An enjoyable novela.
Set in the small fishing town of Larache, Morocco we are told the story of Doña María and el Capitán. They are the patriarchs of this family who came to Morocco from Spain in the 1930’s. He would oversee the fishing fleet while she would raise their family.
Cristina Martínez Martín, a GR author narrates the ups and downs of this family. They left the civil war and dictatorship of Spain and witness the social and political changes of Morocco. Caught up in the issues religion between Muslim, Christians and Jews they seem to navigate this best as they can.
At the core is Doña María, the backbone of the family who contends with her womanizer, autocratic husband. She is the one who tries to get things done no matter how hard things get while dealing her own personal demons. The ending was a pleasant surprise.
I admit I often wanted a little more story line. The story itself was good, it kept my interest but seemed to skim the surface at times.
Overall there was a simplicity that moved along. I liked that.

Acabo de atreverme a publicarla de nuevo pese a que, cuando desapareció, estaba ya en su segunda edición: “Te devuelvo la memoria”. Esa primera novela que escribí y con la que gané el certamen de narrativa Princesa Galiana organizado por el Ayuntamiento de Toledo… Ha pasado mucho tiempo desde entonces. Muchos sabéis cuánto sufrí por el acoso de mi familia, que de alguna forma se veía reflejada en la novela y me hizo la vida imposible. Y lo peor fue que me quitó las ganas de volver a publicar… Quiero dar las gracias a todas aquellas personas que la leísteis y me animasteis a continuar. ¡Gracias, muchas gracias! Sin vuestro apoyo no habría sido capaz de volver a hacerlo. Me emocionan vuestros comentarios, me halagan vuestras reseñas, y me ayudan a crecer como escritora vuestras críticas.
