It's hard enough when your parents separate, but when they form new relationships, everything changes again. Keri's mother has met a new man and he has two children, Sara and Thomas. Sara, who is a couple of years older than Keri, makes it clear that they will never be best friends. Keri is content to leave it that way, but Sara's behaviour gets worse, and it's not just teenage moodiness. On a family ski holiday Keri finds herself in a dangerous situation. Sara's younger brother Thomas has skied off into out-of-bounds terrain because of something Sara said to him in anger. Keri seems to be the only one who can save him.
Jenni Francis was born in London, England and moved with her family to New Zealand when she was eight years old, for which she will be eternally grateful. Jenni has trained as a teacher, and a teacher of deaf children, as well as completing a degree in education. She began writing after her first grandchild was born, and has continued writing novels and short stories. Having had a wide range of different life experiences, including living and working on a dairy farm for two years, Jenni has much to draw on to fill out her novels. Skiing, beach holidays, school camps and school life are part of the background to her novels. She has been involved with children in her capacity as a teacher, a mother and a grandmother, and now as an author of children’s books and has always enjoyed interactions with children. She intends to keep writing for children until she runs out of ideas, which won’t be anytime soon! Jenni lives on five acres with an orchard, a pond a stream and a neighbours sheep. She has eleven grandchildren and she lives with her husband, a dog and a cat.
This book was one that I won from the giveaways. It is not the type of book that I would normally read, but it was a good read. It was a story that made you look at several perspectives. It makes you think about what other people are going through and how much they might try to hide the pain and reality from everyone else.
Not typically what I would read, but I really enjoyed it! I loved the story line of Keri, and her family and having to meet the Mom's new boyfriend and his kids! Oh wow!! Sara......couldn't stand her but then it came out in the end of why she was like how she was! Keri was able to handle everything with grace, and no wonder her mom would help her as much as she could! What a story line though!
A very strong 3 stars. "Cold as Ice" is a good read especially for preteens. It deals with some difficult issues in an age appropriate ways: divorce, blending families, new schools, and more.
