Rate this book

I love Patrick Leigh Fermor and wish I could have met him or been one of his friends who spent time with him in his magical home in Greece. This gorgeous little book put me in the house with Paddy and his friends. The descriptions of the house, the dining table, the library, his friends and his life gave me my wish to know Paddy a little better.
This book is an absolute gem and I spend a very happy few hours reading it and imagining myself there.

A very quiet little memoir by Patrick Leigh Fermor's Spanish translator that's charming. There is no dirt here, just love for a writer who traveled and lived well. I never read any of Fermor's books - but I suspect I must. Oh and his drinking habits are excellent

Maravilloso libro.

Little book about Paddy's last couple of years. This is not an intro book about the famous traveller, writer, soldier and gentleman. You can read Artemis Cooper's biography for a start. This book, however, gives you a little glimpse of his life in Kardamyli. The pages are full of pure affection and admiration as expected. I enjoyed reading about little details and daily routines of the house.

Written by the Spanish translator for Patrick Leigh Fermor, a slender volume in tribute to the late author--his exactitude in writing and his freedom in life. I wouldn't make this my first choice in starting to read Fermor's work, nor his correspondence to Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire. Better to start in chronological order and move forward, reading this tribute as the last.

Libro excepcional, sensible, claro, directo y elegante.

Cheers Pandy! 🥂

Σε ταξιδεύει σε έναν μαγικό ελληνικό τόπο περιγραφοντας μια ψυχή μεγάλη, ανοικτοκαρδη και γεμάτη κέφι. Αυτός ο άνθρωπος έζησε ειλικρινά και πολύ. Πόσο επιτυχία για ένα βιβλίο να σε μεταφέρει στον κόσμο του και να νοιωθεις ότι είσαι κι εσύ εκεί;

A small but warm book sharing snapshots of Patrick Leigh Fermor’s life in Greece in his final years. Payas’ account paints the sweet melancholy of a light that once blazed slowly fading.

A translator recounts her encounter with an author.

This reminded me of a time/ type of individual that has seems to have largely disappeared.

I read this to get a flavour of the man. He is so highly rated as a travel writer (my favourite genre) that I feel I have to try his books. I shall start with Mani.

Touching memoir

Nicely written, touching recollection of a colorful literary figure leading a storybook twilight of life supported by loving companions.

Hindered by absence of at least a little backstory on the author, who is revealed as a compassionate part of a powerful story about aging. Also needed at least some detail in the main text on the extraordinary life of Patrick Leigh Fermor himself. A brief bio appended at the back could have been worked in with not too much more work.

A brief read that inspires, nonetheless.

The author of this glimpse into the life of Patrick Leigh Fermor in the last years of his life was one of his translators. She may not have known him very well, there are no deep biographical insights, but she obviously enjoyed every moment spent in his company, and through her book I did too.
