They may be refugees but Andie Sorenson never chose to flee when government forces abduct her to the “safety” of a military-operated compound. Lance Corporal Kaleb Novelli is an enigma, but with each plunge through another layer, Andie finds herself captured in a way she never imagined. She knows they have no future. They can’t even have a present, but that doesn’t stop her heart from committing to a man she can never have. The only one she trusts in this battle of lies and manipulation.
But they’ve found their paradise in hell, and she can’t shake the feeling that Kaleb Novelli is not just a player.
He’s the game.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️STARS ARC BOOK REVIEW Release Date-6/6/18
This was an unexpected gem emotive and heart-wrenching in all of its brutality. But it was also equally uplifting and profound. I felt so connected to the story and the characters and this was a read that managed to sneak up on me in stealth mode catching me completely unawares with its rawness and individuality.
From the beginning I was so intrigued this was just so unique and different it was in a genre of its own class and I found myself struggling to classify this as it crossed so many genre boundaries. Delivering a profound message and agenda it was a real standout story that captured my attention with its distinct voice.
Traitor in its first half seemed to rely more on the sentiment and simple interactions between Kaleb and Andie than any shock tactics to hook and draw in its reader and that was a real plus point for me..Maybe that’s why in the second half the sheer brutality portrayed was such a contrast and it really reflected back the almost simplistic beginning when placed and held up against such utter savagery as we encountered in “The prisoner” chapters.
The prose used here was good building anticipation and a sense of injustice when placed against this post-apocalyptic waste-ground.There was such originality in the way this story unfolded and Its a tale of two halves and though told in dual POV rather than it being alternate chapters; which is the usual norm this book is split down the centre with Andie's perspective first; closely followed by Kaleb's.
Also rather than chapters dedicated to the build-up in Kaleb and Andie's relationship what we are given is a series of flashbacks to then more closely explain just how this pairs deep and profound connection managed to develop. This was such an original way of narrating and I liked it.
So the author doesn't go into great back detail here it is assumed that the reader is somewhat aware of previous past endeavours. I found that this was not an issue as the story is somewhat self-explanatory and easy to follow along with.
This has a sort of dystopian post-apocalyptic vibe to it a civil war rages across all fronts and our two main characters both seem to have their own personal roles to play this is almost a love across the barricades romance one where you are forced to pick a faction but where both are equally abhorrent in their behaviours and intentions both sides equally as guilty and nether are innocent, both awash in shades of grey; is the real sense you take away from this touching poignant tale.
In fact its poor Kaleb who gets caught in this crossfire who is the ultimate victim here a pawn in this stalemate of wills and at the mercy and whims of powerful individuals. It's truly heartbreaking to witness the extent of his suffering at the hands of a monster and I could have wept rivers of pain for his agony, torment and terror. How much misery and despair he must have endured internally to swallow his pride and beg for mercy in the way he did; truly tragic and dehumanising; a casualty of war not of his making.
But we also get to experience the other side of the coin just when you think life can't give you any more surprises it throws you curveballs. That hope is not lost and people can still amaze you with there ingrained humanity. Ultimately what I took away from this was a profound sense of faith and that even in the dark there can be a glimmer of light for Kaleb, this is Andie she is his very beacon of hope loved the ending here got to say i was worried for a minute so was pleased to not have my expectations dashed just for cruel shock value It was a bit of a phew moment for me for sure.
This was my first book by this author but definitely won't be my last; I can't recommend this enough and this is fiction at its best.Thank You to the Author for providing me with an ARC of "Traitor of which I have reviewed voluntarily all opinions expressed are entirely my own. Traitor by Alyson Santos is the novel that shouldn’t have been written. No. That's not what it is. It’s the story you never expected to be written. It is so unique, so different it’s a category killer between suspense, romance, adult dystopian, new adult, and something entirely eclectic. It draws you in and doesn’t stop until you’re rushed out on the other side with a gasp of incredulity.
As a reader, you need to be a lover of— Love. Jarring suspense. Not knowing where the author leads you.
Yes. Go blind into Traitor, and you will thank me later. It’s poignant yet to the point, edited to perfection, not wasting words while still giving the reader everything in the full color palette needed. Sometimes, it paints hopeless shades of gray. At other times it’s the vibrant energy of sunny skies.
Alyson Santos is the master of twists, and in Traitor, the mystery of Kaleb Novelli—the soldier, the man, the captor, the prisoner—unravels slowly between the obsessed fingers of Andie Sorenson. As readers, we follow a budding love that soon plunges deep. We learn to know the unwavering kindness of a marked man and the strength of an intelligent woman with an agenda.
I’ll leave you with a message that might remain cryptic until that last page. Saviors and saved. When all is said and done, it’s still unclear who’s who.
I’ll never think of mint and tomatoes the same way ever again. 🥺😢😭
As I said in my update, I have no idea how this amazing book doesn’t have more attention. How books like The Hunger Games (which I liked) reach the height of millions of copies sold and a movie rendition while books such as this treasure stay hidden.
The world is weird sometimes, I suppose.
This book has an H and h I utterly adored. Their love for one another with so pure and true, and what they risked and endured for one another was truly moving.
Not that the book wasn’t complete, but I wish it had been made into a 3-part series, honestly. I am left wanting more because I liked it so much.
This one started slow for me but it just got better and better throughout. Pretty awesome romantic suspense. Only complain is that I wanted more, more of this story. I need a good epilogue with books like these! Anyways, Alyson Santos is such a talented writer, I would read anything she writes. Totally recommend.
It's irony when a reviewer says you should go into this book blind. Just jump in both feet and take the plunge. I promise you won't be disappointed. This book doesn't fit into any particular genre it's a monster all it's own. Sure there is love and drama and mystery but seriously Alyson Santos how do I classify it?
Andie Sorenson is living in her Area with her mother, Struggling to make the rations last and doing their intended jobs they make life their own. They are complacent but they have a roof over their head. A civil war has broken out and they are taken from their home. They are told they will be living a better life within the relative safety of this compound. They are separated and given jobs and living quarters. Andie is given the task of being the assistant of Lance Corporal Kaleb Novelli. It's here a tentative friendship starts.
Lance Corporal Kaleb Novelli has endured torture and tragedy. He is trying to get back to life as normal as possible. Kaleb while keeping his head down and doing his job is a rule breaker. Breaking those rules have serious consequences but it's worth the risk. He knows he's being watched and one day he is assigned an assistant. He doesn't want to drag a civilian into the mess of his life but immediately falls for Andie.
My words can't do this book justice. I can't put down here how complex this book was. It dropped little nuggets of truth till the big boom happened. You find yourself saying you sneaky bastards the whole time. Alyson Santos really hit it out the park with this one. If you life mystery and books that make you guess till the end then this is your book.
Traitor by Alyson Santos is one of those books that catches you out of left field and draws you in so completely you find yourself consumed with the characters and the storyline.
Santos has created a world where there is a blur between who is right and who is wrong. No one knows for sure who is 'good' and who is 'evil'. And just when you think you have it figured out, Santos will pull the rug right from underneath you!
I loved the two main characters, Andie Sorenson & Kaleb Novelli. Andie is a young women thrown into a strange new situation all in the name of protection and peace, and she finds herself seeking refuge in the young soldier Kaleb.
However, things are not always what they seem. And both Andie and Kaleb will face many obstacles before they can even begin to believe in hope again.
This book took me on an emotional in depth journey. Santos weaves so many layers into this storyline and leaves you wanting more! Truly a phenomenal read filled with truths and realities, and most of all hope and love.
Life isn't black and white. Good guys, bad guys. Love, hate. War, peace. Safety, danger. It's all a tangled web of woven intricacies. Alyson Santos brings all that and more to the table, in this poetic tale of one man, and one woman, on opposite sides of the fence. If you like to read books a little different to all the rest, dive in and enjoy the journey - you won't be disappointed in the ride.
WOW. I wasn't expecting this. AT ALL. Alyson Santos is a phenomenal writer, and with Traitor, you get a dark, gripping, and emotional tale. From page you, Traitor steals your breath and threatens to keep it forever. Oh, the suspense, the anticipation, and the romance woven in. It's all just perfect. Heart-stopping, heartfelt, and packed with action. This one is a #mustread guys!
Alyson Santos has done it again. She always makes you feel Ike you're right there with the characters. Reading this you didn't know who was the "traitor", who could be trusted, who was the bad guys and who was the good guys. It really kept you guessing. I loved Andie and Kaleb from the start and felt no different throughout the book. Definitely worth reading.
Gah!! This book was so fricken amazeballs!!! I started it last night before bed and got halfway, forcing myself to put it down to sleep. I was reluctant to do anything but continue this unique journey but knew if I didn't do so, I'd be of no use today at work. But all I could think about all day was reading...this...book. Kaleb had me hello, okay the first meeting. Andie had me at the first sentence. What a perfect heroine she was. Strong. Resilient. Persistent. Feisty. Loyal. Kind. Selfless. I loved her spunk and the fact that she never gave up on Kaleb. All heroines should be written like her. Omg, girl crush... But really, Kaleb was the perfect broken hero we all fall hard for. The horrible shit hand he was dealt was utterly gut-wrenching. I hated witnessing the torture and sheer agony of his fate. It was cringe-worthy but only solidified my love for this selfless and protective man. Together, Andie and Kaleb were perfection. Their connection, chemistry and devotion to each other had me swooning at times. The story itself was very unique and special. It's a Dystopian type of read, which I've only read a handful of those so it was a breath of fresh air compared to all the dark romances I read. Oh this had a darkness to it, make no mistake, but it captivated me from beginning to end. I've read and loved another book by Santos and I'll continue to read her work. It's nice to read a different genre by the same author and love it just the same. Her writing is just fluid and characters are real. Brilliant. Genius. All the stars from me.
So... not at all what I was expecting. I had no idea what was coming next, no clue who to trust and no idea what was going to happen... and it was AWESOME. Above all else, this book is a romance, an epic romance actually. A love story set in a time and place where love doesn't really belong and between two people who really shouldn't fall. But they do and I spent the entire book praying that their love would survive. On top of that, the suspense in this book is intense and built with the perfect amount fear, confusion and misdirection. I had no idea who to trust, not clue who was a friend and who was an enemy. In short... I felt just like the heroine.
Speaking of which, I loved Andie. She was smart and strong and so NOT jaded by her circumstances. Watching her evolve from a victim to a true heroine was magical. And Kaleb... he was simply amazing. His story just blew me away and his character is truly a hero in every sense of the word.
Suspense is not my usual genre of preference, but Alyson is one of my authors of preference so I had to give this a try. So glad i did. The romance was perfectly framed by the rest of the story, a perfect backdrop for an epic romance.
Holy Mother of all books!!! Alyson Santos is a new to me author. Her writing is beyond fabulous. Her storyline to Traitor was beyond amazing. Her writing sucked you in within the first few pages. Traitor is unlike any book I ever read before. I assure this author has heard the last of me regarding this book!!! There aren't too many words I can use to express how good this book was. Traitor is a book about not giving up. The fight to keep going when you feel all hope is lost. The feels you get while reading this book!!! The author has a way of making you feel what the characters feel. You cringe when the character cringes. You cry when they cry. You get the drift.
100% amazing!! This book deserves way more than 5 stars!!!! brilliant job Alyson!!!
This was my first book from this author and also a genre I don't regularly read but I really enjoyed it. Andie is a refugee, Kaleb is a soldier - but not just any soldier. This is a dark and action packed read. Plenty of plot twists, gasp out loud moments and sometimes awful scenes of human nature BUT it's also definitely a love story. Kaleb is definitely a swoon worthy hero in this book and I loved watching his relationship with Andie unfold. Recommend to anyone looking for a gripping dystopian type of story.
I LOVED this book! LOVED. Dark and riveting, powerful and emotional...it made my heart race with panic, and warm with some really heartfelt, romantic moments. Traitor is a phenomenal Dystopian with a forbidden romance that will capture your heart!
The way this book starts, it grips you instantly, a sense of foreboding intensifying as you try to figure out what’s happening. You are immediately thrust into pulse-pumping action that grips you with panic. Soon you realize that Andie Sorenson has been forced out of her home and into a military-operated compound. Caught in an ugly civil war, and separated from her mother, she has no choice but to follow the rules imposed on her. When Andie is assigned to work with Lance Corporal Kaleb Novelli, she's unsure of what to expect, and this is where the story really takes off.
I absolutely, and totally fell in love with Kaleb. He has been through hell and back, yet still manages to be kind, thoughtful and comforting. The way he protects Andie, with an unyielding fierceness, well, it just had me all kinds of swooning. The forbidden angle gave the romance such a thrill factor. You could see him fighting his feelings for her, but there was so much more at stake than just their feelings. There were just so many layers dictating all of their actions, as they lived under the constant fear of punishment. And I loved that Andie was also a strong heroine. After everything she’s been through, she has reason to be weak, but she is anything but that. Her courage grows and her focus sharpens as she becomes determined to save the man she loves. Succumbing to the vulnerability of their feelings is scary when the consequences are considered.
As secrets are revealed, and the action peaks to heart-stopping levels, you can only hope for the best. In the end you will see just how one person's need for revenge can effectively alter, and damage the lives of many people. I can’t get over how much I really FELT this book, FELT the story, and the characters. I highly recommend this book! It has now been added to my favorite list.
This is a book about war and devastation, it's a book about 2 young lives being thrust together through the eyes of War, It's about lies, deceit and a possible promise of tomorrow?
I was hooked from page 1, there is death and desolation during War, there are thoughts of emptiness and sorrow, there are tales of what is beyond what we can currently see and there are actions that we must not ever question as civilians!
This is the fate waiting for Andie Sorensen and her Mother, taken from their world and placed into a new one, one with new rules, new people and new roles. One they very quickly find will challenge even the strongest of people.
One of the challenges for Andie would be her new Supervisor Lance Corporal Novelli, he is not that much older than her, he has a tough exterior but at the same time a softness that screams sadness.
What happens next is the most intense game of cat and mouse, a game where the hunter becomes the hunted and nothing is as it seems. It will have you hanging onto every page to try piece together what just may be the biggest lie of them yet. It will have theories swirling around in your head and you will not be able to stop until you know all of the answers. Can a promise of tomorrow ever be more than merely a cruel dream?
Traitor is such a fantastic and suspenseful read, these characters, their journey are all so descriptive and lifelike you will have no other option but to join their journey all be it just for a bit. It is cleverly written and beautifully insightful. Cannot recommend this book enough.
"Despite the darkness, there's hope. There's light."
What a beautiful hidden treasure 'Traitor' has turned out to be. I don't really know what I was expecting going into this book, but what I can say...it certainly wasn't this.
What Alyson has delivered is a heartbreakingly beautiful story filled with war, layers upon layers of betrayal, lies and traitors. But leaves us feeling hope, love and loyalty. A story where we don't really know who is right and who is wrong. Who we can trust and who we can't. A story which is so riveting and powerful it consumes you and your every thought from beginning to end.
I'm not going to tell you about the book. 1) I don't want to run the risk of giving anything away and 2) I want you to go in blind. I want you to just take a chance and just dive right in. Personally I think it's the best way to experience the true beauty hidden within its pages.
Alyson really has delivered with this book. It's raw and completely stripped back. The way she has focused the book on the subjects of importance, ie loyalty, trust, love..I've never really seen it in a book before. It's unique and it's very cleverly done.
I loved every minute of this book and I cannot wait to see what else Alyson brings us in the future.
When I read the blurb I knew I had to read this book. I love the writing style of this author, she knows how to draw me in from the very first page and keeps me on the edge of my seat until I finish the book.
I fell a little more in love with Kaleb the more I read. He's ALMOST too good to be true. Then you have Andie, who still sees the good when all she's been dealt lately is bad. Loved that the heroine wasn't a wimpy girl!
I didn't know who was to be trusted. There was clues throughout on who to trust and who not to trust but what if I was wrong? I mean what if they were wrong? What if they trusted the wrong person and they get caught? What then?
The author has a way of making you feel that you're in the story with the characters. I was talking to my kindle throughout the whole book. Loved that I got to see the the strength of the characters grow as the story went on.
If you like suspense at all, you'll definitely love this book. One of my favorite suspense reads of this year!!
Wow. What an emotional rollercoaster of a story, a story full of intrigue and secrets, and twists and turns. Set in a war torn country where rebels are fighting against the government forces in a battle for ownership, Andie Sorensen is taken from her home for her own safety and placed in a compound where she is given a job in administration working for Lance Corporal Kaleb Novelli. Nothing is as it appears though, there is no black and white, who are the good guys? Are any of them on the side of good? In a world of bitterness and lies, Andie soon learns that Kaleb is the epitome of goodness and selflessness. It would seem though that she has to save him from himself, but who can she trust? A beautifully written story about love, trust, devotion and hope. I was provided with an advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I truly love the depth of Alyson Santos writing, I've read a few her books previously and have been captivated by each and every one. I loved Andie and Kaleb together, there attraction was intense but also completely off limits. There so much suspense and mystery in this book and each page will leave you with questions and have you trying to figure out what's going to happen next. I'm usually good at figuring out what's going to happen but, I couldn't in this book which made me love it even more.
When I skimmed the description of this book it seemed like it would be a futuristic type plot line and I was really excited! I love those plot lines because the authors can't use their imagination and let it run wild, this book was more then I thought it would be.
Andie was stubborn but it helped her understand Kaleb throughout the book. I love how strong she was because not only she was able to stand on her own two feet, but it also made her such an amazing hero and a perfect contrast to kaleb.
Kaleb is flipping amazing. That's the best way I can put it. He's his own worst enemy but you can see the good in him right from the start. As the book goes on you can see and feel each thing he does and his beautiful soul shining through.
I love how the romance grew slowly. The attraction was there rom pretty much the start, but they because a different brand of friends that helped with them falling for each other, even thought it was a rough ride.
The plot was amazing! I felt the author really drew me in on what was going on and had me on the edge of my seat questioning every characters motive. It's so hard to talk about the plot with out spoiling it so I'll say this. It was addictive. I read it in one sitting and wouldn't put it down until it was over.
Overall; I loved it! I can't wait to read more of this world that the author has crafted. There is no indication that there will be more, but I have hope! This is my first book by this author and I can tell you that I am hooked! 5 stars #2OCCJD
I don't know if I can ever find the words to do this book justice, because even after reading it twice I find myself unable to move on!
I don't know what I expected from this book, but I am in awe, I was totally absorbed in this war within a war where both sides are fighting for control, with Andi and Kaleb just pawns in someone else's game.
Kaleb is such a strong character, an oasis of kindness and compassion, suffering due to circumstances beyond his control. Andie approaches the world with a beautiful naivety and hopefulness completely at odds with their surroundings. I loved the interaction between these two, the depth and layers of their relationship from the very moment that they met and as it progresses from friendship to so much more.
This book with rip your heart out, tear it up and trample on it, but you are left with the overwhelming feeling that love is relentless. Its an incredible story with suspense, terror, desperation, fear and the contrast of the light amongst the darkness, the power of love and hope.
I loved every single second I spent immersed in this incredible tale. Traitor is such an unbelievably well-crafted thrill ride. I don’t even know the last time I read such a mesmerizing tale of manipulation, deceit, and love.
Alyson Santos creates an atmosphere of intrigue and darkness with a touch of hope that just draws you into the pages. The story is utterly fantastic. I was hooked from the very beginning. Once I picked it up, I didn’t stop until the very last page. I read it in one sitting because I just had to know what happened next.
What I loved most is the fact that this is outside my normal reading genre. It sort of had a Hunger Games setting/vibe to it with a bit of the deceit from the Jason Bourne series. I wish there were more books that gave me the experience that Traitor did. Definitely a Top Read of 2017 for me!
****An advance reading copy was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review.****
That's it! I'm done for! Alyson Santos has brought forth another amazing story and characters that will draw you in and hold you captivate without any possibility of release. Believe me, being held captive by Traitor is well worth it. Andie is a strong leading character. I could feel every emotion as if it were happening to me. I woke up at 6am today (5/20/17) and started reading, and I could not put it down. Kaleb's situation broke my heart. Several times, I was checking my chest to make sure I wasn't actually bleeding out. I wasn't, but that's how raw this book was for me. If a book makes me feel like someone is carving my heart out, trampling it and stabbing it (all those gory details), its a winner.
DISCLAIMER: I received an ARC of this book for honest review.
It took more than a moment for me to get into the characters in this book. Once I did, I 💕, loved the idea of rebels and government fighting for power because life is never black & white. There is always that gray area. And the story gives you that and lets you decide what side to believe or not to believe. I highly recommend this book and plan to read other works by this author Alyson Santos.
This book is fantastic,it really makes you look at things differently, who is really the traitor? Who is right? Who is wrong? Brilliant storyline and characters, loved it.

This book was just surprising at every levels! Loved it!
Review to come. ************************
When I read the blurb, I didn’t know what to expect. I started it and I couldn't put it down. Suspenseful and utterly captivating, I was hooked until the end.
Alyson Santos is the kind of author who can switch genres, writing rockstar romances with interesting and developed characters from stories like Traitor, an anticipated novel with a twist of suspense and romance.
I was intrigued by this story between Andie and Kaleb, two people thrown into a war between the rebels and the civilians who were abducted, separated from their families and the military. This part was just the tip of the iceberg, as the story unfold, the issue is so much bigger than this, a war where both may not left unscathed.
The moment Andie Sorensen were taken to some compound, her life is going to change. Maybe not for the best. Separated from her mother, she had to survive everyday, living drastically. Her world may be dark but she could always see the bright side of things. Curious and too nosy for her own good, she relied on facts.
Now she became Kaleb Novelli’s assistant, helping him ordering some files. Someone who was showing kindness in these darkest times, and showing interest as an individual, but seemed like a tormented and tortured soul. A man with scars, who were hiding some secrets on his own.
Their two worlds collided and for once, there was hope found.
But is there a chance to have a life? To find happiness?
What is the purpose of this war?
As their relationship growing from friendship to something more, the more appearances were deceiving, lies and deceit were constantly being their reality, was there still a chance for hope and love? Were they just pawns, in a game that went beyond what they were just expecting.
I really enjoyed the turning events of the storyline, navigating through deep waters and where every move was calculated leading to the awful truth and purpose of this civil war.
The author knew where to lead the readers, slowly weaving her way and driving me a bit insane at times, feeling oppressed and frustrated because I was in a mission to find the truth and until the end, the suspense was still tangible.
When it came to an end, I felt like I was breathing again, feeling free. Besides the world where they came from, the message of hope and love was powerful. Even in the darkness, you’ll find the light if you fight for it.
Traitor was just something so different but at the same time very rooted in reality. Just a bit frightening.
I found it very hard to read this story with its brutality to a young "soldier". Living in a communist type of society, Andie and her mother are rounded up to live in a sterile but ruled community of sorts. They are told where to go, when and what to eat, assigned jobs and told when to sleep. Andie lucks out and is assigned office work with an attractive soldier who, at times, allows himself some compassion to leak out. His name is Kaleb and even under tortuous conditions he and Andie fall in love. But his brutal torture continues and Andie just may be his salvation.
There are futuristic vibes to this story but also there are testaments to the indomitable spirit of human beings in love and war. Bizarre story.
If you are looking for a completely different kind of read then TRAITOR is for you. Labeled Dystopian, but oh so much more. Mystery and suspense, love and heartache, black or white with no in between. Keeps you guessing till the last page!!
Twenty year old Andie Sorenson and her aging mother, have no choice but to go willingly when government forces abduct them to the “safety” of a military-operated compound. They are separated upon arrival, and not sure if they are refugees or prisoners.
All Andie knows is that she is assigned to Building 9B, which is supervised by Lance Corporal Kaleb Novelli. He also is her new boss and assigns her to be his administrative assistant. She easily falls into his eyes, his heart, and his beautiful soul. She finds Kaleb the only hope in a foreign world. She knows they have no future, but that doesn't stop her heart from committing to this man she can never have. He seems as much a prisoner here as she.
They live in a very complicated world that is hostile and unyielding. The war around them is complicated, too. It's much easier to see black or white, but neither is really the truth. Their lives are survival. He is scared and damaged, but the only person that she can trust. He is good in a world of bad. A saint among evil. Plain facts among a world of lies and deceit. A hero among traitors. Trust and love with so much hate filling their world. Involved in a war without any hope of peace.
This is one of those books I just didn't want to put down. The chapter headings fascinated me also. Besides ending with an epilogue there is an explanation for the chapter headings, too. I appreciated both. There are some rather dark parts, but overall this is a very original story. Read and Enjoy!!
