much reading this year.. BUT when Maries books come out I take the time to read it. and I never put it down till I got it read... YES ITS THAT GOOD... We just need MORE of Ganset Island, what she can write for us is NEVER enough.. I hope that if you have not read this series yet, ( and the first couple of books in it is free) that you will go find her books and read them cause if you do not your missing some GREAT SERIES that she has.. I have read every book she has wrote.. and will continue to.. Thanks Marie for such a great book.
Love this series. Love this book. Strong characters with tough pasts find each other. Love the angst and the romance and the McCarthy family. Love Marie Force
Mallory, Big Mac's newfound daughter, decides to live on Gansett so she can learn more about her new family. She meets Quinn, a veteran and doctor, who has moved to Gansett to be near his brother and to run the new care facility his brother's wife is building. Both Mallory and Quinn have issues (lots of issues - really too much), but they find each other attractive and decide to try a summer romance that quickly morphs into the real thing. I enjoyed Mallory and Quinn's story, but I had a few issues with some of the writing. I understand that this is the sixteenth book in the series and it's necessary to give some backstory for new readers so they know who the vast array of characters are, but probably half of this book was repetition from the older books. I found this very tedious because I wanted more of this story. I also get that Mallory is excited about her father, but the constant marveling about every little think Big Mac does also became a little wearying. I love the McCarthy's, but I didn't enjoy this book as much as some of the others.
Book: Light After Dark (The McCarthys of Gansett Island #16) Author: Marie Force Publication Date: 12/13/2016 Reviewed by: Tammy Payne- Book Nook Nuts My Rating: 5 Stars
REVIEW Mallory is finding things a bit difficult after learning who her father is, after losing her mother who hid this from her for almost 40 years. She has decided after life through her yet another curve-ball to spend the summer on Gansett Island.
Mallory finds a lot more than herself and he needs her it seems as much as she needs him.
This is such a sweet story. We do get tons of hot but to me it's all pure romance. I have to say I haven't gotten to read many of the books yet in this series but I hope some day soon. Can't wait to see what the next book holds in store for us as many of the families have exciting things going on. Marie Force
Let me just say I love Marie's books couldn't wait for this one to come out I think this is the first book I've read of gansett who we didn't know who the other person was going to be, so when it was release I kind of skipped to who it was...yes I was disappointed because I wanted Mason so off to work I go at 5am and a hour 1/2 drive to work..so after reading Mallory and Quinn's story it started off good but the end left me wondering needing more of Quinn's back story of how he got hurt and why all of a sudden he becomes really clumsy. Loved Mallory's interaction with Big Mac and Linda and how she's been dealing with her mothers death and feeling conflicted about the anger she felt toward her. Over all a good book but I felt something missing or I needed more...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I'm dreaming of a Block Island get away..... another dreamy chance to catch up with my buds! I liked we had older characters here. And new hurdles always keep a storyline fresh. I'm wondering if my favorite island is getting just a bit small. Hoping for some more out of this one. We'll just call it not a series favorite. Still a favorite series!
Such a great story about Mallory and Quinn. She's a special girl in the McCarthy family and he is a special guy. Their story is beautiful and the updates on everyone in the series are great!
Love reading this series among other by Marie Force.
Natomiast wątki poboczne, opisujące kontynuację losów innych postaci, wypływają w sposób w miarę logiczny z okoliczności zdeterminowanych czasem i miejscem akcji.
Oh how I have missed Gansett Island with all "my" family and friends. I can't imagine anyone reading one of the books and not feeling like you belong. You are one of them. They are so real and marvelous. They are one big, wonderful, happy, loving family made up of blood and "adopted" members. I want to go live on Gansett Island!! I wish Marie could write my name in one of the books and I would be there. Wouldn't that be awesome?! All of Marie's books are like that, so extraordinary, you can't help but love everything about them.
Each book is a standalone that you can read in any order but is a lot more fun if read in order, starting with book one. Each book, after the first one, has recurring characters that you have come to know and love.
Mallory is struggling to come to terms with the fact that her wonderful, loving mother kept her and her father apart for almost 40 years, only telling her about him in a letter after her death. She has now had the whole, boisterous, do anything for you, love you to death McCarthy family in her life for about a year and she couldn't be happier. But at the same time she is dealing with repressed anger at her mother plus she just got laid off from her job that she dedicated the last 12 years of her life to. Needing to feel loved and wanted she heads to Gansett Island to be with that incredible McCarthy clan. Quinn is a medically discharged, military trauma surgeon that has come to Gansett Island to run the new long term medical facility at his brother's request. Almost from the moment Mallory and Quinn meet, the sparks fly. After running into each other a few times, Quinn invites her to dinner and she happily accepts. While the attraction is real and strong, they each have a lot of baggage they are trying to deal with. Are they ready to explore what is happening between them or are they too mired in the past to see what could be?
In this latest Gansett Island book, you don't just have Mallory and Quinn's story. You also get to spend time with beloved past characters and see what is happening in their lives. You have a birth and a wedding to look forward to and a bit of past drama to wrap up. You also have the love, loyalty, family and friendship, you have come to know and love. Welcome back to the island, I hope you enjoy your stay!!
Once again Marie Force invites her readers back to Gansett Island to fall in love with the McCarthy family and their friends! Marie does an amazing job making you feel like you're a part of her Gansett Island family. Each one of her Gansett Island books makes you feel like you're returning home. This time we get to really know Mallory. Big Mac and Mallory have just recently learned that they are father and daughter, a secret that Mallory's mom kept from both of them. She comes to Gansett Island trying to figure out how to deal with the loss of her job, the loss of her mother and her growing anger with her mother's secret, as well as her relationship with her new family. Thus begins the Summer of Mallory! I loved reading Mallory's point of view on the loving, boisterous and always entertaining McCarthy family. Getting to know Big Mac and all her new siblings was such an amazing, emotional journey. When she meets Quinn they discover they have so much in common. Both of them have come to Gansett Island to recover from their own tragic past and to find themselves. What they find in each other is someone who understands the hurt of a painful past. As their love for each other grows they come to love and support each other uncondionally. They take this journey from the dark to the light together with the support of their family and friends. This book was an amazing story. As you're getting to know Mallory and Quinn you also get to catch up with some of your favorite charachters from past books. Marie has a remarkable gift when it comes to telling a new story while incorporating past charachters so that you feel like you can keep in touch with all your Gansett Island friends. Thank you Marie for sharing this wonderful story with your fans! I look forward to my next trip to Gansett!
