Murder, kidnapping and a disappearance. Trooper Rick Anthis could use a break. But he hopes it isn't too late in coming.

Rick Anthis, a forty-five-year-old veteran of the Colorado State Police and his husband, Gabriel Thorkelson, a deputy sheriff in a nearby county, enjoy the peace of their suburban Boulder home, but the neighborhood's tranquility is shattered by three rapid-fire gunshots. The pair’s quick reaction allows Rick to witness the abduction of his eight-year-old buddy, Jacob, by his father.

In their quest to find the boy, the clues are sparse and time is of the essence since Jacob is diabetic, a condition Gabriel is far too familiar with. A search of the father's apartment yields nothing more than an old hiking map that narrows the search down to a few hundred square miles. Rick and his CSI team are on the hunt, but with every bit of progress they make, they are thwarted, especially when Gabriel turns up missing.

Reader This book contains gun violence and an instance of domestic abuse.

What can be hotter than a man in uniform? Two men in uniform, of course. Rick is a trooper, his husband Gabe is a deputy sheriff, and they are the main characters in this intense story that has them focus on the kidnapping of the neighbor's son, Jacob, by his deranged father—after he kills the boy's mother, no less. The result is a story filled with suspense, and that only goes up a few notches when Gabe vanishes as well and Rick faces not just having to solve the case on his own, but getting Gabe as well as Jacob out of danger.

Rick is a determined guy, and this time the need to free the victims of a somewhat deranged kidnapper is not just professional. It was interesting to watch Rick focus on his role as a trooper, pushing all the personal fears aside so he could do his job. The constant battle inside him tore at my heartstrings, and I ended up admiring him for the stubborn and single-minded focus he demonstrated.

Gabe had a tough job having to deal with Jacob’s and his own diabetes on top of everything else. His inability to do anything to overpower their kidnapper got to him, but I loved him for his unwavering resolution to keep Jacob alive at all costs. The way Gabe made sure he left some clues for Rick to find was cute and, thankfully, effective.

If you like your romances with a side of suspense, if you enjoy reading about men who share a deep love and a determination to do the right thing, and if you’re looking for a hot, intense read, then you will probably like this short story.

Rick Anthis and Gabriel Thorkelson are married, both in law enforcement and passionate about their jobs and their peaceful life in suburbia.

Jacob is an eight-year-old neighbor boy who befriended Rick and Gabe when they first moved into their quiet neighborhood. When Jacob’s estranged parents start arguing, he heads for the solace of Rick and Gabe’s house. Although Jacob loves spending time with Rick, it’s Gabe and Jacob who have something in common—they are both diabetic. When Jacob is kidnapped by his father, after the tragic murder of his mother, Rick and Gabe get tied up in the case to the point that Jacob and Gabe could lose their lives. At the risk of his own life, Gabe confronts the deranged killer and saves Jacob. And then they both come up with a special way to leave clues for Rick.

Rick has to set his own emotions aside and focus on being a trooper if he’s going to save Gabe and Jacob. He also finds himself caught up in another mystery—that of a dead body and a suspicious man—while the search is on for Jacob and Gabe.

Crossfire is a good novella with suspense, action and lots of deep feelings between Rick and Gabe. Their love for Jacob is never in question. In addition, the story gives readers an interesting look at how the trooper and the deputy sheriff have to work both together and separately to solve cases in the rough terrain of Colorado. This story is intense with a fast-paced plot.

Sometimes a short story really hits the spot. One that's just long enough to let you escape for a little while, that has characters and a plot that keeps you completely engaged. Jon Keys' Crossfire was just such a book. Fun, well written, and a story line that kept me on the edge of my seat. It was my first book to read by him but it won't be the last.

Set in picturesque Boulder, Colorado, Crossfire is the story of two men who have been together a long time, Gabe and Rick. Both men are older, work in law enforcement, and are happily married. How awesome is that? I don't know about you, but I REALLY enjoy a story about a couple who have have been together for a long time, that have history, and a strong relationship. Gabe and Rick like their quiet life, their home and their neighborhood. Rick especially likes his nine year old next door neighbor Jacob. The play football in the front yard, have him over for barbecue, and it's obvious the boy needs a male role model. Jacob's parents fight constantly and their screaming matches can be heard up and down their otherwise quiet street. One night Rick and Gabe are enjoying a nice evening together only to be interrupted by the sounds of gunshots coming from next door. Both men are skilled officers of the law so they jump into action and arrive just in time to see Jacob's father stuff him into a car and disappear.

Rick is beside himself with worry and vows to do whatever it takes to find Jacob and return him to safety. He's in charge of the investigation and the search to find Jacob, which turns frantic as more time passes because Jacob is diabetic and has to have his medication. The search takes Rick and his team through mountains, on horses, and into caves. The story moves quickly, as it must because it's not a long book, but it's not too fast. I was frantically turning pages hoping Rick makes it in time to save Jacob. When Gabe also turns up missing, things get even more fraught with danger and excitement. I really liked how Jon Keys kept the story flowing and the action moving.

This was a really fun, at times sexy, exciting book. If you've never given Jon Keys a try, Crossfire is definitely a great place to start!

I'm a sucker for men in uniform trope so picking this one was a no-brainer. I was hopping for an action filed story and this one didn't disappoint.
Rio and Gabriel are established couple. They don't let years slow them down as the spark between them is still alive. Like any other old couple they bicker and balance demands of their jobs with their relationship. Believe it or not, the action starts basically from the first page of the book. The kid from the neighbourhood is kidnapped and Gabe and Rio are determined to get him back.
The story is well paced and there is just the right mix of police work and funny quips as characters tease each other. I shouldn't forget sexy times as well since those two are still very much attracted to each other: the story gets a bit raunchy at times.
The middle of the book ratcheted up tension in a surprise twist. The sense of danger is almost palpable and I heaved huge sigh of relief once it passed.
I would have liked slower lead in so I could get a better read on characters. It's a case focused story, containing both heat and danger so if that's what you want from book go for this one!

I received copy of this book in exchange for review.

Gab and Rick have an established relationship and it really shows. The author did a fabulous job displaying the love Gab and Rick feel for each other. Between their sweet and sexy romance is the action. Crossfire by Jon Keys is a really entertaining tale of sexy cops being sexy cops. A must read!
