Shadows of Magic #1

Bound Sorcery

Rate this book
I'm being hunted. And I don't remember why. 700 years ago, a sorceress decided to subjugate the entire human race. You might recall the first step of her plan - they called it the Black Death. Since then, anyone with magical talent is brought to the Acadamh, an ancient magical university, to be trained ... and people with dangerous magical specialties tend to disappear there. And my specialty? Well, I've never been able to use my magic as far as I can remember, but they tell me that it is rot, and death. So I've been hidden, passed from safe house to safe house. But the Hunters are on my trail now. Specifically, the very worst one who could have found out about me: Daiman Bradach, legendary druid - ruthless, powerful, and absolutely devoted to the Acadamh. I'm going to have to get good with my magic. More than good. I'm going to have to become just as much of a legend as he is - fast. Or I'm as good as dead.

Natalie Grey

Natalie Grey grew up in rural New England, surrounded by a lot of vegetables and relatively little excitement. Therefore, she was obliged to make up excitement by pretending to be a knight, mage, jet-setting international assassin, jedi, or (occasionally) a shape-shifting dragon. She read everything she could get her hands on, from Lord of the Rings to Modesty Blaise, and eventually started writing her own stories full of what-ifs and snarky put-downs. Now she lives with her two German Shepherd mixes in the frozen wilds of Minnesota, and does a lot of inventive swearing while she shovels.

I received a free copy of this book via Voracious Readers for a review.

I really liked the world that Natalie Grey created. Sorcerers, druids and magic with a history that goes back hundreds of years and kick ass heroines which is what made me choose this book.

I only gave it 3 stars because it felt like parts were missing that would have made the character and story development make more sense. As an example, the development and tension of the romance between the two main characters was missing for me. Also, in my email description of the book, it says that there are kick ass heroines. There were a couple of other women in the book but they were not part of the story for long. You see a hint of it with Nicky at the end, but only at the end. Part of that will surely be because of the lack of memories but I was hoping for more kick assery from her throughout the book because it is part of her nature.

Also, my copy shows in Google Play Books as only 185 pages long while Goodreads and Amazon both list it at 242 pages so not sure why such a discrepancy. It was a quick and enjoyable read in that I wanted to see what would happen next and wanted to be invested in the characters. However, it very much reads as part of as a larger book that was made into two or three smaller books and that filler was added to make it a series of books and not one book. I hope that is not the case in the rest of the series because if it is tightened up a bit, it will be an enjoyable trip.

Brava!

Kindle Unlimited - Yay!

I discovered Natalie Grey via her Kurtherian Gambit universe series Trials and Tribulations. I really like her work and was happy to find she's doing a totally separate series. Can't come up with anything negative. Pristine copy. Well written characters that you want to follow. And a truly imaginative and interesting storyline that never drags or wanders off into rambling descriptive detail.

Special mention for the poster worthy cover art. Perfect model choice. She actually matches the character description. The rich eye candy colors and background truly suit the storyline.

What if you were to find out that you truly qualify for the title of "world's worst person"? So where do you go from there? Looking forward to seeing where she takes this story.

I want to start by thanking the author for a free copy of this book for review via Voracious Readers Only.

The story of Nicky, thousands of years old and unbeknown to her a sourceress of great power. The concept was a good one, the story ok but the story telling just lacked depth. The main character could have been so interesting and the journey to uncover her past should have been something that kept you turning pages not wanting to wait for the next layer to be uncovered.

Instead I found Nicky to be quite shallow, moments after running for her life and witnessing the only person she knew be slain by her recent captor, Nicky is swooning over rippling abs ......

Written in the first person most of the story was centred around Nicky's thoughts, the thoughts of what appeared to be a hormonal teenager lusting after anything that moved. Quite a surpise to discover Nicky is infact thousands of years old, even having no memory of the years the character lacked the wisdom and maturity so many years should have brought.

I found the use of adjectives to often be out of place, not really making sense in the context. The vocabulary used seemed quite limited.

I gave this book 3 stars as the story was easy enough to read and not too long. The style of writing was not really to my liking and I would have preferred more depth to the main character and more suspense to have you unwilling to put the book down.

I received a free copy of this through Voracious Readers Only in exchange for an honest review.

My main gripe with books is the friendship or love between characters. Usually I dislike most friendship/love arcs because they're rushed or one or more of characters are unlikeable so it makes no sense to me why that character is liked. Not with Bound Sorcery. I fully followed the characters feeling and completely emphasised with all of them which came as an incredibly pleasing shock.

I got hooked on this book from the first line! I can count the amount of times that has happened on one hand. Not only was this story gripping and intriguing from the get-go, it staying gripping and intriguing until the final line.

I've never known what genres are my favourite, I just read what interests me, but I realised while reading this that fantasy is by far, my favourite. Sorcerers, druids, magic, incredible secrets and a wonderfully relatable heroine (obviously not in all aspects) is just perfect for me.

The ONLY thing making me give this four stars instead of five is that I think it should have been longer, like a lot longer. I was halfway through thinking "wait, it's only just started, why has this much of story already unfolded?".

That being said, this is the perfect book for you if you want an easy, quick but engaging story that you'll remember for a long time to come.

Thank you Natalie Grey, I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

A mix of ideas from Harry Potter and Arthurian tales of Merlin and Morgana

This was such an awesome story!!! Its about good magic versus evil magic, and the grey area in between!! It is an original idea that has ideas that are similar to those seen in the Harry Potter series, with touches of Merlin and Morgana Le Fay from Arthurian legends. The story was gripping, and just the right pace to not be boring and to not leave you confused as to what happened!! The characters are all very real feeling, with wonderful growths and inner turmoils!!! I'm afraid to even try to type an actual review of the story for fear of getting too excited and spoiling it! You just need to read it and find out for yourself!!!

There was only a few small hiccups here and there in the authors attempts to describe some of the magic happening, but what the author was trying to convey did get across to the reader, just not as smoothly as it possibly could have..

I am obligated to mention that I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the author via Voracious Readers Only, but I ended up reading it through Kindle Unlimited.

I was having trouble wanting getting in the mood to start this book. And let me tell you, I'm glad I did!

I read this book in less that 48 hours, I just couldn't put it down. I felt that the story and characters were fantastic, especially when dealing with memory loss and that it progressed at a reasonable pace.

The only thing I found lacking was a basic idea of the world -im still not sure if this is a modern world with magic, or an AU with larger differences. You find out a little of this later in the book but it would have been nice at the start, even if it was just what the main character was seeing, as she didn't have any memories. I also agree that the book felt a little too short, like it was a larger novel cut into smaller pieces. I would have happily kept reading this adventure as the pinnacle of the story felt a little rushed and the book ended a little abruptly, in order to get you on to the next one quicker I'm sure.

Overall a great book and I will happily keep reading the rest in the series.

I received a complimentary version of this book from Voracious Readers.

I found this book to be an enjoyable and quick read. I loved the world that is created and the idea of the differing factions of sorcerers/wizards. The world building that I especially enjoyed was the separation of the magic and non-magic created by the author that really reflects the ideals of the magical society.

However much I enjoyed the world, I didn't really connect with some of the character developments, especially the romance. It felt forced and under developed. The idea behind the romance was good but needed more time in the story to develop and for the characters to build a genuine connection. I also felt that the "secret" of Nicky's identity could have been held a little closer to the chest to add a little more tension to the story and leave the reader wondering a little more. This would also have left Nicky more time to discover who she is 'now' and add more dissonance between her now and before.

I thought this novel was absolutely stunning.

It took a little bit of time to get into - Nicky, the main character, has spell-induced amnesia so she isn't able to reveal much of herself. She's thrust into a world she doesn't understand (which means that the reader learns with her), which has its own rules and politics. She must learn who she can trust and decide for herself which path is right for her.

I thought all the characters were well-nuanced and, generally, very human (in spite of the elements of fantasy incorporated). The world itself is extremely vividly rendered.

The writing itself is very evocative - I found myself in literal tears - twice. The wider themes this novel explores are very well handled without being preachy. I can't overstate how much I enjoyed reading this book. I really look forward to reading more from this author.

I received this as a free copy through Voracious Readers and I’m glad I picked it! I’ve been into the fantasy genre lately and this really filled that craving!

Bound Sorcery is an interesting take on magic versus mundane. It takes philosophical topics and twists them into the storyline with ease.

It’s a story of rediscovery and illustrates that we are in charge of our own destiny. It has a strong female lead who takes us on the journey through spells and druids - kicking ass along the way and standing up for her beliefs.

The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is that I found the resolution to the climax came too easily. It felt a little like all the build up ended in half a page. I would have liked there to be more of a challenge or more description; however, I’m very intrigued by the prologue of the next book and can’t wait to read it!

This is a really good book!
I received a complimentary review copy of this book from the author via Voracious Readers only. This book had me hooked from page one. The character development in this book is fantastic and I enjoyed learning more about each of the characters as I read more of the book. The book has a brilliant moral undertone regarding being who you chose to be, not what other people think or want you to be. I think that is very relevant to everyone’s life at some point and the way the book explores this is really great. The environments created in the book were wonderful and I enjoyed mentally visiting each place throughout the course of the reading the book. After reading this book, I will definitely be getting the next book in the series and I can’t wait to read it.

I received this copy from Voracious Readers in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed this book, Its about a girl Nicky who has amnesia and is then thrust into a world she doesnt remember but she inherently knows she belongs there. I wont say anything else as it would be spoilers.

I enjoyed the writing style of the author it was smooth and easy to follow along with. The characters were well thought out and I liked watching them grow or figuring out who they wanted to be, and how they wanted to do that.

I enjoyed that there are both sorcerers and druids in the story as the magic is different so your constantly learning about new tidbits. I will be interested to continue the series as I'm sure there is more to learn and more surprises in store.

It has the potential to be a great book. The beginning starts off at a good pace, and I felt like I had to know what was coming next. It had some good twist that even I didn't see coming. However when I got about half way through and the more I read after that, it just felt rushed and there were part which could have had more detail, but unfortunately were just skipped over. The last couple of chapter it felt like she got her memories and powers back, her former trainer dies, they realise they love each other, and then not even a epic battle later its all over.

this was the first book I got though voracious readers....and let me say i’m not disappointed. It’s been a while since i’ve fangirled this hard haha. I absolutely adore this book. Some people in the reviews mentioned something like the romance was rushed or whatever, but personally it didn’t feel that way at all. It just wasn’t all complicated or crazy dragged out. Personally, i was looking for a nice lighter read, with some action, fantasy, and just the right splash of romance, and i’d say i found everything i wanted here. I’ve already told a few of my friends to check this book out, and i’m excited to read the next one!

**SOME SPOILERS**
I received this book through Voracious Readers Only. It was good. It held my interest and I will read the sequel when it comes out. However, I will say that I thought the main character needed to have better moments. A lot of the book was spent with her struggling with having powers...we get it, you have them, but there is NOTHING you can do about besides not be a total a**hole this time around. The character I really liked was Damian, the struggle felt real and I enjoyed reading more about the druid power. All in all I did enjoy it but there were too many moments of the main character complaining and cowering away from herself. Buck up lady, there's work to do!

I received a free copy of this book via Voracious Readers for a review.

Bound Sorcery was an easy, enjoyable read with an interesting story. It is the first book I read from this author and I liked the world she built, although it took me a moment to understand that everything was happening in the modern era of Starbucks. The story was interesting, but sometimes difficult to follow. Maybe it was because of Nicky's missing memories, but I felt like there could have been more character developing. I liked the dynamics between the main characters, even if their attraction seemed rushed at moments. I am curious to see what will happen next and I'm looking toward reading the next tome.

I do recommend it as a light reading to anyone that enjoys magic, action and romance.

This was a fun, fast read. It kind of reminds me of basic a fantasy version of a beach read/romance novel without any sex. I enjoyed the pacing and the character's view was well written. I started suspecting the twist (revealed about 1/3 to 1/2 way in) a bit early so I'm glad that was revealed not long after. I like that the character struggles with who she was but understands that she was that person once she gets her memories back. I also enjoyed that the story wrapped up cleanly while leaving itself open for a sequel / series.

Basically it was exactly what I was looking for when I read it!

Unique

This is my 4th book I've read of Ms Grey's, the previous 3 were from within the Krutherian Gambit Universe and all worth the time. Really enjoyed reading this story. A unique plot unlike anything I'd read before and am already looking forward to reading the next book in the series. Found the characters and their world fascinating and something entirely different from any of the other urban fantasy books I've read. Loved the surprising unexpected end. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys reading about magic.

A fantastic follow up to Bound Sorcery! Exciting, and full of twists and surprises! Natalie Grey's gift of showing the fight between good and evil is full of gray areas is amazing. The characters motivations are all so deeply layered, and as soon a we learn something about one of them, it's clear that there is so much more to learn. I love the added humor in the dark moments that make them real. As expected, I have no idea where book three will lead us, but I'm hooked and can't wait to find out!

I received a free copy of the book from Voracious Readers Only, and WOW! The book is a perfect balance of fast-paced adventure and full immersion. I loved the characters and the dialogue and development felt natural, not forced to satisfaction, but entirely relatable and human. It was a level of normalcy I wasn't expecting, but wholly appreciated. The ending was satisfying, yet left you eager to read the next book. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Enjoyable book overall. I was taken in by the story very quickly and was immersed in the engaging roles throughout. The characters reacted to their situations in believable manners and adjusted to the twists in their lives. There were a couple times in the main character's relationships that seemed a bit rushed and I was looking for more backstory once her memories were involved, but perhaps there's more in the sequel.
Overall a delightful read. Thanks!

I honestly wasn’t sucked into this book, it was a good story and enjoyable read but it was lacking something as well. I didn’t feel like I got to a point where I cared about the main character. Having her mind be erased and then the reason why was a bit of a let down to me. While that was one of the big “reveals” it just didn’t seem to flow well for me. This book even ended on a cliffhanger and I wasn’t inclined to read the next one. I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers

Nicky is running from a hunter but he catches her and she goes with him, knowing she has no other choice but is she doing the right thing. He is taking her to school of sorts for magic which she has. But Nicky remembers none of it and is about to find out theres a reason why.

This was a really interesting beginning to the series. The story builds steadily to an interesting but slightly open ending, setting up for the next book. The writing is good and the world building is steady. The characters are great and I especially liked Daiman. A good beginning and look forward to more.

I loved the premise of this book, and I really wanted to like it more than I did, but there were several big issues with it that I just couldn't ignore. The concept was incredibly interesting, and I was looking forward to seeing this badass outcast heroine fight through her trials and tribulations and prove that she's more than just her dangerous powers. Unfortunately, the character was a bit inconsistent, and the badass ladies weren't as present as I hoped they would be. I enjoyed the writing style, but I do feel like this would have benefited from a few more revisions.

You are BOUND to love this!

I decided to read this book because you are an author in the KGU, but with this story that's changed, now you are the shadows of magic author who writes in the KG universe. Good job! An intriguing story with an interesting twist, No spoilers, but this is a quick moving story, that leaves you clamoring for more. If you are a KGU reader that sound familiar?

This was surprisingly good!!!

It's the first in a series. The dilemmas were well laid out and thought through. The resolutions were equally well done. There's enough of the gooey eyes and throbbing hearts stuff to keep the romantics happy, but the magic was really exceptionally well done... the Druidism and Sorcery subjects are handled with grace and little confusion... it's worth the time spent and I will be looking for more of this series...

The storyline was pretty good and I enjoyed that aspect of it. There were some aspects of the writing that just tainted it for me. It lost some of the magic for me with all the "staring at abs" type lines that felt out of place and much of the cursing did as well. I felt like several of the characters were too similar. There were also just some errors in the writing here and there which negatively impacted the story flow a bit.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author via Voracious Readers Only. A woman without a memory and her magic bound, immortal Nicola “Nicky” is running for her life being chased by a druid sent to capture her. After being captured she slowly learns who she really is and why her most dangerous magic was bound so many times by so many different people. This book was highly interesting and presented magic and druids in a totally new light, and I really enjoyed it.

Having been given a chance to read and review this book for free by Voracious Readers and the author I jumped at the chance to support a new author and am glad I did. Grey's writing enables the reader to experience a new world as clearly as if they were actually there and the characters begin to feel like they are personal friends.
I would highly recommend this book to any reader but especially to fans of fantasy series along the lines of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter

The author does an excellent job at weaving together the magic world and the "normal" world. The characters are likeable though not necessarily very in depth. The story and concept is interesting and makes for an engaging read! I was expecting some "kick ass" heroines as the book description said but only really got one, so hopefully there are more in the next book.

A fast-moving adventure filled with magic and memory loss. Nicky has lost her memory and is told she is being pursued by an evil sorcerer. She needs to find out what is going on and why they are after her.
Unfortunately, I couldn't really connect with the main character and kind of saw the twist coming. Everyone is either in love with her or horrified by her awesome powers and she doesn't really know what is happening most of the time. Not bad but, not something I would reread.
