“So help me, Denver, if you walk away now, I’ll...” “What?” Tipping his head, he looked her over. “What would you do?” Lifting her chin, Cherry said, “I’ll spread a rumor that you’re a lousy lay.”-Cherry and Denver

Holding Strong the 2nd book in the Ultimate book was better for me then the first one. This book had a steadier pace and more action in it then the first book. I also liked this couple a whole lot more then the last book. Something I am starting to notice with this series is everyone is so over the top casual with sex both the men and women. They are handing sex out like sodas all up in this bitch. These women are in love with the fighters and are just cool with them sexing everyone and they them self are handing it freely too. I am cool with the whole man-whore plot but at times I feel like I am reading a free love hippy series. Just sayin'. It kinda takes away from the romance of the sex when they are handing it out like Halloween candy. I mean I can understand that Armie is the "Man-Whore" and that is his plot and that is okay, I love Armie, so far he is my favorite, but it's everyone in this series. Although Denver and Cherry are a little less giving then the others.

“Mostly I avoided you because I wanted you too fucking much.”-Denver

“Second, these other guys sniffing around—you refused them?” “After meeting you, why would I want anyone else?” -Denver and Cherry

Normally I like the Heroes more than I do the heroines in books, but not this book. While I liked Denver, I loved Cherry. Denver had his sweet moments. He could be sexy, charming, and protective. But he could also be quick to judge, jealous, and had a temper. Cherry on the other hand was sweet, brave, caring and a fighter. I liked her background story and I could understand where she was coming from. She seemed very realistic in the way she acted and the things she did. It made her relatable. I really did love them both together. I thought they had a lot of chemistry. I connected with Denver and Cherry as a couple and enjoyed their love story.

“It’s a lot to take in, I know, because I’ve been living with it since meeting you.” “Living with...?”Silently, he considered things, almost stewing before flashing his predator’s gaze to her face. “The overwhelming need to fuck you senseless, to make you come again and again until the only man you can see is me.”-Denver and Cherry

“If he pisses on you, don’t be surprised.” “Marking his territory,” Miles agreed. Rissy laughed. “You guys are so gross.”-Brand, Miles, and Rissy

The bad guys in this book were much better and I liked that there was more action in this book. I loved the protectiveness of Denver. I think both Denver and Cherry's backstories were good and gave insight into the reasons they are the way they are. Especially Denver with his Stepmother and Father. I love all the guys from the rec they are all like a big family and it's cute when they are all together. Their playful banter was so funny at times and really added something special to the book. This book gave a peek at the next love story with Stack and Vanity, but I am more looking forward to Armie, and Rissy's story. Armie still is my favorite in the books. Something about him is so charming that I am dying for him to get his HEA. I was glad to see that Cannon woke up and finally could see that his sister and best friend have feelings for each other. I loved the ending and I enjoyed the bonus scene.

“But being independent doesn’t mean you have to do everything on your own. Trust me when I say that I want to be here for you.”-Denver

DNF @ 45%

I will be the minority in this, and that is perfectly fine with me. But for personal reasons this book and I didn't get a long very well. It was my own reaction to the characters that didn't sit well with me, but I kept at it thinking, something will change. I chose to DNF because it couldn't keep my overactive brain to settle and concentrate on the story. Having judged the Denver from the very few pages, it was kind of a losing battle. I know it isn't fair, but the first impression is a lasting one.

Before this book, Cherry and Denver were pretty much inevitable from the beginning, but because of her flirtatious nature, he judged her, got upset and instead of talking to her, pushed her away.

First chapter of the book, leads us to now where all the built up desire, he gives in and decides to stake his claim...and she lets him, although a little skeptical, she welcomes him with open arms and a guarded heart that already belonged to him. She appeared weak to me, so desperate for his love. He means well, but they way they went about it just irked me. I found him to be a hypocrite as well, accusing her of not telling the whole truth or withholding information, but he himself said he has secrets she will never know about.

Oh well, I will take a loss on this and move on. Not even the I trouble that they have coming their way was enough of an incentive to stick it out. I might be missing out on an epic ending but I can't dwell on that. I will say though, this one book doesn't put me off the entire series, it was just this couple. I knew it wasn't for me when I was happier with the secondary characters than the MC.

But please give it a try, these were my own personal issues and I know a few of my friends really enjoyed this one.

This is book two in the "Ultimate" series by Lori Foster. This installment I enjoyed even more than the first. I loved being back in the MMA fighters world, and I especially loved fighter; Denver Lewis! He is one over the top possessive alpha...but not in a jerk kind of way!!! He has an aggressive side yes; but he has a tender side too when it comes to the woman he loves. My only complaint with Denver, is his calling his woman..."Girl".. That drove me bonkers!! For whatever reason, I don't like it when a guy calls his love interest "Girl.." He didn't mean it in a disrespectful way...it just rubbed me the wrong way! Cherry Lewis didn't seem to mind though, and she was a heroine whom had a lot of pride and preferred to stand on her own two feet.

When Denver and Cherry decide to take things to a personal level with each other, there are a few major road blocks in the way. Both of them have some pasts to deal with, and their past come calling so that neither one of them can ignore it. This couple though ends up becoming stronger through all of the adversity, and with Denver's fighter friends standing behind them, they are sure to conquer all.

Once again I loved the friendship dynamics amongst the fighters. They are almost like a brotherhood, and they are loyal and protective of each others women as well. I have always loved that with Lori Foster's series when it comes to either family or team members...They all share such a sacred bond, and very entertaining banter that really could stand alone with its own story. Add romance into the mix, and it makes for an awesome read!!
I am still eager to get to Armie's book..but up next is Stack and Vanity..I can't wait to see what is in store for this couple!!!

Title:Holding Strong
Series:Ultimate #2
Author:Lori Foster
Release date: April 1, 2015
Rating:DNF (unrated)
Cliffhanger:No
HEA:

**Warning: minor rant review ahead.**

When I got approved for Lori Foster's latest book on Netgalley, I couldn't believe my luck. I was extremely excited to start this and see where she takes us in this second book of her new MMA fighter series. After about 5%, I started feeling disquiet growing. By 10%, the eye-rolling begins, and 15%, the WTF-ever stage has set in.

Where do I even begin?

Now some of you might be saying I'm being judgy-judgy by getting this annoyed so early on. I thought it might have just been me too at first. After all, I did just finish two intense and overwhelmingly good books so am I unfairly reacting due to a book hangover? Then I started thinking about the characters, the story (which was so rushed, it's not even funny) and the sex (which by the way, occurs at 15% and was so cliché, I actually started skimming the scene.) Nope. Not me.

The MCs personalities were flat, the story was flat, the excitement was flat.

Tension? Anticipation? Conflict? What's that?

The book starts out with Denver sitting at the bar while lusting after Cherry who is across the room. He's had his eye on her for months but refuses to do anything about it. Why? She's too much of a flirt.

So let me get this straight, you can whore around and bang as many women as you want, (like all the other fighter friends of yours that she is supposedly flirting with) yet she's beneath him and not good enough to have sex with??

He'd avoided her, refused to be drawn in by her tempting smiles, and all in all given her the cold shoulder since determining they wouldn't suit. He had no right to judge her for having fun elsewhere. But knowing and accepting that as true didn't talk him off the ledge.

How in the flipping hell does that make any sense??

By 10% in, she's all over him and given him the green light to take her back to her hotel room and tap that. Damn woman! Show a little self-respect! Throw yourself at his feet in a big red bow, why don't you? So what if he's been cold to you? He's ripped and that's all that matters. He reluctantly lowers himself to take her up on her offer. I need a strong heroine in my books, and my first impression of her didn't do her any favors.

At this point, there's conversations are like, "Totally deep and meaningful. For real."

"I got the feeling you didn't like me."
"I like you."
"We're finally going to have sex?"

"You know you're stacked. There's no way you could not know. But I've known plenty of built women."

Ughhh. The mutual Body Admiration Club was in full effect. Because God help me, she had to go there. Not only is she "stacked" with huge tits and ass, he has a monster dick that she stared at in fear when he whipped it out.

Really? Can't we do a little better than that? Not only does she bring it up during sex, but she brings it up with her friends and then he grills her over what she said.

"What else did you tell her?"
"You want to hear it all?"
"Hell yes." Though God knew there were other far more important things they should be working out while she felt up to it.

Need a little ego boost there, buddy? And also, can you just stop talking please?? Okay, we get it. You're hung, all right? You. Are. So. Very. Impressive.

I'm not finding this topic hot. Who knew I would ever say that?

By 25%, I just decided to call it a day. The characters were too superficial, the progression in their relationship was instantaneous leaving me feeling no emotional ties to their connection, and both of their personalities were grating on my nerves big time. I've read a lot of fantastic Lori Foster books, but sadly, I won't be finishing this one to find out if it improves. It's clearly not working for me.

3 Holding Strong Stars

*ARC provided per publisher via NetGalley*

I am long time Lori Foster Fan! She always writes her alphas big and strong, uber protective, and yet sweet at the same time. Denver Lewis is no different!

Set in the world of MMA fighting, this is the romantic tale of Denver Lewis and his struggle to come to grips with his want and need for a young, vivacious Cherry Peyton. This story has a tight knit group of alpha men, all friends in and out of the ring and the gal pals/love interests also. This book starts fast, primarily in male POV as Denver's broody behavior is due primarily to his wanting yet keeping Cherry at arm's length. Cherry finally has had it and game on as she steps up and challenges him to take her home!

Everyone can see the sparks and one night is all it takes for Denver to realize the wait was possibly worth it! Now getting Cherry on board with this here concept of "your mine" will be a bit taksing right? Well, enter some past trauma and a some danger from her life and BOOM...Cherry has to accept the hand and the heart Denver is offering.

This read was overall good. It was a bit long and tasking, but if you are a fan of big men staking their claim and making women sweat then pick this up! Also, this is a quite of bit of fast lust and even more insta-love. Totally expected with those alpha men right? I did wish Denver would stop referring to Cherry as "girl" as it made her a bit less of what she really was.

For me, i enjoyed the interactions of the whole cast more than the actual Denver-Cherry story. I admit that is was definitely the secondary characters that had me hooked! I cannot wait to read Stack and Vanity's story as it is going to be amazing to see this playboy get rocked! Also, the amazingly sweet and flirty Armie and Merissa's tale is going to be an emotional high! For me, this has set up a good road for future works.

Let me start by saying I've been a HUGE Lori Foster fan for a very long time, I love her books and re-read my favorites frequently, but there is no denying that this new MMA series is not living up to what I’ve come to expect from her. I absolutely loved her SBC Fighter Series , so maybe it’s me comparing the two which admittedly, is unfair, but impossible not to when there are cameos from the main characters from the SBC series.

Denver is a fighter, and Cherry is a teacher's aide and it seems her most dominate character trait is her voluptuous frame and her very large breasts. There is a lot of talk about Cherry's hourglass figure and large breasts, and while Cherry is "stacked", its made abundantly clear that Denver is known for his enormous d*ck, which is discussed several times, including by Cherry with her BFF after she confirms the rumors true. And, naturally the next time her BFF sees Denver, all she can do is stare at his crotch, much to Denver's amusement.

 photo PicsArt_1423079431361_zpszivybz7t.jpg

Unfortunately, from the beginning, this book just didn’t click with me, and it seemed to me that all they had in common was lust for one another. However, eventually their passion did grow into something much more substantial.

Denver has some personal family issues that he had to deal with and Cherry has a heartbreaking past that is catching up to her. Denver is trying to deal with Cherry's past, but first Cherry must learn to trust Denver with her worst nightmare before they could really be happy with each other and find their HEA.

What did keep me interested were the other fighters and their potential story-lines. Can't wait to see what happens with Stack and Vanity, and Armie and Rissy! Stack and Vanity are up next which I’m really looking forward to, admittedly with some trepidation.

Foster has set up some great couples for the next few books. That said, I really enjoyed the set up for the future books for Stack and Armie, so I'm hoping the series comes back to the 4½ -5 star reads that the SBC books were.

3.5 He Sees, He Wants and Luckily She Does Too! Stars * * * 1/2

There are times when certain authors bring a tale to you... It can either work for the reader or not. It will depend on what the reader wants at any given time... and if they are willing to go with the flow. Lori Foster has always worked for me in the past so I was pleased to be able to read this.

Lori Foster creates hunks, all kinds... and in this series, they just happen to be MMA fighters. They are a close knit group and past main characters are woven through this installment with our main ones, Denver and Cherry.

Cherry is crushing on Denver... he wants her but is scared of his feelings for her. He is a focused fighter and has a schedule which has no time for a girlfriend... and Cherry is girlfriend material. He continues to fight his feelings for her until she decides to take matters into her own hands.... and it works out perfectly... then both experience the intensity of their need....

Things escalate from there .... but not in the usual way... The past catches up with Cherry and she doesn't want this new, wonderful group of people involved with her threatening past...Denver has staked his claim and nothing will get to her if he has anything to do with it.

Reading this was like watching an engaging film... there were shades of the TV show, Justified with all of those characters come to life... I pictured Cherry with a touch of Dolly Parton... as her figure was petite but generous in curves... and the attraction between Denver and Cherry was off the charts...Which, come on... It is a Lori Foster book....

This had a strong plot, character development and really keep me entertained throughout. Even though it is part of a series... I was able to dig in and not feel as if I was missing anything. The best is the other fellas in this group all have women they are hooked on and we get to follow their budding relationships in the next books... and let me tell you... they are going to be good.

****Full Review****

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Denver has had his eye on Cherry for awhile but since it seems like Cherry has her eye on everyone he has held himself back. When it becomes clear that they only want each other, it's on. With family drama and trust issues plaguing our couple, they both must fight for what they truly want.

The hot sexy times come up a lot faster in this book but since the previous two books in the series (Hard Knocks and No Limits) featured Denver and Cherry's sexual tension and itch for one another, it didn't necessarily feel rushed. This could definitely be read as a standalone, the beginning might just feel a bit rushed if you have no context for how Denver and Cherry have been dancing around each other. As always, Foster's dialogue, chemistry between leads, writing, and characters make this an entertainingly fun read. The book did seem to run a tad long however, too much repetitiveness with Cherry not wanting Denver to get hurt and claiming it wasn't his problem when dealing with her foster family.

Cherry was a fun character to read, she was open and fun loving while Denver hit all the points of the trifecta hero, protecting, sexy, and strong; I do wish a couple out of the hundred times he used "girl" could have been cut, though. It was a little drawn out how Denver kept himself away from Cherry because of what he deemed her excessive flirting and side eye inducing when it was linked to issues pertaining to his stepmother. Cherry's issues with her foster brothers leaned toward the melodramatic but where would the romance world be without some angst to keep our couples on their toes? Cherry and Denver never quite swim in the deep end of the pool but they work well together and were amusing to read about.

Past and future characters make appearances in this, setting it nicely in the MMA world Foster has created. I know what you all want me to say and yes, Armie makes appearances here, with one particular scene that will have your toes curling in anticipation for what is to come. There is also a bonus chapter from Cannon's pov during his wedding reception that I shamelessly read three times over. All in all, Holding Strong isn't the strongest addition to this series but I still liked it. It's a fun read that could be cut down but has some fabulous scenes involving the MMA men and world Foster has created that we all love to read about. I'll definitely be on the lookout for the next in the series.

We all remember Denver & Cherry from the first books in the series.

Denver is one of the fighters in Cannon Colter's gym in Warfield, Ohio. Denver recently signed with SBC, the big fighting association, but is still living and training in Warfield. Cherry is the roommate of Colton's sister Merissa.

Both Denver & Cherry have been totally attracted to each other ever since they first met....but Denver never tried anything because he thought Cherry was too much of a partygirl and a flirt... she talked and flirted to all the guys at the gym.

But she's not interested in any of the guys - she's totally in love with Denver.

And when they both meet at a bar in a town two hours from home, after one of Armie's fights, they finally both give in to the attraction.

description

They spend an amazing night together....and it could've been an amazing morning too, but two things happen....

First, Cherry must've caught the bug that's been going around lately; fever and all....but Denver, and Armie too, take care of her and bring her medicine etc.

And then there's the problem with her 'Family'. Three dangerous looking guys have been asking about her. But she's scared and doesn't want anything to do with them. But there's still more that she's not telling Denver...

And of course we also hear a lot about Armie and how ex-fighter Havoc tries to get him to sign with the SBC....but for whatever reason, Armie doesn't want to.... plus he's still totally in love with Cannon's sister and then there's the other fighter Stack, who's had a crush on Vanity ever since she came to town - we'll get to hear their story soon!!!!!!

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO DENVER & CHERRY???
WILL THE TWO OF THEM GET THEIR HEA???
WILL THERE BE A CLIFFHANGER??

description

I'm not telling you that of course ☺

SUCH A GREAT BOOK!!!!!

When you've read the prequel to this new series: HARD KNOCKS, and then Cannon's story NO LIMITS, you already know all about the fighters and their possible future girls.

Now we finally get to hear Denver & Cherry's story.

And what a HOT story it was.

Unlike many romance novels this one already starts really sexy.

They meet at the bar and end up in bed...phew!!!!!

And Denver is such a hot guy - and a nice guy - and a smart guy ..... grrrrrr

description

I really loved the story. There was so much sexiness in it and the suspensy parts with those three bad guys and all the funny moments with Armie and the guys. ...

I loved how it wasn't this horribly long story before they finally get together - this is a book where they almost get together in the first chapters....Yeah, there are lots of problems to overcome with both their families, but I really enjoyed reading that all.

Something I especially enjoy about this series...this FIGHTER series...is, that it's not really about the fighting - we barely see any professional fighting or any kind of fights, other than with the bad guys in the suspensy parts of the books ☺ I'm not such a huge fan of the whole MMA or boxing or wrestling thing ☺

PLUS - we get a tiny little Cannon Bonus Scene at the end ☺☺☺

HOLDING STRONG - was an amazingly beautiful & verrrry sexy & suspensy Romance! You'll love it!!!!!

I WOULD SOOO LOVE IT if someone would make a TV-series out of the Ultimate Series - just so we could stare and fangirl at Cannon & Denver & Stack & Armie etc. all day long!!!! Oooh and don't forget Rowdy and his buddies from the previous series and Havoc and colleagues from Lori's older fighter series - they're around in Holding Strong too ☺☺

Now I can't wait for the other books in this series!!!

TOUGH LOVE will be book #3 - coming soon.

STACK & VANITY'S BOOK!!!!! ☺

description

....and after that - whoooooopeeeee: FINALLY ARMIE'S & MERISSA'S BOOK!!!!! ♥

I have never read any book by Lori Foster before so this was a great introduction to her although this was the second book to the series it was a standalone so it wasn't hard for me to understand the plot. Although there were references about previous characters throughout the book, it was mentioned in a way that you would still get a grasp of what happened.

So if you feel that you liked this book but don't one to read the previous one then you wouldn't have a hard time understanding the plot. Although I do advise you to read the previous book first because it would be better.

The story revolves around Denver Lewis an up-and-coming MMA Fighter. He has lusted for Cherry Peyton for so long but due to her flirty nature he feels that she's not someone who wold be able to commit to him.

description

Denver Lewis was an alpha male that was so hot I always anticipated his POV. He was never trying to be deliberately alpha, but when his protective instincts come barging in, he can't help but protect what he feels is his.

description

Which I cannot really help but like because although I feel women should be independent and take hold of her own life, sometimes we just need someone to lean on to when the going gets tough.

description

Cherry Peyton is a sweet woman who has a not-so sweet past that comes back to bite her. She's very independent and that is one of the reason she ends up having an argument with Denver. But I'm not complaining since it mostly ends up with them having hot and passionate make-up sex.

description

One thing that I am not sure if I liked or disliked was the many point of views from side characters in the book. I liked it because I could be able to get a glimpse of the next couples that would be featured on the upcoming books but on the other hand I disliked it because I just want to read more about Cherry and Denver not about the whole gang!

Overall Holding Strong really made me appreciate how Lori Foster writes and I'll be surely reading more books from her.

An uber alpha male, with a tender side, finds the woman of his dream in Holding Strong.

Denver Lewis has been avoiding Cherry Peyton since they met. He sees her as a man eater and he’s a one woman type guy that doesn’t share, when it comes to Cherry.

Cherry Peyton has been pining away for Denver but he always seems to be avoiding her. One night Cherry and Denver give into their broiling chemistry, which brings Denver’s protective instinct front and center. Quickly, trouble comes knocking for Cherry; Denver takes control even if he has to throw Cherry over his shoulder kicking and screaming.

I found Denver and Cherry storyline long winded and drawn out so I had less connection with their characters. Don’t get me wrong, Denver and Cherry have a good story but I actually found myself drawn more to the secondary characters like Armie and Merissa – Stack and Vanity. (Can't wait to see them fall).

Holding Strong and much of Foster writing comes with marvelous claim her, own her, and protect her at all costs men with an inherit tenderness that makes you want to swoon. Even though, I felt there story was a little slow going I still found the character by-play extremely humorous and very entertaining. 3.5 Stars

Lori Foster is one of the first adult romance authors whose writing I fell in love with way back in middle school when I was still having to sneakily check them from the library and read under the covers after my folks had gone to bed. Almost ten years later, I still devour her books every chance I can get. I love that no matter which new series Foster creates, she can still find a new way to introduce old characters. She’s probably the only romance author that I know of that does this so often and I have to say, I love it! The old SBC fighters and their love interests are characters I remember fondly, so it was exciting to learn she incorporated some of her old fighters when I read Holding Strong.

page break1
Denver and Cherry, have managed to steal a piece of my heart along-side of her old characters. It’s gotten to the point where I have started to plot out ways to easily kidnap them all and turn them into a delicious unwilling harem of fiction lovers all for myself. Sorry ladies, but I have decided that I can’t stand to share any of them with you guys any longer. I’ll send you a postcard from my island paradise when I’ve figured out how to transport a dozen or more muscley fighters and their kick-ass SO’s.

Anyway, back to Cherry and Denver. . .

holding strong quote 2
Denver has admire Cherry from afar since the day they set eyes on each other, but her friendly way with the other SBC fighters and his relationship with his cheating stepmom has him less than anxious to begin a romance with a woman that reminds him of her. Thankfully, a long night of ogling the woman dance with other man and her latest attempt to approach him has lowered his defenses and seduced him into thinking perhaps he should get to know her (body) a bit before being so hasty to dismiss her.

The man is slightly sexist, but it’s hard to fault him for it, because he is just so damn adorable in his over-protection of her and he does appreciate an independent and strong woman – he just feels he should treat her like a gentleman, protect her from danger, and care for her when she’s ill. It’s hard to not drug his food, lock him in the trunk of my car, carry him to a deserted island and force him to worship me hate a man for that, doncha think? Even if you’re a gal who likes to call the shots, I think you could still find the hunky man as adorable as I did!

Outwardly, Cherry appears to be “flirt”, but anybody in her friend group not colored by their own lust for her (aka Denver) could see the woman only has eyes for Denver. Sadly, he could never see it, so she makes up for that by pretending she isn’t hurt by his abrasive behavior. I’m not usually a fan of misinterpretation as plot conflict, but thankfully it wasn’t the main conflict and Foster always makes it work.

As the novel progressed both Denver and I start to realize how much torment this woman suffered in her childhood and that Cherry and his stepmom are polar opposites. Personally, I don’t know anybody in real life who has battled such a dysfunctional – and downright brutal – childhood and came out a winner. I only wish Cherry wasn’t fictional so that I could hit her up and ask her how she held it all together and turned out to be so normal!

Holding Strong was another beautiful addition to Lori Foster’s book list, even though the ending was a little more flat than I anticipated. It still rocked and I would still recommend Holding Strong to all fans of contemporary romances and to those who enjoy a happily ever after as much as this romance junkie does.inkslinger

Just when I thought Cannon would be my forever book boyfriend, Lori gives me a sexy as heck intro to Dirty Denver and let me tell you that as sad as it makes me, Cannon is number two in my life now. OMG this book is hot. I couldn't put it down. After reading 300 books since January first of this year, I have finally found "my dude". I welcome other authors to try, but I think it's going to be very very hard to depose Denver from his throne as king of my heart. <3

REVIEW:
I was super excited to continue Lori Fosters Ultimate series, I adored Cannon and Yvette story so I knew Cherry and Denver were going to have big shoes to fill for me. What I love most about this series is how Foster connects her leads, there is tension, suspense smoking hot romance, and two people who are just “real”.

Holding Strong follows Heavyweight MMA fighter Denver Lewis who has had his eye on the sweet and flirty Cherry Peyton for some time. But he has tried to ignore the pull until he can no longer resist, nor can Cherry say no to Denver. But just as both are connecting and feeling the heat, Cherry’s past comes knocking and Denver protective side has to make more of an appearance when Cherry opens up about her life.

Cherry is a sweet and very childlike heroine, I was a little unsure of her at first because I didn’t like how she kept brining up the size of Denver’s “ahem” manliness, like it was the only thing that attracted her to him. I like when a girl connects with more than just lust. But I did like how she had a close bond with her friends and the other fighters. It was like a big family with everyone and Cherry seemed to be the sister of everyone but Denver of course. Her past was such a shock, I felt for her and how her parents were killed and was glad she opened up to Denver. Then there are her foster brothers, who brought out the protective beast of the already beastly Denver. I’m all for alpha males and Cherry is his “girl” so she has to start to learn how to put some trust in the big guy.

Denver is a mans man, a tough as nails fighter who comes off as a broody and serious guy. His POV in the beginning showed his uncertainty about his feelings for Cherry, his alpha side hated her with other men and all he wanted was to claim her. The passion and heat between the two when they both give in to what they have been feeling for a long time, was on fire! I love the spark between the two, Cherry is sweetly innocent and talkative, where Denver is ready to pounce. Its very insta-love but since they have known each other, you can feel they wanted each other...so much!

Overall I enjoyed following the two leads and the fellow fighters and their future love interest. I feel the secondary characters are what keep me hooked, as their personalities were so much more colorful. I did adore Cherry and Denver but the pace of the first book just didn’t flow as well this time around for me. I did however like that this story touched on family issues and both of them needing each other to overcome the problems. I’m so looking forward to Armie and Rissy!! I love these two and they just spoke to me, so I’ll definitely be coming back to this series.

Denver and Cherry have been dancing around each other for the last few months. There was an instant attraction when they met. Cherry has tried to get Denver's attention and since he avoided her she thinks he had no interest in her. But one night they finally gave in to each other. Denver and Cherry have hot times between the sheets while trying to get closer to each other and figure out how to battle issues and people from their passes.

While reading Holding Strong, I cared more about the future couples than the main couple. But it was still an enjoyable read. If you're looking for a hot romance with some suspense and danger added then you should give Lori Foster's Holding Strong a try.

Far and away one of Lori's best!!!

An excerpt from my review to be posted on Talkbookstome blog:

I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book. It was far and away one of her best books in the past several years. The characters practically jumped off the pages and I cannot express how much I loved Denver. He was such a surprise to me, since I had been looking forward to Cannon and Armie for so long, I do believe that I overlooked Denver! Cherry is fun and flirty and she reminded me of well…me when I was young. I loved to dance, Cherry loved to dance. I loved talking to people, Cherry loved to talk with everyone. I loved big muscly men, Cherry loved one particular muscled man…Denver!

What can I say about this one? I loved it a such as th last one in the series. Cherry and Denver were great together. Both had some trouble in their past(her more than him), and Cherry' s trouble was the problem in the book since it came looking for her. Denver was a typical alpha male being all bossy and protective. He did get on my nerves a bit calling Cherry "girl", but the bonus scene from Cannon's point of view made up for it. I love love love the interaction between the guys! I could read a whole book of thAt and just smile like a loon.

On to Vanity and Stacks...

Holding Strong by Lori Foster is a 2015 HQN Publication. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Sports heroes are really hot right now and although I have never actually watched these types of fighting matches, I liked the idea of the MMA as the backdrop instead of the usual baseball or football trope. I've read a introduction novella for this series and was intrigued enough by it to check out one of the full length stories.

Denver and Cherry wanted each other... bad. But, Cherry scares the you know what out of Denver because deep down he knows she is not just a hook up. So, he has kept her arm's length, and although dejected, Cherry has given him his space. But, the tension simmers between them even from afar and Denver finally relents and accepts the inevitable.

I'm one of those romance readers that likes a slow build up in most instances, but in this case releasing the tension early actually worked out for the best. Denver is one hundred percent alpha male and has serious jealousy issues, while Cherry is an outrageous flirt. This causes problems in the relationship of course, but these are the least of the couple's problems as people from Cherry's past come calling and they are obviously dangerous and persistent.

Denver also has a complicated family history that was more than a little out there, but it too must be addressed and Cherry works out great as a mediator.

Denver's character was sometimes offensive when he used terms some of us ladies find offensive and his over the top jealousy bordered on controlling and hadn't Cherry already had enough of that in her life?
The story sputtered and spewed, on one minute, off the next. I could get into a chapter and think the pace was about to pick up only to have it bogged down again either with yet another sex scene, a side story, or one of Denver's jealousy episodes. There were perhaps too many threads going at once, and the story never really came together cohesively.

The suspense level also suffered from too many interruptions, but the baddies did give me the shivers. Denver's family situation was so weird I had a hard time understanding how they were all going to move on as if nothing ever happened. That would be a hard thing to put out of one's mind, but Denver does not blame his dad and I agree that relationship deserves a second chance.

Over all this one didn't work out for me as well as I had hoped it would. It was just OK. 2.5 rounded to 3

I feel like Lori Foster is usually walking this knife's edge of romance novels. Her heroes are very commanding and alpha, and it takes very little for them to tumble over the side into becoming, as the ladies at Smart Bitches have coined it, the Alph-hole. Unfortunately, in this installation, we seem to have an Alph-hole.

This seems like a picky distinction, I know. But believe me when I say that there is a difference. There's a big difference between a man who's take-charge and a man who's controlling. Between being powerful and overpowering. Between wanting a relationship and being a jealous a-hole. And in this book, our hero is on the wrong side of this distinction. He uses his physical power to control the heroine. (In the guise of protecting her from danger, but still.) He's possessive and jealous, and accuses the heroine of being a flirt for having conversations with men. Or just for having her roommate's brother's phone number in case of emergency. He can be dictatorial, making decisions and then doing whatever's necessary to ensure her compliance. And, worst of all for me, his nickname for the heroine is "girl." I can't tell you how much I hate this. It's infantilizing and condescending, and every time I heard it I wanted to smash things into bits.

All of this added up into a lackluster read for me, and I almost want to go down to two stars. But as a longtime Lori Foster fan, I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt. Although if the next book in the Ultimate series isn't better for me, I may move on to greener pastures.

Also, fair warning: the suspense plot in this story involves some description of rather disturbing childhood abuse and rape threat. So if that's a thing that you can't stand...

Holding Strong is a great addition to Foster's Ultimate Series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, I loved the main characters of Denver and Cherry, and it was fun to read about their developing relationship. The returning secondary characters made the book even better! I thought the plot line of Cherry's former foster brothers coming after her was a good one, and I enjoyed the way it all played out. This series has such wonderful characters, and I enjoy seeing the ones who turn up from the other series too. I am very excited to read the next books!

Foster has been one of my favorites for years but I've gotten a bit behind on her books. *flails* But! I'm working on catching up and that included Holding Strong. Totally on my BloggerShame pile. Again, *flails* I had a fab time with it, though.

The Gist: Cherry has been wanting Denver for long as she can remember but the man is damn stubborn and resists all her ample charms. Until she flirts with another man one time too many and... he snaps. And, Cherry gets hers. Mmhm. Seems Denver's wanted her all this time, too, and there's only so much resisting a man can do. Woo! But a bit of drama from her childhood is about to put a damper on all their nekkid frolicking.

There's really nothing to not love about Denver and Cherry. They're a fun couple and individually just nice people. He's all alpha protective with a killer body--I mean, hello! he's an MMA fighter-- and Cherry's just a sweetheart and life of the party. I enjoyed them both.

Their romance was actually really easy even with all their resisting since most of that happened pre-book. So things kick off with a naughty bang and them pretty much jumping in feet first and going at a romance full force. I kind of liked that. They already knew each other so well and it just suited them. It was nice having an easy romance. And gah hotness. Yeah, they were steamy for sure.

There's some danger and turmoil as Cherry's past comes back to give her hell. Kept things on their toes and gave a good reason for them to stick even closer. Woo! The only thing I didn't totally love was some drama from Denver's family. I just didn't think it was handled quite right. But that was a small thing overall.

There's a good bit of humor with the other fighters in his club which I loved. It's a good group and definitely made me want to dive in to the rest of the series. They tease, give each other hell but always have each other's backs.

In the end. Foster's always a good time and just has the yummiest heroes.

Very good book. Cherry is a sweet girl with a difficult past. She makes friends easily, and through her roommate has become a regular at the fights and club that includes Denver. She comes across as a bit of a flirt, thanks to her close friendships with a lot of the fighters. But Denver is the one she is really interested in, and he pretty much ignores her. So she gets a little flirtier with the others in an attempt to convince herself that it doesn't matter.

Denver has definitely noticed Cherry, and is very attracted to her. But her ease with the guys brings back memories of another woman and makes him avoid her. After they've all attended the fight of another member of the club, he finally gives in to the desire. They have a smoking hot night together, but in the morning he discovers she's come down with a bug that's going around. His protectiveness kicks in as he takes care of her, then gets an added boost when he finds out there are three shady characters claiming to be family looking for her.

I liked Denver. He's definitely an alpha guy, protective, strong, and a bit controlling. He's also got a sweet side that shows up in the way he takes care of Cherry while she's sick. He's got a good focus on his growing career as an MMA fighter, as well as his career as an accountant. On the down side, he's definitely a bit of a sexist and some of the things he says can rub the wrong way. He also has a tendency to be jealous and jump to conclusions, at least at the beginning. After that first night together, then the next few days taking care of her, Denver starts to realize that what he's feeling for Cherry is more than just lust and it scares him. He's not so sure he's ready for what that means. He is sure that he isn't going to leave her alone to face whatever it is that's after her.

I liked Cherry a lot. She is a survivor. After the deaths of her drug dealer parents, she ended up in a foster home that was even worse. The three sons of the family were horrible, with the oldest being the worst. The things that he did to torment her, and the things that he attempted, could have left her a mess, but she got away and made a good life for herself. She has been in love with Denver since shortly after she met him, but believing that he didn't like her tried to leave him alone. She was ecstatic when they finally got together, and really bummed when she got sick. Her independence takes a hit when he insists on taking care of her. When she finds out that her "brothers" are looking for her, she is terrified, and not just for herself. She's certain that they will find a way to hurt anyone she cares for and tries to keep Denver from getting involved.

This brings the main conflict between Denver and Cherry to the forefront. Neither of them is good at trusting other people, and opening up to each other is a hard thing to do. Denver continues to insist on Cherry telling him everything, and eventually she does, but she's not happy about it. She's sure that when he knows everything, Denver won't want anything more to do with her. I loved seeing him prove her wrong. He is there to protect her, but he also shows his respect for her by actually listening to what she wants to do about the men after her. Denver has things in his past that he has no intention of telling her, in spite of his insistence on honesty from her. But when a piece of his past shows up, he discovers he's willing to share with her after all. I loved the confrontation at the gym that showed how Cherry had his back and how that changed his feelings. Cherry's love for Denver is strong, but she doesn't know if his care of her is because of his protective nature or if he really does have feelings for her. Until she knows, she's reluctant to speak about her own feelings. When Denver figures his out, he's wary of saying anything until he has a better idea of how she really feels about him. I loved their confessions because of how they came about.

The suspense of the story, with the three guys who were after Cherry was really good. I loved seeing how Denver's support made her stronger and better able to deal with them. The parts that dealt with them showed just how horrible they were and what Cherry was up against. Her reluctance to have anyone else get involved was overcome by Denver's insistence on helping. And because Cherry was considered to be part of the fight "family", the rest of the guys also got involved, including a couple of my favorite cops from the previous series. When the final confrontation came, I loved the way that Cherry stood up to him, giving Denver time to arrive. The takedown was awesome and Denver's actions were totally believable given his feelings for Cherry.

I loved the scene at Cannon's wedding, as each of the fighters and their ladies get some attention. I really enjoyed seeing how Denver is now so confident in Cherry's love that he can handle her dancing with others. I really liked the bit at the end, with Merissa asking Armie to dance. The last chapter of the wedding told from Cannon's point of view, and his realization of their feelings for each other was great. It makes me even more anxious to read their story.

One of my favorite things about this series is the relationships among the various fighters. I love the way they tease each other. They are also always there for each other, whether it's filling in at the gym, moral support at a fight event, or backup when there's trouble. I also like the way these guys give back to the community with programs for kids, teens and adults, and neighborhood patrols to help keep trouble away. It shows what big hearts they have underneath those tough guy exteriors.

I received an advance copy of this novel from NetGalley in exchange for a review.

So, listen. First things first, if you like books about big meaty MMA fighter dudes who are tied to their communities and fiercely guard the people they love-- you want to dig into Lori Foster, specifically the Ultimate Series. Because... that is exactly what you'll get. This is book # 2 in the series featuring long haired, bulky Denver Lewis who has a problem. Well, a couple of problems. Specifically, a girl problem.

A Cherry Payton problem. In that he'd probably do anything for her... okay and TO her but he's been denying himself for awhile. Cherry is, admittedly, a flirt and Denver thinks she's been with every guy in the SBC. The last thing he wants is to give in and get mixed up with her.

Except he's got Cherry all wrong. The sun rises and sets on Denver's eyes and she wants him bad enough to approach him at Rowdy's Bar-- after flirting with every man in the room. This is the night that changes everything for Denver and Cherry-- inky pasts be damned, they WILL be together.

Cherry has a spot of trouble with her former foster brothers; Denver needs to heal his relationship with his father and stepmother and keep moving up in the SBC, not to mention helping Cannon run the neighborhood Rec center. It's important to the children in the neighborhood and keeps the whole gang out of trouble.

Speaking of Cannon (pant, pant) he's still the same strong, determined, 'acts instead of talks' guy I fell in love with from Getting Rowdy, Running the Riske and No Limit. Speaking honestly, though now that he's married to Yvette (not a spoiler, ya'll know that's coming) I'm increasingly intrigued by Armie. Something about him... his humility and the way he goes through women makes me think he's running from something and I desperately need to know his story. Armie and Rissy aren't supposed to date because Cannon won't have it, but... I don't think Big Bro is going to be able to stop this train!

I rated this book 3.5 stars but rounded up to 4. Lori always gives us a compelling, page turning plot and fills it with characters who have a camaraderie I'm so jealous of (I have little bros, not big ones and I'm pretty sure none of my friends would risk their lives for me, but THAT'S OKAY) plus lots of intimacy between her characters. After awhile the sex becomes a LOT to me and I just want to know what else happens in the story. I get it, they're into each other.

There wasn't a whole lot I didn't like about Holding Strong. I'm noticing that Foster writes her men extremely over protective and I guess I'm just getting used to it. Denver didn't bother me as much as Dash did. And I mean Cannon can do no wrong. 'Girl' started to grate on me after awhile and Cherry wasn't my favorite female protagonist. Way too bullheaded and independent. Let the big man take care of things! You expect him to step aside after learning that you're in danger? Pffft.

I've heard that Stack's story is next and I'm really looking forward to getting to know him-- I don't know Stack as well as the other guys. Armie is coming in 2016 and I. AM. READY.

First off, I CANNOT wait for Armie's book. If it turns out he's not into spanking, I'm going to be devastated. I seriously want some sexy, ripped Armie spankings.

Anyhow, I'm a huge Lori Foster fan, so I'm always over-the-moon when Harelquin allows me to get my hands on one of her books early. Thanks for that. It made me doubly happy when Denver and Cherry hit the sheets within the first few pages. I realize some people don't care for that, but I'd read the sexual tension between the two in the last story, and I tend to lean more toward erotica books, so this worked for me. Denver became sort of a jealous ass at this point.

Okay, maybe not that extreme, and I only feel the need to point it out, because some people don't like the ultra-alpha, but I found it sexy. Not to mention, no matter your preference, Denver was the perfect man for Cherry, because she has a crazy, scary stalker bent on having her. Denver's nature made him the exact right choice to deal with the situation. Seriously...you're going to want to throat-punch Carver.

For me, Denver's possessiveness for Cherry had me staying up all night to finish this book in one sitting. Another 5 star read from Lori Foster.
