They'd been completely wrong for each other – in all but one way.

USA Today bestselling author Margaret Watson is a two-time RITA Finalist with thirty books in print for Harlequin and Silhouette and many other award-winning romantic suspense novels.
When not writing, Margaret practices veterinary medicine in the Chicago area.
Caine is shocked when he is told by his boss to go and get his daughter from San Rafael since the country seems to be in unrest. Caine dated Lexie for a month but he didn't like her life of partying and doing nothing and then he was called away on assignment and captured so his plan of talking to her never materialized but when he makes his way to her, he finds a very different Lexie, one who tells him she trained to be a nurse five years ago and loves where she is and helping out people and also finds out to his shock, she gave birth to his daughter Ana, who is two months old.
Lexie is shocked to see Caine, she is over him and he represents her old life where she was under her father's thumb and did nothing worth-while. She also feels she never knew him since he never opened up and is just like her father, controlling and she does not want to go back to her old life but when she finds out that they are in danger, all three of them make a trek through the forest for safety.
Their journey is filled with danger, exhaustion and the fact that Lexie is a nursing mother but through all of that Lexie showed great strength once she came to terms with the fact that she had to leave the place she had finally found peace. She is also hurt by the fact that Caine doesn't seem to want to acknowledge their daughter and tries to keep distance by referring to her as kid.
We of course know that he has his own reasons related to his father and ex-wife but the revelations come slowly in the book. Both of these see a side to each other they never saw in civilization since they are now operating on instincts of survival.
The chemistry between them cannot be denied but it is the opening up of each others inner thoughts and feelings that take time and Caine is the quintessential strong, silent hero who appears unruffled.
I enjoyed the book but you have to overlook many common sense stuff like Ana is a just two months old and never even once cried.
The first book in the Into The Storm series by Margaret Watson. Caine O'Roarke was sent to San Rafael to rescue Lexie Hollister by her father. Lexie is reluctant to leave and doesn't believe she is in danger. But she soon realizes that she is and Caine and Lexie, along with their daughter, Ana, head off into the jungle.
So this goes into the Reunion and Secret Baby Plot. It was a decent read. Hard to believe at times that a baby would be so good and not cry, with being hot and miserable in the jungle and all. I would read this author again.
This was a really (surprisingly) good story and was very engaging. I liked both Lexie and Caine and liked seeing them come together.
Lexie is a nurse in a remote mountain town in south or central America. She is the daughter of a major player in the CIA and always found it hard to deal with her father's controlling personality. Lexie took nursing classes but after some issues, she transitioned into a more superficial lifestyle...which is the time period in which she meets Caine.
Caine is a CIA operative that is retiring. Caine used to be in the military but had issues with the bad intelligence that caused his team to experience losses. He moved to the CIA and mostly lived a lonely life due to his job and a messed up history.
The story starts with a bit of a flashback of Caine and then moves into him talking to Lexie's father as he's asking Caine to go get her from a foreign country, guilting him into it because of the month long relationship they were in that ended 11 months before. Caine doesn't understand why Lexie is there but agrees to go. We know from the beginning that Caine was the one that left Lexie and she never knew why but we don't find out the whole story until much later. When Caine gets to the mountain town to "rescue her" she's reluctant to go home and doesn't believe that the local rebel leader is coming after her. Caine's able to convince her that she's in danger and also finds out he has a daughter.
Caine's background isn't great and he's convinced himself that he's no good for a wife or kids, so Caine holds himself apart from Lexie and Ana (their daughter) even though he doesn't really want to. They end up spending more time together than expected because the rebel leader makes escaping the area difficult and they have to trek through the jungle. With the extra time together, Lexie and Caine do come back together but there's some drama about whether they can be together long-term. Things do work out well though and Lexie, Ana and Caine make it to safety and work their relationship out, ending the story starting a HEA together.
This was a really good story. Lexie was a very good heroine and I liked her a lot. Caine was a good guy and his initial reluctance was mostly understandable. My only real complaint is that Ana's good behavior on their trek through the jungle seemed a bit too good to be true at times. Still she's only a few months old so I guess it's not too out of bounds that she's sleeping most of the time. Outside of that, I was really pleased with the story. It was really good and engaging and I liked the characters and wanted things to work out for them so I'd recommend it. :)
To Save His Child by Margaret Watson Into the Storm #1
Caine O’Rourke and Lexie Hollister were a couple eleven months before this book begins. For a number of reasons their relationship abruptly ended only to be given a second chance when Lexie’s father requests that Caine bring her home to safety from a country falling into war. Caine agrees, for his own reasons, and finds that the past eleven months have changed Lexie in many ways. The chemistry is still there and Lexie has taken on new responsibilities and has matured a great deal. But whether or not they can have a HEA ending will depend on getting Lexie and her two month old baby through the jungle to safety without being captured by El Cuchillo.
I really enjoyed this story. I kept thinking about insects and how they devour me and hoped they had insect repellent, for instance or wondered about just how many calories one would need to sustain a nursing mother on horribly long treks through dense jungle heat BUT those things are really not the issue in a second chance love story…not really…it is about reconnecting and caring and loving and this couple had to regain trust and find a way forward.
I enjoy this author’s books and believe this reedit from her 1996 version printed by Harlequin is great. I have not read that version but did find this one to be relevant and current and definitely a fun read.
Thank you to the author for the copy to read and review. This is my honest opinion.
Caine O'Roarke and party-girl Lexie Hollister have a month-long tryst that ends abruptly when Caine is called away on business, leaves in the night and with no word to Lexie. Lexie, obviously scorned and hurt, flees to the little village of Santa Ysabel in San Rafael. Once in Santa Ysabel, Lexie discovers she is pregnant, and get this, to repay the kindness of the villagers, she puts her nursing degree to use by vaccinating the locals and providing limited medical care.
Meanwhile, eleven months later, Caine returns from an assignment and is asked by Lexie's father to go to San Rafel and bring his wayward daughter back to Washington. Because of how things ended between them, Caine is a bit reluctant to go retrieve Lexie but puts it behind him and decides to go get her.
Unbeknownst to Lexie, she and her daughter Ana, are in harm's way in San Rafael as it seems the political situation in San Rafael is dangerously unstable and the brutal El Cuchillo (the knife) wants all Americans out of the country--except for Lexie, he wants to keep her in the country at all costs. To say Caine is stunned that Lexie is a nurse-a far cry from her wild ways in Washington--but that he is the father of "the kid" aka, Ana.
Caine's plan is to smuggle Lexie and Ana out of Santa Ysabel to the city of Limores via the jungle--yes, the jungle, with a BABY! Desperate times call for desperate measures...
An uninteresting couple of days in the jungle with a lot of breastfeeding, snakes, heat (jungle and human) and murmurings of El Cuchillo but no actual sighting or interaction---boring! Inevitably Caine, Lexie, and Ana escape the jungle and San Rafael to arrive unharmed back in Washington only to realize they love each other and can be a family...
Shockingly, back in Washington El Cuchillo's men catch up to the trio and for about two minutes, there is a flash of action when Tim takes one for the team.
I had hoped this free Amazon read would be an action-adventure however it is devoid of action and the romance is so-so. Proceed with caution.
To Save A Child is book 1 in the Into The Storm series by Margaret Watson. This book is a fast paced romance that will pull at your heart-strings while keeping you on the edge of your seat. I know it did for me. I only planned on reading a couple of chapters and before I knew it, I had read the entire book in one sitting.
I really am not a fan of the surprise baby plotlines that are used in some romance novels. Mainly because there are excuses made up by the mother about why they never told the father about the baby. But in To Save A Child, there are no excuses. Even if Lexie wanted to tell Caine, she wouldn’t have been able to find him. He had left her sleeping in his bed and went on a mission that went south (want to know exactly what happened….you need to read the book). Lexie ran to San Rafael, found out she was pregnant and had her baby there. There was no communication between them until he turned up at her house and told her that she was in danger and that she needed to leave.
At first, I thought Lexie was a bit of a brat. Caine is in her house, telling her “You are in danger, you have to go” and she flat-out told him no, she needed to wait for the vaccines. I kinda sat on my couch, shaking my head and I also kinda wanted to reach through the book, smack her and say “If someone says you have to go, you are in danger, you GO.” Even when Caine found out about Ana and stressed that Ana was in danger too, she was like “Let’s wait until after the vaccines come“. Again, it was a repeat of my above statement. It wasn’t until they were in the jungle that my opinion of her changed.
Caine had been dealt a serious blow when he found out about Ana and I think he handled it fairly well. He was still focused on getting Lexie and Ana to safety. I also felt awful for him because of his past. Because of that, he felt he couldn’t be a good father to any child and he was afraid to bond with Ana. He showed, with all of his actions while they were trekking through the jungle, that he was a good father and protector. I just wish that he saw that before the end of the book. I know that Lexie did.
Speaking of that trek, it was perilous and had so much danger. Caine set a grueling pace and didn’t allow for much stopping, only stopping long enough to let Lexie nurse Ana and change her diaper. Honestly, if that were me doing that, I don’t think that I would have made it. Even when they got to the city, they still had to escape and how they did it was amazing.
The sex scenes were very hot. I had read a lot of books where they had been a little graphic and To Save A Child struck just the right balance. Hot but not dirty and I loved it.
The end of the book was pretty typical and was an HEA. Over all a great book that you could read while at the beach or by the pool.
How many stars will I give To Save A Child: 4
Why: Great plot, great sex, and good characters
Will I reread: Yes
Will I recommend to family and friends: Yes
Age range: Adult
Why: Sex, language, and some mild violence

To Save His Child is one of Margaret Watson’s early books and was originally published for Silhouette Intimate Moments. However, Ms. Watson has re-edited this novel in order to update it as well as to make improvements that reflect her increased writing experience.
This novel is an exciting romantic suspense novel with lots of adventure and intrigue. There are so many twists and turns that, even though I knew there would be a happy ending, I often wondered how we were going to get there.
Caine and Lexi are wonderful, three-dimensional characters. It is interesting to watch them go through many changes throughout this story. Caine is a former SEAL who currently works for Lexi’s father. Lexi and Caine had a past relationship which ended when Caine, one morning, left her sleeping in his bed and never came back.
Lexi was originally a party girl who lived with her father. When she appears in the story, she is an independent woman who manages to travel through the desert carrying her two month old baby without complaining or whining about her fatigue, pain and hunger.
Caine finds out that Lexi’s baby is also his. Unfortunately, he refuses to acknowledge her because he doesn’t believe himself to be “daddy material.” I love Caine because underneath his gruff exterior is a gentle, caring man who wants to love his daughter.
When Caine was given the job of rescuing his boss’s daughter from the small village of San Rafael because of a civil war, he didn’t hesitate to go. He had dated Lexie about a year earlier so he knew the girl well. She only cared about herself and having a good time. He couldn’t imagine what she was doing in a remote Mexican village. When he found her, she was nothing like the woman he had known. She was now a nurse, responsible for an entire village. And she had a baby. When she learned that Caine had come to take her home, she didn’t want to leave her friends/patients. This was a bit hard to swallow. Couldn’t she understand that she would be killed if she stayed? And wasn’t getting her baby to safety more important and the people in the village?
The trek through the jungle was tense. Caine’s skills at evading the men who were after Lexie was impressive. Especially when he had the baby to worry about, too. Somehow Lexie kept her quiet by feeding her often. I can’t believe that would really work. Babies cry for other reasons and not just because they are hungry or need to be changed. But this baby didn’t cry – ever. Caine believed he wouldn’t make a good father so he wouldn’t even look at the child. When he couldn’t put it off any longer and held her, he melted when she smiled at him. I loved Caine's reaction. Making their journey even harder was Lexie and Caine’s misunderstanding about how they felt about each other. It made me feel sorry for them. 3.5 stars
Caine arrives just in time to sneak a reluctant Lexie away from a rebel. But she comes with added baggage: a baby. This story had great descriptive passages and internal struggles, but it had a few flaws that made it harder to fully invest in the story.
1: The characters’ previous affair sounded like it was completely based on sex (I got the impression Caine didn’t even like the person Lexie was), so there was a long way to go for me to believe they could love each other. To the author’s credit, she did a good job of building that aspect during their ordeal.
2: There were no insects or mosquitoes in this particular jungle, and I’m sorry, but sex on the ground in a hot jungle (and when you’re injured to boot) does not sound appealing. Even so, the author did manage some decent sex scenes.
3: I had a hard time believing a baby would *never* cry; I’ve had two and even when you’re at the top of your game as a parent (hard when you’re bleary-eyed from lack of sleep), there’s diaper rash, and upset tummies, too hot, etc.
4: The end felt abrupt, and the item the rebels were after seemed like a weak reason for the massive (wo)man hunt. Oh, and I wanted more information about what Caine went through those months he couldn’t come back to Lexie.
When Caine's boss sends him to get his daughter out of an increasingly hostile country, Caine is expecting to find the party girl he walked out on. What he found instead was Lexie, a nurse taking care of the townsfolk. Stunned by the change in her, he's also in for another shock when he discovers Lexie has a two month old daughter. Doing the math, he quickly realizes she's his. When danger comes knocking on Lexie's door, the trio set out on a perilous journey through the jungle.
To Save His Child is a non-stop action packed book. Caine and Lexie, with baby Ana in tow, are constantly on the move to avoid their enemies. Along the way, the pair open up with each other more than they ever had before, learning who they truly were. I loved seeing how Caine, who didn't believe he was father material, slowly came around to the idea that maybe he could be a father to Ana.
It was a little hard to believe that a two month old didn't cry the entire time they were trudging through the jungle, but it was easy to overlook that when there was so many other things going on.
If you like suspense mixed in with your romance or are a fan of the second chances trope, you should give this one a read.
**A copy was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review**
I started the book skeptical that I would enjoy it, a newish mom and a baby racing thru the jungle with bad guys looking for them, I thought it would sputter thru, but it had the baby element that I love to read about, so I jumped in and hoped for the best. I was rewarded. The story line keeps you going and doesn't lag so you start to wonder if the book will ever finish. The interaction between the two characters and how they come to see the other person and how the 'hero' comes to see his baby girl is believable in how it comes about and the pace it comes about. I thought the very ending could have been drawn out a tad bit more, thought it ended kinda pat but I loved the book read straight thru and didn't put it down and now I wonder about a few of the characters you meet in the very beginning and their stories, and can't wait to read them. If your looking for some action a spunky heroine, a take charge guy and a cutie with a smile look no further, sit back and enjoy the read! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Copy of this book.
I really like single parent tropes so this one jumped right on to my kindle. I have read other series by this author and she continues to amaze me with her creativity.
This is a wonderful second chance romance with a whole lot of suspense thrown in. There were times I thought I was watching a movie. So much action had me feeling a little fearful for Lexie and Caine. Add in a baby to the hot mess they find themselves in and it jacked the tension up even more. Lexie is the star here. So brave and so independent. I loved her to pieces. Caine was a bit of a pain in the a$$ at least toward Lexie at first. As the adventure continued, he started to grow on me a bit more. When he offers to watch the baby while Lexie rest---he had me hooked then.
I would love to go back and visit this couple again. I wonder what they have settled into. to me that's a sign of a great story. It leaves me wanting MORE!
Always a pleasure to read for this author! Grab this one!
*Complimentary copy provided for an honest review.
This book was a good premise for a story bogged down with a whole lot of interior dialogue, a lot of things like, "it reflected across his/her face", and a whole lot of saying not doing. There was some action, but again, a whole lot of she feels this, and he feels that, and not a lot of telling...not sure how Caine and Lexie were this great love after a month together when he thought she was a selfish, spoiled brat when they weren't in bed, and she thought he was just her Dad's puppet, again when they weren't in bed...they knew NOTHING about each other except that they had great sex, and we're supposed to believe it was this great love they hung onto while they were apart??? No, didn't buy it...Lexie and Caine during their time together spent most of it assuming what the other thought and felt or having sex...and at one point Caine thinks how during their MONTH together he could easily read her face and now he can't and it made me laugh out loud!! Potential was there, but the execution was just not.
I loved this book. Secret babt trope is a hard one to do right but this one was good. Caine left Lexie abruptly one night (before either of them knew she was pregnant) because of his job and didn't contact her again. She was left heartbroken and when she found out she was pregnant with his baby, she decided not to tell him. I understood her decision, she couldn't contact him and the only possible way was her father but that was a slippery slope so yeah. And she felt that he just didn't care about her. Through the whole book, we see Caine struggling not to get attached to the baby and not to fall in love with Lexie any more than he already is but he just can't. He loves those girls and nothing can change that. He was hurt when he realized that Lexie wasn't going to tell him about the baby (and he had every right to be) but at the same time he thought they were better without him. That made me feel so bad for him, that poor man. He just wanted a family of his own but was too afraid to screw it up. I loved this couple, it was a journey but they ended up together as they should
High drama with anxiety, stress and intense fear assaults the reader immediately as it becomes obvious that Lexie Hollister, a young American nurse living in a small, impoverished village during a war-torn revolution in South America, and her two-month-old daughter, are in mortal danger. With the help of Caine O'Roarke, a special forces military operative and former boyfriend, Lexie and her baby find themselves being hastily escorted into the dense growth of the dangerous and immense jungle. This story explodes as the life threating hazards begin to increase, from the deadly criminals chasing them to the treacherous jungle and its inhabitants facing them at every turn. Take this perilous journey with Caine, Lexie, and their child, Ana, as they learn how to share the greatest fears from their past, grow stronger as a family, and work together to get away from everything that would harm them. Really Good Read!!!!!
Action in the jungle? who would have thought it would be such an interesting read. One night of passion and the next morning he's gone. She never thought she would see him again or that she would care so much. He never thought he would be gone so long and all that got him through it was thoughts of her. The book seems too short for all that happens but is a wonderful read filled with action, intrigue, a few times where breathing or stopping was not an option, emotional (to say the least) and some passion too. Caine just rips your heart out.
Great story from this author who knows passion and angst and just how to stretch it out and keep you turning the pages. I love her work and the diversity keeps me coming back. She isn't just the creator of the Donavon's she is so much more.
Caine is tasked with getting former flame Lexie out of a dangerous situation in San Rafael. Seeing Lexie again brings back a lot of old feelings but nothing compares to the shock of finding out he is the father of a two month old baby girl. A dangerous trek through the jungle with a deadly enemy in pursuit has him rethinking everything he thought he knew about Lexie. Is this the second chance that could draw them together or will it split them apart forever?
This romantic suspense adventure is another great read from Margaret Watson. Realistic characters, an excellent storyline, romance, and drama make this book hard to put down. I loved it.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
This book is a romance that will pull at your heart-strings and have you on the edge of your seat for sure, it is full of danger, love, uncertainty, action and chemistry that keeps you reading until the end. Lexie is the daughter of Caine's commanding officer he's a Seal, when they finally gave in to their lust for each other one night they didn't get to see if it could turn into something more as he was called in to do mission not realising he would be gone for months. She thought he didn't care and left to get over her heartbreak....... to another country but then found she was pregnant with no way to get in touch and unsure if he would want to know. I loved how this story went it certainly wasn't what I expected in a great way, you will have to get it to find out.
Wanted to bang my head against a wall every time that Lexie refused to believe they were in serious danger. Also, they really didn't know each other well at all and it's completely their own fault. They spend 5(?)ish days in the jungle on the run with no one else around and they barely talk about anything important. Just argue about whether they are in danger or not (they are). The fact that she is arguing with a military trained man about extracting themselves (baby included) from a very dangerous situation is insane. Listen to him dummy!
Less time spent in the jungle and more time spent in the States figuring out their baggage would have been preferable. There are only so many times that Lexie can be described as feeding, changing, or carrying Ana before the story gets boring.
I obtained this free e-book from amazon and I am voluntarily writing a review. I enjoyed this story about a rich, spoiled politician's daughter and the man hired to rescue her from a small Mexican village before a rebel uprising occurs and their trek through the jungle to escape. What I had a hard time accepting was the absence of any bugs, snakes, or a two month old baby that never cried even when spending days in a sling against a body in the hot humid jungle. Every time Lexie plopped on the ground or against a tree I cringed expecting an unpleasant encounter but apparently the jungle is safer than the parks in Phoenix, Az. where I live. Go figure.
Lexie was a spoiled, rich girl who partied all the time. She goes to San Rafael and ends up staying. Caine is former SEAL but is sort of a mercenary now. Eleven months ago, Caine leaves Lexie in his bed and goes on a mission for her father. Now her father sends him to San Rafael to bring Lexie home. But it will take days to get out because they have to evade some military men wanting Lexie. What Caine doesn't expect is a baby. His baby. Will they be able to leave the country without being caught? Loved this story. Could not put it down. Action. Sex. Caine who never thought he'd ever have a family. And the party girl who has to finally grow up.
Idiotic characters? A woman who doesn’t want to leave a country where her and her child are in danger. A man who’s so determined that he won’t be a good father that he won’t even look at his child? Other than the characters the story was good. However beyond the fact that Ana is two months old and has red hair we know nothing about her. The way she didn’t cry in the entire book is just not realistic. Babies cry. Whether they are hungry or not. They cry. In a jungle where her parents are stressed out and it’s really hot? She’d cry.
Caine is great at being a loner, that way no one else gets hurt. But, he does hurt Lexie when he leaves without a word on a mission.
Lexie has Ana, their daughter, in San Rafael, where she went after Caine left. Now,he’s back to rescue them both, once he learns about Ana, from a horrible gang who don’t want Americans in their country.
As they flee through the jungle, they unravel their secrets and pasts, while they can’t help wanting their relationship to continue.
Well written adventure, great setting in the Amazon jungle. Love that Lexie doesn’t just follow when Caine tries to lead.
I can not be the only person out there who feels if someone's been a d-bag the ENTIRE book you don't actually forgive that when on the very last damn page he decides maybe his lover and CHILD are worth at !east trying. Seriously! And marriage!?!? after all that b.s.!?! No. No, it pisses me off . I don't like or respect any people like this. I don't buy it. I love this writer usually, and her romantic thrillers/dramas, but this one was not great for me.
HEA with all the highlights that keep you on the edge of your seat til the last page
If you want to read an adventure and fast paced story this is the book for you. Lexie and Caine have history and unresolved issues between them. Dodging bullets, escaping into a jungle with a newborn is terrifying. Will Caine be able to protect and save them. Read this book and see why I couldn't go to bed without finishing it.
I loved this story. It kept my attention from the start. You know there is a back story to Caine and Lexie but it doesn't come all at once. It comes out as the story moves from quiet moments to more action packed ones. They learn more about each other as they flee into the jungle. The reader has surprises in store until the very end. Definitely reading the next in the series.
He had loved her and left her behind for a sudden and dangerous job. She missed him, wondered where he had gone but he never left her heart. Would they find each other? That is the story. I enjoyed the storyline. I really loved Ana in this book.
I definitely like this story it was pretty good. The only thing is while he did end up wanting the child and his ex, I felt she gave in too easily to him, especially knowing how he felt at the time. It would be more realistic if she fought harder. Which is why I give 3 stars rather than 4 stars
