"If you run away, no matter how far you run, you're still going to be stuck with yourself." After getting rejected by the only guy that he's ever allowed himself to feel something more than lust for, Max Williams has convinced himself that the bachelor's life is the only way for him to live. At 28, Max has everything he needs for it: a smoking body, just enough money to keep the drinks coming, and an endless supply of guys that are more than happy to keep his bed warm at night. Still, he can't shake the feeling that something is missing.
When he loses his day job thanks to his partying and the modeling career he'd been trying to build collapses, Max isn't sure of so sure of himself anymore, but there's one thing he knows without a doubt: something's got to give.
"I know you might feel like some sort of black sheep-and maybe you are sometimes-but we all are."
Lucas White has a reputation of his own-and he's tired of it. The security provided by his cushy job as editor-in-chief of a legendary local photography magazine has kept him stagnant for too long both professionally and personally. He never dreamed he'd be able to retire by the age of 45 and start his own passion project, but that's exactly where he's found himself and it hasn't been an easy transition.
While celebrating his last day at the office, Lucas and Max get up close and personal at a new bar and Lucas's entire world turns into a photo negative. Max is the perfect model that he's been looking for to bring fresh eyes to his new venture, but he looks so much like someone who once broke his heart-and Lucas isn't sure that he can look at Max's beautiful body every day for work without continuing to touch it.
"I've spent way too much of life my on my own, trying to do everything myself. You helped me see that. I don't want to be alone anymore. I want to be with you."
Against his better judgment, Lucas hires Max. As they start working together, the line between employer and employee quickly blurs, and not even the pact they made to remain strictly professional seems to keep things in focus. Though they know better, neither man can resist their desire for something more-but Max is afraid of commitment, and Lucas can't stomach the idea of being taken advantage of by another pretty face.
Will their differences bring them down, or will they come together like sugar and spice?
Sugar & Spice is a lighthearted, fun, and steamy 75,000-word contemporary romance novel with a May-December theme. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed HEA.
Sugar & Spice is the second novel in the Spice of Life series. Though it can be read on its own, it's made all the more fun when read as part of the series. The series begins with Salt & Pepper.
Garett Groves is a new M/M romance author based in Southwest Florida. There he enjoys spending time with his husband and their two cats. Their hobbies include: being disgustingly codependent, sleeping, eating junk food, and drinking copious amounts of red wine. Sadly, their cats don't share in the wine drinking--yet!
*** They set aside their differences and let go. *** Lucas, a famous photographer, a tall, 45 yr. old, older bear with salt and pepper hair and blue eyes, needs a model for his new project. Max, 20s, young, beautiful, waiter/model with curly hair and brown eyes, is jobless. After an embarrassing night of drinking way too much, saying too much, and losing his job, he goes back to the bar to sulk. Lucas shows up there for his retirement party, and he and Max hook up for the night. Lucas needed a model and asks if Max is interested, and of course he is. They try to keep it professional, but the pull between them is intense. They do talk, share backgrounds and really get along. Max's ex, Ryan is also a photographer and Lucas makes a BIG mistake; a mistake because it backfires big time. Who's going to stop the stalemate? Loved the older/younger, hairy/smooth, tall/short, and their sexy times are sizzling, emotional and extremely passionate. It scares them both. Neither wants to be hurt ever again. We get fun ancillary characters, hot sex, plus a tale of learning to let go and give love a chance. ENJOY ! ==========
This suffers from some of the same problems as book one in terms of inconsistencies and weird character reactions, but not nearly to the same degree. It was still kind of a mess, but a forgivable mess.
The time line overlaps with book 1, and we get a few "same scene different perspective" moments, and normally I love that. Those scenes fell a little flat to me. They read a certain way in book 1 and in book 2, I think the goal was to "show the other side", but... the behavior, the dialogue, and the character reactions that were present in book 1 didn't mesh with the characters as they are written in book 2. It felt shoehorned in like the author didn't actually plan it that way, but then said, hey, you know what'd be cool? Nice idea. I can appreciate it, but it didn't work for me.
Those issues aside, I liked the book. It was cute and sweet. I liked most of the character interactions when they weren't purposely misunderstanding each other or overreacting to something trivial. I enjoyed seeing the side characters again. I'm a big Lance fan. Team Lance, all the way. I was super excited to read his book.
I reviewed this book as part of an arc program. I loved this book, it was a sequel to Salt & Pepper but can be read alone. At first I didn't want to like Max and Lucas because of the first book, but this one tells their side of the story and I understood them and ended up loving them. Max was a model who was always told how beautiful he was and he didn't want to take any responsibility for anything, he thought everyone was beneath him and he would move on to better things. Max's roommates were getting sick of his attitude and he couldn't keep a job. Max even had a huge fight with his friend Ryan, a photographer whose story is told in Salt & Pepper. Lucas is a famous photographer who retires from the magazine he published in order to do a photo book on the male form. Lucas wants Max to model for him. Lucas was hurt in the past and has given up on love, until he meets Max. Max is also wary about relationships because he thinks he is not worthy of love and only attracts men because of his looks. Max and Lucas actually make a great pair after they learn to trust each other and accept themselves. I love Garret's books and think he is a great writer because he makes you care about the characters and feel their emotions. Well done!
OMG, I love Garret Groves' books!!! Every time I've read one I cannot put it down until I'm done. He puts a love story together so well between too to people and just wow...makes it works. I just ha e to this out there that I! I'm a heterosexual woman but damn it I loved this story between these two men and I could careless where people find their love and I love laughing and crying with his characters, especially Lance he's just fabulous. I wish I had a friend like him to just be so damned honest it hurt but true. I know Groves is new but he is awesome and I love him with all my being!!! Keep them coming and I'll keep reading💋💋
I don't like this series. I read the first book and didn't like it. I completely forgot this book was connected to that one until I started reading. Even though this book was incredibly long for the plot line, it felt rushed. I wasn't the biggest fan of Ryan or Max after the first book. So, I had a feeling I wasn't going to like the second book and I was right but for different reasons. While Max acted ridiculous in the first book, Ryan had no business looking down at Max for working with Lucas considering he was screwing his subject as well. Everyone in the town seems so shallow. There's no real conflict, just people being petty and not in a fun way.
Max finds himself at loose ends after falling out with Ryan both romantically and professionally. He's now lost his job to his partying ways. Drowning his sorrows at the bar, he meets Lucas, who after an evening romp offers him a job. Max can't believe that he's attracted to the much older man, but that he's offered him work when he most needs it. Can Max and Lucas work and love together at the same time, or will their doubts and insecurities blow them apart? Both men have to learn to trust and share their feelings in this age gap romance.
When you have been taken advantage from in the past and it's hard to get beyond those feelings, how do you overcome them to love someone else? When you meet that one person that you feel something for that is beyond what you ever felt, can you honestly believe it's true? When you can overcome your own insecurities and misunderstandings, love and happiness will follow. That is exactly what this book is about. I voluntarily read an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book. Enjoy
If you had read Salt & Pepper, you know Max wasn't the most likeable character in the world. So, when you begin to read this new book you'll be surprised to feel how he slowly but steadly growns on you. The backstory in both, Max and Lucas, helps to build an understanding of these men and gives you the foundation for the love you'll end feeling for them. Another great book by Garett Groves. I'm really looking forward for more :D
This is a wonderful continuation of the Spice of Life series...following the lives, and mishaps, of Max, Lucas, Tim and Ryan. David and Lance have a bigger role in this book and Lance definitely needs his own book!
How guys can make so many mistakes while trying to do the right thing is amazing. Luckily they have second (and third) chances to get things right!
4.5 stars. Lucas and Max carry around huge amounts of self doubt. They've been burnt by people using them; Max for his looks and Lucas for his power and wealth. There's quite a bit of back and forth but once Lucas makes his grand overture these two fall together perfectly. It impressed me that they desired to rectify the wrongs that they had done and made steps to do so. Adult read
A well written story of how Max and Lucas find their way to becoming a couple. Max is an aspiring model who is a bit of a flake and has a reputation for being unreliable whereas Lucas is a newly retired 45 year old magazine editor and successful photographer. When they meet sparks fly and they can't stay away from each other that is until Lucas makes a big error in judgement in trying to bring him together with his ex to work on a project with disastrous results. Will they ever find their way back?
This second entry in the Sugar and Spice series is deeply moving and shows many struggles that come with May/December romance and differences in their places in the world Lucas a highly successful and talented photographer and Max whi is an aspiring model whose beauty has always gotten him by but his reputation as a flake has dried up his opportunities. Read this book if your looking for a hot May/December romance.
If you loved Salt & Pepper (book 1 of A Spice of Life Novel) then you will love this book. This book tells the story of Max who has lost his best friend (Ryan book 1) and Lucas an older man. After a night together Lucas finds out Max has lost his job and offers him one modelling. Max thinks all his dreams have come true but is the job all it seems? After feeling betrayed by Lucas Max confides in his and Ryan's mutual friend Lance who convinces Max to listen to Lucas. Will Lucas convince Max to try again? Will Max and Ryan make up? Well you will need to read it to find out!!!! Great series so far Garett. Next book please!
I'm voluntarily reviewing an ARC of this book. Sugar & Spice by Garett Groves is the second book in the A Spice of Life series. This is the second book of Garett's I have now read and I'm hooked. I love these two books. The characters are fantastic and I love the storylines. These books Salt & Pepper and Sugar & Spice are both during the same time period. The first one being in Ryan's life and point of view and the second being in Max's life and point of view. The two friends have had a falling out. These two stories were hard to put down. Definitely a must read!!!!!
Lucas is a renowned photographer, who recently handed over the reins of Pride magazine to his best friend David. In the bar where he celebrates his retirement he is stared at by Max, a gorgeous man twenty years his junior. They hit it off immediately and they leave together for a hot night. Lucas has ideas for a new photoproject and Max is the perfect model. He offers Max a job, which Max gladly takes as he this his long time dream. Both men soon realize that mixing business with pleasure is not the best course of action.
Garett has written a fast paced story with a good plot. I was pulled into the story right from the beginning and I flew through the pages. At times it was very funny with witty banter. Further down the book it became more serious when Max and Lucas face reality of being in a relationship. Max is a mixture of arrogance and sweetness, of confidence and modesty. Lucas is self-conscious about his appeal to Max, partly due to his age and partly because he has been burned before. He wants to help solve Max’s strained friendship with Ryan, but he makes a huge mistake. I wanted to hit him on the head for being so stupid. Max was perfect for him and he ruined it. They have good friends in David and Lance (he is hilarious), who help them open their eyes.
This book is the second one in the Spice of Life series. It is not really a sequel as it is set in the same time frame. This book can be read as a stand alone, but you will enjoy it much more if you read Salt & Pepper first. It also gives you more understanding about the relationship between Max and Ryan.
I detested both Max and Lucas in book one. After getting to know them, I understood their actions and gave them a chance to redeem themselves in this book. They never did become the quintessential main characters that we would normally expect from a romance novel, but they did make enough of a moral and emotional journey to qualify as characters you would want to see get and keep their happiness. I was glad that they got their HEA and it was a sweet, if improbable, scenario orchestrated by the lovably dense Lucas. The sex scenes were hot, and I was glad that the age difference didn't play too much of a part in the characters thoughts and feelings. I particularity enjoyed Lance's part in this book. I enjoy this author's work and will continue to read what he gifts us with.
I am voluntarily reviewing the advance reader copy I received from the author.
Max wants to be a model and he has the body for it. He is also very immature and lashes out when angry or hurt. Lucas is ready to retire early and work on his own projects. Falling for the hotty at the bar was not what he imagined happening. Lucas does not wnat to cross the line of professionalism with Max, but he cannot help but want more. It was nice to read what was happening with Lucas from a different perspective compared to the previous book. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
I'm loving this Spice of Life series by Garett Groves! An excellent job on both books for this new author! Sugar & Spice is another May- December romance featuring Lucas and Max. When I first encountered Lucas and Max in Salt & Pepper, I got a completely different impression on what both of them were like and didn't really like either of them that much. However, upon reading this book, I found out they were nothing like I thought and I grew to like them.
This book isn't really a sequel, as it's set during the same timeframe as Salt & Pepper. I have enjoyed Groves' writing and look forward to more great romances in his future! I would definitely recommend this book if you like m/m and May-December romances. I voluntarily read an advance reader's copy of this book.
A more than decent book in the series, covering some of the same events as the first but from a different PoV. Max comes over as less self-centered - and in fact redeems himself a lot here; Lucas is also seen in a much more favourable light - he is a very different character than the one we see in the first book (very briefly, in fact - and in a pivotal scene where the focus is very much on Ryan and rightly so). The erotic scenes seem more charged (and more!) than I remember from the first book!
A splendid read - I got an ARC but have since coughed up for a pukka copy on Amazon!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
What a beautiful story of how Max and Lucas came together! Also, it answered some questions I had regarding the end of Salt & Pepper! Another well done story by Gareth Groves
Sugar & Spice Ok to be honest I didn't like Max or Lucas at all in Salt & Pepper, I thought that they both were just asses. As always there is two sides to each story...Max and Lucas still at times come across as jerks but they have their reasons for the way the act. Both just wanting love and their journey to that HEA was not easy and lot of forgiveness was needed to get there. This story is emotional and very sweet. I received a copy for an honest review.
I totally enjoyed this very tender story of a new and developing relationship between a 45 year old retiring photojournalist and an impetuous young man in his early twenties with a desire to model but who really had limited education and employment skills. The story was more than I expected and involved a myriad of missed opportunities to communicate honestly and effectively between the two men. Lucas is only 45 but retiring from his position as cofounder and Editor in Chief of Pride magazine. The last thing he wanted to do was go out for a drink with his replacement and other long-time co-workers. When he reached the bar, there were too many people and it was too noisy, too much attention focused on him and his group. Until, "Oh, Hello", when he noticed a young, very attractive and fit man staring at him from across the room. After a challenge from his friends he headed towards the man because, of course, he's still got game and his friends didn't give him much choice. It has been forever since a man that hot and young looked with such interest at him. His usual hesitation didn't apply because for certain this man didn't even know his name so he couldn't be after anything, could he? A connection? Lucas had a really bad experience being taken advantage of by a young boyfriend and he is wary. Too wary. Lucas didn't really have a long-term plan for his retirement and solitude, he discovered, isn't that satisfying but this new young man looks like he might satisfy, entirely.
Max is not the most dependable guy, in fact he is likely the least dependable guy you know. Forgets about going to work. He drinks to blackout and makes awkward seem refined. He's not a bad guy but doesn't have a darned thing to look forward to. Then it gets worse. Trust is a problem for both Max and Lucas. Both men feel outclassed by the other, but for different reasons. Max can't understand what Lucas sees in him and doesn't trust the relationship. When things go bad, he is quick to bail. Lucas, primarily because of the age difference, feels that all he needs to do things for Max to prove his worth and he ruins everything. How can this possibly work?
I really liked the first book of the series "Salt & Pepper" and this book is closely related to the first story, so I strongly suggest that you read Salt & Pepper first, also because it gives you insights, backgrounds and consequences of one of the fundamental scenes of Salt & Pepper. In the first book, Lucas and Max where the "negative" side characters and I must say that my opinion of Lucas did not improve when reading his story in "Sugar & Spice". This man just does not understand when he hurts other people, he is pretty self-centred: just read the scene when he tries to apologise near the end of the book and you will understand that for him self-image is very important in his life (he is a famous photographer), and this makes it impossible for him to understand fully other people's feelings. Max, on the other hand, improved a lot in this book and I still don't understand why he continues to put up with Lucas. I also read the bonus scene "Over & Under" available from the newsletter of Garett Groves and I still don't get the relationship between the two characters. Lucas just imposes his views and wishes on Max. Anyway I give this story 4 full stars because the description of the characters (if I don't like Lucas is also because he was well depicted), the storyline and the writing overall. Can't wait for a new book of this series.
