A Fight to the End…

The Confederation and the Union have fought each other to a standstill. Battered, exhausted fleets eye each other warily across a border that has been a battlefield for three bloody years. Neither side has the strength to attack, and both wait for reinforcements that will allow them to resume the fight.

On the worlds of the Iron Belt, the heavily industrialized sector near the Confederation’s Core, massive shipyards operate around the clock, producing the great vessels that can end the war. The Union knows it cannot win the economic struggle with its wealthier, more productive enemy, and Sector Nine, its feared spy agency, is not idle. Their focus is not on the front lines, the ravaged border between the two nations, but far off, beyond the Rim, in the strange, militaristic realm know as the Alliance.

Sector Nine’s intrigues are targeted at nothing less than instigating a coup, and bringing to power a regime that favors war against the Confederation, a change in government that will bring the fresh fleets of the Alliance into the war, striking at the Confederation’s unguarded flank.

Once again, Captain Tyler Barron and his battleship Dauntless must go back to the Rim, and on to the Alliance itself to somehow thwart the Union’s plan…and prevent a two-front war the Confederation cannot win.

Not excitingI

I was hoping that the writer would hit his stride but it's the same weak storytelling that a lot of this genre 's writers fall back on. Flat characters, with human moments which are then reduced to a comfortable cliche. The story could be lifted from any World War2 movie about the plucky U.S. fighter pilot (preferably Marine, better still featuring John Wayne).

It's a sad universe with mankind having lost thousands of years of art, philosophy, history and culture and being reduced to a struggle between Stalinist styled-French revolution gone wrong empire vs a simplistic plutocratic U.S. style "democracy". All trace of non English or French surnames are even lost.

It's bad enough that it might be fun.

What a ride

Captain and and his crew once again have been asked to place themselves and their ship in the path of danger. Having just completed a major refit and shore leave, they will have to be at their best. Trouble is ahead, civil war has broken out in the Alliance, with the union forcing pulling the strings. The next book will be what I think give us the battle of all battles. Looking forward to it.

Much better than book 3, but still not as good as book 2.

This is a nice little bounce back from book 3. There were still some issues: I was at 29% completed when I finally felt like the story was moving and not just table setting. That's too slow a start. The characters still say no matter what and whatever it takes too often. And, there were some plot points that could have been given more room to breath (Raptor's PTSD, Barron's issue, Captain Travis, etc could all have used a bit more fleshing out between issue and resolution). After the slow start it was like a sprint down the back half.

As entertaining as the battles can be, and they are, they can still be undermined by a lack of any real technical or tactical knowledge. Where the fuck is the left side in space? Just give us some flux capacitor bs like navigation points. "Proceed to heading 23z-50spacebabble" sounds a lot better than "Where do you want me?" "On the left".

Then there is my other favorite oft repeated phrase, "It didn't make sense, and violated every rule save one unwritten one, it was unexpected". I'm paraphrasing, but there is a lot of "this shouldn't work but he does it anyway" in these books. It's like the author knows something is dumb and hopes that by acknowledging that he knows its dumb you'll let him get away with it anyway. It hasn't quite reached the "No matter the cost" meme level, but it's still annoying.

The books are still entertaining and despite being pretty predictable most of the time there are enough bread crumbs that the resolutions don't quite feel like the Deus Ex Machina they are.

TLDR: I still ride with gritty Star Trek, but some of it's authors tendencies are annoying.

Well I've you've read to book #4 then there's not much to spoil, though there are a few gripes I have with this book and story so far.

The contents of this book wouldn't have come as much surprise to most, I would think. Considering that The Alliance were basically missing from Book #3, it was plain to see that the Union influence would push them to centre-stage on this one. Lille is playing his shadowy villain part well, with the main Union-Confed war being at a stalemate at the moment. The ending of this book does setup nicely for the third.

Here are my personal gripes:

- A lot of words/reading time is taken up with superfluous, repetitive info, eg. almost every time Fritz or Atara are mentioned the usual few lines are inserted about their skill and reliability. The same with the Confed primary guns which are always mentioned to be temperamental. We're into book #4, all readers would know this off hand already.
- The whole Dauntless vs the world is becoming a bit of a cliche, the battles mostly following a similar path: Dauntless launching fighters but some enemy bombers get through, she takes damage and loses crew. Except the main characters, the crew are just numbers.
- Perhaps this is covered in the next books, but I would like more information about each faction : Why are the Alliance basically the Roman Empire in space, the Confeds are the USA and the Union are a sort of Communist regime. How'd they become like that?

I'm committed to finishing the series, I've come this far. Lets see how it all goes.

Excellent Read, Can Not Wait For Next Chapter

Jay Allan is one of the most prolific and adept Space Opera authors available today. This novel, building on the previous story, once again revolves around the adventures (or misadventures) of loyal Confederation officer Barron, captain of the battleship Dauntless. The Confederation, with it's relative social freedom (compared to the other two nations slowly recovering civilization in the wreckage of the Empire) still faces the forces of the dictatorial Union and has an uneasy border with the neo-Roman warrior culture of the Alliance.

In the first book of the series, Barron faced the singular giant Alliance battleship "Invictus", probing and invading the borderland systems of the Confederation. In this book, Barron is sent in a rebuilt, more powerful, "Dauntless " to deal with a rumored civil war in the Alliance. Rumours reach Confederation headquarters of a split between Alliance officers, with the sabotage and lucre of the Union being invested into a treasonous cabal to bribe the Alliance into entering the war between the Union and the Confederation.

Space battle follows space battle, inevitably drawing me into the story, and I was unable to put this book down .

This installment of the Blood on the Stars series seemed to suffer more than its predecessors from hit-or-miss editing/proofreading. At times the author seemed to lose track of which of the three opposing groups (Alliance, Confederation, Union) a character represented. In one instance, referring to the event in a previous book in which the Alliance sent a warship into Confederation space to test their defenses (and wound up destroyed after a hard battle), the head of the Alliance military muses that he regretted the decision to invade the Alliance ... he meant the Confederation, of course. In another, he calls the Union spy, sent to the Alliance to foment rebellion, an Alliance spy. There are many little slips like this which, along with grammatical errors, momentarily take the reader out of the fictional world and interrupt the experience.

The battle scenes, while central to the military science fiction genre, have become very repetitive. Having completed the fourth book in the series, I'm not even halfway through and find myself tiring of the whole thing. I may take a break and read another author for a while before deciding whether to return to finish this series.

Jay Allan is a fantastic writer. His stories are incredibly gripping, incredibly action-packed, and incredibly understated. You feel the emotion from the characters and relate to it, not get told about it. His situations are plausible and realistic given the futuristic settings, and you start to develop a real caring for his characters. I find that even though his books are largely can't put them down drinks from a fire hose, I am always wanting more and always ready to move onto the next one.
I particularly love the Blood on the Staries series with Tyler Barron and the crew of the Dauntless. Echoes of Glory was very satisfying indeed. I'm ready for the next one! And the next, and the next. Too bad I have other books I've committed to read first. But I'll probably start Cauldron anyway and just sneak in reads during lunch breaks! We're just not worthy of your awesomeness, Jay! Thanks for another great book! Highly, highly recommended!

Top Notch World Building and Action

This is good old fashioned military space opera. The strength of this series is in it’s universe building. 3 distinct societies (so far). One that mimics a communist/socialist society, one a Roman-style imperial caste society, and one a representative republic. Their clashes and battles are interesting and exciting. The downside of the series is the constant fluff...like: “we have the best damn ship in the fleet, the best damn captain, the best damn doctor, the best damn first officer, the best damn pilots, the best damn squadrons” (probably the best damn toilets, too). AND...”they’re all damn good friends” (and the toilets, I’m sure). It just gets a little much after awhile. You expect some fluff in a series as straightforward as this but I wish the author would tone it down, a bit. It takes away from the authenticity of a real world comparison.

Before you pick this one up to read, please note it is book #4 of a series: you need to have read the first three books of the series first or this one won’t make much sense to you.

Without having a spoiler, the author picks up right where he left off in the continuing war but from a different aspect with developing characters from the Alliance perspective: the author continues to paint the picture as if you are right there in the middle of things. What I like most about this series is you really feel as if you know the characters, and feel the raw emotion of the costs of war as you lose friends and loved ones. I’m ready for the next book in the series.

The Kindle version of this title is $2.99 – if you enjoyed the other books in the series, you will certainly receive more than $2.99 worth of entertainment value out of this one.

Captain Tyler Barron commanding the Dauntless returns to Alliance territory

Captain Barron and the wonderfully familiar crew of the Confederation battleship Dauntless have been ordered back to Alliance space, this time to help fight with them against the Union sponsored coup.

Jay's usual excellently written action and combat sequences are fully realistic. The deep and richly detailed characters drive the storyline. You share their bravery and fear, their love and their disdain. You applaud their bravery and boo their weaknesses. Mostly, you know them. They're your best friends, your worst enemies, an old girlfriend, a neighbor and the bagger at Kroger.

This is a terrific story from the master of interstellar combat writing. You'll enjoy it! I guarantee it!

The best of the ´Blood on the Stars’ series... so far!

I knew from the very first chapters of this book that I was reading a 5 stars epic addition to the ´Blood on the Stars’ series.

For me, the strongest suit of Jay Allan is his ability to zoom in on the mindset of a civilization, shedding an empathetic light on its citizens and their motivations for good and/or evil. The author even outdid himself this time. The actors that populate this story are fully 3 dimensional, a rather rare occurence in the profusion os sci-fi stories these days. I enjoyed this book immensely. Note that I did not even mention the outstanding martial bouts our heroes had to overcome in this episode.

* * * * * 5 stars.
Kudos to the author.

A solid 4\5

After deviating to other parts of the universe this book returns to the story arc of book one, much anticipated and appreciated. The alliance and confederation become unlikely and necessary allies. A couple of reviewers noted correctly that the amount of time spent developing depth in so many characters needed a much longer book. I have been applauding the author spending more time in character depth and development so I won't complain too loudly. Finally, as noted by other reviewers there was just too much good luck in resolving plot conflicts. Special kudos for the price, wish other authors would take note...a steal.

Powerful space drama...they just keep getting better

In volume four, the action shifts back to the Alliance--where it all began back in volume one. Except this time, the Alliance is at war with itself, and the Confederacy has to decide whether to intervene...even though it has little to offer.

After a slow start setting up all too obvious political background, we begin a roller coaster ride of non-stop action, with constant fighting and tension...while also learning a little more about the Alliance background.

The only bad part: this turns out NOT to be the final volume, and the next volume isn't written yet!

Star Trek was repetitive and one of the best space opera's of all time

I get that I am a little behind others in reading this series. I get it when some say its repetitive. So was Star Trek, Babylon 5 and Star Wars. It is but character development is derived from stories. What's next? Why Commodore Barron and Dauntless fight again, develop relationships, sleep with beautiful women, (apparently there ain't no ugly ones in space), and do it again foraging into the future.. Well I'm glad and ready for the next.

The war has stalled for now, but the dastardly Union has deployed another secret weapon. It is their top operative armed with an obscene amount of money. What is he going to do with it? Well you will have to read the book to find out. Just for a change its one bad guy and his cheque book against fleet of good guys.

I enjoyed this one the most so far, there was a lot going on and Jay Allan feeds it to you in easily digestible bites.

This one is missed

The story is fairly interesting. Yet, I couldn’t get past the repetitiveness on certain topics. Where readers should already know by now with the fourth book in the series. And Stockton thing is so terrible. The author should either say nothing or remove him out completely. Back to the story, the coup plot and temporary alliance are cool but seem like the story is already set. That’s how I feeling about it. There’s no twist or negative consequence...it just a weird white knight syndrome thing.

Three and a half stars. It is nice to seethe story arc coming together. This story has a little drama mixed in with some good character development. I still have a hard time with battleship on battleship tactics, it just seems implausible to me that a every military would develop the same top heavy doctrine. I don't want to spoil anything, but Andi's amazing feat of tracking down Barron's ship turns out not to be so amazing after all. Good but not great.

Allan again exceeds expectations with the latest Blood on the stars series. Good character development, a great universe and non stop action lead you through the continuation of Blood on the Stars fourth novel Echos of Glory. Great good guys, Bad guys you will love to hate and the awakening of a closed culture to a different perspective on other societies all mixed to bring you onward in the saga. Waiting anxiously for the next book in the series due in the Fall of 2017.

In his fourth book, author Jay Allen has Travis Barron once again assigned to the star system from which he, and his ship Dauntless barely survived their battle with the Alliance. Only now, upon his arrival, to find a representative from the Alliance requesting his help! How he responds, and oh yeah, the fact that there is an assassin on board trying to kill him, will keep the reader on one roller coaster of a ride! Excellent read!

Action and battle packed adventure continue. Some side characters get a larger part. Character development continues more for some characters than others, but that's just the way it should be. New twists in the story line with a broader universe development. Read the other books first as this series needs to be read in order. This series can get your mind off your other stresses in life that are not fixed by the end of the book or series.

Well, the plot thickens. The series opened with the Union trying to get a third party involved, the alliance. They are at it again, this time spending hard money to ferment a coup against the rulers of the Alliance to get the Alliance involved, Some in the Alliance hold out, and now it is a civil war, and the Confederacy sends help, to try and prevent a two front war. Good stuff!

Snap up a copy and start reading...but he prepared to have some sleepless nights you won't be able to put it down. But it is time we'll spent. Enjoy.

Get ready to fire the primaries again, this one is intense.

Despite the longer lead-in for another arc of the Blood on the Stars series, this book adds well to the legend of Tylor Barron and his crew. For best effect it is recommended you read all the prior Blood on the Stars books first.

Glory abounds

Jay Allan has kept this story going with enemies becoming allies and friends becoming enemies. Cultures may be different but the will to survive, is to recognize change. Characters continue to hold true. In battle there is death and this is about battles-war-treason.

The Union has subverted the Alliance command structure - war against the Confederation is guaranteed. Or is it? A small band of loyalist forces have escaped and established a base. The Confederate battleship Dauntless, commanded by Captain Tyler Barron is sent to assist their defence - he has been given full power to make any and all decisions.
It's not long before overwhelming enemy forces appear and battle commences - it fact it continues more or less unabated for the rest of the book - unfortunately Tyler is poisoned and taken out of the game for a period.
I have noted a couple of times in previous reviews that Jay Allan does not handle characterisation well, that his characters have the depth of a tissue, this time he uses the heat of battle paired with the 'dying' Tyler to wring a goodly amount of emotion out of the setting. Of course, there being a battle, there isn't much time to dwell on emotion, probably just as well!
There are few better space battle writers than Jay Allan.

It HAD to be.

I was as 20 pages into the trilogy of the 1st three books when I realized I had read them all, before. However, it was good reading so I continued. It was just as good the second time around. Book 4, "Echos of Glory" was also highly enjoyable. If a 4 is plain 'good' then a 5 is very good. I look forward to the next in the series.

Another kick ass battle!

What a great continuation of the series. Once again and with the odds against them the Dauntless has pulled through. I can't wait to see where the story goes from here.

Another adventure with the Barron gang.

Almost as good as it's predecessors from this master of the space opera. BUT the long chapters of exposition in th first 20% or so of the book really gravesite down for me.
Still Allan and Campbell keep the fun going.

Best written book so far on the series

Book has intrigue, action and romance. The action sequences are solid and entertaining. Allan still over does the character development, if you do not get it the first time, you probably will somewhere in the next tern.
