Styx Trilogy #2

Outcast Shadows

Rate this book
Airships, experiments, immortal beasts—a maid’s work is never done!

After being betrayed by a goblin they thought was an ally, Bostwick and Emmaline must help Queen Delilah collect pieces of the map of Styx, which lie scattered across the globe. Aided by a flying machine, they encounter corrupt dictators, clumsy goat girls, immortal beasts, and—most frightening of all—a love potion gone horribly wrong.

Meanwhile, Millicent finds herself in the mysterious, black-and-white city of Chiaroscuro. Sebastian reveals that the city is in danger, and he needs her to cast a spell from her old magic books—a spell which she alone knows. But who wrote those books in the first place, and what do they have to do with Chiaroscuro? To explain, Sebastian shows Millicent visions of life at Melieh’s Academy of Magic hundreds of years ago. As she learns more about the school, Sebastian’s past, and the truth behind the test that barred her from the Academy, she must make a choice that could mean life or death.

This book was a perfect read for me. First of all, it's so funny. The goblins do have a tradition of being as whimsical and havoc-wreaking as you can get, which makes for some great moments in the book, but even the human or more serious characters have a special sort of quirkiness about them. They are also very likable: they melted my heart and made me giggle at the same time.

Outcast Shadows was also very refreshing. It's a simple story, but everything about it was well written. The plot turned into an exciting magical adventure, the world and characters are delightful, it has a sweet and positive attitude, and the plot twists are surprising. It doesn't need anything else to charm you. It's hard to find stories like this, so I have nothing to complain about it.

There are nice metaphors about tea, too.

Fun continuation of Miscast Spells. Hw often do you get a sequel with the name in tradition with the first? This book goes at once darker with one part of the plat and more delightfully silly with another part. I DO love Goblins!

I received a digital copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I have so many books to review but I still went ahead and picked up Outcast Spells because of how much I loved Miscast Spells .

This book is a continuation of Emmaline, Delilah, Millicent and Bostwick’s story after a cat-turned-goblin scatters Delilah’s Kingdom all over the realm and kindnap’s Millicent. Emmaline, Bostwick and Delilah set out on a journey to find Millicent and piece back together the pieces of the map that will return Styx (Delilah’s kingdom) back to it’s right place.

I loved Rose Corcoran’s writing in the first book and the second book was no different. Her writing has this easy flow that keeps you hooked and takes you on a bumpy free ride. It’s also well played out and she also manages to add exceptional depth to her characters and plot.

Two pages in and I realized how much I missed Delilah. She has an exceptional sense of humor, has a knack for trouble and mischief and is just so lively. This Goblin queen is an amazing character that I’ve come to highly like. And even though I think of similar of other characters, Delilah is my favorite.

Although it was funny and I highly enjoyed it, it lacked the ‘spunk’ and the lighthearted humor of its prequel that had me snorting all throughout the book. It is pretty funny just less quirky than I expected.

I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a quick, funny, full of mischief, magic and mayhem fantasy adventure story.
