I can NOT get enough of Dominic Piper and Daniel Beckett, a private investigator he so masterfully created. Piper's easy going writing style and his amazing ability to let readers see the story through Beckett's eyes to the point that you feel as if you there with him, solving cases, makes for a super entertaining and a really unique read.

If you enjoy mysteries/thrillers, this author and his work would be right up your alley. Addictive. Well written. Disturbing. Thrilling. Dominic Piper's work brings to the table some of the best ingredients that make up the delicious dish that is Daniel Beckett series of novels.

I really enjoyed this book. I wasn't familiar with this author, so didn't really know what to expect but I was quickly drawn in by his fast-paced style and the intriguing storyline.

It's a thriller with some quite graphic scenes of violence, so it may not be suitable for the fainthearted. Having said that, there is no gratuitous violence. It's well balanced and fits with the story.

Daniel Beckett is a private investigator who is hired by a successful young fashion designer, Sara Holt, after a series of break-ins at her flat. Is she imagining it all (she has had a breakdown in the past), or is someone behind this and the recent intimidation she has suffered on the street?

The action takes place over only a couple of days. The story is full of surprises, and twists and turns. It is a real 'page-turner'. The characters are all very true-to-life and well-developed.

Daniel Beckett is a bit of a James Bond figure. It did make me wonder what he looks like because he seems to be irresistible to women! He meets a few women in the course of the story who immediately fall for his charms. There is quite a lot of sex in the story but it's not erotica; there's no superfluous detail involved.

The story moves along quickly and the author does a great job in what must have been a hard novel to write as it's a complex chain of events.

A skillfully devised plot, very well written, entertaining, and full of action. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes to get lost in a story.

Wow – an Adrenalin Rush from Start to Finish!
There are some books that move you, some that affect you and then there are some that shake the living daylights out of you. Mr Piper’s latest tome Death is the New Black is most definitely the latter. Daniel Beckett, Private Investigator and whole lot more besides, has been brought back and he’s in spectacular form. He’s on another case, psychological harassment of top London designer, Sara Holt. A lovely young lady whose stardom will sky-rocket if she pulls off a simultaneous fashion show in New York and Milan. A first for the fashion industry, and one guaranteed to get the suits interested in backing her own designer brand. From the outset, Beckett feels there’s something else going on with this case. His sixth sense knows it, but he can’t place what it is. When the denouement finally arrives it’s like a slap in the face with a rather large branding iron. You’re disoriented, shattered and winded as much as Beckett is. What follows from this moment is possibly the weirdest thing I’ve read in a while, but so captivating that I now have red rimmed eyes through complete lack of sleep. I do not engage in spoilers, so you’ll just have to read this fabulous book, but what I will say (using an old spy adage) ‘What you think you know you don’t!’

I do enjoy the way Mr Piper’s ploughs the depths of Beckett’s mind, and what a murky, magnificent minefield of perverted desires that place is. Even during a high speed chase up a narrow one-way street in London, Beckett feels the suspenders of a woman kind (or crazy) enough to allow him the use of her Audi R8, and his mind flips to thoughts of horizontal jogging. You have to read it to believe it! Perhaps, that’s the amazing part about Mr Piper’s writing, he makes it, however insane, seem believable. The natural, conversational first person style with Beckett constantly in the frame, makes for an incredibly fun read. Beckett is a wonderful creation, despite his little foibles and predilection towards the fairer sex, you can’t help but adore him (as all the women he encounters do). He has an arrogance, a ‘don’t mess with me’ attitude, but he also carries a casualness about him, and an unflappable air when assessing tight situations, and you just feel that he’s been in much worse places. Beckett’s sharp tongue of wit lands him in trouble constantly, but it’s as if he is living life at light speed, and he doesn’t care, as long as he says what he needs to say whilst he’s still alive. His musings and observation are on the button, and are often hysterical. His skills, intelligence and outlook on life makes him a formidable opponent, but enemies don’t realise until it is too late. Beckett is by far one of the most intriguing characters I have discovered. He is an intensely likable (even lovable) character, and every time I encounter him (in Kiss Me When I’m Dead he was a deadly joy to behold) I know I’m in for the ride of my life! If you haven’t met Beckett yet, you should soon, I guarantee it is one appointment you can’t afford to miss!

Seriously Dominic Piper is my newest favorite author. I loved Kiss Me When I'm Dead and Death Is The New Black did not disappoint as a follow up.

His ability to draw you into the story right from the get go is amazing. His main character Daniel Beckett who is a private detective is witty and great at his job. He's a lady's man as well. The story is never dull and while you might worry that one case (or story) will be similar to the next, they were both quite different yet still had the same main character and same writing style. Just completely different cases for him to solve.

I truly think these books could easily be turned into a television series and they would be a hit. You heard that here first lol.

I'm definitely looking forward to his next release.

Btw I don't believe these have to be read in order. They pretty much stand alone.

Not surprisingly, Piper has done again with his second book in the tales of Daniel Beckett, PI, as the main character is once again thrown into a case that is as absorbing as it is astonishing.

I am in love with Piper's writing as he is able to maintain the integrity of his main character without rewriting the same story over again. He is a true writing talent with an imagination that only a few are lucky enough to possess. And, of course, with imagination brings true entertainment unlike most. With so many "hold your breath moments" it is my opinion that this mystery could easily be considered an action-adventure.

Now I sit waiting patiently for Book 3 as this is one heck of an amazing adventure.

Death Is The New Black had me hooked from the opening scene. I knew at that moment that this was my kind of novel. I wasn't disappointed.
Piper's writing style is brilliant. Filled with action, witty dialogue, and a well-paced plot, the tone of the book captivates the imagination and is highly enjoyable to read.
Daniel Beckett experiences situations, and his inner dialogue immediately immerses the reader in the scene. Throughout the story, the villains are vile, and Beckett is an intriguing, charismatic character who sees more 'action' than James Bond, and is absolutely delicious.
This is the third novel in the series I've read, and like the first two, it doesn't disappoint. Can't wait to see what he's up to in the next novel.

PI Daniel Beckett gets plenty of action. Plenty of action on the streets, where his world-class tradecraft, rapid reflexes and hard-assed combat skills typically leave his opponents in immediate need of A&E or the morgue. Plenty of action between the sheets because fabulously gorgeous women tend to do that swooning thing when he turns up the charm. He almost equally addicted to sex and violence, and there’s plenty of both in this smart, savvy, streetwise thriller.

Author Dominic Piper writes crisp prose that fair rattles with alacrity. A vulnerable, attractive (inevitably) female designer thinks she’s being stalked but has no proof. Hard man Beckett takes the case to watch her tail (he does a lot of that and a lot more besides). Things rapidly escalate through brawling, beatings, boffing, and various dead bodies to dispose of.

The result is an outright romp for the first half of the tale. Then there’s a frustrating change of pace when the Implausible Plot Coincidence comes to light and a metric tonne of back story has to be delivered in a lumbering chapter of exposition. This section plods somewhat – but once the actors are established in their places for the final set piece the narrative then gallops to a brilliantly constructed impossible-escape with all the loose ends neatly tied up in a blood-soaked bow.

If you don’t think sex belongs in thrillers, then you’re unlikely to enjoy this one because Beckett’s carnal impulses are a cornerstone of his character. We learn little about his physical appearance, but there’s an awful lot of space dedicated to the voluptuous curves of his companions… So, yes, he’s more than a little bit Bond, mixed with an awful lot of Bourne, but with the style of The Saint – delivering dialogue straight from Tarantino’s typewriter.

Kudos where it’s due, too: Piper writes convincingly of a very real central London, one where the sidestreets around Covent Garden smell somewhat sour in the early mornings. I’ve walked the routes he describes and know the ebb and flow of commuters and tourists, and he’s absolutely nailed their authentic atmosphere.

DITNB doesn’t take itself too seriously but it does deliver a seriously entertaining mystery-thriller; an outstanding car chase through London’s west end, and an engaging central character who’d make an entertaining date.

Dominic Piper’s hero, private detective Daniel Beckett, is the person every man wants to be. He's a rip-roaring character who’s quirky enough to be interesting and tough enough to crack any situation. He’s a clever creation: a modest ‘babe magnet’, who cannot help attracting gorgeous sexy women, with a murky past that you suspect may be semi military, but you’re never told exactly what, so it keeps things intriguing. With his paranoia about being followed to his central London flat, the Nightingale (squeaky) floor to give advance warning of intruders, his toughness in adversity and his analytical problem-solving approach, and his fearlessness, you find that you’d like to be his friend, but would really hate to be his enemy.

In this engaging story, Daniel is summoned by an extremely attractive young fashion designer, who is being followed and harassed, but she wants things resolved quietly and tactfully. Very charming, and apparently without an enemy in the world, she is clueless as to who could be trying to ruffle her splendid lifestyle and why, and she’s found that the local police won’t take the situation seriously. Daniel is quickly beguiled by the lady's gorgeous assistant, who’s been instructed to give him all the help he needs. Daniel promptly proceeds to seduce a variety of women, tackle the bad guys, solve some mysterious problems, and he ultimately cracks the case in a particularly spectacular manner. I can tell you there are plenty of surprises along the way.

There’s plenty of action, some scary situations, and lots of sex, but none of the latter is explicit or gratuitous: just enough to make you think: ‘What a lucky guy’.

All in all it’s a very entertaining easy read that would certainly translate well to a film or a TV series.

Let’s hope there are plenty more Daniel Becket mysteries – I’m certainly a top fan.

If you are looking for a fast-paced thriller, I highly recommend Death is the New Black by Dominic Piper. This book features a lascivious sleuth, the fashion industry, sexy women, a high-speed chase, physical combat, dynamic characters, and lots of plot twist.

Dominic Piper superbly uses the first person to flesh out his main character. Within a few paragraphs, I start to understand Daniel Beckett, the thirty-something Private Detective. At first, I was put off with the way he sees women as sexual beings, but then I realized that he is appreciative of the female form and not derogatory. For some reason, women are attractive to Becket as much as he is to them...every man's fantasy.

After the police fail to help her, Sara Holt hires Daniel Becket to investigate street-harassment and possible break-ins into her home. Then, the attacks escalate. Can Daniel Becket save Sara Holt? Will he be too distracted by the women who seem to fall all over him? Will his sassy retorts get him into difficult to get out of situations?

Daniel Becket is resourceful, but also lucky. He can be cold, calculating, and deliberate—never to be underestimated.

The sex and violence are suggestive, not graphic. If reading these make you uncomfortable, find another book. Otherwise, hold on to your hat: you're in for a fast ride.

I wanted to take two stars off, firstly because I was really starting to get annoyed with all the women, without exception (not counting the femme fatale's wheelchair-bound grandmother who sort of reminded me of Tio from Breaking Bad) being described as flawless wet dreams eager to bang the protagonist(*), and secondly because the author uses a rather nonstandard way of punctuating quotations that are supposed to be within a sentece. However, once the plot really gets going, the book becomes such a non-stop action fest that you really have to read through to see what happens. As in the previous book, the plot is logically sound and features grotesque and creepy villains, who would work great on screen.

Besides the protagonist, only one character from the previous book makes a brief appearance, and we come no closer to learning anything from Beckett's past. This is not ideal for serialized fiction, at least for me. I prefer to have more continuity. I wonder if there will be more books in the series.

(*) The wish-fulfillment element is strong with these books. Whereas the women are smart, beautiful and lusty, the male characters that are not Beckett tend to be ugly, sweaty and disposable goons or depraved kingpins (there are some decent guys, but they are mostly background characters).

I loved Dominic's first book, Kiss Me When I'm Dead, and asked him to let me know when he released his second book. Needless to say, I also loved Death is the New Black. True to form, this book is fast-paced with plenty of action and entertainment. Dominic's writing is very addictive. You want to read more and I couldn't wait to see what mischief Daniel would find himself in next.

Just needs good theme music, think 007

James Bond has nothing on Daniel Beckett. Classic thriller mystery where every dame is hot and sexy, the hero beds every one of them and the action is non-stop. Plenty of twists and turns to keep you turning pages. Lost one star because there were enough typos to be annoying and the hero was too Bond.

This book was so much fun to read! Love the writing. That classic film noir feel! Fast-paced, lots of witty dialogue, and more femme fatales than you can shake a stick at. Detecive Daniel Beckett meets so many attractive women, and they ALL want to sleep with him! What a lucky guy lol. You'll be a lucky girl if you read this.

Misogynistic Twattle.

Lead character is unbelievable. At turns incapable of sticking to business when any woman is around. All of whom he has, will or Is schrupping. ExceptING ONLY the 90 plus toothless villian's evil minded hag of a mother. Supposedly his mysterious past makes him some kind of martial arts master and counterintelligence guru to boot. He considers himself a mental giant who can manipulate anyone into making stupid mistakes. This is the same genius loses his train of thought around every woman he encounters lusting after each and becoming tongue tied. Only one of the 6 women seems even a little bit put out by the existence of the others. It is as if no female can resist him. What utter schlock.
He doesn't solve the case even. The villianesse and her criminal kingpin father do the denouement in turns. Do Not buy this book unless you adore drivel.

Fantastic, fast-paced pulp fiction noir. The story hustles along at a throat pounding pace. Private Detective Daniel Beckett rarely misses a beat, but when he does, the outcome is catastrophic. Masterful, entertaining storytelling. Can’t wait to read the next one.

I want to shout about this series from the rooftops. It's a shame standing on rooftops makes me so nervous.

I loved Dominic Piper's first book, Kiss Me When I'm Dead. I started reading the second book before I wrote the review for the first. One thing I NEVER do is call a book early. However, for some reason (most likely my improved detective skills following the reading of the first book), I said this: "It looks as though it's going to be another brilliant piece of work from Dominic Piper." And I'm pleased to report that I was correct.
Being right is so fabulous.

There's a lot to love about the Daniel Beckett PI Series books.
1) Writing style
Dominic Piper's writing style is utterly captivating and nothing short of brilliant. The wit is dry—very dry. And it gets me every time.

2) The protagonist
At the conclusion of book two, Daniel Beckett is still somewhat of a mystery. The author is cleverly revealing the bare minimum about the character. As a result, Beckett is one of the most intriguing characters I have ever read. One thing we do know for sure: Daniel Beckett is a total badass. I mean that in the best possible way. You'll need to read the book to truly appreciate the level of this guy's badassedness.

3) Drama and action
Death is the New Black, is action packed and full of drama. This author knows how to do thrilling and suspenseful.
In one part of the story, I was so caught up in the unfolding drama that I yelled out loud in the presence of other people. I'll try to explain, but it'll be difficult because I don't do spoilers. Here goes. I was fervently wishing for Beckett to do…this particular thing…to one of the bad guys. I knew it couldn't happen because it would be extremely bad for the protagonist's health. (Read-dude's gonna die if this goes down.) But then it did actually happen in a different way and I yelled, "OMG, take that (insert bad person's name here)!" And I got some funny looks. Eh, whatever, things like this are bound to happen while reading a Dominic Piper book.

4) The plot, secondary characters, and all of the other things
Full marks for all of them.

Now, some people might be offended by Beckett's "womanizing ways." My advice—for whatever it's worth—is just go with it. Enjoy the ride. Women find Beckett attractive. He likes them back. Everyone's happy. No one gets hurt. Except for the bad guys. They get hurt. Real bad. But seriously, there are things about Beckett's thoughts on women that I feel the need to point out. One is that he finds something to appreciate in each of the women he meets. I'm giving him brownie points for that. Also, no matter the women's career choices, life choices, vices/sexual proclivities etc., Beckett never judges them. Ever. A large number of brownie points right there.

So, I recommend that you read this book. I absolutely loved it and hope you will, too.

I'm going to go out on a limb and make another prediction. I think the next book will totally blow my mind.

It's just a feeling I have deep in my bones.

*looks askance*

*fidgets*

Okay, full disclosure—I've read the next book in its entirety. And…IT TOTALLY BLEW MY MIND!!!
I'm not telling you why, yet. You'll have to wait for my Femme Fatale review. Being kept in suspense might be good for you. Just think of it as training for reading Piper's next book. You're gonna need it.
You really, really are.

Death Is The New Black in the second book from Dominic Piper I've read, and it's as good as his first, Kiss Me When I'm Dead. The same P.I., Daniel Beckett, and written in the first person for immediate effect as was the first. The author and other reviewers describe what's going on in the story so I won't repeat the synopsis. I will say that I loved this book. The author comes up with twists and turns, and you think you have a handle on what's going on an why, and then everything changes. I will say that Beckett regularly gets himself stuck in situations, and I actually stopped reading to try and figure out how the heck he'd get out of this fix, but I'm was never right. But the ending! I didn't stop reading that time to figure out how he'd make his escape, I just let the author weave his tale. And what a tale it was! Clues abound, but I dare anyone to figure it all out ahead of time. Loved, loved, loved this! Looking forward to his third, which I already have, waiting for me to sit and read.

Book two of the Daniel Beckett series really amps up the intrigue. This time the London-based private investigator winds up smack dab in the middle of the cut-throat world of high fashion bombarded by beautiful women and sadistic thugs.

Dominic Piper still keeps Beckett a man of mystery by providing the only clues to figuring him out through his actions, not unlike Rick Blaine in Casablanca. He has ninja fighting skills, Houdini’s dexterity, and MI6 expertise. All with a devilishly clever deadpan wit.

The twists and turns and well-developed characters lead seamlessly to the big reveal. Piper pulls it all together masterfully, while sneaking in subtle cliffhangers leaving the reader both satisfied and wanting more.

Onward to Book 3, Femme Fatale!

This is the second book by Dominic Piper featuring the London-based private investigator Daniel Beckett and it's just as amazing as the first, Kiss Me When I'm Dead. Beckett is hired by a fashion designer who is having her life turned upside-down by a series of scary and aggressive street encounters and possible break-ins to her London flat. The only problem is that no one witnesses these encounters and the police can't find any evidence of burglary. She's beginning to doubt her own sanity, but then hires Beckett, whose intelligent and concentrated take on the evidence quickly brings results. But then things take a bad and unexpected turn. This is a fantastically well-written mystery with a tantalisingly erotic edge and characters so well and convincingly described (especially the women) that you really feel you could almost reach out and touch them. Beckett, however, continues to be an enigma, and the more you find out about him (through his knowledge, amorality and abilities), the more out of reach he becomes. This is the mark of a great fictitious character. I'd recommend this excellent book wholeheartedly.

Another explosive and sexy slice of superlative modern crime fiction from Dominic Piper. This time, a top fashion designer requires the services of tough, mysterious, and charming private investigator Daniel Beckett. Her life and work is being disrupted by a series of nasty episodes. Scary guys insult her, follow her, and jostle her on the street. Someone is breaking into her flat and moving things around, but not stealing anything (which is pretty creepy). The police find all of this amusing and think it's in her head. But Beckett looks at cases like this in a different way. Once, again, there's a strong erotic undercurrent in this book and bad guys you'd like to push off a cliff. Loved Sara Holt, the designer, and the OTT sensuality of her assistant Isolda. There's also an insane car chase, which I hadn't expected, during which Beckett and the lady whose car he's co-opted exchange mega-flirtation while screaming up a busy one-way street the wrong way. The whole book is a blast, and one I'd wholeheartedly recommend, whether you like thrillers or not.

This was a fast-paced adventure with a deep dive into the fashion world right out of the gate!

A successful young fashion designer hires Private Investigator Daniel Beckett to investigate some strange incidents happening in her personal life that she can't explain.

Beckett takes on the challenge and goes undercover and under many suspects' covers.

The gaslighting theme comes to mind when Beckett discovers someone close to the young designer might not be as supportive as they appear.

Beckett finds himself in one sticky situation after another, and with his MacGyver-like mind, he manages to extract himself by creating windows and doors out of the ether.

His clever wit gets him into and out of trouble, unable to choose when being flippant could bring him closer to his and his client's demise!

I found this book to be a high-speed read, very clever, and always in anticipation of how Beckett would save himself and his client from the next mishap!

Book two in the series did not disappoint. Daniel Beckett, the womanising PI, takes on a strange case that may not really be a case at all. Is Sara imagining her stalkers? Is his eye for beautiful women leading him astray? As the questions are answered (some of which I had guessed quite quickly) the stakes get higher and higher and the action goes into overdrive. I throughly enjoyed this slightly eccentric world where all the women are beautiful and the men are, for the most part, not.

All of the hype that is in the blurb of the Dominic Piper books absolutely rings of the truth. Fast paced, sexy with wonderful twists and turns. There are only three in the series which is way too few. I am just about to begin the third novel, Femme Fatale, so perhaps I will find out why. An excellent read.

This is the second book by the author that I’ve read. Can’t put them down. Action from start to finish. Guns, girls, dangerous people and all in the heart of London.
