The Lady On The Rooftops

Rate this book
Angus Gregory is fourteen years old when he moves to Fairhope, Wisconsin with his family. The first thing to strike him, when he moves to the small town, are the Missing posters of the boy from the College. The second thing is the lady on the rooftops.
Only Angus can see her - but she's there- dressed in a black cloak, her eyes focused straight ahead as she walks hurriedly across the rooftops of the buildings downtown.
Angus thinks he might go mad, holding this secret, knowing that she's there but realizing that no one else can see her. But then one day, when he's on a camping trip with some boys from his school, as they sit around the campfire telling ghost stories, another boy reveals that he's also been seeing the lady on the rooftops.
Together, the two of them team up to find out who she was, why she's there and what she's so desperately searching for as she rises up from her plot - crosses the graveyard and walks back and forth across the downtown buildings before coming back to her resting place and falling headfirst, back into the ground.

I can see this as a series and as a movie.

An excellent Young Adult horror/thriller story.

14 year old Angus Gregory moves to a new town with his parents and teenage sister. Shortly thereafter, he begins seeing a strange, incorporeal woman in the local graveyard and staring down from the tops of buildings.

That's troubling enough for a young man in a new town, but as the story progresses we come to learn that he is far from the only person to witness strange happenings in Fairhope, Wisconsin.

The narration was superb and the storyline was compelling.

I only wish that more of the mysteries had been solved or explained. I'm hoping that will happen in future books.

Recommended for those who like tales of ghosts and mysterious happenings.

The Lady on the Rooftops was an excellent mystery novel that I think would be exceptional for teens. Angus is a fourteen year old boy who moves to a new town, a small town in Wisconsin where everything is suppose to be calm and laid back, but the town hides secrets. One night Angus is cutting through a graveyard and witnesses a ghost rise from a grave. He follows this witch-like creature into town where she glides across rooftops and streets. He's so scared he tells no one until a camping trip with other teens reveals lots of spooky things are going on in this town. It seems only he and his family hear these sonic booms going off. His sister also sees the ghost one night and they try to investigate who she might be, but come up empty handed. It isn't until his mother witnesses something one night that others begin to believe Angus is seeing ghosts. This leads to a life altering change in Angus' life. I gave it five stars because it was a real sweet mystery.

What a fabulous Halloween book! The protagonist, Angus, has an incredibly strong voice and personality. Why else would he decide to go to a graveyard to get to know the new town his dad has brought the family to? (And don't YOU remember doing that? Visiting a graveyard?) The author doesn't wait for the graveyard to set the tone of this scary (and believable) book; she set it with the posters of young men murdered by the town serial killer.

He sees something at the graveyard he wishes he hadn't. People who see the paranormal usually wish they didn't have that gift. Lucky for him, another boy (Andy) has the same gift. As two boys on the threshhold of adulthood, they meet for coffee at a restaurant to discuss what they have seen.

The whole family seems to do well in the new town (so different from Birmingham, which they came from). Angus's mother gets beautiful cold weather beds and blankets for the house, which is a lot more spacious than their little apartment back in Alabama. The teens make friends (except for Easton, the tiny little brother who is not in school yet) and they all have adventures.

Except the creepiest adventures have to do with seeing things, and after a very short time, it is not just Angus and Andy who can claim the right. It is hard to believe that a town in which one can make so many friends can be so dangerous; perhaps the longer one lives there--like Mrs. Clive--the greater risk people run.

That's what the family has to come to a decision about, in the final analysis. The question is, do paranormal dangers exist in greater quantities in small rural towns, or are they present in busy cities?

I found this book after reading Cheeking My Meds by Francis Coco. This is a new talent to watch. I have not been disappointed yet--quite the contrary! She knows how to hold her reader.

I loved to read books by lesser-known authors. Francis Coco is becoming a favorite. This book is an absolute delight--so creepy and so creative! The truth is that some people can see what others cannot see--the other side, beings of the paranormal. Angus sees a lady on the rooftops and honestly, I was hooked by this story. Angus is lucky to meet someone else who can see the other side. I have personally known two people who had that gift, so I believe in it. I loved the way Angus's sister reacted, and her solution. This is a children's story that adults who love the paranormal will immensely enjoy.

I am such a big fan of creepy paranormal books and this one is a huge winner. You get a sense of something not being right at the outset, when Angus (the protagonist) talks about the posters showing the missing college kid, and then he sees the witch, the lady on the rooftops. As a fan of the mysteries behind the paranormal, I can attest that people who see what others can't really don't like to talk about it. They are treated like crazies. It is such a relief for Angus when he realizes he is not the only one! This book gripped me right up until the end and I love the spunk of Angus's sister.

Now that Halloween is approaching, I am thinking about what books best catch the ambiance. Here is a secret treasure that is full of Halloween creepiness. What some people see when they look out the window. . . very, very true, for those who have the experience. You won't regret reading this gem. Wonderful for believers in God. Love that female protagonist!!

Having read Cheeking My Meds, I wanted to see what else there was out there by this author. Francis Coco knows how to pace a story--and this one, although it is primarily about children, will hold the adult reader with the strange paranormal happenings and the protagonists' reactions. Coco held my attention on every page. Amazing! I loved the ending!

Why isn't this book well known? What a great horror novel for a large age range, say 13 years old to adult. There are entities not everyone sees. Why are children more likely to be able? A mystery that goes back to the dawn of mankind. I think the voice of the narrator is compelling and the pages kept turning.
