Tell me No Lies is book two in the Follow Me Back Series by A.V. Geiger. I read Follow Me Back last year and enjoyed it. However, I hadn’t realized it was going to be part of a series so I was a bit miffed at the ending cliffhanger. I felt better once I realized there was going to be another book in the series.
*** If you haven’t yet read book one in this series then I wouldn’t read any further as there may be spoilers***
At the end of book one, we are left not knowing what happened to rock star Eric Thorn and Twitter Queen, Tessa Hart.
In book one, Eric had been feeling frustrated and anxious. Those feelings had increased after another popular rock star was killed by an obsessed fan. His PR people made every decision for Eric, and it didn’t seem like it was about the music anymore. But Eric found an unlikely ally in superfan, Tessa Hart. Tessa had issues of her own, including the fact that she suffered from Agoraphobia. Tessa gained notoriety online after creating the hash tag #EricThornObsessed on Twitter. At first, Eric and Tessa clashed but then grew closer.
Now both Eric and Tessa are gone. Eric’s Twitter account is frozen and his cell phone was found in the snow, smashed with blood all over it. So when Tessa suddenly appears months later, everyone including the police are sure Tessa knows where Eric is.
A story of love, obsession, jealousy, secrets, and lies!
Though I did find the beginning a bit slow, for the most part, this was still a quick read. The story is told from present and the past using flashbacks and interspersed are Tweets from Twitter, Snapchat messages, as well as Police Interview Transcripts. Like the first novel, there were parts of the story that I found implausible. However, this is a fictional YA Thriller so I just tried to go with it.
The author again shows just how social media can interfere with our lives. She brings to light important issues like internet safety, stalking and harassment, Agoraphobia, and other mental health issues.
This was an intriguing read with a lot of action and some good twists and turns. Though I did enjoy the first novel in the series a bit more than this one, I’m still glad I read it as I really wanted to find out what happened with Eric and Tessa. There were a few things that didn’t really work for me and I felt that some questions were left unanswered, but overall, I am satisfied with how things came together in the end.
I'd like to thank Sourcebooks Fire and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
No one knows what happened to pop icon Eric Thorn. His Twitter account has been inactive since his cryptic tweet a month ago. His cell phone was found cracked, bloody, buried in the snow.
Agoraphobic fangirl Tessa Hart knows the truth, but she’s finally left her #EricThornObsessed days behind. She has no intention of ever touching her Twitter app again, especially not after being stalked (partly involving Twitter) months before. But Snapchat…that’s safer, right?
After months of living under the radar, Tessa emerges from hiding, forced to face the deadly consequences of her past. But in the interrogation room, answers only lead to more questions in the pulse-pounding conclusion to the Follow Me Back duology.
Tell Me No Lies picks up shortly after the point that Follow Me Back left off. If you haven’t read Follow Me Back, and want to read this one, you’ll definitely need to read the first book first – it wont stand on its own without the context from the first book! The first book left off on a cliffhanger, so I could not WAIT to get my hands on Tell Me No Lies, so of course I started reading it immediately after being approved for it on Netgalley!
I don’t want to give away too much about the book because of the cliffhanger the first book left off on, so this review will be on the vague side and will be a little tricky to write! Instead of talking too much about the story, I’ll talk about how I felt about it in order to avoid any spoilers!
The first book was told largely though Twitter DMs and conversations, which I really enjoyed. This one has less of that, but is broken up by past events and the present, which are police interview transcripts, so there’s still a little bit of that type of storytelling. There are also some tweets and snapchat conversations throughout the story as well, which continued the theme nicely of being told in an alternative format that we saw in the first book!
I’ll admit that once the book opened and some of my initial questions were answered, I was a little worried the book would be flat and less exciting and dramatic than the first book, and I’m so happy to report that I was completely wrong! The second installment in the series was just as heart-pounding as the first, and has just as much (if not more!) action and tension, and I completely ate it up! There were times that I dropped the book in shock with my mouth hanging open, because some of the reveals were just that good!
All in all, this was an excellent YA thriller, and a great conclusion to the Follow Me Back duology! If you loved the first book, you’ll definitely want to pick this one up! I rated it 4.5 stars. I’d like to thank Netgalley, Sourcebooks Fire, and A.V. Geiger for my copy of the book. It was my pleasure to provide an honest review. Tell Me No Lies is out on June 5, 2018, so be sure to pre-order your copy!
Well that took way too long to get to the good stuff!
The first half was very slow but I persevered because you could see that the author was manoeuvring their pieces carefully to set the scene for drama and suspense. However, this foreshadowing meant I picked the 'bad guy' very early on. I still enjoyed how it all unfolded though, with some exciting and tense scenes. Ultimately, I enjoyed this duology and thought it was a safe but fitting ending that will satisfy it's target audience.
9/9/18: Yeah this book was kinda a let down and nowhere near as good as Follow Me Back. I don't even know what to write my review about because it really wasn't that memorable so idk I guess this is where I end...
2/12/18 UPDATE: WE HAVE A FREAKIN COVER AND RELEASE DATE!!!! WHYYYYY IS IT SO FAR AWAYYYYY?????
I just can't read books that make no logical sense. Tessa, our MC, was kidnapped in the previous book, managed to escape her captor, he got arrested, she gave the police her full statement about everything that happened, and the story could've ended right there. But nooo, because her new celebrity boyfriend Eric and she decide to create a bloody crime scene and make it seem like she killed Eric, so he could get out of his record deal... then they escape to Mexico only with the cash he got by selling his car. That's the first thing that made no sense. They could've just disappeared together without making Tessa a wanted criminal. Then to make the story even more illogical, Tessa's kidnapper gets released because she's now a fugitive and the police doesn't care about what happens to her anymore. But here's where I just couldn't take it anymore: Eric and Tessa are finally forced to admit the whole death thing was staged and get back to their normal lives. But Tessa can't live a normal life because her former kidnapper is out there and she knows he'll strike again.
I'm sorry, but can't she just go to the police now that she's no longer "wanted" and be like, hey, remember that guy who kidnapped me and you released? Could you please arrest him again?
I read most of it. I almost finished. I couldn’t bothered. I really liked the first book, but something about this one just felt off. I didn’t really like how it was going from the very beginning. Meh. Whatever. I’ll just pretend this doesn’t exist.
Update 16/01: Ooooh I like that cover.
Update 27/09:oooooh there's a title. Tell me No lies. Intriguing.
June 1st 2018 huh. Great. Just great. I need this. What kind of cruel human being makes you wait a year after an ending like that!?
Major warning for ableism, minor warning for spoiling Follow Me Back.
*sighs*
When I read Follow Me Back, I actually thought it was a standalone. Imagine my surprise when it turns out to be the first book in a duology! Having enjoyed the book so much, of course I'd go for Tell Me No Lies when I had the chance to read it.
I rather wish I hadn't now.
To give credit where it's due, Tell Me No Lies is exactly as readable as its predecessor and difficult to put down. Every chapter brings some new information, big or small, to light and demands you keep reading. Lately, it's been very easy for me to put down a book and do something else instead, but this is one book that wouldn't let me. Once Tessa and Eric get caught by Eric's awful manager and brought back to Hollywood, Eric and Tessa both become paranoid messes.
Oh, and Blair is out and about, of course. Still very obsessed with Tessa too. Romantically obsessed stalker characters get me every time!
The first sign of what troubles this novel comes from how Tessa and Eric get found in the first place: they go to a villa expecting to meet Dorian Cromwell, a pop star who also faked his death. During a press conference amidst his arraignment for tax evasion, Dorian reaches out to Eric and, when the opportunity presents itself via Snapchat, Eric replies. Our darling couple then proceeds to the villa where Dorian says he'll meet them.
But remember, Dorian just got arrested for tax evasion after his faked his own death. Are the authorities in Europe really going to release him and let him go off to Central America for such a meeting? Of course not! The guy is a flight risk! If Tessa and Eric had taken just a second to think things through, they would have known something was up. Alas, the narrative required they hold the Idiot Ball and walk right into an obvious trap.
That isn't the only time readers will see right through the book either. Tell Me No Lies is full of such transparent, eyeroll-worthy twists.
Then comes the ableism. See, Tessa never refilled her Ativan (also known as lorazepam) before she went on the run with Eric and it's a given that she never did it while hiding with her beau in Mexico either. After the two go to Hollywood and Eric's management cooks up the story that she was hired to pull off the publicity stunt of his "murder," she doesn't get it refilled then either. All that leads to her taking her medication very sporadically throughout the book.
BIG NO-NO THERE FOR MEDS MEANT TO BE TAKEN DAILY. Being that I've been prescribed Paxil as a daily anxiety medication and was formerly prescribed additional Xanax for emergency situations, I know a bit about this. Taking my Paxil as sporadically as Tessa takes her Ativan would give me flu-like symptoms at best and make Paxil less effective in treating my generalized anxiety disorder at worst. The Xanax was approved for me to take sporadically, but I almost never did. Even tiny doses of it knocked me off my feet and sudden anxiety attacks simply didn't happen.
Anyway. Tessa is already on edge in part due to her taking her meds so little, but after she and Eric finally have sex, she stops taking her Ativan altogether. From there, she spirals downwards into being a seriously paranoid unreliable narrator. Why? Because it's so impossible to keep someone on their psychiatric meds and make them an unreliable narrator!
Except that's an accurate description of my mother, who has been on meds for depression for 20+ years and is a highly unreliable narrator.
None of this is on Tessa, whose reasons for taking her meds so haphazardly and then not at all are entirely believable. Plus she's a fictional character. I'm placing the blame on the narrative because it's for the entertainment of largely neurotypical narrators that a mentally ill girl like Tessa is taken off her meds in order to advance and complicate the story.
This happens all the time in any media which stars a mentally ill character. No one can think of any other way to tell stories about us! We're almost never the Chosen One or the hero, entertaining with our journey toward saving the world. Characters like us entertain by suffering until we either die or are granted live-saving medication at the very end of the book.
Even though Tessa gets back on her meds by the end and the message is to stay on them if you have them, the novel relies on her mental health meltdown to entertain readers and give the story more of a thrill by making her point of view untrustworthy. This is ableism toward the mentally ill. Full stop. Find better ways to write us or don't write us at all. All of us, diagnosed or not, deserve better.
Like I said on Twitter,
Keep mentally ill YA characters on their meds 2K18
Stop taking mentally ill characters off their meds to make stuff happen or make them an unreliable narrator 2K18.
If you read and enjoyed Follow Me Back like I did, just pretend it's a standalone. Pretend Tessa did in fact murder Eric and disappear. That's a much better conclusion than what Tell Me No Lies offers you with its ableism, unbelievable miscommunications, and bad twists.
Yes! I Just finished this book in one sitting as I knew I would!! I am still trying to pick my jaw off of the floor!! Was it as crazy as Follow Me Back? Maybe not, but it was suspenseful and actually kept me guessing until the end. The plot twist, woah really twisted!! What really sucked me in from Book 1 was the interrogation parts. It kept me wanting to know it all but gave explanation to things as it went on. The end was imperfectly perfect it makes sense, I feel like there could def be a book 3?? Although, maybe not as it is a duology and wow have these characters been through a tornado and then some. I really liked it, the first book was a little better though. #EricThornObsessed
Review: Holy crap, I just don’t even know what to say right now. Tell Me No Lies was such a wild ride! It’s very unputdownable and once I started, I just had to finish! . Tell Me No Lies picked up right where Follow Me Back left off which means you’re thrown right into the action! It also means that you can just read the first chapter because the next thing you know it’s several hours later and you’re done. Or at least that’s what happened to me haha! . There’s not much I can say without giving things away so let’s just say HOLY SHIT I didn’t see that twist coming! Seriously, WTF? You really got me, Geiger. . Follow Me Back and Tell Me No Lies are both so addicting!! If you haven’t read Follow Me Back then you need to get on that ASAP!
Liked it but didn't fall head over heels like I did for the first book. Still, it was nice to have answers and to get a solid conclusion to this duology. Things I did love about TELL ME NO LIES were the interspersed police interviews and the mystery and suspense that they created. They kept the story moving forward and had that same fantastic spark of storytelling that the first book created. The use of social apps, on the other hand, sort of fell flat in this one. The overall story arc, though, and the climax of the book was fun and perfectly soap-opera dramatic!
*I recieved an advance copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
**An ARC was sent by the publisher in exchange for an honest review**
Y’all.
Y’ALL.
THIS. BOOK. It was everything I wanted and needed it to be! I was head over heels obsessed with Follow Me Back so I could hardly contain my excitement I received a copy of Tell Me No Lies. I believe I read this book in two days. If I could have given up sleeping and working, it would have been read in one day.
Short recap: Nobody knows really what happened to Eric Thorn. His Twitter account has been inactive and nobody knows if he is really dead or not. The last person to have known contact with him is Tessa Hart, the girl who started the “#EricThornObsessed” hashtag on Twitter. The only problem is that Tessa has gone missing as well. But Tessa is a known agoraphobic – can she finally make an appearance to tell everyone what happened?
Tell Me No Lies picks up almost right where Follow Me Back left off. Tessa had been attacked in her home by the guy that has been stalking her and it appears that Eric Thorn was brutally attacked. People actually believe that Eric has been murdered EXCEPT that they cannot find his body. This book starts with transcriptions of police interrogations. These interrogations masterfully follow the story as it unfolds so as I (the reader) find something out, so do the characters. I believe this really helped move the story along and keep the suspense.
I did like how relevant and current this story felt. The first book was told through a lot of DMs, Tweets, and Emails while this book was told in police interrogations and some SnapChat messages. I really liked how Geiger incorporated modern apps to tell her story. It really did feel like something that would happen today. It just felt believable, especially in today’s age where people are more willing to confide and trust people they meet on the internet. It made the story that much more compelling. The pacing was spot on and had me begging to find out what happened. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
I want you to know that I am struggling not to say more about this story because I wanted to give a proper review but no spoilers before the book releases! I do want to stress that this story was just has swoon-worthy and heart-pounding as the first book. I loved the relationship between Eric and Tessa. I will ship those two forever. As the story continued, I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat tearing through the pages to find out what happened to these two. I was hooked and I know you will be to! I did have that worry and fear that the sequel wouldn’t be as good as the first but I was oh so wrong. SO. WRONG. I loved, LOVED this book. I almost didn’t want to finish it because I wanted to keep Tessa and Eric around longer.
I’m going to finish this review by saying YOU WANT THIS BOOK. You want this series! Pick up the first book then binge read the second when it comes out in June. You won’t be sorry!
On some level I appreciate the idea of a story that tackles the weird world of the internet and the dramatic effect it has had on our relationships. We can bond or fall in love virtually and we can also use the internet to hide from reality, or to act out our worst impulses.
I wish this book had more self-awareness about all this, because I found this series kind of disturbing. (You can read more of my thoughts on that in my review of the first book in the series here.
Tell Me No Lies continues the story of the first book. Without spoilers, here are some of the things I'd like to know more about.
1) I'm not sure if the book is suggesting that Tessa's stalker (the backstory of which is still never really explained) triggered her anxiety or whether she had severe anxiety before.
2) Is any of this romantic? This story moves more into swoony romance territory. Or tries to - I wasn't really feeling it. I suffer from pretty bad anxiety myself, but I really felt that this book used anxiety to try to make Tessa seem more feminine and fragile and in need of protection. (In my experience anxiety is a serious barrier to relationships, not in any way an aphrodisiac. But ymmv.)
3) I actually liked Twilight back in the day, but it's been ten years so.... Will we ever move past Twilight fanfic? idk, I've never read the Fifty Shades trilogy, but from the movie trailers, it looks like that Dakota Johnson has both a stalker and an alpha male too and ... why...
4) Was it too much to hope that this book would tie up all the loose ends from the first, rather than just continue to confuse me? Dorian Cromwell - was there any point to that? The stalker - is it so much to ask to find out exactly what happened there back from the beginning in New Orleans? And the . My eyes were rolling out of my head on that.
I can fully accept and endorse that people might enjoy this as a guilty pleasure, but, like Fifty Shades, it just wasn't for me.
If there's one thing I can say about this duology is that it is ADDICTIVE. The way it's written, in police transcripts, tweets, Snapchat DMs, view points of Tessa and Eric - this keeps you turning the pages. I read book one back in April on a flight and could NOT put it down. This book did the same. I started it last night and stayed up late to finish it. The format, the writing and the storyline does keep you wanting more.
I didn't find this one QUITE as compulsive as the first one. It was a bit of the same but now with a different "villain" and a new way to communicate. I will say one thing - it certainly has me looking at my electronic devices and wondering about who might be watching me while I don't know. Technology is amazing but also scary in this day and age. I do appreciate how Geiger brings in a new look at Blair in this book compared to book one. You'll have to read them to know what I'm talking about. No spoilers here.
If you want a fast paced and easy read about today's obsessiveness with social media, pop stars and the scary side to technology, this is a great read for something that could be all too realistic. While there were definitely some ok ok ok… AGAIN moments, I thoroughly enjoyed this. It kept me up and I read this in one sitting.
I look forward to more from Geiger and am satisfied with this duology as I think it ended where it needed to.
TELL ME NO LIES, the sequel to FOLLOW ME BACK continues the story of Tessa, Eric and interrogation for a possible crime.
In some ways, AV Geiger improves on her debut with better writing and more tension. I found myself holding my breath multiple times.
In most ways, TELL ME NO LIES read like an unequal sequel with too many senseless twists, too many bad guys and puzzle pieces that fit together too conveniently.
After being hacked in book 1, I would have expected two paranoid people like Tessa and Eric to take more caution when communicating electronically. I would have expected them not to think a license plate number was a secure password. I would have expected them to at the very least have a code word to test whether they were actually communicating with each other. Or maybe text instead of communicate on social media. Or call.
Readers who enjoyed FOLLOW ME BACK will probably want to see what happens next. TELL ME NO LIES isn’t a terrible book. I enjoyed the reading experience even while frequently rolling my eyes.
Actual Rating: 3.5 stars! Same Review Also Posted On My Blog: Dreamy Addictions
Tell Me No Lies is one of my highly anticipated sequels of 2018. The first book Follow Me back had ended with an horrifying cliffhanger that left me quite shocked, and since then I was pretty much dying to know what really happened at the end. I had high expectations for this book, but sadly it didn’t meet my expectations. To be honest, I really enjoyed it, but I was also left disappointed. The story was engaging and thrilling, but it wasn’t as amazing as the first book. Unlike the first book, this one failed to excite me. Some parts were totally unbelievable and unrealistic. Sometimes the characters made some stupid decisions which really annoyed me. However, despite the flaws, it wasn’t really a boring read.
I’m skipping writing the summary part because I don’t want to give away anything. As the first book, this book also followed the same format starting with a police interrogation transcripts as the story alternates between the past and the present. I liked the police interrogation parts the most because they had always kept me at the edge. There are also lots of transcripts of Twitter Chats, and Snapchat messages. I liked how the author made use of the social media apps in her story and also making us aware of the dangers of social media communication and how it can ruin lives.
Coming to our main characters, the relationship between Tessa and Eric grows even more strong in this book. They’re both totally flawed, fighting their own demons but they’re perfect for each other. Tessa and Eric were quite paranoid in this book and while dealing with their mental issues, they want to be together by hiding from the world. I love flawed characters but these two annoyed me when they made stupid mistakes. As for the other character Blair, he was still alive roaming around everywhere in search for his Tessa. He’s a creepy stalker and I can’t believe that I felt a bit sympathetic towards him at the end. There are some old and new characters that makes an appearance in this book but revealing them will be a spoiler.
To be honest, the Plot was engaging throughout but my major issue was that it felt way too unrealistic. If you could ignore that fact, then you would probably enjoy this book more than I did. The story begins with a slow start, but don’t worry the pace eventually picks up speed. I liked the sweet romance between Tella and Eric but it’s not the central focus of the story. There are lots of unexpected twists in the book that’ll keep you hooked to the plot till the end. The writing was pretty good. The book was told in third person POV switching between the past to the present police interrogation. Its unique format is one of the aspects I liked about this series.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read filled with mystery, suspense, thrill, drama, and romance. Besides the Internet and social media dangers, this book also heavily deals with mental illness such as anxiety and agrophobia. The ending really isn’t what I had expected, the author cleverly crafted it. Although It’s a pretty satisfying ending, I’m still left with mixed feelings.
Tell Me No Lies is the conclusion to the Follow Me Back duology that focuses on social media, mental health, and celebrity lifestyle. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy Tell Me No Lies as much as it’s predecessor, Follow Me Back.
Tell Me No Lies lacks the focus that Follow Me Back possessed with clarity. Instead, the sequel reads like a hodge podge of plot ideas that are not fully formed and fleshed out. Because of this lack of clarity in terms of plot progression, miscommunication became a driving force of the novel. Almost every problem could have been solved had the two main characters spoken to each other candidly. This miscommunication was frustrating and eye roll worthy.
Similarly to the previous novel, Tell Me No Lies focuses on mental health and illness, especially anxiety and anxiety disorders. Geiger packs a lot of useful and pertinent techniques on how to deal with anxiety throughout the novel. It’s expertly woven within the context of the novel so that it never feels out of place or obvious. For this reason, and this reason alone, I rated Tell Me No Lies three stars instead of two since it’s one of the better young adult novels that normalizes anxiety and anxiety disorders.
Overall, Tell Me No Lies is a disappointment after the almost flawless opening novel. If you enjoyed Follow Me Back for its commentary on the role social media plays in our daily lives and how it then interacts with mental health within a thrilling mystery, Tell Me No Lies will most likely disappoint you. My recommendation? Skip Tell Me No Lies and let your head cannon fill in the blanks.
Tell Me No Lies is a fast paced read with twists and turns in every chapter. I could not put this book down.
Everyone thinks that Eric Thorn is dead, and that Tessa was the one who killed him. In reality, Tessa and Eric escaped the clutches of Blair, Tessa's creepy stalker, as well as all the other crazy Eric Thorn fans by running away to Mexico. Everything is working out great for them, until Eric's celebrity friend comes back to life after faking his own death, and is now asking Eric for help. The only problem with returning to the spotlight is that everyone is after Eric and Tessa, and the people who were once close to them can no longer be trusted.
I absolutely loved the first book in this series, and this one definitely didn't disappoint. Just like the first book, I read this one in a day because I could not put the book down. It is a fairly short read, but theres so much action in every chapter that you just cant put it down.
I really liked both Tessa and Eric. Tessa had such a huge character development in the first book, I never thought that she could top it in the second book, but she definitely did. Tessa continues to impress me, especially as she's working through her problems and comes to terms with her own issues. Their romance is absolutely wonderful, I shipped them from beginning to end.
Overall, I loved the pace of the book, the characters and all the plot twists that I didn't see coming. This book was definitely a lot more unpredictable than the first, and the character development was phenomenal. I will be looking forward to reading more book from this author in the future.

Meinung:
Deshalb gebe ich Tell Me No Lies 4 Sterne.
