I really enjoyed this book. A bit of an improbable plot but I am there for it! I read the first half of the book in one sitting. I enjoyed Jenna's strength and Jacks determination. The chemistry was really good and the characters well written. Ok the reason this is not a 5* is I got lost in the mystery part of the plot at the end (but there is a hea and that is what matters)

I think this is an awesome stand alone HR writer. And I don't know if it is because I read the audiobook version, but this was a very enjoyable read. With an interesting mystery, nice characters, nice plot. Overall quite enjoyable.

What in the dumpster fire was this? 😵‍💫

The mystery in this books starts so tantalizing. The carriage at midnight, the secretive heroine, the hush hush servants, the military butler.

Except the threads become so entangled and the plot so convoluted nothing makes any sense at the end.

Jenna and Jack

This book featured an awesome, convoluted mystery. The villains were dangerous and wicked. I loved the hero and heroine. They were both strong in their protective roles.

The plot was a bit convoluted out of necessity. It kept the reader guessing and coming up with solutions that weren’t quite right. The ultimate resolution was satisfying.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy a bit of danger and mystery in their romance.

"The Devil's Gift" was written by Laura Landon. Jackson Rafferty, second son of the eleventh Earl of Devlin, was never meant to take his brother's place as his father's heir. But before Jack can get his brother to confide in him, he's murdered in cold blood. Jack takes it upon himself to follow the only clue he has in order to try to solve his brother's murder. Miss Jenevieve Kingston spent most of her life betrothed to Sheridan Rafferty, but when she learns that he died, she suddenly finds herself at the mercy of her stepmother's sadistic whims. But she refuses to sit back and be a victim.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this novel. The characters have good chemistry, and the story is entertaining. Even though this is a standalone novel, I really wish Landon could work some cameos from previous novels into the story. Since it is post-Crimeria War, I know that there are a number of couples from other novels that have gotten together or are going to get together. It's not a stretch to have Jack run into characters from "The Most to Lose" for example.

This book grabbed my attention in the beginning, there was intrigue, mystery and romance but the ending was over the top and left me disappointed.
The mystery turned out to be treason, but I didn’t understand how it was solved: how can a ship from India with a secret stop in an African harbour bring papers to London which tell the authorities what the mystery was about?

In the end there were more questions than answers and that ruined the book for me.
The author didn’t explain how or by whom her father’s hiding place was found out. And what about an heir? There should have been someone with a slight interest in the baron. Jenna’s aunt seemed to be quite resolute, why not turn to her for help? How came Jenna to taking in and educating the poor girls from London?

I like some of Laura Landon’s other books quite well, those with a complete background story which logically explains the twists and turns a plot takes.

This book was not my cup of tea.

3,5 stars rounded to 4

My first book by this author and I intend to read more from her. The characters are interesting and there is a good chemistry between the couple.
What made it a little less enjoyable to me was the nefarious plan the couple’s enemy was trying to put into practice. It sounded a bit unattainable, and it took me away from the love story.

This was an unexpected really good read. I liked both the h/h and the side characters as well. I picked this up on a whim via Book Bub last year and thanks to my new years resolution it got read. Now the issue is, I want back list!!

PS Dear New Years Resolution, it is only 1/15 and already I hate you! I have been over the Thriftbook reads and loaded a cart already, but I didn't hit submit. So far my spirit is willing, but my will....oh boy is it weak. Get behind me Devil....(currently in the form of BB). I shall be strong, praise Jesus, for he knows how high my TBR mountain is. ;-)

First, I have to say I love Laura Landon stories! "The Devil's Gift" like all her others is packed full of secrets, mystery, and beautiful romance. And the storyline was so different from any I've read before (another reason this author is an auto buy for me). I loved every minute of Jack and Jenna's story, and don't know if this is a single book, or start of a series, but with the awesome characters she's created, I'd love to see more! Truly amazing read you won't want to miss!

Oh my goodness me

this was one brilliant storyline. Laura Landon hits the jackpot every time. Downside to reading her books is that I can't put them down and so end up reading well passed my bedtime when I have to get up for work the following morning.

Jackson Rafferty has unfortunately become the next Earl of Devlin, his brother has been murdered and his last words were "not to let them get you too"
Having a revealing conversation just before, leave him to believe that his brothers betrothed father somehow is connected to his brothers murder!
And he vows to avenge his brother....if it's the last thing he does!

Miss Jenevieve Kingston has been helping young girls off the street by giving them the opportunity and knowledge for a better life even though it can be detrimental to her, knowing her stepmother and her violence towards her she still persists in making a difference in their lives. When her aunt Chloe sends a man to help -Jenna knows that he could reveal her secret that she's been trying to hide from her stepmother, it could mean life and death.
But Jack Hawkins gaze and voice is warm like honey and has her insides swirling like molten heat. She instinctively feels she should trust him, but who is Jack Hawkins? Not all is what it appears and love has bloomed tentatively in Jenna's heart but can she trust, truly trust? Trust is a gift to cherish....can Jenna bestow the ultimate gift and can Jack convince Jenna he's trustworthy?

A fast paced story full of intrigue and mystery, a well thought out plot that keeps you glued to the pages, you have a couple of villains with murderous intend a hero that will do anything and everything not to lose the woman he loves and a heroine who is willing to sacrifice for love. I loved it and believe me you will love the outcome.
Laura Landon keeps the intrigue and suspense in every page, you will not be disappointed! I received a complimentary copy from the author for my honest unbiased opinion.

Mediocre regency novel (2.5*)

This book is intended for some people but I do not think I am one of them. I love regency historical romances so that is not the issue. The issue is in the worldbuilding and plenty of plot holes and loose ends that just leave me feeling slightly disappointed. If you can look past those issues then there is a good enough story there to at least finish the book.

I am not going to dwell too much upon this book because it didn't make me happy and it didn't make me angry, it was that middle mediocre feeling with which you know you are not going to remember this book for long and you really won't have any feelings about it few days later when it just evaporates from your mind.

The beginning is promising, there is a mystery there with the lady training some street girls to give them a chance at a better life, there is an assassination which then leads to a private investigation by the dead person's brother, there is an intrigue surrounding the household of the main female character and there is definitely enough to build the story upon. Those are all great points but from there onwards it somehow drags in certain places like the main male character's silly training in household chores and then it goes too fast skipping important details that we then just have to imagine have been explained like how her father was discovered because there was never an indication that that might happen, it happened just to propel the plot forwards and not because logic and reason were behind the event.

The writing is capable, the story is at least interesting enough for me to read to the end, the characters are just fine, nothing great but also nothing too bad. Everything feels like that honestly, everything is just fine enough to be read through but nothing stands out to make it memorable or entertaining enough to recommend to someone.

I have many issues with the plot and the missing pieces and the overall conspiracy is just too silly to be believable, also if the main villain was that easily triggered as we see in the end then there is no way he could have masterminded that ridiculous conspiracy. The characters also not fully developed. Main female lead starts off as different than other ladies because she cares about the common folk and helps the girls out but then that just disappears when it served the plot of getting the main male lead into the household in that way. There is no mention of the girls after that, it doesn't serve anything, it doesn't come back later... it's just there to give entrance to the main male lead. Speaking of him, it is also unreasonable that he as the new earl wouldn't have more people to help him with his investigation, that he would have that much time to spend playing house with the lady whilst all of his obligations are on hold and that no other woman would be interested in him and come to play as a misunderstanding or an obstacle at some point. Things seem to happen to serve the plot and are totally forgotten.

All of what I have mentioned just left me feeling meh, like shrugging my shoulders and saying ah, it was okayish enough to not consider it a waste of time. Which is not a compliment but also not the worst thing ever.

If you have the time and you just want to read a simple regency romance story then this can kill some time, but don't think too hard about the plot and the conspiracy and the female lead's father and his circumstances because the story will immediately crumble and you won't be able to immerse yourself into this world anymore.

It's good if you just don't think about it.

Not a clean romance ,but has good story

I gave this book 4 stars for 2 reasons. The story itself was great, but there were 2 major errors that could only have been the author's fault, & the pornography. Thankfully, I was able to gloss over the porn, but it shouldn't even be there. The errors, while not making a big difference in story, & not affecting the outcome, were still very noticeable. Benton told Jack that Jenna's father had been getting weaker, & after a certain something ate food he'd thrown out, it (verb). So Jenna & Benton removed her father from the house. Butwhen Jack informed Jenna what Benton had told him, he said that her father had been given laudenum....no drug had been named before. The 2nd error came after Jenna reported (name) sneaking through the yard & going though a supposedly locked door. When she went downstairs to the room containing that door, (name) went straight to a certain spot & picked up the note. Later on Jenna identified the person who had sneaked in, but she said HE took the notes that (name) had left for him. Getting facts straight should be the editor's AND the author's job. But the intrigue in the story was great..in fact, there's more intrigue than romance, which suited me fine.just enough romance to keep me happy...except for the porn.(sigh!)why this writer thought se had tothrow in pornoragrphy is beyond me. Evidently, she's not a Christian by any means!? Maybe she'll take my advice& write clean books from now on.

Devilishly confusing

I’d have probably given this book another star if there hadn’t have been a series of “what?” moments at various points and at the end. First, the timing is screwed up at various points. Things were either communicated wrongly or I was confused, but neither is good. (Spoiler alert). Jack seems to be consigned to his room before leaving in two days to go back to London but then leaves in one?

Then the betrothal ball is planned for a week from some Wednesday, which conveniently coincides with the arrival of the ship carrying jade, and some kind of papers which will reveal the nefarious criminals. But then wedding is discussed as being 9 days away, which would logically be two days after the ball, but happens the next morning. And what these important papers contain is never really clear.

There are also some other “huh?” moments. Why the Duke of Richmond would be sneaking around delivering messages in the dead of night in the pantry himself, when he could just send someone, or better yet, call on Eleanor for tea?

And I’m still trying to figure out what Fullman had to do with anything since his revenge on (apparently) his sons or his brothers accidental murder wasn’t the reason Jacks brother was murdered.

A good editor might have helped.

When a book grabs your attention in the few few pages, you hope that it will live up to its promise. Devil's Gift is such a book. My attention was captured right from the start; intrigue, mystery and danger kept it throughout the storyline. It had everything I love in a storyline, the attention getters plus a great love story. Jack comes to Kingston Manor under false pretenses, seeking evidence that Baron Kingston was involved in his brother's murder. Instead he finds Jenna, the baron's daughter. The longer he stays the more convinced he is that she is the woman for him, but does that absolve her or her father from his brother's death? The storyline moves fast with various twists and turns that keep the reader guessing until the very end. I have read several of Laura Landon's books and have enjoyed them all. However, this one so far is my favorite. I look forward to catching up on the several I have loaded on my kindle. I received an ARC eBook from the author for an honest review.

Jackson Rafferty becomes the twelfth Earl of Devlin when his brother is murdered. As he dies in Jack’s arms his gives him a cryptic warning that Jack believes implicates Shad’s future father-in-law in his death. Jenevieve Kingston is a caring person who trains indigent girls to help them find employment. She is also a concerned daughter hiding her father to prevent her stepmother from committing him to an asylum. Eleanor, Lady Kingston, gives evil stepmothers a bad name. She is cruel to her servants, abuses her stepdaughter, hates her husband, and comes and goes at odd times. Benton, the butler, and Jenevieve’s maid Maggie do their best to protect her. She and the servants know Eleanor is up to something, but what and why? When Jack arrives at Kingston Manor seeking revenge for his brother’s death, he finds that things are not what they seemed. He is determined to help Jenevieve solve the puzzles surrounding Kingston Manor and her stepmother.

The Devil’s Gift is full of mystery, intrigue, danger, and romance. The engaging plot moves along at a quick pace and has lots of twists, turns, and surprises – right up to the end. It holds your interest from the first page to the last. The characters are complex and well developed. The heroes and villains fit their roles perfectly. As always, Laura Landon has written an excellent story. You don’t want to miss this one.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book.

A Stand Alone that Satisfies!

I enjoy reading, be it a series or a stand alone novel. However, I find a different kind of enjoyment by a well written Author, such as Laura Landon. The Devil's Gift was, all by itself, a wonderful adventure. Ms. Landon has a style of story telling that started and stayed intriguing, emotional, humor that brought aloud laughter from me one moment and in empathetic tears the next. There were a few typos (which, as a retired editor) I find annoying. This story was so satisfying that regardless of a few hiccups it was definitely worth 5 stars.

There is some undefined danger in the life of Sheridan, the 11th Earl of Devlin. But before he can confide in his brother Jackson Rafferty, he is killed. But Rafferty has a plan to get inside Baron Kingston's home and discover the evidence that the Baron killed his brother.
But the Baron is in hiding. What plan does her stepmother Eleanor and Eleanor's brother have for Jenevieve Kingston, and why. Can Jenevieve and Jackson every come to trust each other. Didn't really take to Jenna, her character or her actions. Certainly not enough mystery for me.
Overall an enjoyable Victorian romance mystery

Oh, MY!!!!

This story was a marvelous combination of intrigue, mystery, romance (of course...), and a generous helping of constant surprise!!! I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the story.....luckily we are retired, because when it was heading on 6am, and I was just getting to Part Two, he finally convinced me to sleep a bit, and finish it later. By 9:30 am, I was awake, had breakfast, and say down with a cup of tea, and finished the story!
Great story, with a perfect ending!

She never misses!

I have read book after book, never disappointed with the twists and turns. Ms Landon has quite a talent. I'm glad I have quite a few books to choose from.
I only hope one of her heroines get to the alter without being spoiled. The only thing so important to the ladies of this era. While she does so well in writing books that are clean and enjoyable, she misses this one point.

This is a new author for me, so you never really know what you're going to get. You simply hope for the best. I don't know about her other books, but I really enjoyed this one. Great blend of romance and mystery. I was drawn into the story immediately and couldn't put it down. It's a light, quick read, only took me a few hours, but well worth it. I will definitely read more from this author.

Mystery and romance

The heroine is a wonderful young woman. She gives all to keep her father safe and she helps street orphans to make a better life. The hero is a strong man who loves his brother and when he is murdered he seeks justice for his death. I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. The villains are cruel, the secondary characters so likable and the story is wonderful.

Jack and Jenna

Caught up in a horrible situation, Jenna will do anything to safeguard her father from her stepmother over anything else, including her own safety. While she and her aunt struggle to save girls from the streets, she finds herself with a man who also looks like a ruffian sent to her by her aunt to save. But what will she do with him?!

Nice regency with lots of intrigue. The h is strong but gets a lot of abuse from her step mother and takes it as she needs to protect her father. The H is an upright, exemplary citizen and gentleman who wants to avenge his brother. The villains are involved in nefarious affairs. And of course it ends with a happy ending.
