This book, y’all. It undid me.

It took me back to my circle of friends from my 20s, to the ups and downs and everything-in-betweens. These characters are so real to me. I could easily identify with them, despite how long it’s been since I was their age, and Sara and Luke in particular hit me in all the feels.

I’m not afraid to admit that I cried. But I smiled A LOT too and even chuckled on a few occasions. Brandy Bruce’s writing style and subsequently Sara’s narrative voice are full of personality and charm.

But, lest you think The Last Summer is all about a bunch of twenty-somethings who gallivant around at the lake all summer with love triangle angst, I can assure you there is so much more to this compelling novel. It’s about true friendship. Trusting God. Praising Him when everything else falls apart. And extending grace – the grace God has given to us – to others and ourselves. It’s an acknowledgement that “All of our love stories have imperfect chapters” and a reminder that “God can fix broken things. He uses broken people for His glory.”

Bottom Line: The Last Summer by Brandy Bruce is the perfect choice to pack on your summer vacation. Characters who are flawed just like we are, an engaging narrator/heroine who becomes your new friend, an emotional journey that hits us in all the feels, and a touching reminder to praise God in the good and the bad. This is not a story – or its characters – that I will be forgetting anytime soon. Charming, real, and completely compelling, make sure this one is on your must-read list!

Thank you Brandy for sending me a copy of your book in exchange for an honest review!

This book was such a great summer read, coming in at just over 220 pages, I was able to finish this up while hanging out at the pool.  It was a really cute story and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.  Romance, friendships, and Texas heat made this a quick easy read perfect for any contemporary romance fans!

The story was so fun!  I immediately loved the friendships within this book.  I often wished I had this kind of close group of friends, so being able to live vicariously through Sara and her friends was such a delight.  They all seemed so genuine but I think my favorite in the group was either Lily or Jason.  I automatically connected with the main character Sara.  We have all been there, crushing over someone who we don't feel like when can say anything too in fear of ruining friendships.  Feeling jealousy when things don't work out the way you would have hoped.  Just wanting to have that relationship that others around  you seem to be having.  What she was going through was really relatable and I loved being able to laugh and be sad with her because I knew exactly how she felt.  Not only that but I found her to be funny and strong, she's a great role model and I don't think I would have handled things with the strength she did back when scenarios like this were happening to me!  I also loved the wedding going on during this book as well, as I just recently got married and it brought back all the feels for me.

One thing I wasn't overly fond of in this book was the religion.  This is literally just my personal preference and I know some will actually love this part of the book.  For me though, I am not really religious so I didn't really like that it was such a big part of it.  I do not think this takes away from the story and it will definitely be a benefit for some, this is just my personal opinion.

Some things that I do think took away from the read though were the "insta-romance" type feelings I got.  I loved all the friends in this book except one.  Debra.  I could go on a tangent of why I didn't like her.  But, when you are dating someone for 6 months and are already looking at engagement rings you need to slow down.  By eight months of dating she was complaining about "why does he want to slow down?" "why has he still not proposed after all this time?" I literally had to skim these parts of the book because it annoyed me so much.  "After all this time", you've only been dating eight months! You shouldn't have even been looking at rings yet! Now, I understand that as you get older and they were around 27 I believe, things move a bit quicker because you know more of what you want in a relationship.  Still, I thought this was absurd.

To me the use of "Texas, y'all" was unnecessary in the book.  The love for Texas was shown enough just by writing a story that takes place there.  Talking about landmarks, food, traditions, those things show the pride for the state enough.

Overall I am happy with how the story ended.  This may be a bit spoiler-y so I will try and be vague.  I do think the end was a bit insta-romance.  The big question didn't really need to happen that soon especially after that break up.  Or more time into their new relationship could have occurred, three months in just seemed too soon.  However, I was really happy to have it end the way it did.  The whole book I was rooting for this particular couple to be together and I don't think I would have enjoyed it had it ended any other way.

This was a cute, quick read perfect for summer and I was happy to be sucked into the friendships and Texas life of this story.  I highly recommend this for Christian contemporary romance fans out there as I think so many people will love this book!

Raw, honest, and emotionally poignant. The Last Summer struck a cord of familiarity with me because it embraced the fact that we are a broken people – all in need of grace, and all in need of God. This novel had such a beautiful arc to illustrate this message with a close-knit group of friends that are so much more like a family.

I loved Sara and I loved that I was able to truly see her heart as I followed her on her journey - witnessing both the beautiful and ugly moments because that’s where the “me too” moments come in. I loved the sense of family and affection I felt with her friends. I loved the humor and the moments of joy. I loved that this story didn’t shy away from the hurt and moments of pain. And most of all, I loved that the arc of the story emphasized the beauty and the all-encompassing power of grace.

I would add that the romance in this book has a satisfying arc and closure, but it wasn't exactly swoony.

Regardless, this book was a beautiful and engaging read.

I was not prepared for the depth of emotion I would experience along with Sara and her struggles! I loved the bond of friendship with this group, and even though they are realistically flawed, that made me appreciate the genuineness all the more. The hot Texas setting makes this a perfect summer beach read, and I loved the details that really made the location come to life in my mind. There is a great balance between the angst of heartbreak and the lighter good times between good friends. I absolutely enjoyed my journey with Sara and this group, and with a handful of eligible men ready to fall for her, tried not to predict the outcome and just went along for the ride. I loved the spiritual themes and lessons that Sara and her friends learn with this season of change, and it brought a depth to the story that made it really stand out.

I finished this book last night with tears in my eyes! It's so beautiful and it feels so real. I love the "group". I've often dreamed of having a loving group of friends who stay together and support each other throughout marriages and life changes. That part of the story might not have been the most realistic part but isn't that why we love to read?! ❤️So we can dream and let our imaginations go places we've never been in real life!? The characters in the group of friends are fun and relatable. Being a southerner I easily got all the "southern-isms" My favorite thing about this story though are the themes of grace and acceptance and humanness. It's really what this whole book is about. I will treasure this book and share it with others who I know will do the same. ❤️

Thank you to the publisher for the free copy I received in exchange for my honest review.

Wow, what a beautifully written book! Many times, books focusing on 20-something Christians feature characters that are WAY too perfect, but this novel featured flawed, broken characters that show humanity and therefore are very relatable.
I ached with Sara when Luke went a different direction than she had dreamed. Her struggles, and honestly those of Debra as well. The spiritual content of this book is spot on, it is realistic and felt very organic to who these characters are, as opposed to a tacked on element.
I experienced a whole array of emotions throughout reading this very fast-paced book (maybe it was fast paced because I wanted to know what was going to happen so I didn't really put it down!). Some parts are humorous, some are sad, and some actually made me a little angry at some of the choices.
Overall, this is a fantastic book, I highly recommend it for a read this summer.

When twenty-four years old Sara Witherspoon walks into the singles class at Christ Community Church for the first time, she doesn’t expect to meet 6 people: Addison, Debra, Lily, Sam, Jason and Luke, who will become her friends, or even more than that - a family. Years go by as the group stays inseparable, sharing each others’ joys and sorrows. Luke becomes Sara’s best friend, but since the moment she laid her eyes on him, she knew she wants more than friendship from him. And then comes the summer when everything changes. All Sara’s hopes are shattered when Luke starts dating Debra. Can she overcome her jealousy and stay close to the people she loves like her own family? And can she find her own path of happiness?

“The Last Summer” is one of those books that immediately grip you and won’t let go. It only took me a couple of chapters to fall in love with the way it’s written, and with the wonderful and diverse set of characters the author created. None of the members of Sara’s circle is perfect, they all have their flaws, but they complement each other, showing each other constant love and support, no matter what. As young people say these days: squad goals! I wish I could have such a great group of friends myself.

The focus is obviously on Sara, who’s the narrator of the story. She’s such a sweet, passionate, funny girl, a little introverted, but always ready to be there for her friends and family. It impressed me how strong Sara was, struggling with her own feelings she knew she’s not allowed to have, choosing to live with a broken heart, rather than destroy the happiness of two people she loved. When this world is telling us all the time to fight for what we want and focus on ourselves, I think this book shows an important message that sometimes it’s much better to be selfless and wait on God, instead of pursuing our desires, no matter the cost.

It was a very emotional read, as I really grew fond of Sara and her friends and wanted all of them to be happy, but - just like in real life - it’s not always possible. Some of the situations shown in this book touched me personally, as the characters were going through the same things I’m struggling with. But thanks to the author I found new comfort in Psalm 113 and I’m learning to praise the Lord, no matter the circumstances.

“The Last Summer” is a wonderful story about friendship, love, and learning to trust God’s plan for our life. It contains a strong, powerful message that God can fix all the broken things and all the broken people, and cover them in His grace. Even if we think there’s nothing left but ashes in our life, the Lord can build something new and beautiful on them, if we’re only willing to trust Him.

Age Appropriate For: 15 and up for romance
Best for Ages: 18 and up

I had seen this highly recommended by some of my Goodreads friends. I decided to try it. The beginning grabbed my heart and pulled me in. A little over half-way through, I was sure the author couldn’t make me happy with the ending. No matter what she did, I would hate the characters for their decisions. And then, the ending was just so…grace-filled and I almost cried.

This book had a few things I usually don’t care for: Exclusively about romance (kinda), characters that kiss very early and often in romantic relationships, and alcohol being consumed by a lot of people. Yet, I loved, loved, LOVED this story.

Why did I love this book? All the main characters (a group of seven friends) put God first. Yes, they did this imperfectly and there were times I disagreed with their decisions, but they all asked each other how they could follow God in circumstances. Really, it has been a long time since I read a romance book that put God so much at the center, yet also pulled at my emotions.

The characters were so real. Each one was clearly defined. I was never confused as to who was who. Since the story was all about the characters this was very important. I loved each of them. Each had strengths and flaws, hardships and joys. I could read about this group for a very long time.

This book also kept me guessing as to what was going to happen, which doesn’t happen often with romance books. I read this book as fast as I could around my work because I want/needed to find out what happens. This book not only left me happy, but also so pleased with how God’s grace and goodness were displayed.

I highly recommend this book to those who like contemporary romance, stories about godly characters, and realistic stories.

(4.5 Stars) I would like to consider myself an honorary member of this beautiful group of friends. It's hard to move to a new place and find where you fit in and I love the way this group fully embraced Sara as she did just that, allowing her to find a "family" within her church group. These interconnected relationships felt real and drew me in immediately.

The writing style vividly portrays the tight-knit friendship that binds this group together through thick and thin. I love the way they use their experiences to strengthen and support each other. The sentiments are very powerful and propel the plot forward--I couldn't stop reading and had to know how it would all end, even through the ugly and uncomfortable parts.

This author is new to me, but I really enjoy her approach to telling a compelling tale and would definitely read more of her books.

Content: mild romance; moderate/heavy Christian themes/elements

This reminded me a lot of Erynn Mangum's books - stories with good friends navigating life, relationships and faith. I enjoyed this for the most part - it was paced well and I liked Sara and empathized with her for sure. There was a lot I could relate to. As for Luke - I liked him until the end. I think this story would have benefited having part of it be from his POV - otherwise he kind of comes off as a coward. It's hard to root for a happy ending when people get hurt in the process, which honestly could have been avoided altogether. I do like how they acknowledged that though. I wasn't a big fan of Debra either, mainly because her personality felt out of place with the group, but I felt for her (and Everett for that matter).

Overall, this was a pleasant summer read that had me missing friends and all the drama that comes with them :).

The Last Summer is different from anything I’ve ever read – delightfully unique and fresh. In one word, it’s a story about friendship; seemingly cute and lighthearted, but soon revealing a hidden depth and complexity. It’s real, honest, and down to earth, and will hit home for anyone who has ever experienced unrequited love. I loved it so much and give high marks for the enjoyment factor alone.

It was in college that I first experienced the forming of close friendships, with strong bonds that have lasted to this day, and The Last Summer takes me back to those years. Brandy Bruce has penned a thoroughly engaging story and I love her conversational writing style. There’s lots of local Texas color, and as a southerner, I enjoyed that so much!

The Last Summer is about the joy of friendship, fellowship, humor, romance, tears, and most important of all, shared faith. These seven young people, mid-twenties or so, experience life together and care about each other. I was pulled in from the first page and became a silent member of the group.

The story is told through Sara’s voice and I adored her. My heart sank along with hers upon discovering that her best friend, who she wanted to be much more, was dating someone else in the group. If there was ever a character that I wanted to shake some sense into, it was Luke. Another close friend, Jason, stood out to me and I’d love to see his story developed.

I loved how spiritual themes were gently woven throughout, touching me with their message of hope. In its realism, this story reflects life – some relationships will be strengthened, others strained; not everyone will be happy, some hurt is unavoidable. But through it all, the value of friendship shines, even in the tough times. And we clearly see a God who specializes in fixing the broken. No one is perfect, and that’s why grace is such a beautiful thing.

One of my favorite takeaways is the reminder of Psalm 113:3, expressed in a worship song that we sing frequently … From the rising of the sun ‘til the sun goes down, let the name of the Lord be praised. When everything feels hopeless, praise the Lord. And when the healing comes, praise the Lord.

Recommended.

4.5 stars ✨ I loved this book!! It was everything I wanted at the moment. It was the perfect summer read. It’s set in hot Texas. As it’s currently really hot, I was SO able to relate.
I loved this group of characters so much. Each one was unique and different but I LOVE that they all put God first. It was so inspiring.
Sara was relatable, and I quickly loved her character. Same with Luke, Lily, Sam, Jason, and Addison. Debra too although not as much as the others. Oh, and I loved Everett too. (He was soo sweet and mature. I wanted to cry.) Basically, I loved all of these characters. They were all well-detailed and different so that I could actually remember them (something that is sometimes a struggle in books with quite a few characters.)
I love how they’re all flawed but they’re always striving to be better and lean on their faith.

The faith in this book was beautiful! I love, love how Sara prays throughout the book. And it’s not just thrown in there. It’s intentionally weaved into the story. It was beautiful, and I loved it. I also love how there is a specific verse (Psalm 113) is highlighted throughout the story.

The romance was sweet and beautiful. I’m a lover of the best friend-to-lovers trope… and if you throw in the unrequited-love trope, I love that too. But really. I had no idea who Sara was going to end up with. It scared me and excited me all at once. I liked both of the guys so much. This was a love triangle that didn’t annoy me at all. It was very well done. I really liked both of the guys but ultimately, I believe Sara made the right decision.

Sweet, clean, and the perfect summer contemporary. I genuinely enjoyed this. I didn’t put it down until I finished it.

2023 reread-

Never have I ever—or rarely—related to a modern day heroine so much. With a friend group reminiscent of classic twenty-something sitcoms, realistic growing pains and season changes, Ms. Bruce has crafted an impeccable tale. One that is indeed part coming of age, but more than anything—finding out that God's will is the sweetest place to be.
The characters will feel as if they're your friends too—that's how vivid the author wrote them into Sara's story—and oh, the Texas. Much as I hate heat, after reading this story I want to visit there now to see all the spots from The Last Summer.
Ah, the romance. As with the best romances—the heroine and hero(es) will have you tearing out your hair at times. Conflict may flare in your heart as you borderline speed read (I'm guilty) to see who Sara ends up with—and every handsome gentleman in the book is worth rooting for. And this is helped by the unique chemistry Sara has with each of them that the crafty author poured into these guys.
This book reached Favorite status quickly for me because of all this and more. To sum up, Sara Witherspoon reached through the pages to grab my arm, get my attention and say, "Hey, I get it. Watch what God can do in spite of us."
And this, my friends, is a mark of a truly great and timeless story.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well thought out and well developed. The story was very relatable and easy to follow. There were a couple of times it felt a little high schoolish, but for the most part a very mature book.

The story has a Christian "theme" to it, which was enjoyable and refreshing. It was kind of predictable but then again it had me guessing.

Oh my goodness! This is an emotional roller coaster with all of the feels! Highly recommended. Full review coming soon.

Update: Brandy Bruce’s The Last Summer is a must read for all women. It’s a coming of age story about friendships, relationships, and adapting to change no matter how hard it gets. Life can be tough and messy, but when we learn to trust God, we can see that He will get us through it even if it doesn’t look like things will ever get better. The characters and situations speak straight to the heart because they’re all things that we’ve all dealt with at some time or another in our lives. Singleness, break-ups, marriages, and children are all things that are thrown into this creative and sweet novel. Sara, the main character, starts out as the new girl having to learn to make friends with people who have known each other a lifetime. Fortunately, she has an amazing group of people as a welcoming party. Have you ever felt alone and out of place, even when you have people around who care and love you? Sara’s been there.

Her friends become like family. They go on vacations together, attend each other’s weddings, wedding showers, and even go on on coffee dates together. They are the kind of friends who do life together so whenever Sara needs someone in the group, they’re all there for her no matter what. Still, she struggles to feel out of place.

But things take a turn when her best friend Luke starts dating another one of their best friends. Everything starts changing and Sara doesn’t like it one bit. Is it possible to stay close friends with two people who you care about or is it a relationship that she has to let shatter away? Guess you’ll have to read to find out.

This was the perfect read for summer. I know I know. A story of pain, heartache, and tears doesn’t sound like the kind of book for summer reading, but trust me, it is. From the first line to last words in the text, I was captivated. It was impossible to put down. Many readers will be able to identify with at least one character found in the book. For me, it was Sara because I’ve struggled with friendships. Plus, she’s somewhat close in age with me. This is a super light about coming of age. It’s a story about trusting God with all of life’s situations thrown at us and knowing that He will see us through it. That to me, makes the perfect summer read.

Highly recommended!

This book had a realistic depiction of friendship that can be difficult to find in fiction. The friendships in this book are tight knit but not lacking some conflict and angst. I’ve always wished to be part of a group of friends like the one in The Last Summer.

The characters in the story were all well defined…so much so that I could probably guess who was speaking by only reading their dialogue.

I originally thought that this would be a Young Adult book but was pleasantly surprised to find that the characters were in their early 20s. I enjoyed reading about that age group as the characters were looking to find marriage partners and start families. I also could remember the days of being that age with my husband as newlyweds (I was married at 21), and not really fitting into a group at church. Because of this, I had to chuckle when Lily and Sam were reluctant to move from the Singles class to the Young Marrieds class 🙂

This book was a great read, I was biting my nails throughout, wondering how it could end.

The faith content in the book was great. It was so nice to see a young couple staying in separate bedrooms/apartments when staying overnight somewhere. I also loved the references to scripture and how God fixes broken things.

There were a lot of references to the state of Texas, which made the story fun, but the phrase “Texas, Y’all” got a bit monotonous to me.

Overall, I really loved this story. The writing flowed easily and I read the whole book in 1 day. I highly recommend it!

I don’t often read romance—I’m more of a women’s fiction fan—but I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet story. I thought it would be a light summer read, but the author brought tears to my eyes by chapter three. There was a depth of emotion that kept me turning pages. The Texas setting was lovely. The relationships were a tangle, which made for interesting moments and great tension. Brandy Bruce made the reader a part of this group of friends, and I found myself invested in their lives and the unfolding story. The story reflected the occasional messiness of life, and I loved the themes of hope and belief throughout. I certainly recommend this book to readers who are romantics at heart.

If I was moving into a new city and search for a group of new friends, the characters in this book would be it. I felt like part of their circle just from reading the book. They were friendly, looked out for each, funny, and most importantly, Godly. Think a Christian version of Friends. It is a group like this that I am always praying my daughter will have one day. These friends really made the story for me. Just a close knit bunch that put others first and were always around to listen and offer a shoulder.

Aside from that, I felt this book would be perfect for those individuals whom, like Sara, have a close friend that is of the opposite sex, that they have started to develop some feelings for. Sometimes you’re scared to tell that person how you really feel and then it’s too late. What do you do at that point? The author did a great job of showing Sara’s feelings, and her internal struggle with what to do. And I liked how she chose not to have the group of friends take sides. I don’t think I would have liked the book as much had it been written that way.

It was an all around good read – great for summer time! And I cannot forget to mention that this book has not one, but two swoony males in it! I hard a difficult time deciding which was my favorite because they both had great qualities in them. But in the end, I had to go with my heart, just like Sara did. You’ll have to read the book to figure it out! I do hope you enjoy it. 🙂

The Last Summer is a heart-achingly beautiful story of friendship and grace. Through the intertwined connections of a friend-group and a unique 1st person perspective voice, this story follows character Sara Witherspoon through a season of change, challenge, and emotions --- emphasizing the importance of praising God in everything.

This story is wonderfully refreshing and unexpectedly deep. I could never predict what would happen next; certainly not the ending, either, which makes me like the story all the more. The LOVE between this special group of friends is exemplary in how real-life relationships are and how selfless they should be. In all of this, the shortcomings and brokenness of human nature are prominent and never shied away from as a part of life. And, the dreams and longings of the heart are explored through Sara's experiences. Far more than a story of romantic love, The Last Summer is a story of love in all its changing forms -- when it means holding someone tighter or knowing when to let them go with peace.

Thank you to the author for the review copy. This is my honest review.

Oh my heart! I can't even begin to express my feelings about this book! I loved it so much!

I think a big part of why I did, though, was because I related with the main character, Sara (coincidence? I think not!), on such a personal level. At least when it came to her personality. I currently don't have a love interest like she did, but I would have done a lot of the same things she did in her circumstances.

All of the characters were amazing. They felt like one big family and I loved it. They were real, heart felt, and oh-so relatable. I felt everything they did.

I'm also pretty sure I became the world's biggest foodie while reading this because now all I can think about are different places I want to visit just for the food alone! Brandy, you did a wonderful job with this book, and I really hope it's not over because I really want to see what happens with the rest of the gang.

This book is definitely a keeper and I recommend it to everyone.

I had no idea what to expect having never read Brandy Bruce before this novel. I’ll certainly be digging into her other books now though. The book swiftly painted a group of clearly defined characters - not easy when there’s a bit of an ensemble cast of supporting people. I found myself excited to go and “hang out” with them each night. I relived the agony of unrequited love and watching your best friend date the love of your life and was suddenly 17 again. I found the way the main characters lived their faith an inspiration as well. The plot wasn’t shocking, but kept me guessing to the end and the pages turning. Really good read. Thank you!

Well, ya'll... Summer is coming to a close. I know, I know. It's only the second week of August, you say, but this month will fly by before we know it! And next we'll be bustin' out the scarves, pumpkins, leaves, and cider. I have to admit, I am very anxious for fall as it is my favorite season, but I was grateful to get in one last summery read for this current season.

My final summer contemporary was an uplifting and sweet story that followed Sara Witherspoon and her 6 closest friends as they navigate the waters of being twenty-somethings. Life changes are coming and it can be a tricky time, often hard to find peace and know when to wait and when to jump in and go after new opportunities. And I should know- I'm the exact age of the main character- 27!

Review:

1. Characters: Oh gosh. Here we go... Can I just say.. I really want Sara's friends to be my friends. I actually messaged the author (who was kind enough to send me this book to review!) on Instagram halfway through reading and actually said that exact thing. I want these friends. Don't get me wrong, I definitely have friends I can count on. The trouble is, we're kind of spread out at the moment. Being in your 20's means career starts, engagements, baby announcements, moving days... All exciting stuff for sure. But it definitely creates a bit of distance and even sometimes tension between friendships. The group of friends in this book isn't perfect, but they are close and they do their best to help one another cope with the changes life is bringing to each of them. I would actually love a spin-off novel for one or two of the characters, but I won't give away who here. Go read for yourself! :)

2. Story: Like I said, this book is particularly perfect for me as it is the exact stage of life I'm in. The author presents this story in a very real and relatable way, and she sprinkles in words of wisdom and Truth throughout. This story does have Christian tones, and I really appreciated the way the author incorporated that. Not much fiction out there is aimed at twenty-somethings, let alone Christian twenty-something, let alone Christian twenty-somethings living in the south (Arkansas/Oklahoma girl here, hey ya'll), so this book really felt uniquely written just for me; however, I truly feel anyone can enjoy this refreshing story.

3. Author's Writing Style: When asked to review books for some authors in the past, I have delicately mentioned that their writing shows real potential- and that's true! But in this case, I felt that the writing was already flawless. The events of the story flowed seamlessly together, and the characters were developed naturally. Nothing felt forced or unbelievable. I truly felt that the author was able to connect with me- the reader- in a special way through her writing. I will definitely be reading more by her!! You rock, Brandy!

4. Overall Rating: 5 Stars. No complaints here! Except... Can you please write more, Brandy??

The Last Summer by Brandy Bruce – Friendship and Romance Collide on Sandy Beaches

Silence has become normal for Sara Witherspoon. She’s familiar with the dips and change of its non-committal aptitude. Since her return to Texas, Sara’s group of friends (seven, all of whom she met through church) has been Sara’s “safe place.” As they’ve all changed and emerged in their chosen career fields, they’ve remained tightly knit.

Their group begins to come apart at the seams when two of their members begin to date one another. More specifically, life as Sara knows it shifts when it’s Luke, the guy she’s been crushing on for years is the one dating Deborah. As Sara watches the glow of Deborah’s happiness from the sidelines, she gently pulls away just as the possibly of a fresh start – a new love, begins to take shape.

Books with calming summer vibes (and covers!) are exactly the kind of reads I favor over the hazy and hot summer time. Over these past few months, that’s precisely the sort of books I’ve been reading. The Last Summer among them. Though it’s one I had seen around (on blogs or bookstagram prior to having the chance to read it, I didn’t know much beyond the familiarity of its cover. As I began to read the book, it’s this that was an advantage to reading this book.

The concept of this novel is absolutely fabulous. It’s one of the more unique stories I’ve read because of the friendship bonds it tightly knits together. Everyone supports one another in good times and bad. They stand by and up for one another, and it’s a unique group the reader enjoys getting to know as we journey with these seven people. As it’s inclined to do, an entanglement crops up that threatens to tear apart the solid friendships many years together fosters.

A kind of “love triangle” (or maybe a love Quadrilogy? Or quartet?) develops about halfway through the story. It’s an interesting quandary that sets itself apart from the norm because of the unique circumstances. This relationship isn’t only about a boy-meets-girl, this is about friendship; the strengths and weaknesses of its complexities. This is where my endgame opinion veers from the masses.

Anyone wishing for a happy-ever-after, or at the very least happiness, will be pleased with the conclusion of The Last Summer. It has a nice ending that if not completely “whole” (because there is a lot of healing yet to be done) is certainly in a happy place. That said, I will confess I wasn’t rooting overmuch for the ultimate conclusion. Much as I’d like to say more and explain the “why” of this, I cannot because of spoilers. Don’t misunderstand, as I say, it’s not that the ending is bad (on the contrary), it’s just I’d set my heart on another outcome… one that, from this girls viewpoint, seemed to be the healthier or more satisfying conclusion. But again, I realize I’m in the minority, so don’t let any ideas prevent you from picking this story up.

The Last Summer is about growing up, change and coming to terms with a new normal. It's also the perfect summertime read. From the lake house outings to the sizzling Texas heat, The Last Summer is a perfect end-of-summer read for those wanting to cling to a few more days of the hazy summer days. ♥

The Last Summer was a very cute and emotionally charged summer read. I enjoyed reading about this group of seven friends as they traversed through life’s changes especially the relationship ones. I was pretty emotionally wound up in this story, and I must confess that I cheated. I looked at the end. I had to know the outcome. I know that is bad, I very, rarely do that. But as I said, along with Sara (whom we get the story from), I had to know how she fared in the end.

The story begins with Sara new to town and joining a singles group in church. She is immediately drawn in by this special group of people and she becomes the seventh friend. We are then taken a few years ahead and this group is still going strong, still hanging out with each other, and making special trips with one another. Two have married each other, which was no surprise. Sara even dated Jason for a while, but when they broke up they still remained friends and stayed in the group.

Luke is whom Sara really loves. They are now the best of friends and she does not want to ruin that. Then Luke drops a bombshell on her and the group. This is when we get to see just how close this group is connected. I liked that Sara did not have to walk through her heartbreak alone, she had her close friends. I do wish that people would have been more open from the start which could have saved much heartbreak from happening. I liked that this group, for the most part, were mature, and caring, and tried their best to make wise decisions.

This story really was warmly told, and I felt that these were my friends as well. A sweet but heart aching romantic read and I look forward to more from this author.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

I picked up ‘The Last Summer’ with memories of my own early 20’s floating thru my memory. Brandy’s writing is so smooth and seamless that I easily inserted myself right into the circle of friends as if they were my own. By chapter 3 I found my heart clenching in heartache and in chapter 4 my poor battered heart was flattened; I paused there to come up for air (okay, so my lunch break was over and I had to go back to work – isn’t that a cruel joke? Bahaha, as if I could focus well at that point). But don’t despair, dear friend, our heroine, Sara will be just fine.

I took two days to read this fabulous story (because work, family, life) and every time I had to put it down it was like coming out of a deep book fog. You know the one, I’m sure you’ve been there yourself. I was so immersed in the story, It felt like literally climbing out of the pages.

Oh, and don’t even get me started on all the delightful feelings this book evokes, and then there is the handsome pilot, Everett, the old-flame Jason, and we can’t forget the best-friend, Luke. With such handsome, gentleman what’s a girl to do? If you asked Sara, I’d imagine she’d say, “Help my best friend plan a wedding and spend time chatting with the girls.”

I highly recommend this fantastic book. Trust me when I tell you that you won’t be able to put it down. The Last Summer easily earns 5 stars. I couldn’t go to bed without finishing this story, I was in too deep!

This is a book about relationships. Ones that are strengthened through the fire, ones that fall by the wayside, and ones that don’t survive.

A group of friends who have formed a bond stronger than friendship is about to experience a year of change, turmoil, and challenges that cause a shift none of them see coming.

Told through the eyes of Sara, the newest member of the group, readers go along on an emotional rollercoaster ride from the second chapter and on. Sara deals with the death of a dream she’s held for three years (which also becomes the death of a friendship).

I appreciated that Sara had a couple other friends who came alongside to fill the void Luke once filled. And Sara’s parents' story is a beautiful one of forgiveness and grace—shared with Sara right when she’s in the middle of her own valley.

Brandy Bruce delivers a story about relationships in The Last Summer while reminding readers that the one to hold tightest to when life takes unexpected twists, turns, and dips, is the one we have with God.
