If you want to learn how to do magic, read this book. Read it to learn the components of a spell, what makes spells work, and how you yourself can create spells and make them work. This may be "for beginners" but it is not wishy-washy; indeed it's a thorough, complete primer on how to do successful spellwork. Even if you've done magic before, the way it's presented here is a simple, elegant way of conceptualizing what it is that you (should be) do(ing). The beauty of this book is that it focuses on the imperative element of a successful spell that many spell "recipe books" assume their reader already knows, which is how to raise power. You can have all of the right ingredients and still not be successful, because you haven't learned effective ways to charge the spell and send it out into the world. But no longer!

"Magical Power" is written in a casual, clear style, and Lipp doesn't talk down to her reader. She's conversational in a way that makes the material additionally accessible to someone who may well be reading their first how-to book about magic, and I enjoyed her use of analogies to make things easy to conceptualize for folks who might not know what spells should look like/feel like/achieve. She spends a bit of time referencing her own work in a way that might seem self-promotional, but it's not gratuitous, and the books mentioned do indeed expand on material she mentions in this text.

I love that she makes the material applicable to folks of varying backgrounds. She acknowledges that she's Wiccan, but this isn't a book about how to do Wiccan magic. This is a book about how to do Western magic. A real advantage of this text is that it acknowledges the fact that magic can be done by folks of varying or no religious affiliation(s). There's discussion of/instruction on how to include god/ddesses in your magic, but Lipp makes it clear that this is an optional element and that successful magic does not require deities' assistance/inclusion.

If you've ever wished you had someone to teach you how to do magic, stop wishing and read this book. It's invaluable!

It took me a little while to finish this week's book, but in no way is that a bad thing. Deborah Lipp's book "Magical Power for Beginners" is excellent. I can honestly say if you are new to this topic, this is a perfect place to start. Lipp covers a whole range of topics, some I never even thought to explore, in a very approachable manner.

Each chapter builds on the next, and there isn't any assumption that you already have knowledge of the topic. I've noticed some beginners books aren't exactly for the complete beginner, that the author assumes you have a little background on the topic. That isn't the case here, which I appreciated.

There are a lot of really nice, well thought-out exercises to help you progress. I didn't do all of the exercises in the book (I did read them!), and when I have more time, I will definitely be returning to work through them.

I can recommend this book for beginners and intermediates alike. There is so much well-research and well-written information in this book, I can see myself using it for a long time. This did help my confidence grown in raising power, which I honestly didn't expect. Well done, Deborah Lipp, I will add you to my fav authors.

I received an e-copy of this book from NetGalley for my honest review.

Deborah Lipp is an excellent author that writes in a way that makes it extremely easy to understand otherwise possibly difficult-to-grasp abstract topics and concepts. Thanks to her (and this book among others, of course) I've finally managed to get what I'm doing with a spell and how it's meant to work.

This is such an excellent book, one I will definitely be recommending to anyone looking for where to start their magical journey in the future.

While I was reading this book, I realized what it is about so many beginners magic books that bother me: they tend to come across as incredibly gimmicky. If the gimmick bothers you in any way, this is going to be the book for you. The information it includes is straightforward, no-nonsense, and very practical, with no time wasted on gimmick. It's really easy to read, and written in a conversational tone that is easy to understand and easy to follow. The text is really well organized to guide the reader through concepts that build on one another, with lots of examples threaded throughout. While the author admits she comes from a Wiccan background, the information shared is mostly very secular. Not that a religious aspect is ignored, but if you are nonreligious, it's presented in a way that's easy to bypass, if you want. Every topic explored is extremely practical, and it comes with a short but useful list of correspondences, as well as some basic spell examples the reader is encouraged to modify. But my favorite part was the spell building walk through chapter, which was really well structured and definitely something I'll be referencing often!

Overall, this one feels like it will become a fundamental part of my library that I'll definitely be referencing often. I'll definitely be checking out other books by this author in the future!

Very useful book. Reading this I realize how many pieces of info are missing in most beginners books of this kind. This one is easy to read, straight to the point and realistic. In spite of the Wiccan background of the author, this should be a basic read for witchcraft practitioners of any tradition. Highly recommended.

Well-written and clear. It did take me a long time to finish it but seeing the detailed case studies at the end really made coming back to finish it worth it.

I read the Amazon preview of this book and was unimpressed. This book is written from the Gardenian Wicca. That isn’t a path I’m interested in so I’ll skip this book.

I'll be honest, in the past I've always struggled with non-fiction. This year I'm working to change that. Unfortunately, I wasn't as able to get into this one as I found it too long-winded. Still, many of the messages were good.
