I tried to hear, in that one word, if she sounded like Sarah, and then realized, with an awful jolt, that I no longer remembered what Sarah sounded like. What she had sounded like. Before.

The Stranger Game is the story of a girl whose older sister went missing four years ago. Her family was deeply affected. Nico truly believed her sister to be dead after so many false leads and no new hope found. When the Morris family receive a phone call from Florida, everything changes. A girl saying her name is Sarah Morris is at a shelter. She doesn’t remember much of anything besides her name - retrograde amnesia. She wants to come home. Where has she been for the last four years? Why would she leave? Was she taken?
What were their lives like, lives without the giant gaping hole that is left when someone in your family goes missing.

When Sarah went missing, things changed for Nico. She had to live up to being nothing like her sister for her parents sake. Even though the two look alike, they’re nothing alike. Nico is the good girl; straight A student, captain of tennis team, volunteer at Teen Hotline. She always follows the rules constantly feeling pressure to be perfect and never make her parents worry the way Sarah did. Sarah was the bad girl; a few years older, head cheerleader, rule-breaker, older boyfriend, history of running away. When Sarah went missing, it wouldn’t take a rocket science to figure out why Nico feels like she has to be so perfect.
What wasn’t said, the dark undercurrent of her compliment: you’re not like her. I was that age now, the age she was when the trouble really started. When she ran away the first time. But I was so different, a good girl.

The person Sarah was is no longer the person she is. Something happened and it changed Nico’s sister. Maybe that could explain all the extreme differences in Sarah’s personality. Her sister used to be so unbelievably mean, while now she’s actually nice? The book alternates perspectives between Nico and Sarah adding a great deal of suspense to the story. This is where you start dying to know exactly what happened to Sarah. I was practically craving Sarah’s chapters.

The story was well-crafted with excellent twists along the way. I especially liked the way Cylin Busby chose to end the novel. There is absolutely zero romance throughout. If you’re looking for a quick suspenseful read, this could be for you!

CW:

Well that had some pretty chilling moments in it!

I actually read into the wee hours of the morning with this one as I desperately needed to know what had happened to Sarah. There was a point in the book where I felt things unfolded in quite an abrupt and seemingly premature manner, only to be drawn in again after this but for entirely different reasons. Cryptic, I know! I have ordered 2 copies for the library but predict that more will be needed! I think this will be great for NZ Y11 and Y12.

Jar of Death Pick #24

3.5 Stars

I've owned this book for about 3 years and I always intended to read this but for some reason or another I just kept putting it off. I'm glad I finally read it because I enjoyed this book so much.

I'm not going to give a lot of info about the plot of The Stranger Game because its best to go into this blind.

Nico Walker's older sister Sarah disappeared 4 years ago and it completely devastated her family. But then the most astonishing thing happens...

Sarah is found.

But it soon becomes clear to Nico that the sister who disappeared is very different from the one who returned.

I thought I knew the direction this book was going to go in but the third act threw me for a loop. I didn't expect the story to end the way it did. And I found it refreshing.

Cylin Busby took a plot that could have been predictable and flipped in on its head. The only reason I didn't give The Stranger Game a full 4 stars was because I thought the ending was a bit rushed.

If you like YA thrillers than give The Stranger Game a try.

Couldn’t put it down. It’s a masterful, hold-on-to-the-edge-of-your-seat, heart-pounding mystery that unfolds like an episode of a TV crime show. Suspenseful from the first to the last satisfying page! I loved it!!!!

Wow, really good mystery story! Amazing cover too. What was different about this book for me was that it wasn't about friends and social life very much, it was about two sisters who are very different and how they act and how their parents are. I really liked that this book was ya but also about a family and not so much about whose popular and whose not and being beautiful and the right clothes and social. I loved Nico and felt like I really knew her totally. The only down part of the book is the abuse which isn't very graphic but it is there and that might be hard for some people to read about (it was okay for me but there was one part I didn't ever read).

ETA: Cannot keep this in our library! Just had a copy actually stolen :( But, it's the sign of a popular book I guess. Hope we will see this in paperback soon!

I discovered the author Cylin Busby after she published Blink Once, then went back to read her memoir. Both of her young adult books are popular with my teens. Her middle grade novel, The 9 Lives of Mr. Tibbs, was also lovely and I’ve seen nothing but good reviews for it, but it’s not quite on target for the age of my readers.
So this book. What can I say? Not a lot, because it is a twist within a twist.
You have more than one “unreliable narrator” here.
There will be the comparisons to Gone Girl, and to be totally honest, I liked The Stranger Game better (simply because the characters are more likable).
Here is the story of a girl named Nico whose sister, Sarah, goes missing. What we soon learn is that Sarah was terrible and that no one really misses her. And then, she’s back, and Nico’s world is turned upside down. There are two mysteries here: What happened to Sarah, where was she for five years and then…is this really Sarah?
I’m going to give this to my more sophisticated young adult readers and watch their reaction. This is the joy of my job! Finding a book like this one and sharing it with the kids at my school then enjoying the deep, meaningful conversation that results. Only downside is waiting until October to share with kids!
(Thank you to HarperCollins for an advance reading copy, I will treasure it)

You guys know me, I ADORE a good mystery/thriller. I seriously can't resist. So I literally pounced on this book 5 months and 20 days before it was published. FIVE MONTHS you guys!!! Ain't no shame in my game!

But in all seriousness, this book is amazeballs!!! You start out really feeling sorry for the main character, Nico. Her sister has been missing for 4 years and it completely changed her life! Her parents hover over her, constantly worrying that they are making the best decisions. And then there's the whole trying to live up to your perfect sister thing... ew!

And then her sister Sarah, comes back and the everything that you thought you knew is GONE. OUT the window people, OUT. THE. WINDOW!

I read this entire book in about 12 hours, I couldn't put it down and took it EVERYWHERE with me! There were so many moments that shocked me, and I just can't say enough about how epic this book is!

This book is like Lisa McMann's Dead to You meets Pretty Little Liars. Seriously!!! I am so stoked to see what else Cylin Busby has up her sleeve in the future!

GRADE: A-

Four years ago Nico's older sister disappeared. Now she's back. Or is she? The Old Sarah was a spoiled bully; this New Sarah is loving and kind, the sister Nico always wanted. More than one person knows why Sarah went missing, but New Sarah has retrograde amnesia and can't remember.

THE STRANGER GAME is a fast paced mystery that hooked me from the beginning. Nico haunted narration had me rooting hard for her. She's a much more complex character than I had originally imagined. The mystery of Sarah had me guessing. Her brief chapters outlined how she came to be returned to her family and the abuse the endured while in captivity.

Cylin Busby created the ideal balance of mystery and heart that kept me reading all day. I will definitely look for more of her novels.

I enjoyed the audiobook very much as well.

THIS BOOK, CAUGHT ME OFF GUARD!

If you read this book, make sure you don't read the author's note in the back of the book because it will contain a massive spoiler for this book. And if you spoil yourself by reading it, then you would not enjoy this book.

I feel the biggest strength of this book was how it maintained it's mysterious atmosphere throughout the entire book. I was also second guessing the how and the why's of everything that has been happening. And I liked that.

A more coherent review to follow.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to HarperCollins and Edelweiss.)

“I think this is her.”

This was a YA mystery story, about a girl missing for 4 years who finally came home.

I felt quite sorry for Nico in this story, having her sister come back after 4 years, when she believed her to be dead couldn’t have been easy, and the media attention could only make things worse.

“I really don’t want reporters and media calling the house or coming by.”

The storyline in this was about Nico’s sister Sarah being found 4 years after she disappeared, and returning home to her family. We had a bit over mystery over how and why she had been taken, especially as she had amnesia concerning the event, and we also had the nagging question over whether or not the girl in question was really Sarah or not. This mystery aspect was pretty good, although I did find the pace quite slow.

"Sarah would kill me if I told them about the situation with Paula and Max."

The ending to this was okay, and I liked that we got concrete answers to all the questions posed.

Review coming tomorrow. I am scared. BYE!!!

Review:
Cylin Busby is an author who has written numerous Young Adult and Children’s novels including the memoir THE YEAR WE DISAPPEARED and the young adult romance BLINK ONCE. THE STRANGER GAME is her latest novel published October 25th 2016. This novel is a mixture of Young Adult mystery and thriller. It is very dark and suspenseful.
Four years ago Nico’s sister, Sarah, disappeared. Her life had been totally flipped since her sister went missing. After many false leads for about two years, Nico’s family did not hear much about Sarah’s disappearance for another two years. Until now. Sarah Morris is found at a children’s center in Florida. Nico’s family claims Sarah and goes home. They’re elated to have their Sarah back. But, she seems different. She has gotten much older and has amnesia. She does not seem to remember much and acts completely different. Sarah is not the perfect popular girl she used to be. She is no longer strong and athletic. She is actually much nicer than before, treating Nico much better than she did before her disappearance. She comes home with a broken arm, burns on her back and no memory of how those things happened. No one really knows what happened to her while she was gone or who was involved. Although Nico and her parents are very happy to have Sarah home, she is not the same. She is practically a stranger.
I enjoyed this book very much. It started out slowly, but was still very interesting. It seems like more of a mystery until toward the end where it becomes much more fast-paced and thrilling. This book has a very mysterious vibe. It leaves the reader questioning until they find out the truth. My curiosity was always peaked and I always wanted to keep reading. There were many surprising twists that I loved and that really caught me off guard. I liked the characters as well and they seemed believable. I really liked Sarah after she returned home. I enjoyed the family dynamic and the sisterly bond developed between Sarah and Nico. I found myself relating to them as I have a sister myself and we are very close. Although I enjoyed the plotline and characters very much, I did have one minor problem with the book. I was left with a couple unanswered questions about the novel after I finished. Not many, but there is a big one that bothers me because I would really like to know the answer. I suppose it can be up to the reader's interpretation. Overall, I really liked this novel so I did not knock off any stars for my own questions. I think Cylin Busby definitely achieved what she wanted to with this novel. It is very dark and creepy, but still very entertaining and enjoyable. It has twists that are sure to shock her readers. I could not stop thinking about the book after I finished it. I think this book will stick with me for a very long time.
I recommend THE STRANGER GAME for mature teenagers who are looking to be thrilled and are not scared very easily. Be aware that this novel contains some strong language and scary situations. The book is recommended for teenagers ages 13 and up. This book is perfect for fans of WE WERE LIARS by Ee Lockhart. If you are looking for a book to thrill you, shock you or blow your mind than this novel is the perfect fit. If you are looking for a dark suspenseful young adult thriller then this is perfect for you as well. I really liked this book and recommend it to anyone looking to be thrilled.

DO NOT start this book if you have anything else to do or anywhere to be or if you like sleep. Yeah, I was up late reading this one because it's the type of book you have to see what happens in. If you are also the kind of person who skips to the end, skip this one because you will not be able to stand not knowing.

Quick review for a quick read. "The Stranger Game" by Cylin Busby was an intriguing read from beginning to end, and I'll admit had me hooked to see how all the pieces of this fell into place. Nico Walker hated her older sister Sarah for the numerous times that Sarah tormented her in her youth, but when her sister goes missing one fateful night, it throws her entire family and community for a tailspin. Sarah becomes something of a tragic horror story, and while pieces of Nico's life fall into better turns as time passes on, the lingering shadow of her sister remains in some measures.

At least until her sister all of a sudden returns into their lives. With retrograde amnesia and no insight as to the things that happened to her during her time missing, Sarah is welcomed back into the family with open arms and a path towards healing. There are many truths told here to Sarah's horror and experiences in the mix, but the questions remain as to truly what happened and what secrets lie underneath the surface of Sarah's sudden reappearance.

I thought the use of unreliable narrator in this tale was well played. While I had an idea that the ending would be what it was, I still thought the way all the pieces of the narrative fell into place were satisfying and intriguing, even if it meant some suspension of disbelief (there were still a few times when I thought that there were pieces of the case that should've been checked, but then again - it wouldn't have ended in the way it did had those inquiries been made.) I'll admit that while this narrative took some dark turns and ends on a rather eerie resolutions, I still found myself really rooting for the characters here. The narrative gives a sympathetic eye to both Nico and Sarah's perspectives here, and as the narrative moves forward, you get the idea that each girl is holding something important back, taking their time in telling their stories up until the reveal that allows the reader to see the truth behind the smoke and mirrors of the case. It's a well plotted and crafted mystery that had me hooked even long after I finished the story. I definitely want to read more of Cylin Busby's works in the future.

Overall score: 4/5 stars.

First, let me say that I almost never write reviews. But in this case, I made an exception.

Cylin Busby did a phenomenal job of making this story her own. Although I had guessed one element of the ending (since she was inspired by a real story, I'm sure I've seen a crime show or two with a similar premise), the overall conclusion was surprising and left me with conflicting emotions. I can't get the story out of my head, and I definitely don't want to.

Busby has a clean and fresh writing voice. Her writing isn't cluttered-- the descriptions given always have a clear purpose. She adds details that hint at the truth-- things that are so tiny I didn't notice them until after I finished. Her description of what Nico and her family went through after Sarah's disappearance makes the story chillingly real.

The protagonist, Nico, is easy to relate to. She's a broken teenager, but wants to be normal. She struggles with the changes happening in her life and the turbulent emotions they bring. By the end of the book, Nico and her sister Sarah have both been developed into complex characters-- and I was rooting for them despite the large mistakes they made. Only a really good author can make readers sympathize with characters who have really screwed up.

Overall, "The Stranger Game" is incredibly well written. The story and characters and very believable, and the writing and organization were flawless. I will forever be impressed with the chapters narrated by Sarah, which, looking back, were brilliantly written. Everything was revealed gradually, then all at once, in such a spectacular way. I'll definitely be watching for Cylin Busby's future writing!

This is a story about a girl coming home after disappearing for four years. Nico Morris's older sister Sarah disappeared when Sarah was eleven. It was a devastating event for the whole family. Nico's mother became an advocate for missing children; her father buried himself in work; and Nico grew used to people looking at her as the "girl whose sister disappeared." Her best friend is someone she met after Sarah was gone.

There have been countless leads over the years, suspected sightings that turned out to be false alarms. This time a girl walks into a children's shelter in Florida and says her name is Sarah Morris. Nico, her mom and dad fly to Florida to get her and bring her home. But this Sarah is greatly changed. She has amnesia but is a much nicer version than the Sarah who tormented Nico when she was a child with both verbal and physical taunts. The two become good friends and Nico is especially glad that her family is now whole again.

This story is mainly told from Nico's point of view but with some chapters where we learn Sarah's story. I suspected early on what was going on in this story based on what Sarah was telling in her story.

I found the story to be thought-provoking as I wondered if I would make the same choice that Nico makes. Readers will enjoy debating her choices.

Right now, I'm giving this a 4.5, I might come back and edit that up to a 5 star.

Things I like about this book:
1. Writing. This author has a spare style with a lot left unsaid. I love that.
2. Characters: believable. I have two sisters and I understand Nico. A lot.
3. Alternating chapters: Read through the other reviews here and no one has mentioned this. Are we all reading the same book?
4. Mystery. Ah, it's good, very good.

Things I don't like about this book:
1. Nothing. Haw, just kidding, there is one thing.
It's not something I don't like just something I'm thinking about and that is, is this really an adult book? I am interested to see how teens really like this.

I had already read and loved the book Blink Once by this author, and decided I wanted to try another one of her books. It took me a few years to get around to it, but I finally read this one, and I was not disappointed! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The mystery of what happened to Sarah was so compelling that I had a hard time putting this book down.

There were a couple of things that happened in the book that I questioned. One being the way the police brought the family over to the site where they found one of the bodies to identify it. Wouldn't they have waited until the body was at the morgue? Another was the way the family was informed of every little lead that came in. Wouldn't they have only been told of the most promising ones? Other than that, I really thought this was a well done book and I love the author's writing style. She is very good at writing a mysterious atmosphere that just permeates the whole book. Just like in Blink Once, the twist was very well done. There was a certain point where I started to suspect, but still wasn't sure, and liked the way the author kept me guessing. I would love to read more books like this from this author.

I also want to mention how much I really like this cover. It's someone floating in water with the trees overhead reflecting in the water. There is a part in the book that this cover is taken from and I always like and appreciate when the cover artist uses a scene from the book for the cover.

This review was originally posted on The Moonlight Library

I'm cultivating a new love for YA thrillers, and The Stranger Game is so far a quiet gem for me.

It began with the return of Nico's missing sister, Sarah. Except that Sarah seemed… not quite right. Instead of being a total psycho bitch, cruel to both her parents and her younger sister, this Sarah was quiet, withdrawn… and nice. Grateful, even. Polite. Helpful.

Nico seems convinced that she's not the same Sarah.

I thought that Niko wasn't being particularly fair, since Sarah had been missing for four years, beaten, tortured, starved, sexually abused. Her extreme personality makeover could be explained by the result of this trauma on a fifteen year old girl.

The narrative, although fast-paced, takes its time to gently unravel its many twists and mysteries, and compounding that with unreliable narration, made it a book I didn't want to stop listening to. The author is adept at leaving hints, throwing down subtle red herrings, and planting concrete evidence. But which is which?

As Nico reveals more of her own past trauma, and her relief at Sarah having gone missing, we also get Sarah's point of view. Sarah claims she can't remember anything, so traumatic it must have been. The police keep questioning her, but they can't get answers… until someone thinks they know the truth of what happened to Sarah the day she went missing.

In this book there is no romance, no rich white girl problems, no circle of friends. It's all about the sisters and their complex relationship, both past, present, and future. I can't really say too much more because I don't want to spoil it, and it's better if you go in not knowing much, but I really recommend it if you're into mysteries (really, where have you been all my life?!)

Something about this book just wasn't working for me. I can sort of pinpoint it, but not perfectly. I didn't like the voice very much--I felt detached and disconnected from it.

Also, the writing was far too simple for my taste. I just found myself putting this one down often and doing other things.

I scanned forward to the ending, and I'm glad I decided to DNF because I don't think the twist would have worked for me if I had stuck with it. I'm obviously a black sheep here because this book is getting some really high ratings so far, but I'm bored with this so I am putting it down.

Young adults who love psychological suspense (think We Were Liars) will love this one. The story is told from the perspective of two sisters - Nico is high achieving and living with her family at age 15. Sarah, four years older and a rebel, has been missing for 4 years and suddenly reappears. I read the ARC of this suspenseful, clever read.

MY THOUGHTS⇣

Told in alternating POV's between Nico and Sarah...Nico in the now and Sarah in the past leading up to the now. The narration, by both Erin Spencer and Arielle Delisle, was a win-win and performed swimmingly by both narrators.

A different take on the missing/kidnapped formula that may have taken the easy way, but may have also done it to keep everything a PG rating and suitable for younger readers. I sort of saw the way it was going but I also think it was done intentionally that way. It isn't a story told for the purpose of blowing your mind with the unforeseen twist. It's more a story of perseverance or the tenacity of the living to keep on doing so, and maybe make their world a place that they can live in. It was maybe done a little too subtly; for everyone else to see...or, maybe I'm giving it more credit than it deserves.

Weirdly, this is the third YA book I've read in the last few months that's about an abducted child returned to his or her family. The Stranger Game was more like Lost and Found than like Afterward. In other words, it was more of a psychological thriller than an issue book.

Nico's sister has been missing for four years and her family is shattered. Then one day, they receive a call from Florida: Sarah has been found. Nico and her parents fly down to pick Sarah up. It's Sarah, definitely. Or are they just seeing what they want to see.

I thought this was very well-crafted and suspenseful. I liked the way the alternating perspectives of Nico and Sarah were used to add suspense and give clues. Great resolution!

Definitely recommended for fans of psychological thrillers!

Thanks to the publisher for providing a free advance copy of this book for me to review.
