Hester (Hetty) Hale is not like other girls of her age. She’s already fallen in love and has no desire to make the rounds on the marriage mart. The problem is she’s chosen a man of science. One her father would never consider a suitable match. There’s another unsurmountable issue: the man acts as if she’s invisible.
Laurence Fortescue is not all he seems. On the surface, he’s a lecturer at Oxford with a scientific mind. Hetty’s father admires his work and allows Laurence to use his personal laboratory for experiments. Laurence tolerates the girl hanging around but rarely notices her as he’s wrapped up in his tests.
When she’s struck by lightning recreating Ben Franklin’s experiment and a gentleman she hates is allowed to court her, she turns to Laurence for assistance. Assistance he’s willing to give as that gentleman is someone he suspects is a spy. For France.
I'm a sucker for a professor-type, slightly nerdy hero who keeps an awesome right cross tucked away to defend his sweetheart when circumstances warrant. Chantal's Laurence Fortescue is just such a hero, one you could fall in love with and just as adorable as my other all-time favorite nerdy-but skillfully-protective hero, Carter McGuire in Nora Roberts' Vision in White. Chantal delivers the perfect hero and a spitfire heroine who can't stay out of trouble, and when Laurence must frequently come to her rescue, sexual sparks fly, Only adds to the pizzazz of the story. Loved this one for sure.
I found this a good book. Hetty is a strong character. She loves anything scientific and follows her father and Laurence fortescue around the laboratory. She has fallen for Laurence but he seems to not notice her until she gets hits by lightning and strange things happen to her. They are thrown together whilst attempting to rescue her father when some people kidnap him for his latest invention.
Chantal draws inspiration from two sources. First, the scientific experiments involving electricity and magnetism. The second: Marvel's Fantastic Four; specifically: Sue Storm, the Invisible Girl. Seventeen year old Hester(Hetty) Hale wants to be a scientist. Twenty-seven year old Laurence Fortescue is a lecturer at Oxford. The story is more of a spy mystery, than romance.
