Talia is a mysterious woman with a complicated past. She is a fighter who keeps her thoughts and feelings well guarded. While fulfilling her destiny, she meets Hark--a man whom she is inexplicably drawn to. Little does she know, her life will play out before his eyes during the very moment he intends to destroy her. Hark develops a deeper understanding of Talia's past as her secrets are revealed to him. Will Hark choose his feelings over the fate of the world, or is it much too late?
In this post-technological age, supernatural powers emerge within the gifted "feylins," leaving the mundane antiquated. Reflections is a story of love, loss and sacrifice.
I received this via Goodreads Giveaways in exchange for an honest review. All my opinions are my own.:) --- great idea but just couldn't get into it... my experience only, you may like it better than me *shrugs* go for it if it sounds interesting to you:)
"... You'll remember this exact conversation, word for word." "Will I?" "Every detail." "So, you're saying I'll remember how this moonlight accentuates the tiniest hairs on your face, creating a beautiful glow?" he said, caught in the moment. My chin quivered. "Yes, forever," I barely got the words out... We were the only two beings holding on to this fraction of time, while the rest of the world moved on. It's all I ever wanted...to be worth remembering.
The books opens to a suspenseful scene where the narrator is in a state of complete disorientation, and the reader is carried along. We're quickly introduced to a supernatural realm, the Feylin realm. It is here that the narrator, Hark, is in a state of both determination and turmoil. To psychically end someone's life, while at the same time feeling every moment of her life. The story proceeds in a very different way than expected. Talia’s life and the circumstances leading up to this event are depicted through the eyes of Hark.
There are some POV challenges that I could overcome because I was very taken away by the writing. Part of that is because we've really got two MCs who are intertwined from perspectives. Prologue and Epilogue are from Hark's POV. The remainder is Hark seeing and feeling everything through Talia's eyes ... even his own interactions with her. A supernatural YA filled with imagination and truly beautiful writing style. Though I haven't been in the YA reads for some time, (not about to toss my age about), I enjoyed the journey. The author is extremely vivid in depicting scenes and emotions. I'd almost venture to say gifted. Fingers crossed that someday the author heads in the contemporary romance category ... now THAT would be an amazing book indeed.
I feel like if you enjoyed 'A Wrinkle In Time' (which was probably my first love in the supernatural/sci-fi realm), this might be a book you'd enjoy.
This review is part of my continuing effort to read and review indie authors, and this was a Twitter find.
I loved this book the moment I started. It sucked me right into the world, with really well detailed descriptions and just a lot of cool ideas. The author is incredibly imaginative. The book had an overall feeling of a D&D game as I read it. It was a lot of fun and just so colorful. There were a few parts I got turned around, but that was mainly due to the fact that I get thrown easily when there are a lot of characters and names to remember. 😆 Otherwise I highly recommend it!
I quite enjoyed this book. The world and peoples with their feylin capabilities were new to me. A refreshing new tale.
This is a book you need to listen to without too many distractions. Often the narrative switches between Talia, Hark and the Prophetess but is said in the first person- "I". Often I had to rewind to figure out who "I" was, and then "the doll" too. Especially since the voices for them are not too different. Also, the storyline switches quite quickly (hence paying attention to the book), one moment they are in one place doing one thing, and the next you're rewinding the book thinking "how did they get here? The book starts with an event that parallels the end of the book. Then we meet Hark and Talia. She is a recruiter for the Feylin Order and recruits Hark. Not long after we learn Talia is not whom she initially seems, she has many secrets and a complicated personality. She is to embark on a quest and Hark is to join her. and there is plenty of strife, drama and trials they need to overcome.
The narrator (Crystal Wikoff) did a good job reading this book. My only criticism is the characters voices were very similar and everyone often spoke in a 'happy' tone which did not seem appropriate in all situations. Despite this, it was still pleasant listening to Crystal narrate. I would listen to another book narrated by her.
I would happily listen to/read another book by this author.
There is not any explicit sex or swearing. For the overly squeamish, there are a few scenes you'll probably want to gloss over, yet, they are not too gory.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and voluntarily left this unbiased review. Story 4/5 Narration 3/5
Review originally posted at https://tinyurl.com/y9w6m4g7. Talia is The Plague and it has been her destiny since her birth to sacrifice herself for the betterment of all Feylin. She has never questioned this or felt anything for it. Instead, she has devoted her time towards helping her faction. She enjoys the pain and suffering she causes. At least she did, before she gained an Order.
The Order Talia gained was that of the prophetess, Capri. Capri is soft, beautiful, sheltered, loved, and everything Talia is not. Where Talia brings suffering, Capri brings hope. With Capri within Talia they are both changed, along with their destinies. The biggest turning point after gaining Capri's order is something that appeared so simple. She met Hark during recruitment. Suddenly she had something worth living for. Yet, he hates Talia and cares for Capri. Not only that, but their destinies must still be fulfilled and someone must save the Feylin from themselves. Are Talia and Hark up for the task? Will those they meet on the way help them or be their undoing? Or, maybe, they'll just run away together. After all, what is destiny if it can't be altered?
This book was definitely an interesting concept and I enjoyed every minute of it. I adored Talia, Capri, and Hark. I understood their feelings and couldn't wait to know how their stories unfolded. We knew the end was coming, we just didn't know when or how. That made it all the more fun. That being said the end was unexpected and I hope with everything in me that the right decision was made and that there is a book two in the future.
I loved this book. It was different and I loved it. I haven't read another book like it. My emotions got roped in and I could even understand what the characters were feeling. The characters have real emotions and mimic most of us in the way we have to overcome who we are and who we want to be, our love for another and our anger and destructive side but both are us. The characters have good development. The story carries on at a good pace. Sometimes the villans are not who we thought they were. To me a good example of good vs evil but who decides what is evil and what is good? The combat/fighting is well written and I could not put the book down because I didn't want to miss what what next. Some plot twists, some adventure, some choices to be made. I do not want to wait for the next one... Please tell me there will be!
I have to admit that I have not yet been able to get into this book. I plan to try again in the near future on a plane trip when I can put more into it. I got about 30 pages read and realized that in spite of going back and forth, I really had no idea what was happening to who.
Loved this book! Such an arc of creativity flows through this novel. From the first page to the last, it is fast-paced and engaging. The detailed writing allowed me to enter into this world of the author's imagining. Would recommend this book to anyone.
I will start out by saying that I was provided an audio book copy of this book through Audioboom and thank them and the author kindly for the opportunity to read this book.
I feel like the voice actor was well selected for the book, but please listen to the voice as it is a very sweet voice, and although shows determination, I find can be a very passive voice.
I love the concept of this book. The world and the decisions that Talia have to face at first seem very black and white and she is forced to think about what she is supposed to do, and what she needs to do. I feel like the story is good, but could have had much more potential in world building and background. Because those elements could be expanded on, I find myself with many questions as I read, trying to find greater meaning to our Main Character's internally conflicting mission.
I would say give the book a go to form your own opinion. :) I will be re-listening soon to see if maybe I can gain a better perspective as I have mixed feelings on the book. Now, I rate this 2.5 stars at the moment. That is NOT bad, but I only feel like the story has more potential.
