Mathematics is an integral part of our life but many of us think of it only as a subject to be studied in school or college. In this book, Aditi and Sudhir Singhal, renowned maths educators, demystify mathematical principles and outline fascinating, fun and easy-to-learn techniques to excel in this field. Divided into two parts, How to Be a Mathemagician is a double-sided book (flip the book around to switch between sections!) that packs twice the punch, with one section containing tricks and delightful activities, and the other stimulating problem-solving steps to simplify calculations, quirky maths facts and much more.
Meant for all age groups-students, teachers and parents alike, How to Be a Mathemagician will make you fall in love with the world of numbers.
Not sure who the target audience for this book is; or even the recommended age group. Some of the 'problems' illustrated here, I believe, could be fairly useful (lateral thinking). That said, many of the problems illustrated seem to be worded a bit carelessly.
There are huge assumptions that the author expect readers to make when solving some of these lateral thinking questions (for which data / conditions have not been explicitly stated) - this is antithetical to what critical thinking requires!
If you have immense love for mathematics like me, this book is a treat for you. Maths is fascinating and getting to explore more of the subject through new dimensions is interesting and satisfying. The book itself is an assortment of different facts, tricks, tips, shortcuts and lots of fun. Aditi and Sudhir have a lot of experience with math workshops and have shared a lot of their experiences and wisdom in the book.
I went through the book, chapter by chapter at different intervals of time, letting the concept or material to sync in. It is not an advanced book but it is important to savor the treat than swallow the whole in one go. I really enjoyed reiteration of few concepts, learning some new ones of which some are very helpful.
There are a few applications in the beginning which the nerd inside me savored. I smirked at a few smart facts and tips. I also enjoyed solving some of the problems. Overall an enjoyable book and can be read at all levels of knowledge of the subject. I will be dreaming numbers!!
Interesting topics like magic square and other puzzle and calculation game to keep your brain more active. A good book for children and it promises to make mathematics more interesting!
