Kat has survived. She returns to Athelia as herself, Katherine Wilson. Edward, elated at learning she is alive, vows to bring her back to the palace. The obstacles, however, seem impossible to overcome. Marriage between a royal and a commoner is not recognized, not to mention that he is already legally bound to Katriona Bradshaw, who will do anything to keep her position as princess. And there’s even more to worry about. Due to an uncommonly harsh winter, the people of Athelia have been suffering from inflated food prices, and are getting irritated at supporting the small, elite group of aristocrats. An uprising in a neighboring country only adds fuel to the fire. Can Kat and Edward finally get a happily-ever-after?

The grammatical errors in this book drove me nuts - it definitely needed some more editing. BUT - I stuck with it because I needed to see Kat and Edward get their happily never after!!

I like the first two books in the series and was very disappointed in this one. It needed SO MUCH more editing and I wished the story of Kat and Edward wrapped up after the first or second book because I only finished this one because I wanted to know how it ended.

The book had so many errors in grammar or missing words. The amount of errors was ridiculous, so I started highlighting them on my kindle when I got about 88% of the way through. For example, "I wants to put my arms around him" or "She introduce us to her boyfriend, David..." I knew what she was trying to say, but all of the errors made it distracting to try to read.

Then there were parts that she repeated over and over the same thoughts that Kat had. Things that maybe we could have heard a few times, but not as many times as she said them. But then she'd completely skip over scenes that I'd like to have seen. Different things that seemed like major plot points were resolved in a few lines. The pacing was WAY off.

I found this to be a disappointing end to the series. I really enjoyed the first one, felt so-so about the second one, and I couldn't even finish this one. I skimmed the last 20% because I couldn't take it anymore. I liked how Kat and Edward challenged each other in book one, but by the end of this one, the "I literally can't live without you/I'm going to control you" relationship was giving me Twilight vibes.
As other reviews have mentioned, the grammatical errors were incredibly distracting. I started highlighting them in my kindle after a while because there were SO MANY. I probably should have also highlighted how many times I read "dang" and "make out session" because it felt like they were on every page.

After finishing Twice Upon A Time I couldn’t wait to read the third book in the Unfinished Faiy Tales series by Aya Ling: Ever After. I had read mixed reviews of the second book, so when purchasing it I also made sure I got the third in my order, as I at least wanted to give it a chance. I am happy I did, so I could pick up immediately right where we left off. However, I did hope we would get a bit different story than the first two books, maybe some more depth too. The cover text did spill one thing, or at least I hoped it did: no memory loss this time?

When I started the book, I immediately noticed I was right: Kat remembered everything this time, even though it meant she was a heartbroken mess. Dealing with the loss of your one true love, certainly if you are both alive but unable to contact one another ever again, isn’t an easy task. This is not only how we get to know how her life is on return as time has passed in her absence – unlike in the first book where time had stood still – but we also get to know Mom and Paige better. About their lives, about their relationship with Kat and… how they would react to the truth about Kat’s disappearance. Loved finding that out.

The book has a similar build up as the first two in the series, but at a quicker pace: Kat and Edward are separated, getting together but not yet really together, political angle dealing with at the same time, more politics, attempt to be together at last. But this time without the memory loss. Instead we deal with the mess made by the impersonation, taking over Katriona Bradshaw’s life. Cleaning up loose ends, and not just ignoring them.

Another aspect I like about this book is that it continues the world building that started in the first book, but more extensive in the second book with the history and foreign countries. Now we also visit Moryn, get to know more about Athelia and the town but also: we get to know more about the people. Not just the aristocrats where most of the story has taken place so far, or just a quick visit, but we hear their voices, their way of life. Of all, and not just the children because of the political attempts by Kat to improve their way of life with her modern world knowledge. We get to know more about the society and the social differences – and of course the way to deal with it. As this is also important for the relationship between Kat and Edward, now she is herself, a commoner, instead of the daughter of the late Earl Bradshaw.

What I actually really loved, was exactly what I missed in Twice Upon A Time: in Ever After we FINALLY get Edwards perspective in the book! In the first book you don’t really miss it, as it is Kat her story. But in the second book I really missed this part, which made it feel like book 1 and 2 were at first almost the same, despite some time has passed and they were further in the relationship. With the memory loss, it was too similar. But now we got both sides of the relationship, but also both sides of society.

Last but not least is the road we take in this book with our beloved couple and that we get to know the differences between Kat and Katriona Bradshaw better – we have only gotten to know Kat’s version of Katriona. As Kat has impersonated her for a long time without anyone noticing, it was inevitable we to get to know Katriona herself better as well.

All in all, this book was much better than Twice Upon A Time to my opinion. And I actually regret not buying the 4th book with the rest. I totally thought I did, until I realized I didn’t have Queen of Athelia when I was about to reach for it for my next read. So I will pick up the 1.5 novella Princess of Athelia to stick with this world in the meantime.

The domino effect has started and so after re reading the 1st two books, I am rereading the 3rd book again. This story!! Words fail me , is simply wonderful . It's remarkable how Kat and Edward get separated ,by forces out of their control, not once, not twice but THREE times!!!

Isn't it wondrous?!!!

Just when I thought that this story cannot get more heartbreaking, I am surprised by this book. This was a perfect ending for the series and I loved it like the rest of the books. I want to know more about Athelia and the author mentioned something about writing a novella . Hope it is out soon.

This whole series is really great and highly recommended by me.

Who needs to be tortured with electric chairs when they could just be made to read this?
What happened to the characters? They had personalities, stories, they were enigmas. More than the story, it was the characters that drew me in and made me come back for more. To be perfectly honest, I didn't read the book completely. I read the first third with the dedication of a fan but to listen to them whine every two sentences about how they couldn't live without each other is not romance. It's the beginning of toxicity. In the end they end up having a kid and all traces of her needing oxygen(on which the entire part 2 is hinged on) is gone solely because fairies thought it was time to intervene. How loud should my eyes roll so that the author hears me and rewrites the books from part 2?

feel the need to say this : i know aya ling got this out quickly & i thank her for it but there were definitely typos and grammatical & structural mistakes. not complaining, just pointing it out.

as for the story, well. one of the things i love most about aya's books is that they're not only romances. even though kat is completely & utterly in love with edward, there are other things that she is passionate about.

i love edward's fierce love of kat. i love that they inspire each other. i love that they make each other better people. the possessiveness i could do without, but i'll overlook it because these two make me so happy.

Sempre pronto a supportare Kat e amarla incondizionatamente.

4 stars — This final book in Kat & Edward’s trilogy definitely satisfied me, even if it felt like there was a lot going on at times.

As always, first the narrators: I’m still in love with Luci Christian. Full stop. The surprise for me was that there was a male narrator — like literal surprise, his chapter started and I actually jumped because I wasn’t expecting it. I kind of hate that he wasn’t credited anywhere, and it wasn’t until the end of the book that I learned his name — Charlie Thurston. He was pretty solid as Edward, and his accent was perfect. He was great at conveying the emotional aspects, and while I was only meh on his female voices, I find there are few male narrators that blow me away in this aspect.

I enjoyed that we got a little bit of dual POV, especially at the beginning when Edward and Kat were separated…if we hadn’t had Edward’s POV, I think the story would have been lacking. I really felt his heartbreak over losing Kat at the end of Twice Upon a Time, and his desperation to get her back.

Honestly, this book almost felt like 2 stories in one. We start with Kat getting back to Edward, which was fairly well foreshadowed by the threads not cleaned up at the end of Twice Upon a Time (Lady Gregory in particular). Part of me felt like that dragged on a bit longer than necessary, but another part of me was happy to have some of that information (especially about the Professor).

In general I was pretty satisfied with the story, though sometimes it felt like it wound around in weird ways just to make the book longer. It felt like a lot of little stories that made up one big story. There was Kat getting back, the Moran stuff, getting rid of Katriona, getting everyone to accept Kat, Bianca’s attempts at revenge, prison, Bertram & Amelie (loved that), Liam and the uprising, even a little of Poppy & Mr. Davenport and Elle and Henry. Seriously, it was a lot. I enjoyed it all, don’t get me wrong, but it made for a strange plot.

I still love Edward & Kat together, they have this epic feel to their love that you can only find in books. It was what kept me clamoring for more in this series.

I will admit, I don’t know how consistent Ms. Ling was throughout the series, nor am I convinced she created an accurate historical-ish world. But I don’t really care about those things, as I’m really only here for characters and story. I’m pretty sure there was a lot that was unrealistic, but I found I was fine with that. Something to note if you are a stickler on those points.

All in all, I thought it was a solid conclusion. It probably could have been tightened up here and there, but I was entertained. I really believe listening to good narrators helps with loving a story though.

ONE OF THE MOST INCONSISTENT SERIES I HAVE EVER READ

I'll say it. The only reason why I even finished this book was because I wanted an ending for Kat and Edward. And yes, there is another book after this one, but I am satisfied with the ending this one gave me.

Kat has been returned to the human world to recover while the real Katriona Bradshaw takes her place at Edward's side in Athelia. It seems as if this time is actually the end for Kat and Edward, luckily the goblins and the faries have banded together to make Kat's return to Athelia possible. But even with her back, Kat and Edward face many obstacles before they can be together again, including Katriona and Bianca Bradshaw, an angry mob and a new suitor for Kat.

Usually I would start a review with the good stuff, but I am having a hard time finding any, so straight into the bad stuff I go.

THE BAD STUFF

Inconsistent: There were so many things about this book that was inconsistent when compared to the previous books in this series. It seems as if Aya Ling cares nothing for consistency, she simply has no qualms inventing things, that didn't exist before and completely changing the story line as well as the story telling. For instance, the previous two books were narrated by Kat. This one is narrated by Kat and Edward, though Kat most often. Why? Yes, the two were separated at first, but that only lasted like 5 chapters and Edward's side of the story wasn't really necessary to include. Also, suddenly there is a portal between the two worlds even though it has never been mentioned before. And even though Krev told Kat, back in the first book, that she was the first person to evoke a curse by ripping the book, here there's suddenly a whole bunch of other people who has done the same thing! Really?! Stick to the story, dammit!

Convenient: This ties in a bit with the inconsistency, but there were just too many things that 'conveniently' happened. Like, one of the people who had, apparently, previously entered Athelia from the 'real world' just happened to be the foster father of Edward's mother, the Queen! And, all of a sudden, there is this spell that has never been talked about before, that can bring Kat back and make it possible for her to survive in Athelia. Sorry, but I just don't like it when all the stars magically align without anyone doing any real work for it.

I am calling time of death on this series.

2.5 stars, gaaah I feel bad for writing this.

description

Okay, first of all, I'd like to clarify that I love that Aya Ling is Taiwanese and I am currently finishing my undergrad here in Taiwan, I dunno it's just cool; she's got my full support. Wooo!
Anyway, now that that's out of the way, I will proceed with my review. I wanted this to be a spoiler review but like...I'm not feeling it ya know? Maybe cuz it's 1am currently and I'm lazy.

description

Funny you should say that Mimi, cuz that's what I was thinking about this book. Lots of lazy writing it felt like, or a rushed deadline, I dunno. It really pains me to write this but there were so many inconsistencies here as well, within the same book! (as was with the second one). By now you've probably read about the inconsistencies in other reviews so I will not delve into that but man, why? just why? is it really that hard for authors to read their previous books?

description

Look, the story, the idea, it was okay, but I couldn't help but wonder why the author would write some scenes that would elicit excitement and then just rush through them like... heello! I wanted moreee! Especially with a specific scene at the end of the book, it just felt so rushed :(
Also Edward...I don't know, he changed, he's more possessive and angry. Okay look, possessive, I guess I "get" it because he is afraid of losing Kat, but his anger? how he treats people in this book seemed very...I don't know, uncharacteristic of him; it paints him in a negative light for me.
Honestly, I kept on thinking of an alternate way the story could've gone but I guess she kinda did it in the end? ish?
description

Also, how some plots were resolved out of the blue, like...nooooo, no NO nO No! you made me be anxious for this, this thing, and then you just poof make it go away in a SMALL PARAGRAPH?! WHAT! Look friends, I don't curse, I really don't, not even inside my head if I can help it. There's a specific scene however, that I was like...f...this cannot be happening!!! nnooooo. Too many plot conveniences for me to believe it, I know it's a fantasy novel and whatnot but...come on...just, come on. *scoffs indignantly*
description

Anyhow the rest of my complains are just about sentence structure and grammatical errors so blaah.

Overall, I care too much about this story and their characters to actually hate on it. Good job Aya Ling on getting published! Lol

Now that is an ending, thank you very much!
I enjoyed this series a lot. I like Kat and Edward, no matter how overly perfect they are. Especially Edward. But that's also what I really liked about these books. There weren't the usual misunderstandings and problems, ladies that could create problems between a loving couple because said couple simply doesn't communicate with each other. This couple did talk, didn't keep any secrets from each other (mostly) and they completely trusted and built on each other. What a relationship! I would have loved to see them argue at least at one point of the series, because I feel like their relationship was a bit too much of a fairy tale, but in the end that's what these books were: a fairy tale.

I enjoyed every bit of it. I hope to finish the last bit of the story soon, so that I am finally freed from the world of Athelia and come back to the real world, because I am pretty sure my friends and family are missing me as well. And just like Kat, I won't be able to forget Edward when I return. <3
Like I did with the first two parts, I do recommend to read this if you want to read a cute love story with a hot guy and a nice girl, maybe even look for something like a guilty-pleasure.

Fun and cute! However, I feel like Ling was trying to have Katherine accomplish too much. Like, I would have rather had 1 major plot line with a couple strong sub-plots than 4-5 plot lines of equal importance. Kay is a strong character, but she felt a little ... waifish (?) in this book because she was trying to do too much. While everything wrapped up nicely in the end, it all felt a little rushed. But with that said, I'm glad there was a third book, and I did enjoy it! I love the world of Athelia, and I super hope Ling writes a little novella in the future so we can see where everyone ends up!

Ps: Aya! You use the "R" word towards the end, and that was rather jarring. Maybe change that one? I know young girls are reading your novels, and it just isn't a nice word to use. 💜

I am being very generous by giving this book 3 stars. The first 40% was good but after that the storyline was dragging. And it kept getting less and less interesting, because of the extra unnecessary fillers.

The first book was the best book ever, it was very funny and romantic and cute. That said this one didn’t even live up to its prequels. I did enjoy few parts, and had few laughs. It is still worth reading in a sense to come to Kat and Edward’s story conclusion. But nit something I would keep rereading multiple times like I did with The Ugly Stepsister.

One thing that would stay with me though, Kat and Edward are definitely one of my favorite couples. And I will always love them.

I was super looking forward to this book but only made it 50% before putting it down...then tried to finish a few days later and only made it to 58% before I couldn't bring myself to read more. I lost a lot of interest in Kat and the overall story line. The story was predictable, not a lot of action, and just seemed to drag. Overall very disappointing.
