Set against the backdrop of the Denmark Vesey rebellion in 1860s Charleston, this passionate tale follows a black woman who is determined to be part of the uprising, and the man who vows to keep her safe.

Even today the color of your skin, plays a large part in how you are received and treated by others. To light, to dark, to short, to tall, why can't we just be accepted for who we are.
I gave this read a 3.5 due to it took me a couple of months to finish it. I enjoyed the story, but it was a very slow read. The main characters just did not take me on that journey, I expect when I read books. I want to feel like I'm actually there with the characters experiencing their ups and downs with them, but I never got that with these characters. I enjoyed the story (dealing with slavery and the issue pure blacks had with other blacks being part white or as they called them, mulatto) more than the romance between the main characters. I love Ms. Washington's writing style, but I just needed more from the two main characters, Jacinta Mclver and Solomon Dikembe.
I am HUGE fan of AlTonya Washington and I have yet to be disappointed. I was TOTALLY thrilled and entertained with her latest work. "Passion's Furies" is an intriguing historical romance set in the 1820s in Charleston, SC, where slavery reigns. With the talk of a major revolution on the rise, Jason McIvers is eager to have his head-strong daughter, Jacinta taken away from all the impending turmoil and danger that is sure to follow this uprising. I was thoroughly CAPTIVATED as I took this journey with Jacinta McIver, a free woman of color and Solomon Dikembe, a wealthy mulatto business man who lives in the North. Solomon and Jacinta both move in circles that other blacks during this time ONLY dream of. Jacinta is portrayed as a beautiful, intelligent, strong-willed, independent woman, although somewhat naïve and definitely a bit spoiled. And Solomon is a handsome, intelligent, ALPHA male, who once he meets Jacinta, is determined to protect her from any/all harm, including her own foolish antics. When these two come together the attraction is "off-the-charts". I enjoyed the physical and verbal sparring between the very feisty Jacinta and the all too charming Mr. Dikembe. But will Jacinta EVER be able to see past the color of Solomon's skin and learn to trust him with her life, as well as her heart?!! While I enjoyed the romance between this couple; I was also CAUGHT UP in the informative and educational tidbits of history provided throughout this tale. At times I found myself LOL at the hilarious antics of Jacinta and the witty dialogue throughout. And other times I was saddened and overcome with tears by the struggles of our people during this time. Ms. Washington has definitely given her fans another WINNING love story. Kudos, Ms. Washington, and I hope to read more of your historical romance in the future.
I checked this book out at the library because the blurb said it took place in the 1860s. Unfortunately, this is not a Civil War era romance. It takes place in Charleston in the 1820s. I liked this story even though Solomon was a bit too alpha for my taste. Jacinta McIver is a wealthy free black woman and her father wants to see her married before slave rebellion breaks out in Charleston and threatens her safety. He marries her off to Solomon Dimbke a wealthy mulatto man from the North. This is the first book I've read that explored the racial tension between full blood blacks and mulattoes. I found this interesting. The book was well researched and although I had small issues with a few things in this book I plan to read more of Ms. Washington's books.
While the main plot love between two stubborn individuals, the subplot focused on the attempted Vesey Rebellion in Charleston, SC. Washington was able to tell a tale of love and history eloquently.
