Violet Hunt tells us an interesting story about Joseph Mardell through this short novella. Joseph Mardell’s second wife finds out that her cook has seen a funeral possession leaving their neighboring building on Christmas day. The building is a nursing home, and an actress waiting for an operation is the only person living there. The striking similarity between the actress in the nursing home and Mardell’s first wife, Julia makes things more complicated
“All artists are nothing but divine children.”

Who is actually the person in the nursing home? Why was there a funeral procession on Christmas day? The author tries to answer these questions through this book.

The story centers on Mrs. Florence Mardell, second wife of the celebrated dwarf comic actor Joseph Mardell. Vance, Florence's cook reports seeing a funeral procession leaving a neighboring house the week before on Christmas Day. Yet Vance's inquiries reveal that no one has died there. Instead, the house is a private nursing home with a single patient, a gravely ill actress who has recently undergone an unsuccessful operation and must face another. As the second Mrs. Mardell learns more, she becomes increasingly disturbed. The mysterious patient resembles Julia, Joseph’s first wife. Julia had divorced him upon his request and later sent Florence a strange, unsettling letter. The uncanny funeral vision begins to look less like a mistake and more like a foreboding premonition of Julia’s death.
