How will Demon, official Beast Keeper of Mount Olympus, heal a herd of sick unicorns before it's too late?
Demon has just returned from a trip to Asgard when a brand-new set of disasters fall into his lap. Not only does he have a groggy volcano monster to deal with, but something seems to be wrong with the unicorns, too. Demon's only clue is a mysterious note saying "Unicorn Emergency!" left on his bed. What does it mean? And how will Demon figure out the problem and fix it before time runs out?
In 2015 I have 6 upcoming titles, 4 books in the brand-new Beasts of Olympus series from Piccadilly Press (Grosset and Dunlap/Penguin Young Readers in the USA), an early reader called The Little Green Drum from Orion and my first proper YA novel, Cleo, from Orchard. Cleo is a mixture of historical and paranormal, and follows the teenage Cleopatra on her journey to become pharaoh. I'm very excited about it indeed!
I was born in a small village in Hampshire, England. I loved reading from an early age, and was never found without some kind of book in my hand from the time I could turn and page and make sense of what was written there. My first job was as an editor of children's books, but I soon jumped the fence and started writing my own. My first picture book was published in 1992, and now I write for all ages (two to teen). Atticus the Storyteller's 100 Greek Myths was shortlisted for the BBC Blue Peter Book Award in 2004. It is the most comprehensive collection of Greek myths ever written for children. My first novel, Hootcat Hill which was described as “A lyrical fantasy full of old, dark magic entertainingly bound up with ordinary life.” by the Sunday Times.
The book I would take to a desert island is The Lord of the Rings. I've lost count of how many times I've read it, and I am still finding new things to marvel at in it.
This one was much shallower than the others. The beginning with the volcano was easily resolved (did Hephaestus ever figure out what caused it?) and then you immediately have the hounds and unicorns, also easily resolved.
Artemis is one of the worst of the Olympians, which is a shame because she is one of my favorites usually. But she’s completely irrational and mean to Demon. The whole thing with the unicorns was kind of stupid - for some reason the pomegranates are irresistible, but they are killing the unicorns...and no one noticed that a grove of trees appeared right before the herd got sick? Not to mention the red around their mouths? What is this nonsense? Why would they even want pomegranates if they eat star and moonlight?

Demon returns to Olympus after curing Goldbristle in Asgard, Demon must return to Olympus. But, there’s always some crisis occurring.
Typhon had awaken and is trying to escape. And after saving the world, Demon returns to his stable with a note on his bed about some unicorn emergency. However, Demon soon finds out that Artemis had a play in the note.
For the first time, Demon’s dad sticks up for Demon and the treatment he has to endure from the Olympian gods and goddesses.
Artemis is in need of Demon’s help to save the dying unicorns. Since unicorns don’t like males, Demon must be disguised as a girl. While analyzing the unicorns, Demon finds out that the ruler of the Underworld and his wife have a play with the declining health of the unicorns.
Artemis is definitely not my favorite goddesses; as a matter of fact, the gods and goddesses should be appreciative of Demon for caring for the beasts - they truly take Demon for granted and treat me unfairly (like a low life servant).
Don’t fear, there’s a happy ending and this is the end of the series.
Book 8 opens with Demon experiencing a hangover. While I agree this fits in well with Valhalla and the gods, IMO it isn't appropriate for the book's intended age group.
Past the hangover part, this book was a great mix of mythology and comedy. I read this with one of my 9 yo boys and we both enjoyed it. My son loved the farting dragons and unicorns that hate boys. We'll be picking up more in this series.
