Rachel Wesson was born in Kilkenny, Ireland but considers herself to be from the capital, Dublin as that's where she spent most of her life. Her dad brought Rachel and her two sisters out every Saturday to give their mother a break. He took them to the library and for ice-cream after. It took a long time for her sisters to forgive her for the hours she spent choosing her books! She grew up driving everyone nuts asking them questions about what they did during the War or what side they were on in the 1916 rising etc. Finally her Granny told her to write her stories down so people would get the pleasure of reading them. In fact what Granny meant was everyone would get some peace while Rachel was busy writing! When not writing, or annoying relatives, Rachel was reading. Her report cards from school commented on her love of reading especially when she should have been learning. Seems you can't read Great Expectations in Maths. After a doomed love affair and an unpleasant bank raid during which she defended herself with a tea tray, she headed to London for a couple of years. (There is a reason she doesn't write romance!). She never intended staying but a chance meeting with the man of her dreams put paid to any return to Ireland. Having spent most of her career in the City, she decided something was missing. Working in the City is great but it's a young person's dream. Having three children you never see isn't good for anyone. So she packed in the job and started writing. Thanks to her amazing readers, that writing turned into a career far more exciting and rewarding than any other. Rachel lives in Surrey with her husband and three children, two boys and a girl. When not reading, writing or watching films for "research" purposes, Rachel likes to hang out with her family. She also travels regularly back home - in fact she should have shares in BA and Aerlingus.
The love story of Eleanor and Gray. After her father death, her grandmother pick up her belongings and give her a one way ticket back to United States because she was the daughter of a former slave. Eleanor is will educated and she has accept a teacher job in Clover Springs. Will she find happiness?
Eleanor has a history she wants to hide. She was brought, as a young child, to England, and educated along woth the aristocracy. When her fathwr died, her grandmother disowned her, sending her to the US with a one way ticket. She has applied for and been accepted as the new teacher for Clover Springs. Laura, who had recentky given birth to a frail baby and who also has a heart condition, brings her baby and teaches, but she isn't really up for full time teaching. Ellen, also recently delivered, hasn't had any time to recover. Eleanor is a welcome addition. The overflowing orphanage, made so by Alicia's and Fr. Molloy's rescue of orphans brought to work in the mines, has meant an overflowing school. Now that Dickinson is gone, Gary has his bar back, and the bordello haa been repainted, tastefully redecorated, renamed "The Haven," and trees planted between it and the saloon. So far, there are no rescued child prostitutes there, but Lily, the interior decorator, watches the place. Gary is quite taken with Eleanor, who seems attracted to him as well as he to her, but she remains adamant that she will not marry. Alicia is going to NYC with Aaron, and invites Doc Erin and Mick along. Lily will be coming along to look after Doc Erin's rescued adopted baby Michelle and Alicia's adopted boys, who are slightly older. Meanwhile, Wilma seems a bit snappish and out of sorts. She's not sleeping well nor resting enough. Her daughter's loss weighs heavily on her mind. Her story comes out, and intersects with how she met Laura. Mrs. Grey tells her story to Wilma, and insists on their going to find the daughter of a former slave who has made wise investments that allow her to help reunite families separated by slavery. While there, Wilma meets a man who gave her amd her daughter a cup of water when they were on the auction block. He was a freedman but the slavers enslaved him despite his having his papers with him. She feels guilty for his enslavement but he doesn't blame her. While she is there, she learns how badly blacks have been treated since the war despite winning their freedom and their being in the West, a supposed land of freedom and opportunity for all. She meets a young girl who's being reckless since a rape by white boys, and takes her on a trip back to Clover Springs for a visit. The pastor of their church is sweet on the girl despite the situation. Mrs. Grey meets the slave from her family's plantation, whom she had taught, against her father's wishes (along with other slaves), how to read, who had taught her horsemanship, and whom she helped to escape (among others). They return home, both in better spirits. A while later, Zack returns to give Wilma news that means a larger group than just the 2 ladies and the girl will be returning to Denver. ZIt turns out that those who went to NYC got caught in a blizzard that blew down the telegraph lines, and delayed everything. Love has blossomed all around, from intense to varying stages of interest. The town decided to take applications for young single women of good character to be given room, board, and a small stipend, in exchange for a years' work, in hopes of some of them wanting to settle there and marry after their contract is up...and hopefully, adopt some of the orphans. But the ones who accepted and had their tickets paid for by the town, got off in the city instead - so they were told when they asked the railroad to trace the girls as they were worried something bad had befallen them. The town is holding a sort of barn raising affair to enlarge the orphanage and build a new, larger school that might allow for dividing the kids based onbage and edication level, and possibly seeking another teacher. There is a dance afterwards, which should be if interest with the attractions to downright proposals of marriage possibly occurring. The next book should be interesting...
This was a book of secrets from the Old South coming to light and healing in Clover Springs.
Eleanor Templeton has been disowned by her family in England, after learning that her late father and an ex-slave from the American South were her parents. Being half-black, she was an outcast in their society. Her grandmother gave a ticket to Boston and a letter of reference. She accepted a position as school teacher in Clover Springs with plans to never marry.
Saloon owner Gary Barrett is also from England and is attracted to Eleanor. He watches over her in town, even saving her from setting the boarding house kitchen on fire. She is attracted to him, but feels she can never marry.
Many beloved characters find love and healing. True history plays apart in some characters.
Oh my! I absolutely loved this book! So much going on at once, I can't wait to read the next book! Warning, there are a few cliff hangers!! Such a great and compassionate story about whites and blacks in the Civil War aftermath! Another incredibly entertaining and yet historically educational book from Rachel!! She has such a talent for making you feel what the people in that time and situation would feel!!
I really enjoyed this series of ten books by Rachel Wesson. Each book can be read separately or in the Series. I loved all the characters......Each having their own personality and trials to overcome. Many issues were handled very delicately and with tact. I would highly recommend this Series to anyone who enjoys historical fiction with an emphasis on faith and God as their source of strength. Very sweet and inspirational. Enjoy!!!☺💖☺💖☺
I have loved all the books in this series. As I read a new one, I think it’s the best of all so far. This one takes that prize…!!!!! I’m really liking the “ family “ emphasis throughout this book about Eleanor. I just wish my hometown could be as excepting as Clover Springs. This book reminds me how much we Hope in this world.
If possible these books would get a 10 star rating. Rachel Wesson more of Clover Springs books please. I felt as if I was there through all of the joy and heartache. Awesome writing!
So starting a series at #10 is probably not the best way to do it but I'm not sorry I chose this one! An author whose characters live and breathe, who writes it cleanly without taking the pulpit is a treasure indeed.
Eleanor is new to Clover Springs. It is hard to stay with a stiff upper lip for long with such great people around. Gary is a sweet guy. Can love get through to Eleanor. Find out in this book in a series.
I love how Wilma has made connections to her past and the discoveries she's made. I also love how Jane and Eleanor find healing and compassion in Clover Springs. It sounds like such a magical place to heal from the past.
Wow another fantastic book Eleanor is a lovely lady and Gary is really in love with her but Eleanor has things in her past that she has to sort out a 5 star read
This story in the series involves more than Eleanor. The whole cast of Clover Springs characters is effectively touch by the sequence of events. Beautiful read!
There are so many different situations in this book and each of them held true to the Clover Springs from previous books. As always I enjoyed every word.
This is a story of finding loved ones missing because of Civil War. Young lady arrive at Clover Spring with a past she wants no one to know. Wilma has urgings to find out about her daughter who was separated during the war. She wonders if daughter is alive/ has her family grown.
A relaxing and enjoyable historical romance novel. Well written, engaging characters and a story line that captured my attention. I can't wait to read the other books in this series!
Well written. I love the residents of Clover Springs. This story had me crying but a little sad. I was hoping Eleanor family connection would have been resolved. Rosa is a beauty that deserves every day to be a happy ending.
