Cheryl Sterling is an American author of several paranormal and contemporary romance novels and short stories. Her first novel, What Do You Say to a Naked Elf?, was a finalist in the TARA contest and was later sold to Leisure Books, an imprint of Dorchester Publishing. Cheryl is a co-founder and past president of Grand Rapids Region Writers Group in Grand Rapids, MI. She has conducted several workshops that focused on the writing craft and co-chaired their first “I’ve Always Wanted to Write a Book” regional conference. In her spare time (she’s retired, so there’s that, but she writes a lot, so, never mind), she reads. All genres (except suspense and horror because she reserves the right to mess with readers’ minds). She loves history (lots of ideas to steal borrow), sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, regencies (who knew so many eligible Dukes were around?), anything Doctor Who, and/or quantum entanglement. Her passion is learning and improving her craft, but mostly, she is a teacher. Cheryl currently lives in Phoenix with her husband and their cat, Coco Xena.

Writing Tools, 26 Tips on How to Improve Your Writing by Cheryl Sterling is a quick guide for the modern writer. The title may be a bit deceptive, since the guide doesn’t just cover ways to improve our writing. A good part of the book is devoted to how to promote your writing too. But as the author points out, in today publishing world, an author must be a master of the storytelling craft and be adequately apt at promoting their own work too. Clearly intended for the newbee more than the veteran author, this is a short book, but packed of into. And it’s true, it might be a bit essential, since the space didn’t allow to get too much into details, but there’s a lot of introduction, so that we know what’s out there, what are the possibilities, and we can start to explore from here. But you will also find actual directions, especially in a few of the sections. I particularly liked the one about the hero journey, which gets in great details and helps shape the structure of a story from scratches. A fun, quick guide to keep at hand.
At a stage in my life where I want to step up my writing game, this comes like an answered prayer. I mean who doesn´t want to learn from someone who has been there and done that (writing in this case) for 18 long years!
I do plan to read each and every single ebook listed in this year´s Ebook Carnival by Blogchatter. And, I started with what caught my interest and benefit me the most at this point of time.
Based on that criteria, I picked ´Writing Tools´ by Cheryl Sterling and I am so glad that I started my e-book reading marathon with this one. What a great start it has been, indeed!
The book is extremely informative and educative for new writers like me who are keen to take their writings to the next level. There were so many Á-Ha! Eureka´ moments for me all throughout this book. Tons and tons of tips and recommendations that I really need to start incorporating right away. For a newbie author like me, it really means a lot when you have an established author who is a veteran at the game, handhold you and makes you realize your own shortcomings and all the opportunities that lie in the waiting.
What would I do without you, Cheryl Sterling? I mean really! You just lit a candle in the dark and showed me a path that I thought never existed before. I love you just for that!
Coming to the book, it is written in an informal conversational tone. It´s almost like the author is speaking to you face-to-face in a room. It´s is that intimate and intricate. So, all kudos to the author for making that effort to get upfront and personal with her readers.
I personally love this book and would rate it higher than 5 because I loved it that much. Why? Both for its noble and honest intent as well as its personal style. Apart from being highly informative and practical, the book has a huge personal touch and that´s what makes this one endearingly special to me.
The author has collected real important topics for aspiring writers. This book can be kept as a pocket guide for newbies. It has all the necessary points for non fiction writers and fiction writers. And the most important of all to promote your published work. The author has gathered almost all social platforms for promotions. She tells us how the promotions are equally important as drafting the post. She has shown tremendous effort in her book to support writers. The author is sharing her experience of 18 years in the writing industry.
There is not a single low point in the book except that it is written in Alphabetical order. Because of this order, the posts are inter mixed. Some posts are for fiction writers and the others in between are for non fiction writers. The social platforms also come according to their starting letters.
But as written earlier, this book is a compilation of 26 posts of AtoZChallenge, so it has to be this way only. The author has done true justice to her work.
The ebook is full of tips for first time/amateur authors. Instead of reading this ebook at one go, I read it as a step by step manual following as many steps as possible to establish the online presence of me & my ebook. The book gives some very simple yet effective steps to earn those brownie points in marketing a book.
The author has given some very useful tools such as BoardBooster, Canva, Draft2Digital to do various things right from designing a cover image to taking the book to the larger audience. I had a complete marketing plan when I finished reading it.
Overall this book is a must read for every budding author.
