A standalone series - part of the Motor City Universe
Carter Avery is a by-the-book detective for Detroit and surrounding Wayne County. Known for his cunning and eagle eyes on the crime scene, he’s assigned to decipher a string of unusual murders that will test his skill, and that of his new partner, Nick Farzo. In a city wrought with political corruption and organized crime, these two white-knight detectives will stop at nothing to put the offenders behind bars.
That is, until an outside influence delivers an ultimatum to the city of Detroit on the eve of Devil’s Night, where a record number of arson outbreaks plague the city annually. When entire fire crews start turning up dead, and the women closest to Nick and Carter come under fire, these two soldiers may have to loosen their moral code to put their target down.
Derek is a retired Emergency Medical Professional and has been a lover of telling stories his entire life, having made the transition from “filthy liar” to “sexy author” about the same time silver hairs started showing up in his face (and other places.)
In the early days, he attempted to write science fiction and high fantasy, but discovered it was more fun to write about people touching other people’s tingle-places (smut is cool.) while mixing in action, explosions, and plenty of WTF moments.
He’s also a gamer, gym rat, snow hater (despite living in Michigan), life liver, stunt double for Hulk, and he considers himself to be aggressively unfancy.
Hold onto your seats and enjoy the amazing crime fighting team of Carter and Nick. I loved the Detectives banter. Nick and Carter are something else and will have you laughing a few times with the things they say. This book is amazing and if you haven't read Derek Adam and Jillian Elizabeth yet then you need to. This had it all the drama, the blood, sexy scenes, sexy banter, the mystery of solving who is behind it all and don't forget the Detectives behind it all. It has the complete package that makes you glued to the book until the very end and take you for a ride. I know I hated to have to put it down when it came time to adult. A must read.
WOW where to start, This book was not my usual pick for reads, However it blew my mind, made me laugh way to hard way to many times, #Touchmybutt always gets in somewhere, so many funny scenes and banter. I seriously laughed harder than I have in a long time. Now onto the meat of the book, Meet Carter he's a bachelor with a nice clean lifestyle he likes his place, cars and woman clean, he's a Detective who works alone, takes no hunk spunk from no one on his life or things and is damn good at his job, he was recently assigned a Partner. Meet Nick he's the new partner in town, hes full of hunk spunk and eager to learn and work. He's a quick draw who can take an entire mob down himself like a real old west cowboy, he has a HUGE secret that is possibly the best turn a book has taken this year, Seriously outside of the amazing banter and witty comebacks, slimy crooks and faced paced Detroit life this guy is SMOKING hot and harbors one heck of a big table busting hot secret. Chantel by day or Ash by night .She's witty, she's strong and Beautiful what's a girl like her doing shaking her butt at a place like this? slimy Sal and all those Russians, outside groups, slimy cops, foes for friends, slide into Due Soldati and find out what all the raving laughter and emotions are about. Action packed mystery, thriller, romance with a scene you won't ever forget for years to come.
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was my first thriller/ crime mystery read and I loved it. ❤ Carter is a detective who is clearly emotionally torn from his past relationship. He uses his job as a means for an escape from his thoughts.. though it doesn't work all to well. When Carter gains a new Partner Nick he had trust issues being as the corruption with the police department it makes him question his loyalty when it comes to being a clean, by the books kinda detective( which means everything to carter)..
Their relationship blossoms through out the book and will have you laughing your ass off on some of the things Nick says😂 I love his character!!!
This story goes so much deeper than just a crime, murder /mystery..It has passion, regret, mixed emotions, steamy hot sex scenes, and action all packed into an amazing story where two soldier's ( Due soldati)❤ are faced with obstacles and trials on making the right decisions.. whether it be by the books, or gut instinct..
I cant wait to see what happens next❤ Especially with Carter and Andrea❤❤❤❤🙊
I voluntarily read this as an ARC read. This book took me a minute to get into it but after I figured what was going on I couldn't put it down. This book was one of the first crime/mystery books I've every read. It had so much action that I had to go back and read some parts over. Nick had me rolling with his smart comments towards Carter. I love how the interaction with the woman keep it so normal. I truly enjoyed how their partnership formed. It was like it was meant to be. It's what drew me in more and more. I'd highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good action packed book. I give this 5 stars.
WOW!! This book engaged me from the first sentence. The pace is furiously fast as the characters race around Detroit, solving a murder that turns out to be so much more than a murder. The main characters are complex and the relationship between Carter and his new partner Nick is beautifully composed. Both men have trust issues and manage to mainly overcome these to work together. Detroit, itself, also plays a role and sets the gritty, dark, and dangerous tone. Comic relief is found in a supporting character, Chantal, who has her own untold story. (Hint, hint, Derek: future prequel/sequel?). Besides murder, there is the Russian mob, possible gang turf issues, guns, a twisted family relationship, and even a burgeoning love story. All these elements serve to bring the reader to the explosive climax. Bottom line?? Get this book when it releases. Great story!!
Read this as an ARC and so glad I did. It was fantastic. Nick is the smart ass to Carters hard ass attitude. Their partnership took time to grow but it felt natural. There was plenty of action and suspense throughout. Derek writes like the best crime shows on tv. Honestly this book might be better. I could easily picture what was going on. I was hooked from the first day I started. The only disappointment I felt was when it ended. I need to know what happens next! This is a book men or women can read and really enjoy. Plus WOW on the apartment sex scene! It was hot!
My first read by Derek and it so didn't disappoint.. Can't wait to read more
Carter and Nick are two detectives assigned to work what starts out as a double homicide... Things just keep taking twists and turns but can these two figure it out?
The banter between Carter and Nick is awesome and the storyline keeps you guessing
Due Soldati, a story about two cops, Carter and Nick, who are assigned to each other as new partners on the same day that a huge case falls in their lap, is a fanstasitc read. I was absorbed in the story and found it hard to put down. I loved the characterisations and that it was much more than a ‘cold, hard case’ kind of story. 5 Stars.
If you love a thriller with a sexy spin and then you add in those laugh out loud one liners. Then this is the book for you!! I did have to put this book down a few times because I was laughing so hard I had to catch my breath. The whole time I'm reading this book I think I know which way it's going and then BAM!!! I was wrong and as much as I enjoy being right I was so happy to find a book that literally had me on the edge of my seat hanging on to see what is coming next.
Due Soldati by Derek Adam & Jillian Elizabeth is a roller coaster read. Strap in and enjoy the ride as you tag along with two detectives that end up partners. Carter preferred to work alone then Nick shows up. They have to race against time trying to keep people safe as they figure out who can be trusted. This book has everything a reader is looking for; mystery, steamy scenes, drama, ups and downs, and heartbreak. The way it is written makes it feel as if you are right there taking it all in as it happens. Due Soldati passes my great book test with flying colors. It made me laugh, cry, want to throw it, but lastly, I read it one sitting as I could not put it down. This book is outstanding at keeping you engaged. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
What an amazing read. Enjoyed Nick and Carter's story. The title of this book was fitting for these two characters. It had so many laugh out loud moments. The growth of their relationship, building a foundation of trust, all while treading a very fine line of right and wrong, and throw in some memorable one-liners was so well written.
Action packed, suspenseful, fantastic story. Derek Adam was a new author to me when I heard about this book. Since reading Due Soldati I have become a fan of his writing. I love a book that an author not only tells a story, but paint a story so vividly you can see it play out in the minds eye.
Remarkable story. Well written. I cannot recommend this book strong enough. Truly a talented author!
This book is a must read! The dynamics between Carter and Nick are hilarious! The story is absolutely enthralling! Once I started I couldn't put it down! Can't wait for more!!!
Wowsers is one word to totally describe Due Soldati... Jillian Elizabeth and Derek Adam really outdone themselves with this book ... I absolutely loved it... Carter is literally a prick and nick is easy so lucky type... these two go together oil and water... two different types of personalities but yet when they finally get used to each other they definitely have each other's back... wanna know more about how this story goes the make sure to one click it when it comes out ik I will be❤️ I was blessed with the chance to read an advanced readers copy of it and am voluntarily reviewing it❤️😍
I have to put my hand up and say that although I NEVER read criminal mysteries (Jeffrey Deaver's the Devil's Teardrop was my last along those lines), I do binge watch TV shows like real life Forensic Investigations, NYPD Blue, C.S.I. and pretty much any show revolving around detectives or investigators solving crimes. The one thing that I found truly remarkable about this book was the use of dialogue. It was sharp, witty, morbidly funny and really brought all the characters to life for me and established their individual quirks and personalities. Two cops,Nick and Carter, both with very distinguishing and opposing character traits find themselves partnered up in a bid to fight the escalating crime that is plaguing Detroit. And it is within this partnership that we really get to experience how talented Derek Adam and Jillian Elizabeth are, at not only giving readers these incredibly engaging, intelligent, sexy detectives with integrity and a hero complex, but also a story-line that captivates, enthrals and holds your attention in its fists til the very last page.
'He didn't respond. He just stood there like a statue, pointing that big a$$ gun at my face. I've had guns pointed at me before, I've been shot at, it's part of the job. There was something different about this time. The end of the barrel was staring me down, and I could feel it shaking my confidence. I was absolutely certain he would pull the trigger. I'd die, then he would die.'
This is a truly spectacular thriller. It's real and gritty but with surprisingly softer elements of romance and comedy to balance all the drama and seriousness of the plot. Each character is tremendously written, they're complex, realistic and mesmerising. This is the one book that would certainly have me taking an interest in reading criminal mysteries again.
This book was surprisingly a very entertaining read. I am unfamiliar with these authors but I can say that they did a very good job of keeping me absorbed throughout. This story is high on adrenaline chasing drama but low on the romance. Due Soldati translated to english means 2 Soldiers & this is exactly what this story is about...2 strong, honest men struggling to do their job in an environment of corruption. Carter Avery & Nick Farzo become partners trying to solve a particularly challenging case. Very stereotypical in that you have a jaded good guy detective wanting to work alone but gets paired with a partner he doesn't really want or need, a relative 'newbie' Nick who just wants to work with the best in the department. However, the authors have given us two characters that blend well together & their growth as a partnership is well constructed. The 'romance' is an added bonus...the story was interesting, convincing & entertaining, but Chantal was a little firecracker who managed to give us many chuckle worthy lines and elevated this story to a higher level...loved her. I give this book 4⛧
I loved this book and how it keeps you on the edge of your seat. A crime story that keeps you guessing at every turn with action, mystery and some thrills. Loved this storyline
Carter Avery likes to do things his own way and he doesn't need or want a partner. He is a homicide detective with the Wayne County Sheriff's Department in Detroit. He drives a forest green Dodge Challenger, he used to be a boxer and he has sexy dreams about his ex-girlfriend , Andrea, who he obviously can't stop thinking about. He detests dirty cops and unfortunately, Detroit is full of them. Nick Farzo spent time as a beat cop, worked with an EMS unit and is an expert marksman. Nick's father was a cop and was instrumental in getting his son promoted to detective and assigned to the sheriff's office. He wears black aviators and flashy suits and is thrilled to be working with Carter. Carter and Nick begin investigating a double homicide outside of a strip club. Carter is reluctant to accept any help, but Nick is eager to prove to Carter that he is a team player. Carter reaches out to his old partner Andre for help, but he leaves with more questions than answers. What they really need is a witness to what is going at the strip club. Nick interrogates Chantal, a stripper, and is convinced she can help them. He is intrigued by her and would love to get to know her better. When the killings intensify, and their questions go unanswered, what will Carter and Nick do? Can they trust anyone within the department to help them, or will they have to depend only on each other to protect the city? The first books I ever read as a teenager were mysteries and true crime. As an adult, I became an avid romance reader. "Due Soldati" by Derek Adam and Jillian Elizabeth is a combination of all three of my favorite genre's and I really enjoyed reading it. Carter and Nick are serious and funny at the same time, and Chantal is the added spice that all romance novels need. I hope to see more suspenseful and sensual stories from Derek and Jillian.
Carter and Nick are an unlikely pair that become a team through this first book of the series. In just one day, they experience a roller coaster of action while trying to solve murder cases.
This author is a new to me catching my attention by some posts at first. When I took a gander at what this one was about I liked what I saw. A author who is sneaky will wind you up using his characters-Nick and Carter. He gives a mystery that is filled with heat and funny too blending it well. Not a easy task to do he gives a bit of this and that capturing us along the way. I was pleasantly surprised which is a rarity since I have only seen him goof around on line. He can write and deliver the goods with us being captured hook line and whatever else he delights to do to us.
This was such a great story. Without going into plot details, I will just say, it is action-packed and suspenseful with some fun and romance tied in. I laughed out loud and swooned as I sat on the edge of my seat reading this story wanting to know what happens next.
Separately, I loved Derek's and Jillian's works, together they are seriously amazing! I hope they continue to work together. The flow of their writing is seamless and I love seeing both points of view. I absolutely can't wait to see what they bring us next whether it be solo work or they work together again. I can't wait to read what they have next!
This is the second book by this author and we are reintroduced to Carter Avery and Nick Farzo. Even though we saw these two in Mass Causality, this book actually takes place before that and brings us to the first time these two are actually thrown together as partners. These two are quite literally thrown into an investigation that runs them ragged. Murder, mayhem, mystery, monkey sex scenes; what more can you ask for? Can these brand new partners learn to trust each other enough to figure out everything that is going on? Especially figuring it all out in time before one or both of them get taken out by the elusive bad guys? This book is a continuous page turner and you will so want to read it. I loved it. From start to finish you are taken on a rollercoaster ride that seems to come to a stop....but does it really? I give this book a solid 5 star rating and would consider giving it a higher one if I could. So good.
I have read books by both authors before and really enjoyed them. But put them together and wow! Due Soldati was awesome! It’s different from the books I usually read and I loved it.
Due Soldati is fast paced with lots of action and it had me on the edge of my seat. The banter between the characters was great too. It’s witty and funny and a lot of fun. There is also drama and romance and suspense. The writing was fantastic and seamless. They did great as co-authors. And I have to say- I loved seeing characters I’ve met before in their books.
I totally recommend Due Soldati!! An arc was provided to Stephanie’s Book Reports for an honest review.
A murder mystery, corrupt police, mobsters, strip clubs and some steamy sex scenes is what you get with this book.
This is my first time reading these two authors, and this is not normally the type of book that I would choose to read. But I am glad that I took that chance. It was fast paced and a story that kept me interested. I look forward to reading more books by these two, and hopefully more stories about Nick and Carter.
This is the first book from Derek Adam I have read and I can safely say it will not be the last...the plot was flawless and kept me turning those pages. At times I even chuckled to myself probably too loud. This isn't my normal type of read but Im so glad I picked it up after a friend said you need to read this.
Looking forward to reading whatever comes next from Derek Adams. Well done!
This book will keep you in your toes from beginning to end. Loved all the humor as well as the action! I can't wait to see what happens next!! Highly recommended!
I loved Carter and Nick together. This book takes place over the course of one day with the exception of the epilogue. It's definitely intense, with dramatic scenes and sometimes a lot of carnage.
Each character is clearly defined and separate, the new partnership of Carter and Nick leads to some trust issues initially (on both sides) but it all works out in the end.
I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It was nicely written, the characters seemed to be well thought out. I liked both Carter and Nick, Chantal not so much, not even a little. For me the book was a tad slow and didn't really pull me in until about halfway, in my opinion the last chapter or two seemed a bit rushed. The story itself was good. Overall I thought it was a decent book.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book*
