The number and amount of toxins in the environment is at an all-time high, and the American Cancer Institute links three-quarters of all cancer cases to environmental factors. This book offers consumers a way to effectively fight the ill effects of these toxins and live a healthier life. In addition to listing the toxins that are found in such everyday sources as food, cosmetics, and cleaning products, this guide offers nontoxic alternatives. Toxic influences on the mind and spirit are also explored and suggestions for achieving emotional balance round out this whole-health plan. Knowing the risks and rewards of a less toxic lifestyle empowers consumers to make the choices that result in not only better physical health, but in improved emotional health as well.
Life- and health-enhancing topics include: • Why the need to detox is greater than ever in the 21st century • How toxins in the environment affect our health • Simple solutions to counteract the negative effects of toxins • Where to find organic food that is inexpensive and convenient • Why the cosmetic counter can be a potent source of toxins • How to safely detoxify the home environment • How indigestion contributes to toxic overload in the body • The scientific link between disease and toxicity • What detox aids can be found right in the kitchen • Which herbs are safe to aid in cleansing the body • What type of exercise boosts the body’s natural detox • The detoxification properties of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients • How detoxification aids in weight loss
This book completely changed my life. It isn't about one specific "cleanse" but rather a way to live your life -- such as cleaning out your liver with a glass of lemon water in the morning...or the effect that living near a dry cleaner can have on your life. I suffered from heartburn/acid reflux every day of my life until I read this book and learned a simple, yet life-altering key to curing this: enzymes and eating more raw food. Overprocessed food does not have the enzymes to help break it down and therefore your body has to work so hard. By simply taking a full spectrum enzyme, you can avoid all of those gastric discomforts. That is just one little thing you will learn. I've now made my close friends and family members read this and they all agree that it is a pretty fantastic read.
Extremely informative and easy to read. I learned a little something from every chapter. It is difficult and expensive to change every aspect in your life in order to prevent coming in contact with all of the toxic properties we use and consume every day. However, there are some small changes I believe everybody could make in order to dramatically decrease the toxins they are exposed to. For example: It would be ideal to be able to install a water purifier at the source: in your piping. Not everybody has the money or ability to do so. I am one of those people. However, I am able to invest in a shower head that purifies the water as well as sink attachments. I love that this book offers solutions for people at all levels. This book was engaging as well as eye opening. One thing I really appreciated was the use of facts over scare tactics throughout the entire book.
I have lived with autoimmune disease, chronic pain and chronic fatigue for nearly half my forty years of life. Grasping every bit of information I can find about my health and what medical science, both conventional and alternative, can do for me, I feel that I am probably well versed in medical science in general, more than the average person. For this reason most of this book's content is really just common sense to me. But that doesn't mean I don't find it helpful. It is tremendously helpful and Dr. Fitzgerald makes it all so easy to understand. She provides a wealth of information, but the book is well organized and does not overwhelm.
I wish I can say this book changed my life and I was completely well after following Dr. Fitzgerald's advice, but I'm not there yet. Her recommendations have however made my pain, my fatigue and my life more manageable and for that I am grateful.
This is a book I go back to time and again when I am in need of motivation. Yes, it would be expensive to incorporate all that Dr. Fitzgerald suggests in her book. But for me,someone who strives for the opportunity to be well and live a better life, even few, small changes can make a difference. This book will always have a home on my shelf and I thank Dr. Fitzgerald for sharing her knowledge and wisdom so we all have an opportunity to be well.
Favorite quotes: The term "health insurance" seems to be a contradiction in terms. Having health insurance does not insure you of good health. Instead it should be called "sick insurance" because it only makes money available if you symptoms are severe enough to deem them worth treating. ......."A real insurance plan is one in which you take responsibility for your own health by educating yourself and taking action on a daily basis."
Changed my whole outlook on food: and I'm a pescatarian to begin with. This made me really think about buying organically and locally using products made with the fewest chemicals. A must read.
