Hers was a face that made powerful monarchs lose their wits. Having seen Padmini’s reflection in a mirror, Sultan Ala-ud-din Khilji wanted her more than anything else in the world. But she was already the queen of brave Ratnasen, ruler of Chittor. In an unfolding drama of lust and treachery, Ratnasen’s band of Rajput warriors displayed the outstanding courage for which they were rightly famous. And Padmini showed the world what love and honour mean to a woman.
This book talks about Padmini, the queen of Chittoor which is in Rajasthan. It is not be confused with the one in Andhra Pradesh's Rayalseema region. The book starts off with the minister describing the beauty of Padmini, who was the princess of Sinhala, in present day Sri Lanka. The country was not partitioned as it is now during that time. The part where Pandit Raghav Chetan used sorcery to tell the phases of the moon made me angry, as he was at fault and he actually had no right to use sorcery. On top of all this, when he would not acknowledge his mistake but take revenge on the king instead of acknowledging his mistake. I felt disturbed to see The Rajput king getting tortured by Alauddin Khalji, the sultan of Delhi. It was a really brave decision by the queen to commit jauhar but it was quite disturbing as well. The birth of Padmini could have been mentioned. Apart from this, the book was great.
