Wayward Son: Wayward Son by Mr Joseph Hansen is a audible version I requested to listen to and the review is voluntary. I wasn't really sure what to expect, I just knew it was in my genre and it was by someone I didn't know and I love finding new authors, new to me. This book blew me away! Neighborhood thugs have been terrorizing the area, even to the point of murder but they never get convicted. No one is safe. Unknown to most, there is a secret new trial therapy for just this kind of troubled people. As these people are ready to murder again, the one they attempt to murder is an old man that has helped them all their life and is in on this new program. Instead of an old man dying that night, they boys are taken to a secret facility and given a new chance at life by living through someone else in a different reality. It is real, and the 'host' died but the memories are there. Totally crazy, fascinating, and great! Where they go, when they go, and what happens to each of the boys is a story in itself. It was an audible and the narrator's voice was perfect for this story! I so loved this book. It touched on many things in life in general also such as racism, love, peer pressure, beliefs, and family. Great book, can't say enough about it.
Splendid first entry into the realms of Sci-Fi by Joe, and a great treatise on some of the current conditions that plague men in these trying times. Once I picked this up, I couldn't put it down!!!
Such a great story. If only this were possible, although I know many, many amazing people who attempt to accomplish the things in this book by the means available, this story makes me wish it was real. Engaging, and as always, HJ writes from his heart, and it shows.
Bob is in the last years of his life. He is offered to work on a secret project that involves traveling to alternate realities, not for him but for criminals, with the intention of changing their perception of life and maybe make new people from them.
I found this idea very interesting. Getting a couple of thugs to travel to other realities, becoming someone else and affront different difficulties. But it was something that somehow did not completely work for me. The stories were interesting enough but they felt like a compendium of short stories, where there was a clear lack of depth in the characters.
There is more focus on one of the thugs, the one which gets to evolve due to this experiment. We hear less from the other one, which remains the same and appears as pure evil, with no depth whatsoever.
Something that disappoint me a bit was the fact that the book kept me expecting something more almost until the end. At some point Bob seems to be receiving messages from aliens, and I expected that part to develop in a different and more interesting way.
I think what I did not like from this book is that it seems just an attempt to proselytize. I guess Hansen wanted to show the difference in nature and nurture, but the result came just too moralizing for me and with little else.
Kevin Pierce’s narration was great, as usual, giving an extra depth to Bob’s personality, and setting the right atmosphere for the story. The audio production was spotless.
I enjoyed the book, but I felt something missing to make it great. It showed a mere experiment in which not everyone would agree about the outcome. I am also a bit tired of reading books where Muslims are the bad guys.
I received a copy of this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.
Absolutely and completely original. I loved this and kept talking about it to my poor boyfriend who was lost each time I opened my mouth. There is a lot going on here and so many stories within stories but all cohesive to the overall tale. Bob has to be one of the best men ever imagined or written. He has a heart and a beautiful mind too. His musing throughout the book were some of the best part. The times visited, the eye opening adventures of the past. It’s beautiful how some parts of life and love are universal and timeless. Do yourself a favor and read or listen to this. You’ll live it too! Kevin Pierce is my favorite narrator ever! I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I listened to this on audio. An absolutely fantastic new take on time travel! Highly Recommended!!
My favourite scene was the one with Craig! It was so very well written. Normally we would probably think that Neanderthals where grunting and uncivilised (they where by our standards), but what do we know about the times they lived in? I absolutely LOVED this scene!
Often when I have listened or read a book that was well written, one that really have something to say, and moves my mind, I think this author must have some wisdom, some real life experience, to write something like this! Well done Joseph Hansen!
I have not read a bad story from Joseph Hansen, but this may be his best work, in my opinion. The story was very imaginative and well thought out. Bob the main character takes an interest in some young immigrants and helps them out in their time of need. He teaches the boys skills in their youth serving like a surrogate father. The boys end up growing into bullies and street toughs, which distresses Bob to the point of taking action. The action he takes is the basis of this engaging and very creative story. The combination of sci-fi elements and historical time periods is a fantastic backdrop for this story. This is a must read.
I loved this story! So well written that it's easy to forget your reading a book the dialogue is brilliant. If an opportunity presented itself that you could help possibly change the outcome of some teenagers lives that you have watched grow into animals would you take the chance.
I highly recommended this book to anyone, stop reading the reviews and just get this book
I really enjoy this book, it’s well written and the title is the message. I finally realized that at the very end. The characters are well developed and interesting and I recommend this book very much. I don’t like spoilers and the authors highlights of his book are more than enough of the story without giving to much away.
I really don't know how to review this book. Difficult to read yet I plunged through. Brainwashing? Traveling through time? Drug induced hallucinations? Not to sound sexist but I really believe this is a guy book.
